These include not only possible blood disorders but also diseases of many other organs such as a bacterial infection (which can cause a high granulocyte count) or colon cancer (which can cause anemia). Blood samples for diagnostic tests are collected from a vein in the arm in a procedure known as a venipuncture. A single sample of blood can be used for a large number of tests; the most common of these tests are the blood counts. Routine blood counts are usually performed on an automated machine, and are often called the ABC (automated blood count). The ABC includes a measurement of the red blood cells as either a precise number of red blood cells, as in a red blood count (RBC), or as a "relative" number of red blood cells. The relative number of red blood cells can be determined either as the hematocrit (HCT), the amount of blood cells found in a given volume of blood; or the hemoglobin concentration (HGB), which is the amount of hemoglobin present in a given amount of blood. The RBC, HCT, and HGB all basically look at the same thing: the number of red blood cells present in a given sample of blood. A significant decrease in the RBC, HCT, or the HGB is known as anemia, and can reflect a variety of diseases affecting the entire body, as well as conditions localized in the blood system.

Two lesser known malignant blood diseases are myeloproliferative disorders (too many of certain types of blood cells made in the bone marrow), and myelodysplastic syndromes (the bone marrow doesn't function properly and not enough normal blood cells are made). Other blood disorders include amyloidosis (a protein called amyloid builds up in one or more of the organs), hypereosinophilia (an abnormally high number of eosinophils, a type of white blood cell, in the blood), histiocytosis (abnormal appearance of histiocytes in the tissues), and systemic mastocytosis (an abnormally high number of mast cells, or cells involved in allergic reactions). Among nonmalignant blood diseases there are many types of anemia, including sickle cell anemia and aplastic anemia. Other disorders affect blood clotting, and may lead to bleeding tendencies (like hemophilia), or recurrent blood clots. Many blood disorders are hard to diagnose, but they are sometimes easily treated if diagnosed correctly.
