The word conjures up kaleidoscopic images of medieval pestilence and modern media hype. As a specific disease, however, its meaning is now confined to the infectious, and often fatal, illness caused by the bacterium Pasteurella pestis. Common carriers of true plague are rat and human fleas and the human louse. Louis Pasteur in the 19th century suggested that the cyclical agent of plague, whatever it was, might lie very low until suddenly reactivated by a change in the climate. As early as the 16th century, the poet Thomas Nashe in the midst of a British plague lamented, "From winter, plague and pestilence, good Lord, deliver us!" In fact, it is now recognized that wet, chilly weather stimulates the reproduction of the deadly bacterium that causes bubonic and pneumonic plague. Yet, the origin of the historical cycles of plague has remained obscure. By statistically examining the occurrences of widespread plague that have been recorded throughout Western history, a curious coincidence emerges. A large number of these pandemics occurred shortly after a volcano underwent a huge eruption, according to GISS scientist Richard Stothers.

Extractions: WASHINGTON (Reuters) - About 30 vials that possibly contain samples of the bacteria that causes bubonic plague were reported missing from a lab at Texas Tech University in Lubbock, a law enforcement official said on Wednesday. The official had few details but said the FBI was trying to determine what had happened to the vials at the Texas facility about 330 miles west of Dallas. "Apparently there are about 30 missing," he said. But the official emphasized that the plague believed to be in the vials could not be used as a weapon of mass destruction. The vials could possibly kill one person but not a large group of people, he said. Plague, caused by the bacterium Yersinia pestis, is usually passed to people from rodents via fleas. It caused huge epidemics in the Middle Ages notably the Black Death that wiped out up to a third of the population in Europe. It can take on three forms bubonic plague, which caused the terrifying black swellings or buboes that gave the Black death its name; pneumonic plague, which is far deadlier and caused when the bacteria are inhaled, and septicemic plague, which is a rare blood infection. Plague is considered a likely bioterrorist agent because it is so easy to prepare and use as a weapon and because it frightens people. It is easily treated with antibiotics, but only if it is diagnosed properly.

The man's wife, whose test results were pending, also has been hospitalized. Bioterrorism is not suspected, experts told The New York Times. The couple is believed to have been infected by rodents in Santa Fe. Bubonic plague killed millions of people in Europe during the Middle Ages, who were bitten by fleas from infected rats. But in modern times, antibiotics are effective against the disease, and cases of plague are scattered and few, usually arising in rural areas. In the United States, about 10 to 15 people a year come down with the plague, according to the federal Centers of Disease Control and Prevention. Death can occur if patients are not treated promptly with the appropriate antibiotics.

Now sources confirm for Eyewitness News the presence of the plague in two patients here in New York City. The pair is a married couple from New Mexico who were in the city on vacation. Doctors tell Eyewitness News that a microbiology test confirmed their fears that the couple was indeed suffering from the Bubonic plague. The couple has been isolated to prevent the further spread of the disease. Doctors say while the female patient is out of danger, her husband is in extremely critical condition. They say he was admitted with a fever of 105 degrees. High fever is one of the symptoms of the Bubonic plague. The couple is from a rural area of New Mexico. Just days ago, while visiting New York City, they called a doctor complaining of flu-like symptoms. But even over the phone, the doctor thought it was more than that. Dr. Ronald Primas, Beth Israel Medical Center: "He actually was very sick. He had a fever of 105 degrees. He was just sweating profusely and extremely weak."

We found six of them over the past six months,'' Welsh said from her St. Joseph Hospital bed, where a tube trickled antibiotics into her body to fight the disease. Welsh, 43, who lives just north of Albuquerque, was confirmed late Monday as suffering from the disease - the first human plague case of the year in New Mexico. ``She's in fine condition,'' said Dr. David Keller, chief of the infectious disease epidemiology program at the state Department of Health. Keller said the department is trying to determine how Welsh got the plague, but she has an idea. She found the last wobbly mouse around Christmas.
