In that year, Warren and Marshall reported the presence of these curved bacteria on the surface of gastric antral epithelium in patients with active chronic gastritis. Later, Marshall et al presented evidence that antral mucosa can be present in the duodenum and that these cells can also be infected by C. pylori . They speculated that gastritis predisposes to gastric ulcers because the damaged cells are more susceptible to acid and peptic digestion, and that C. pylori can also cause duodenal ulceration because of infection of antral tissue in the duodenum. En el hombre este microorganismo curvado, en espiral o en "S" ha sido demostrado solo en el estomago donde se sitúa característicamente recubriendo la mucosa o en la superficie luminal de las células del epitelio superficial. Hasta la fecha no han sido descriptos casos en zonas mas profundas. La significación clínica del C.pylori esta principalmente en su omnipresencia en todo el mundo, su prevalencia en el 20 por 100 de la población adulta , una frecuencia que aumenta con la edad, y la estrecha asociación de su presencia en el estomago y sus afecciones diversas ,como gastritis antral (tipo b), enfermedad ulcerosa gástrica o duodenal , cáncer de estomago o dispepsia no ulcerosa.

In this study the incidence of active C.pylori infection in an endoscopy staff was compared with that in general practitioners and normal blood donors. Since endoscopy workers are in close contact with patients, many of whom would be likely to have active C.pylori infection, it was likely that there would be an increased incidence of active C.pylori infection in endoscopists if the organism can spread from person to person. The incidence of active C.pylori infection in the group of gastroenterologists was 52%, compared with 21% in an age-matched group of blood donors. This finding was statistically significant (p is less than 0.01). In comparison, the incidence of active C.pylori infection in the endoscopy nurses and general practitioners was not statistically different from that in the normal population. It is a microaerophilic, and produces urease and other toxins. Infection with Helicobacter pylori is common in patients with peptic ulceration. A short course of standard ulcer treatment usually heals ulceration but about 85% of patients relapse within a year. In patients with duodenal ulcer, eradication of H. pylori causes the relapse rate to fall to - 20%.
