The younger a child is, the harder it is for them to be able to translate their feelings into thoughts and this makes it very difficult to express their feelings into words. In children ages 3 through 5, the most common emotional signs of depression are sadness, a detached or far away look, displays of anger and aggression, a timid or fearful appearance, shyness, a spacey look, moodiness and irritability. Young children who are depressed may have physical symptoms that are unexplainable such as headaches, stomach aches, cramps, nausea, failure to thrive, wetting the bed, asthma, tiredness, difficulties getting to sleep, and nightmares. They may display aggressive behaviors, such as hitting or fighting, or may suddenly start lying or stealing.

According to Ellie Epstein, an employee assistance program counselor with Methodist Hospital in Omaha, Neb., childhood depression is more common than you would think. "There are many things that can contribute to a young child's bout with depression," says Epstein. "A stressful life event is usually found to be the trigger in children ages 6 through 9. On any given day, one in 8 teenagers and one in 33 younger children may experience childhood depression. Mental Health problems do not discriminate. They know no race, creed, age limit or economic status. Unfortunately, depression in young people is often overlooked, although it can lead to social isolation, poor academic performance, strained family relationships, and even suicide. In fact, according to the National Mental Health Association, 13 young people take their own lives every day, Deputy Commissioner Elsie Del Campo said. Early diagnosis and treatment of mental health problems is important to developing a healthy and productive life. The screening centers throughout the City are a resource that can be tapped by New Yorkers throughout the year to provide parents with affordable, professional care for their families.
