The National Alliance for the Mentally Ill NAMI ) is trying to get the word out that these children may be suffering from a serious illness called depression. As many as one in 33 children and one in eight adolescents may suffer from depression, according to statistics released by the U.S. Center for Mental Health Services. Moreover, if left untreated, the results of depression can be fatal, including suicide the leading cause of death among adolescents. NAMI, in conjunction with many leading national mental health and advocacy organizations, seeks to increase public awareness of depression in youth and serve as a call to action to help eradicate this highly treatable illness.

For now I have won, but the outcome was, for a long time, uncertain. I had lived with depression before, when I was only seven, but I did not remember what it was like. So, when I was 12 and started feeling "in a rut" I thought nothing of it. I did not realize that the gradual slide into a nightmare would continue slowly as days passed. It was late October and as the seasons were changing, I began to feel worse and worse. I thought maybe there wasn't enough daylight, or maybe I had a genetic disorder. Whatever the reason, I knew I was slowly losing control of my life. By December, I was withdrawing from my friends, school, even my own family. Over time, a simple bad day turned into a string of unbearable nightmares, an intolerable existence in an empty void. Despite these warning signs, I still took no steps to stop it. I held on to the belief that it was a natural part of growing up, and it would get better if just given time. By March, everyone in my family knew something was wrong with me. We decided I should see a psychiatrist and find out if medication might help. The psychiatrist diagnosed my depression and prescribed an antidepressant to make me feel better. We also made a decision that seemed even more important to me; we got a dog.

According to Clinical Psychiatry News, a study by Dr. Martin Seligman at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, shows that optimism can be taught. Our experience at The New Learning Center has also been that helping children identify "negative self talk" and substitute "positive self talk" can be very powerful. In our social skills groups , we teach children to recognize negative thoughts such as "No one likes me" or "I never do well" and to argue with these thoughts, substituting ideas such as "When I am friendly, people like me" or "When I work at something, I improve my skill". In Dr. Seligman's study, children were taught to argue with negative thoughts as if they were arguing with another person. Children who did not have the training were twice as likely to be depressed in later follow-ups.

Currently, there are no anti-depressant medications approved for use in children and adolescents. Unfortunately, there is very little information available about treatment for depression in children and adolescents, said Dr. Karen Dineen Wagner of the University of Texas Medical Branch. Wagner is a member of a team of researchers who conducted a multi-site clinical trial of the effectiveness of citalopram a popular adult anti-depressant marketed as Celexa by Forest Pharmaceuticals, Inc. with young patients. The results of the study show that citalopram may help to relieve the suffering of youths with depression, Wagner reported on Sunday, Dec. 9, at the annual meeting of the American College of Neuropsychopharmacology held in Waikoloa, Hawaii. Finding effective treatments for this childhood order is particularly critical. Children who suffer from clinical depression lose interest in activities and have low energy, poor concentration and sleeping problems. They may feel so hopeless that they want to kill themselves. Clinical depression can have a devastating impact on childrens school performance, friendships and family relationships. Children who are depressed are likely to experience depression in adulthood. Therefore, treatment of this childhood disorder is critical, Wagner said.

The idea that a child might think of taking his or her own life is horrifying and repugnant. And while we may be able to entertain the idea in theory, in real life when we run across such a child, perhaps in our own family, our denial kicks in.

Dr. Goldstein is a psychologist working in the Neurology, Learning and Behaviour Centre in Salt Lake City, Utah. He holds a number of teaching and clinical posts, as well as being Chairman of the Professional Advisory Board of CHADD. He is the author of several books and guides for parents and teachers on child development, attention problems and brain injury. Depression may affect as many as 10% of all children before the age of 12, but is likely to affect an even higher percentage of children at greater risk, including those with anxiety, attention deficit or conduct disorder, learning difficulties, etc. If their parents are depressed or if they have parents with bi-polar disorder the risk increases. Depression is episodic, and ranges on a continuum from mild to severe. It is a syndrome a cluster of incapacitating symptoms and behaviours affecting the whole body. These symptoms affect both behaviour and emotion. There is a biological difference in each of us, and some of us are more resilliant than others. It is estimated that approximately 20% of ADHD people carry a trait or predisposition for depression. Thus when ADHD is diagnosed, it is important to consider the possibility of co-existing depression.
