Most recently there is some mystery about the introduction of West Nile Virus into New York. Could it have been brought in by a stowaway mosquito? T. H. D. Griffitts, M.D., Director of Malaria Control Studies for the State Board of Health penned an interesting article on the subject that appeared in the February 1933 issue of Florida Health Notes. Some excerpts follow: Owing to the potential danger, at least, of the spread of yellow fever foci of infection in one country to another by means of the rapid transit by aircraft, the United States Public Health Service has carried on some exact experiments to determine how long mosquitoes will remain aboard airplanes. The results of some of these tests have been little short of astonishing.

Extractions: By Kelly Simmons, Managing Editor and Senior Writer The mosquito that is a carrier of the disease dengue fever has been detected in 3 out of 10 homes in selected colonias in the border state of Chihuahua, according to Cesar Ponce, the Chief of Epidemiology and Preventive Medicine with the state Secretary of Health. The insect has been detected in seven colonias in the capital city and twelve in Ciudad Juarez after a thorough search by health officials. It is estimated by the Health Department that 35 percent of the community living in the affected colonias in Cd. Chihuahua could contract the disease, if it were present in the local mosquito population. The increased risk of dengue fever has been blamed on record rains throughout the region over the past two months. The rains have exacerbated conditions under which the virus spreads. At this point, the Health Department has not received any reports of cases of dengue fever, nor have any mosquitos been found who have been infected with the disease, but efforts to eradicate the carrier have begun. The mosquito, Aedes Aegyptes, is a small black and white insect with stripes on its torso and legs. It carries two types of dengue fever: classic dengue and hemorragic dengue. This mosquito, like others, breeds in rain puddles and standing water that collects inside automobile tires, flower pots, and refuse. It rests inside homes, closed buildings, and other dark places such as dairy barns, sinks, tubs, and abandoned structures.

The outbreak is being considered the first endemic transmission on the island in more than 50 years. The Department of Health is concerned with more than a hundred suspected cases of Dengue Fever being reported on Maui, Kaua'i, O'ahu, and the Big Island. Although laboratory test have confirmed only thirty-four cases on Maui and one case on Kauai, the outbreak has health officials worried. The virus is believed to have been introduced to Hawai'i by people vacationing in Samoa and French Polynesia then returning to Hawai'i after being infected. Dengue fever is a virus that is spread by mosquitoes, more specifically the Aedes aegypti, a day-biting insect that prefers humans. The disease cannot be spread by direct human contact, and usually is not fatal. Only about 5% of the cases result in death, and the fatality risks are highest in children and young adults. Symptoms of Dengue include fever, severe headaches, eye pain, chills, body and joint pains, nausea and/or vomiting, transient rashes, and occasionally shock and hemorrhage. Anyone exhibiting these symptoms is urged to see a doctor immediately. The shock and hemorrhage can lead to death. Currently, there is no vaccine available for Dengue fever.

The girl's death earlier this month is the first caused by dengue fever in Texas in several decades. Health officials believe she contracted the viral mosquito-borne illness during a visit to Mexico. TDH officials said the girl died from dengue hemorrhagic fever, a variation of dengue fever marked by internal bleeding. They said medical confidentiality requirements prevented the release of more specific information about the girl. TDH has confirmed 51 cases of dengue fever this year. Health officials have determined that 16 of the cases were contracted in South Texas. The other 35 cases are believed to have been contracted in Mexico or Brazil. The South Texas girl who died is the only confirmed case of hemorrhagic dengue fever in the state this year. The 16 Texas-acquired cases of dengue fever this year were contracted in Cameron, Hidalgo, Starr, Webb and Willacy counties. Dengue fever is prevalent in many South and Central American countries and in Asia. Texas is the only state in the United States that has recorded locally-acquired cases of dengue fever in recent years.
