This was the third psychiatrist I had seen in six months for evaluation, and this one was on the roster of official court ordered psychiatrists for the county. I had gone to him on my own hoping for a different diagnosis, and was sorely disappointed. Images of Sybil, or an out of control alter frothing at the mouth, flashed into my mind. I worried that I would be seen by others in this light. I knew very little about DID at that time, and had no idea how wrong my misconceptions of it were. Dissociative identity disorder (DID, formerly called MPD, or multiple personality disorder) is a psychological response to trauma that is usually severe and occurs early in childhood. For the person with DID, the challenge is learning to cope with daily life, while healing from the traumatic events of childhood. In this article, I will be sharing from my perspective both as a health professional, and a survivor, on how to cope with DID. This is NOT meant to replace therapy with a qualified therapist or psychiatrist, but only meant to be informational based on one persons experiences with DID. bodyOffer(29071) DID has been called a chronic form of post-traumatic disorder. Certainly the symptoms of PTSD are encapsulated in the personality states of the person with DID. Learning what symptoms may occur, and how to deal with them, while maintaining a healthy lifestyle, is the challenge for the person in recovery.

IJT 2,2, http://www.symposion.com/ijt/ijtc0404.htm Abstract This paper focuses on the process of assessing gender issues. Dissociation and Dissociative Identity Disorder are discussed. A case of dissociative identity disorder presenting as gender dysphoria is presented. This individual, who was sexually traumatized as a little girl, had seven surgeries to complete gender reassignment before treating clinicians recognized that there were multiple male and female ego states. Psychological testing and treatment recommendations are suggested so that integration can be achieved or at least consensus of ego states can be reached before GRS surgery is done. Introduction In the field of sexology, histories of sexual abuse are frequent. When the abuse has been severe and at an early age, dissociation may be used as a mechanism of defense to cope with overwhelming and continuous emotional assaults. In some cases this dissociation defense leads to development of separate ego states or alter personality states which are not co-conscious of other ego states. These "alters" may be male or female, of various ages and different perceived appearances. They may be persecutors or protectors of other alters which they do not usually perceive as being part of the same body or person. The research of this phenomenon has led to inclusion of Dissociation and specifically Dissociative Identity Disorder (300.14) in DSM IV.

Extractions: On Serendip Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID), formerly known as Multiple Personality Disorder (MPD) is considered by the American Psychiatric Association to be one of 4 main kinds of dissociative disorders (DSM-IV): "The essential feature of dissociative disorders is a disturbance or alteration in the normally integrative functions of identity, memory, or consciousness" . If identity is the main function affected, the person is said to have DID. Most non-DID people have one identity comprised of many parts that work harmoniously together. They have only one I-function which consists of a conglomeration of thoughts and feelings formed from connections between many different brain areas. People with MPD, however, have a decentralized, internal network of 2 or more I- functions or "alters," each with its own physiology, behavior, and cognitions. Dissociation often enables victims to maintain a relatively healthy level of functioning because traumatic memories are disconnected from other information in their minds. A multiple presents her view of DID: "We do not SUFFER FROM MPD. We SURVIVE because of MPD" . Living with this disorder is often an extremely lonely, confusing experience. Luckily, there has been much success in treating this disorder thanks to the extensive research conducted into DID etiology.

In a community in which everyone seems to know everyone else, and life could not be more Norman Rockwell-esque if it tried, gruesome deaths and possibly even sexual crimes are occurring at an alarming rate.
