Extractions: (Multiple Personality Disorder) A disorder characterized by two or more identities or personalities that alternatively take over the person's behavior. Amnesia involving an inability to recall important personal information relating to some of the identities is present. Amnesia is not uniform in all personalities; what is not known by one personality may be known by another. Some personalities may appear to know and interact with other personalities in an elaborate inner world. For example, some personalities of which personality A is unaware may be aware of personality A and know what it does, as if observing its behavior. Others may be unaware of personality A or may be aware of personality A but lack co-consciousness (the simultaneous awareness of events by more than one personality) with personality A. Approaches vary widely, but generally take an individual modality (as opposed to family, group or couples therapy) and emphasize the integration of the various personality states into one, cohesive whole personality. It should be noted that while it's convenient to talk of people who suffer from this disorder as having "multiple personalities," this is just a theoretical construct. People who suffer from this disorder believe they have multiple personalities which then take on a life of their own within the individual (perhaps reinforced by the belief). The new term for this disorder in the DSM-IV more accurately reflects the problem the individual suffers from dissociative identities. Their personality is the sum of these identities, which have been split off at some point in the past. The split is usually due to some individual or multiple traumatic events. The use of medication, except for the treatment of acute, specific concurrent Axis I disorders, is not recommended. Maintenance and effective use of prescriptions given the multiple personality states is difficult to attain. If medication is prescribed, it should be carefully monitored.

The different personalities are referred to as "alters". Alters may have experienced a distinct personal history, self-image, and identity, including a separate name, as well as age. At least two of these personalities recurrently take control of the person's behavior. Individuals most likely to develop DID share several common factors. They have endured repetitive, and often life-threatening abuse during a developmental stage of childhood. The type of abuse can vary or be a combination of physical, extreme emotional, sexual or Satanic Ritual Abuse. The multiple may have a biological predisposition for auto-hypnotic phenomena, or in plain english, a high level of hypnotizablitiy. Those with DID have a dominant personality that determines the individual's behavior. Each personality has a separate and consistent pattern of perceiving their environment, themselves and others. The internal world of an individual who has DID is structured, although each person's system is as unique as non-multiples are from one another.

Extractions: Carl E. Lockhart was convicted of sexual assault in the first degree, battery, burglary, and assault during the commission of a felony. State v. Lockhart , 208 W.Va. 622 (2000). Lockhart contended that the court committed error by not allowing him to present evidence that he suffered from the Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID) which, he claimed, rendered him insane at the time of the offense. [For a general description of multiple personalities, see Andre Moenssens, et al, SCIENTIFIC EVIDENCE IN CIVIL AND CRIMINAL CASES, 4th ed., Foundation Press, at pp. 1127-1129.] On the subject of relevance, the court noted that evidence is relevant if it helps to make any fact of consequence more probable or less probable. To be found guilty of a crime, one must have the ability to conduct his/her actions in conformance with the requirements of the law and also appreciate the wrongfulness of such actions. If a defendant's state of mind does not fit this definition of sanity, then the defendant must be found not guilty by reason of insanity. A defendant who has been diagnosed with Multiple Personality Disorder (or DID) may not meet the requisite standard for sanity. Since one must be criminally sane to be found guilty of a crime, any evidence shedding light on the defendant's state of mind at the time of the offense is relevant.
