Extractions: Los Angeles County West Vector Control District Western Equine Encephalomyelitis Western equine encephalomyelitis (WEE) is a mosquito-borne zoonotic infection, primarily involving wild birds and Culex tarsalis , that can produce acute central nervous system (CNS) disease in infected horses and humans. WEE is transmitted, primarily by Cx. tarsalis to a variety of avian and mammalian hosts. People and horses are dead-end hosts for the virus, in that the concentration of virus particles circulating in the blood stream of humans and horses is too low to infect a blood feeding mosquito. Symptoms of infection appear 7 to 21 days after a bite from an infected mosquito. The disease is most severe in infants and small children and can result in permanent brain damage or death. Symptoms range from mild to severe and may include only fever and headache to encephalitis with delirium, disorientation or coma. Passerine birds, primarily house sparrows and house finches, are highly preferred hosts of Cx. tarsalis

Extractions: Acute disseminated encephalomyelitis (ADE) is a neurological disorder characterized by inflammation of the brain and spinal cord caused by damage to the myelin sheath. The myelin sheath is the fatty covering, which acts as an insulator, on nerve fibers in the brain. ADE may occur in association with a viral or bacterial infection, as a complication of inoculation or vaccination, or without a preceding cause. Onset of the disorder is sudden. Symptoms, which vary among individuals, may include headache, delirium, lethargy, coma, seizures, stiff neck, fever, ataxia, optic neuritis, transverse myelitis, vomiting, and weight loss. Other symptoms may include monoparesis (paralysis of a single limb) or hemiplegia (paralysis on one side of the body). The disorder occurs in children more often than in adults.

Extractions: Abstract: This thesis describes the development of a novel method to suppress an organ-specific autoimmune disease, experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE), by vaccination with DNA encoding autoantigenic peptides. DNA vaccination can produce long-term immunity and generate antigen-specific CD8+ and CD4+ T cells. EAE is an autoimmune disease of the central nervous system (CNS), and an animal model for multiple sclerosis (MS). We used myelin basic protein (MBP)-EAE, in which Lewis (LEW) rats are immunized with MBP or encephalitogenic MBP-peptides. The disease is considered to be T1-mediated. We vaccinated LEW rats with DNA encoding the irnmunodominant T cell epitope MBP-peptide 68-85 (MBP68-85) targeted to IgG, before challenge with MBP68-85. The clinical and histopathological signs of EAE were reduced in the DNA vaccinated group, compared to controls. We observed a reduced production of IFN-[gamma] in the vaccinated group, compared to controls, but we measured no induction of type 2 immunity.

This experimental central nervous system (CNS) disease can be induced in rats by immunization with components of the CNS myelin sheath. EAE actively induced with myelin-basic-protein (MBP) is characterized by T cell infiltration of the CNS and typically leads to a monophasic disease course in Lewis (LEW) rats. We showed that in LEW rats MBP and MBP peptide immunizations result in preferential recruitment of TCRBV8S2 T cells. This preferential T cell receptor (TCR) recruitment has its source in a multistep molecular mimicry event and is strictly dependent on the MHC and heterologous antigen. Extractions: MYALGIC ENCEPHALOMYELITIS Updated: Tuesday, October 5, 1999 Recent discussions at the Brussels conference and elsewhere have helped to clarify that myalgic encephalomyelitis (M.E.) and CFS are not the same entity. There has been confusion about this, even in Britain where M.E. was first defined and studied under that name. What exactly is M.E.? According to M.E. experts the key difference between M.E. and chronic fatigue syndrome is that M.E. requires the criterion of easy fatiguability following minimal exertion and a delay in recovery of muscle strength. M.E. has been described several times in medical literature. It was first defined in an editorial published in the Lancet in 1956 which discussed several epidemic outbreaks of prior years. This first description was rather loose and was not very specific. In later years Ramsay, EG Dowsett and others refined the definition of M.E. in various published papers. After Ramsay died in 1990, Dowsett et al. wrote the latest version of the M.E. definition now known as the "London criteria". These have been used in recent papers by Costa (Brainstem perfusion is impaired in patients with CFS, QJM 1995; 88:767-773) and Scholey (A comparison of the cognitive deficits seen in M.E. to Alzheimer's Disease, Proceedings of the British Psychological Society, 1999, January, 12).

Myalgic Encephalopathy (My-al-jik En-kefalo-pathy) or Chronic Fatigue Syndrome is an illness characterised by prolonged, debilitating fatigue and multiple symptoms including headaches, recurrent sore throats, muscle and joint pains, stomach pains, loss of appetite, and cognitive complaints such as difficulty in understanding, concentrating and finding thecorrect word when speaking. In very severe cases, the brain symptoms become severe: vertigo is common, swallowing becomes difficult, shaking fits can occur, and contracture of the limbs and tingling, numbness or even paralysis is not unheard of often down one side of the body The profound fatigue which marks the disorder can come on gradually or suddenly, often after a viral illness. Unlike the short-term disability of an acute infection, M.E or CFS symptoms (by definition - Chronic meaning long-term) persists for at least 3 months in children.

The aim of this study was to replicate earlier research by McEvedy and Beard, using a group of people with a clear diagnosis of Myalgic Encephalomyelitis (M.E.). Their scores on the EPI were compared to those recorded by a non-symptomatic control group as well as a group of patients suffering from another chronic illness (M.S. group). The results suggest that the slightly raised Neuroticism scores of people with M.S. do not necessarily indicate a hysterical personality or neuroticism. Both the limitations of the EPI as a measure of Neuroticism and Extraversion in people with physical illnesses and the psycho-social sequelae of conditions such as M.E. may have affected the responses on the inventory. These factors should also be considered when interpreting the data obtained by McEvedy and Beard. Consequently, it was impossible to draw any firm conclusions about the role of personality in the aetiology of M.E. INTRODUCTION

(Myalgic Encephalomyelitis). M.E. is a painful, chronic, debilitating illness that affects many bodily systems. The WWMEA operates in Southwestern Ontario within Wellington County and the Region of Waterloo serving cities such as Cambridge, Guelph, Kitchener and Waterloo (KW). This area is also referred to as the Golden Triangle of Ontario as well as Canada's Technology Triangle. The WWMEA relies on membership fees and donations to cover operating expenses. Charitable Tax Receipts will be issued for donations from within Canada. Funds are also raised through the Zehrs Save-A-Tape Program of Zehrs Supermarkets. M.E. is comprised of numerous symptoms such as impairment in short-term memory, impairment in concentration, sore throat, tender lymph nodes, exhaustion, muscle pain, multijoint pain, headaches (of a new type, pattern, or severity), unrefreshing sleep and post-exertional malaise lasting more than 24 hours.
