We welcome and include ` those whose facial differences are present at birth, or develop as a result of illness or trauma. Networking: AboutFace offers an international network of members for sharing information and emotional support through informal group meetings, telephone contact, or letter writing. Publications: AboutFace publishes an international newsletter which focuses on common experiences and provides current information and resources. We also produce information sheets, pamphlets, booklets and resource guides. School Program: "Unwrapping the Package; Dispelling Myths About Unusual Appearances" is a program designed to increase acceptance and understanding of the student with a facial difference, to promote positive attitudes and to increase awareness in the school community. It is based on the values of curiosity and respect for diversity. A video and workshop have been developed to help trained volunteers take this program into their local schools. Chapter Development: Volunteers establish an AboutFace presence in their area, promote community outreach, build public awareness, and foster relationships with people locally. Extractions: Children and adults with facial differences need our help. Medical problems that produce an alteration in facial appearance dramatically affect their lives. Whether this change is the result of a birth related disorder or an acquired problem such as trauma or facial cancer, patients with these problems need support. Although not life threatening, changes in facial appearance dramatically alter the way society views and interacts with a person. Our facial appearance is the first impression people in our family and local community have of all of us. When this appearance is altered, so is the reaction of others. Therefore, unlike other medical conditions such as heart disease, liver disease, lung disease, etc., facial disorders dramatically impact the way patients interact with society on a daily basis. In our area, one out of every five hundred children born have some sort of facial disfigurement. In addition, one in every thousand adults has some form of facial deformity related to trauma or cancer. Yet in spite of the large number of people affected by these problems, very little is being done to improve their standard of living. There has been no major advancement in the treatment of these problems in over the last decade. In Florida, there is little to no research being conducted to improve the diagnosis, treatment, or prevention of these problems. More importantly, our state is only beginning to help patients and families deal with the fall of these complex problems.

Extractions: National Tuberous Sclerosis Association. Our son has TS. It basically involves tubors, something like tumors. These may stay the same, grow, and could cause problems. Our son has multiple tubors in his brain. His story is quite interesting, so you may want to hear the whole story, but I don't know yet where I will put it. He was born in Korea, and adopted by another family when he was only 3 months old. At 8 months of age he developed infantile spasms, seizures. The family was told he would become profoundly retarded, loose all functioning, and was terminal. Anyway, we have finished the adoption for him, he is now almost 4 years old, and an absolute doll. He is "on target" in all areas. We don't know what the future holds for him, but we love him and will always be there for him.
