Fainting goats are known by a variety of different names, such as, nervous, stiff-legged, wooden-legged, etc. The "Fainter" is a normal goat in every way except that they have a hereditary muscle condition called "myotonia", which is a combination of recessive genes. Myotonia causes their muscles to lock-up or stiffen when startled or excited. They do not actually faint or lose consciousness. They just get stiff, sometimes lose their balance and simply fall over. Their minds are fully alert the entire time they are "down". It has been determined that the animals exhibit no signs of pain or harm of any kind and this condition does not lessen the goats lifespan. Properly taken care of, a fainting goat can live from 12 to 15 years. Fainters come in all shapes, sizes, and colors. They are very gentle, make excellent pets, are wonderful mothers, and easy kidders. Some produce a thick coat of cashmere during the winter months that can be collected and spun. They make lovable pets as well as productive breeding stock. They are extremely hardy and happy. Some individuals are especially friendly to people and literally adopt their masters and shower them with affection.

Extractions: ALERTS The goats of this breed have a host of names: Myotonic, Tennessee Fainting, Tennessee Meat, Texas Wooden Leg, Stiff, Nervous, and Scare goats. The names refer to a breed characteristic known as myotonia congenita, a condition in which the muscle cells experience prolonged contraction when the goat is startled. The transitory stiffness associated with these contractions can cause the goat to fall down. This is not a true faint, but a muscular phenomenon unrelated to the nervous system. The degree of stiffness varies from goat to goat, with some showing a consistently stiff response and others exhibiting stiffness only rarely. The breed's history can be traced back to the 1880s. An itinerant farm laborer named John Tinsley came to central Tennessee, reputedly from Nova Scotia. Tinsley had with him four unusual, stiff goats. Goats of this type gradually became known across the region. They were less apt to climb fences and escape from pastures than other goats, and their muscular conformation and high reproductive rate were also valued. Farmers began to appreciate them, and the numbers of "stiff," "nervous," or "fainting" goats increased. During the 1950s, some Tennessee Fainting goats were taken to the hill country of central Texas. They were further selected for meat qualities, including larger size, and came to be known as "Wooden Leg" goats.

Where did these astounding creatures come from? Do they really faint? These are just a few of the questions we will answer on our page... The origins of the Fainting Goat can best be traced to the hills of Tennessee and the County of Marshall. It was here that a drifter named Tinsley arrived in about the year 1880. We can't really say who Tinsley was, but of course we can speculate! There can be little doubt that the hills of Tennessee were fertile hunting grounds for the infamous Medicine Men of the day. Perhaps Tinsley belonged to this group? Who knows! But imagine his sales pitch: "Look here folks, these here goats got a case of the palsy real bad." Then he might have paraded out one of the fainting goats for the townspeople to see. Naturally they would have been astonished at the stiffness the animal exhibited, but when given his wondrous tonic, the goat seemed to heal right in front of everyone! The townspeople, unaware that the stiffness in these goats last only a few seconds, may have quite naturally believed they had just witnessed a miracle of science! Which of course, they would purchase. Perhaps he was a simple travelling salesman. Yet if he was, what was he selling? He did not sell his goats until he had been in the area of Marshall county for a while. In fact, he married and seemed to have settled down. He took the time to work a farm, but he soon tired of the life of a farmer. So Tinsley sold his goats to a man named Mayberry and left his wife and his farm. However, he did take his "sacred cow" with him. Yes, he also traveled with a cow named Zebu that was considered sacred. We don't know if the cow possessed the ability to faint. We never hear of Tinsley or Zebu again.

I milk my goats and raise most of the kids on CAE preventive. We find the milk to have an excellent flavor. They produce around a quart at each milking. I also enjoy making soap from their milk. I think of this breed as being the perfect small farm breed producing both milk and meat. They are easier to handle than some of the other breeds I have raised.
