Extractions: Last Saturday, three of my best friends sat in my garden, tears streaming down their eyes, begging me for help. There hadn't been a death or even grave news of serious illness. I had simply invited them around for tea in the garden, forgetting that the hay fever season was in full swing again. And how they all suffered. Along with at least 7 million other people in the UK, my friends were struggling to cope with blocked noses, constant tickly sneezing, watery itchy eyes, headaches, disturbed sleep, listlessness and depression - hay fever symptoms which can last for months. Pollen is mostly to blame Hay fever, also known as seasonal allergic rhinitis, is a reaction to pollen and fungal spores. Each person with hay fever will show a slightly different pattern of symptoms, depending on which particular pollen or spores they react to. As different plants come into flower at different times, so the picture of symptoms changes. For example, the season generally begins with the release of pollen by trees. This may start as early as February and continue to late May. Trees such as Birch and Oak are particularly to blame. Hay fever also called seasonal allergic rhinitis is a common health problem, affecting approximately 22 million Americans of all ages. The new data showed that Nasacort AQ, a nasally inhaled corticosteroid, relieves hay fever symptoms caused by an allergy to grass pollen in children ranging from six to eleven years of age. "Since 16 percent of all six to 12-year-olds have hay fever, it is important to develop simple, safe, and effective treatments for this population," said Guy Settipane, M.D., clinical professor of medicine at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island, and one of the trial's lead investigators. "Our findings strongly suggest that Nasacort AQ can help satisfy this objective." The Phase III trial included 223 children ranging from six to 12 years of age who had a history of hay fever induced by an allergy to spring grass and whose symptoms had not been adequately controlled by antihistamines, decongestants, and/or immunotherapy.

"Higher temperatures and climate change is adding to people's woes still further. This really is the first time there has been a medical, or consumer angle, to the climate change story," a spokesman for the Woodland Trust told Reuters on Tuesday. "We've all heard about its impact on species but this is the first time that we will actually see an impact on people as well," he added. The Woodland Trust, Britain's leading woodland conservation charity, sponsors the yearly phenological survey by 18,000 recorders across the country. Volunteers jot down the first signs of spring, such as the flowering of grasses, blooming of flowers and trees and arrival of certain birds and butterflies, which is helping the trust build a database to make predictions about seasonal changes.
