Extractions: Using a human hemangioma explant model, we show that IGF2 promotes sprouting from intact hemangioma tissue. In addition, several angiogenesis-related factors including integrins alpha v beta 3 and alpha 5 beta 1 are present in proliferating hemangiomas. During the involuting phase, an increase in several interferon-induced genes was observed. These studies provide a foundation on which to build further mechanistic investigations into angiogenesis using hemangiomas as a model. We are currently designing and will shortly implement a prospective, random clinical trial to evaluate the usefulness of systemic IGF2 as a prognostic indicator in children with hemangiomas. Extractions: A hemangioma is a type of birthmark. It is the most common benign (non-cancerous) tumor of the skin. Hemangiomas may be present at birth (faint red mark) or may appear in the first months after birth. A hemangioma is also known as a port wine stain, strawberry hemangioma, and salmon patch. What is a vascular malformation? A vascular malformation is another type of birthmark, or congenital (present at birth) growth, made up of arteries, veins, capillaries, or lymphatic vessels. There are several different types of malformations and they are named according to which type of blood vessel is predominantly affected. A vascular malformation is also known as lymphangioma, arteriovenous malformations, and vascular gigantism. What is the difference between a hemangioma and a vascular malformation? Most hemangiomas are not usually present at birth or are very faint red marks. Shortly after birth, however, they grow rapidly - often faster than the child's growth. Over time, they become smaller (involute) and lighter in color. The process of involution may take several years. Vascular malformations are present at birth and enlarge proportionately with the growth of the child. They do not involute spontaneously and may become more apparent as the child grows.

Rapid growth of large hemangiomas may result in compression and distortion of neighboring tissues, causing threatened or actual impairment of organ function which may be life threatening. Two cases of children with large, dynamic hemangiomas are presented. These cases emphasize the need for clinicians to take a more aggressive monitoring and treatment approach to large hemangiomas in children, and to communicate potential dangers to the families. Métodos: Analizamos nueve pacientes con hemangioma circunscrito de coroides, realizando en todos ellos: exploración oftalmológica, AFG, ecografía oftálmica estandarizada y RNM. Se instauró tratamiento en casos sintomáticos o complicados; tratando ocho pacientes con láser Argón verde y uno con braquiterapia con hilos de 192Ir. Resultados: El tamaño medio varió entre 4-8 mm de base y 2,5-6 mm de altura. La localización fue subfoveal en seis pacientes, con invasión macular en dos casos y con afectación del borde temporal del disco óptico en uno. No se apreció mejoría de la A.V. en ningún paciente, pero sí estabilización en tres casos. El diagnóstico se confirmó en el 100% de los casos mediante técnicas de imagen. Conclusiones: La importancia del hemangioma de coroides radica sobre todo en el diagnóstico difierencial con el melanoma, ya que tanto el tratamiento como el pronóstico son radicalmente diferentes. El pronóstico visual a largo plazo va a depender de la localización y de la presentación de complicaciones. El tratamiento de elección en los casos sintomáticos es mediante laserterapia

Extractions: Tumores en los niños: HEMANGIOMAS Los hemangiomas son los tumores benignos más frecuentes de la infancia, con una incidencia entre 10-12% de los menores de un año y de 2,5% en los recién nacidos, siendo más frecuentes en los prematuros. Son más afectadas las niñas, con una proporción que varía entre 6: 1 a 2: 1, con respecto a los niños, excepto en los prematuros en que la proporción es de 1:1. Los hemangiomas son tumores vasculares caracterizadas por un período de crecimiento, seguido por uno de estabilización e inactividad, para finalmente involucionar y desaparecer espontáneamente en la mayoría de los casos. Esta característica los diferencia de las malformaciones vasculares, las cuales representan anomalías de los vasos sanguíneos y linfáticos, presentes desde el nacimiento, y persistentes por toda la vida, y por lo tanto, carentes de la evolución habitual de proliferación - reposo - involución, descrita para los hemangiomas.
