You are adopted into a new home with new housemates at eight weeks of age. Your new parent provides a bowl of dry kibble and a bowl of water. This food will not change for the next three months. Within a week of moving in, you are taken to the doctor's office for a physical exam, and receive three vaccinations (by injection). The doctor recommended eating pesticide tablets to stop flea development all summer. Three days after that office visit you felt feverish and experienced aches, pain and intestinal spasm. It felt better to skip a meal rather than fuel the illness. The bowl of dry food sat a little longer than usual. Even the water turned your stomach. At the site of one of the injections there is a lump, sore and tender. No one seems to understand how you feel. Months later, those kitten crunchies are now the big adult kind. The balls feel greasy in your mouth, but they are the only food available. You've been living indoors for months. You chewed on the green house plants but they made you violently ill; the vomiting lasted all night. Oh yes, there were more trips to the doctor's office, for more shots. Lately you've had a series of colds, and feel tired all day. Worse, you're gaining weight. You skip past the mirror to avoid seeing the big fat pad under your waist.

Extractions: Corticosteroids are commonly used to treat cats with IBD. These drugs have potent anti-inflammatory and immunosuppressive properties with relatively few side effects in cats. Additionally, corticosteroids may stimulate the appetite and enhance intestinal sodium and water absorption. Oral prednisone is the corticosteroid used most frequently because of its short duration of action and availability in appropriate tablet sizes. If necessary, injectable corticosteroid therapy can be used in cats that are too difficult to medicate orally or if vomiting and malabsorption is severe. If none of these medications successfully control the signs, more potent immunosuppressive drugs may be necessary, but they necessitate closer monitoring by your veterinarian.

Inflammatory bowel disease refers to the condition that results when cells involved in inflammation and immune response are called into the lining of the GI tract. This infiltration thickens the bowel lining and interferes with absorption and motility (the ability of the bowel to contract and move food). With abnormal ability to contract and abnormal ability to absorb, the bowels function is disrupted. Chronic vomiting results if the infiltration is in the stomach or higher areas of the small intestine. A watery diarrhea with weight loss results if the infiltration is in the lower small intestine. A mucous diarrhea with fresh blood ( colitis ) results if the infiltration occurs in the large intestine. Of course, the entire tract from top to bottom may be involved. Many people confuse Inflammatory Bowel Disease with Irritable Bowel Syndrome, a stress-related diarrhea problem. Treatment for IBS is aimed at stress; it is a completely different condition from IBD.

I nflammatory bowel disease encompasses a number of chronic, relapsing inflammatory disorders involving the gastrointestinal tract. The prevalence of these disorders ranges from 20 to 200 per 100,000 U.S. population. It is estimated that more than 600,000 people in the United States have some form of inflammatory bowel disease. Classically, inflammatory bowel disease includes ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease. Ulcerative colitis typically presents with shallow, continuous inflammation extending from the rectum proximally to include, in many patients, the entire colon. Fistulas, fissures, abscesses and small-bowel involvement are absent. Patients with limited disease (e.g., proctitis) typically have mild but frequently recurrent symptoms, while patients with pancolitis more commonly have severe symptoms, often requiring hospitalization. Unlike ulcerative colitis, Crohn's disease can involve the entire intestinal tract, from the mouth to the anus, with discontinuous focal ulceration, fistula formation and perianal involvement. The terminal ileum is most commonly affected, usually with variable degrees of colonic involvement. Subsets of patients have perianal disease with fissures and fistula formation. Only 2 to 3 percent of patients with Crohn's disease have clinically significant involvement of the upper gastrointestinal tract.
