Does XXY affect children? What is 47XXY (Klinefelter Syndrome)? 47/XXY is estimated to occur in one out of 500 males, making it the most common chromosomal disorder. Rather than the normal male chromosome pattern, 46XY, there is an extra X chromosome. The result is the 47/XXY arrangement. This variation happens when paired chromosomes fail to separate in the first or second stage of meiosis. For many years, this condition has been called Klinefelter Syndrome, named for Dr. Harry Klinefelter, who published a report about nine men with enlarged breasts, sparse facial and body hair, small testes, and an inability to produce sperm. However, because the manifestation of 47XXY varies from person to person, this complete syndrome is not found in the majority of XXY's. Some men may have only a few of the characteristics described in that report. Thus, medical researchers prefer the term XXY when describing this condition. Some variations include 46XY/47XXY mosaicism; 48XXXY 48XXYY; and 46XX males, which is termed sex-reversal syndrome

The authors have selected ten patients of the sexological consulting room, with Klinefelter syndrome. Three of them were with abnormal libido sexualis - with homosexual drive, while seven were with normal heterosexual libido sexualis, but with lessening of sexual drive or other sexual disturbances. The patients were diagnosed after complex examinations - serologic, psychiatric and somatic. They passed also routine paraclinic examinations, hormonal and spermogram examinations and psychologic testing. The hereditory characteristics were accounted as well. The terapeutic and psychoterapeutic behavior was determined by the individual problems of every one of the examined. The basic medicamental treatment consisted of tranquilizers, antidepressants, substitution andro-hormonal therapy, vitamines. The method of rational psychotherapy was used as well. The aim of the authors was to achieve psychosexual and psychosocial readaptation.

Extractions: Besides breast enlargement , lack of facial and body hair and rounded body , XXY males are more likely to be overweight and tend to be taller than fathers and brothers. Some XXY males have a slight language impairment. Studies show that , although they will eventually speak , the majority end up having a difficulty with language throughout their lives. Parents who have to deal with an XXY boy, have to make many choices. They have to decide on whether to tell anyone, and how to tell their son. Some experts recommend telling the child early. By the time he is ten or eleven years old , the child can be told that his cells differ slightly from those of other people. Later, the child can be told the specifics of his differences , and what he exactly has. When telling your child this information you must make sure that he understands what he has and let him know that he does not have a disease. He should also know that some people may not understand and he should be discrete about telling others. Dr. Robinson , the director of the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD), believes XXY babies differ from other little children their age. They may start walking or talking at a later time than other children. They are shy and quiet . Some of these children may not fully talk until they are about five years old. Others may speak at a normal rate, and don't encounter any problems until they are in school.
