Approximately two thirds of the world's population is infected with H. pylori. In the United States, H. pylori is more prevalent among older adults, African Americans, Hispanics and people of lower socioeconomic status, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). In the study researchers checked for H. pylori infection in 26 patients diagnosed with larynx cancer and 32 cancer-free patients. About 73% of patients with larynx cancer had H. pylori infection, the investigators found, while 41% of those without cancer were infected with the bacterium. This study suggests that H. pylori may be an initiator or promoter organism of larynx cancer. H. pylori could make the cells lining the larynx more susceptible to cancerous changes when they are exposed to substances known to promote cancer, such as tobacco and alcohol. According to the CDC, recent studies have shown an association between long-term H. pylori infection and the development of gastric, or stomach, cancer.

Tim Heidler received the laryngeal graft in 1998. Surgeons at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation used a mosaic of the larynx, pharynx and trachea from a man who had died of a ruptured blood vessel in his brain. Heidler's voice box and pharynx were crushed in a motorcycle accident in the late 1970s, leaving him unable to speak. He was 40 at the time of the transplant. Three days after the operation, Heidler uttered his first word, "Hello," followed a short time later with a "Hi, Mom." Three years after the operation his voice has a nearly normal quality, allowing him to go back to work as a motivational speaker. The use of alcohol and smoking further increases the risk of cancer of the larynx, oral cavity, and esophagus. Since my practice started in Somerset, I have evaluated 61 patients with invasive cancer (squamous cell carcinoma) of the voice box (larynx). 59 patients smoked. 58 patients had over a 20 pack year history of smoking (smoking 1/2 pack per day for 40 years). Two patients had severe GE Reflux and in one patient the cause of the cancer was unknown. The average age was 64 years. The average length of smoking was 58 pack years. (A pack year is one pack per day smoked in one year, or one-half pack per day smoked over two years.) 14 patients had quit smoking. Four patients had quit more than 25 years prior to developing the cancer. Exposure to the carcinogens in tobacco can cause permanent genetic damage in the cells and tumors can develop years later. Fifteen of these patients were treated with a total laryngectomy, or had to have their voice box removed.
