Extractions: Dear Good friend, Leukemia is a general term for several types of cancers which are represented by a proliferation of disorganized white blood cells in the bone marrow. They are called leukemic cells, and impair the production of red blood cells, platelets, and normal white blood cells. Leukemic cells circulate throughout the blood, impairing the function of organs such as the liver, spleen, lymph nodes or brain. Leukemias are either acute or chronic, and are classified by the type of abnormal white blood cell present. Acute cases generally develop more rapidly than chronic cases. If acute leukemia goes untreated it can be fatal within a few weeks or months. However with treatment, life can be prolonged and in some instances a complete cure may be provided. Approximately 6-7 new cases of acute leukemia are diagnosed per 100,000 people per year. Chronic cases include lymphocytic leukemia (excess mature looking lymphocytes), and myeloid leukemia (excess white blood cells called granulocytes). There are approximately 4 new cases of chronic lymphocytic leukemia per 100,000 people each year. It usually occurs in people over 50, and is incurable but is not always fatal. Treatment includes transfusions, antibiotics, and in severe cases, use of anticancer drugs, or radiation therapy. The disease progresses slowly, and more than half of those diagnosed with chronic lymphocytic leukemia survive at least five years from time of diagnosis.
