Extractions: Head Lice Head lice infection, also known as pediculosis, is very common and can occur at any age, to either sex and is not limited to the poor or certain racial or ethnic groups. Learn how to recognize head lice infestation, how to treat it, and how to prevent it from coming back. WHAT ARE HEAD LICE? These tiny parasitic insects (Pediculosis capitis) live in human hair (not on pets) and require human blood for survival. They hatch from small eggs called nits, which are attached to the base of individual hairs. The nits hatch into nymphs in about 7-10 days. Nymphs reach maturity in another 7-10 days. The adult louse is about the size of a sesame seed with six legs and a color range from off-white to reddish-tan. The female louse can live up to 30 days, laying as many as six eggs a day. Lice can only crawl, they cannot jump or fly. HOW DOES SOMEONE GET HEAD LICE? The most common form of transmission is direct contact with someone infested with head lice. Transmission may also occur by borrowing and using an infected person's a comb or brush, hats, ribbons, scarves or other head coverings. You can also get head lice by sharing towels or pillowcases, or lying on a bed, couch or carpet that has recently been in contact with a person's head infested with lice. They feed on dead skin and fragments of hair or feathers. They are found on mammals and birds although the majority are found on birds. Eyes in Mallophaga are either absent or very reduced and the mandibles are developed for chewing. The order is divided into the suborders Amblycera and Ischnocera. The Amblycera are generally considered to be more primitive with hosts including birds, marsupials and mammals. Bird lice are characterized by having two tarsal claws on each leg whilst only one tarsal claw is present on lice of mammals. Amblycera feed on skin debris primarily although blood feeding may occur due to the rasping action of the mandibles. Ischnocera are usually referred to as feather or hair lice as they are adapted to cling onto these structures rather than the skin. Their diet consists of mostly keratin and in order for digestion to occur gut symbionts or specific enzymes are present. Eggs of both suborders are laid singularly and glued to the hosts hair or feathers. They are laid close to the skin as a higher temperature is maintained here. Eggs usually develop in approximately one to two weeks. Total development time from egg to adult therefore takes from three to five weeks. Adult lifespan has been reported to vary from one month to several months.

Extractions: BOSTON, April 10, 1996 The National Pediculosis Association (NPA) today applauded the FDA's new recommended labeling changes for childhood lice treatments containing the pesticide lindane, a chemical identified as a hazardous substance by the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry of the U.S. Department of Health and Health and Human Services. At the same time, the NPA continues to warn parents and pediatricians of the "grave" implications of using any lindane-based products citing a growing body of evidence that the product can cause serious and sometimes fatal conditions. "In its statement, the FDA advised that lindane be a treatment of last resort its own acknowledgment that this pesticide can carry serious risks," said NPA President Deborah Altschuler. "The reports we have been receiving indicate that these risks are more widespread than previously acknowledged, and that in certain cases, the adverse effects in lindane outweigh the risks of having lice. In particular, pregnant or nursing women should never be exposed to any of the lice pesticides, even as a last resort." The FDA has recommended labeling changes that encourage lindane's use only for patients who have either failed to respond to adequate doses, or are intolerant of, other approved therapies."Altschuler noted two of the problems that remain despite this recommendation:
