It is already the most common cancer for women 25 to 29 and the second most common cancer for women 30 to 34 and melanoma is increasing faster than any other cancer. An American's lifetime risk of developing melanoma is about one in 75. The Melanoma Research Foundation was founded by melanoma patients and survivors to fund melanoma research because there is no cure for melanoma. We are dedicated to finding a cure . The MRF seeks donations and other sources of contributions to in turn fund research grants to the top melanoma researchers. We are striving to ensure that a cure for melanoma will be found at the earliest possible moment. Introduction Melanoma is a type of cancer, originating in the melanocytes, the cells containing color. Approximately 32,000 cases per year are currently diagnosed in the United States alone, and the incidence is increasing at the rate of 4.3% per year, one of the fastest increases in occurence rates of all cancers. In about 2% of occurences, the disease is present even though no skin discoloration occurs. This is called amelanotic melanoma. "According to the American Academy of Dermatology, one person dies from malignant melanoma every hour. The overall incidence rate for the disease is increasing faster than that of any other cancer and by the year 2000, an American's lifetime risk of developing melanoma will be one in 75. The disease is now the most commonly occurring cancer in women between the ages of 25 and 29 and is second only to breast cancer in women ages 30 to 34. Dr. Fuhlbrigge's project will examine factors that influence whether a particular type of immune system cell, the T-cell, infiltrates melanoma tumors. Movement of T-cells into tumors permits them to kill the tumors, and Dr. Fuhlbrigge's project may lead to new ways to stimulate natural immune system attacks against melanoma. The 2002-2004 recipient of the Don Aronow Memorial Research Award is Dr. Jeffrey Gershenwald , at M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, whose project is entitled, Role of Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor-D (VEGF-D) in the Biology of Melanoma Lymphatic Metastasis. Dr. Gershenwald will focus on the role of a specific vascular endothelial growth factor in melanoma metastasis via the lymph system, which is the most common route for the spread of melanoma. Dr. Gershenwald will determine whether this particular factor causes melanoma metastasis in mice, and also study the frequency of occurrence of this factor in human melanoma tissues.
