You are invited to join us to a space where everyone can contribute, where everyone together can build a clearinghouse for educational information and research activity concerning melanoma in Greece. The primary purpose of the HMS is to provide knowledge about the diagnosis, prevention and treatment of melanoma. The final goal is to explore the profile of melanoma in Greece in comparison with melanoma worldwide. Since 1986, the Department of Plastic Surgery and Microsurgery and the Department of Pathology in the General Hospital of Athens "G. Gennimatas", have founded a collaborating group for the prevention, early diagnosis and surgical treatment of melanoma.

The patients had advanced cancer. While tumors shrank in some of them after treatment, it's too early to know whether the therapy known as immunotherapy will help patients live longer. Generally, there are three methods of treatment for cancer surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy. Now researchers are hopeful immunotherapy can be a viable fourth option. "In immunotherapy, you alter the body so that the body itself can recognize the cancer as foreign and attempt to reject it," said Dr. Steven Rosenberg of the National Cancer Institute. Melanoma vaccines to treat the disease rather than prevent it have long been tried in patients, and some past studies have reported they prolong life. The new work is reported in the March issue of the journal Nature Medicine. One study was done by Rosenberg and colleagues at the National Cancer Institute. Their vaccine used a modified bit of protein the immune system can recognize on cancer cells.
