Usually the patient's spouse or other family members also participate in these meetings. I meet with patients in the course of their initial visit to the UCSF Melanoma Center. Although the overall 5-year survival rate is over 85%, it is only 40% in patients with node-positive disease. Once metastatic, the median survival is about 9 months with less than 15% of patients alive at 5 years. Better treatments are urgently needed. The Melanoma Study Group (MSG) is an interdisciplinary group of clinicians and scientists at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN; Jacksonville, FL and Scottsdale, AZ working together with the goal of developing new and more effective therapies for malignant melanoma. Utilizing modern day scientific and technological advances, the Group integrates the efforts of members from multiple clinical and basic science disciplines focused on improving the care of patients with malignant melanoma. The Clinical Trials component of the MSG activities represents a coordinated effort of a large number of individuals concentrated on the study of novel therapies for patients with malignant melanoma. The trials are designed in such a fashion to ensure patient safety and to allow appropriate evaluation of the new treatments.
