    Extractions:  Myelodysplastic Syndromes (MDS) Myelodysplastic syndromes are diseases that effect normal blood cell production and behavior. Blood carries oxygen, chemicals and hormones to the cells in the body and helps remove toxins and waste. Bone marrow (the spongy middle part of the large bones) produces the three main categories of blood cells: Red blood cells carry oxygen to the tissues (muscles, bones, nerves and organs). Low or malfunctioning red blood cell production may cause anemia. Symptoms are paleness, tiredness, fast beating or pounding heart, dizziness, shortness of breath or headaches. White blood cells fight infection. Symptoms of infection caused by low white blood counts may include temperature rising to 38.0º C or 100.4º F, coughing, stiff neck, pain or burning with urination, sore throat, mouth or lip sores and sores that do not heal. Platelets help to prevent bleeding. Signs of inadequate platelets include bleeding or bruising too easily. Patients may experience bleeding of the gums when brushing their teeth, blood in the urine or stool, severe headache or visual changes or a stiff neck. MDS may remain stable for several years, or it may get worse quickly and progress to acute myeloid leukemia. The five categories of MDS are:

Definition of Myelodysplastic Syndromes: Classification of MDS: According to the French-American-British group (FAB), MDS consists of five clinical syndromes (3) .  The classification is based upon blood and bone marrow morphology.  The morphological criteria of subdividing MDS into the five syndromes are 1) the number of myelocytes and ringed sideroblasts in the bone marrow, 2) the number of blasts and monocytes in the peripheral blood, and 3) the presence of Auer rods (4) .  The five subtypes of MDS according to FAB are: 1) Refractory Anaemia (RA) with bone marrow myeloblasts less than 5% of the hematopoietic cells, and peripheral blood blasts less than 1%.  Ringed sideroblasts may or may not be present in the bone marrow (5) . 2) Refractory Anaemia with ringed sideroblasts (RARS) with RA presenting with ringed sideroblasts making up 15% or more of the erythroid precursors (5) . 3) Refractory Anaemia with excess blasts (RAEB) with 5 – 20 % of the bone marrow cells is made up of myeloblasts.  Peripheral blood blasts are less than 5%. (3)   Here, the number of ringed sideroblasts doesn’ t makes a difference.  Moreover, there is a risk of transformation into leukemia (5) .

How to use PDQ Myelodysplastic syndromes, also called pre-leukemia or "smoldering" leukemia, are diseases in which the bone marrow does not function normally and not enough normal blood cells are made. The bone marrow is the spongy tissue inside the large bones in the body. The bone marrow makes red blood cells (which carry oxygen and other materials to all tissues of the body), white blood cells (which fight infection), and platelets (which make the blood clot). Normally, bone marrow cells called blasts develop (mature) into several different types of blood cells that have specific jobs in the body. Myelodysplastic syndromes occur most often in older people, but they can occur in younger people. The most common sign is anemia, which means there are too few mature red blood cells to carry oxygen. There may also be too few white blood cells in the blood to fight infections. If the number of platelets in the blood is lower than normal, this may cause people to bleed or bruise more easily. A doctor should be seen if a person bleeds without any reason, bruises more easily than normal, has an infection that won't go away, or feels tired all the time. If there are symptoms, a doctor may order blood tests to count the number of each kind of blood cell. If the results of the blood test are not normal, the doctor may do a bone marrow biopsy. During this test, a needle is inserted into a bone and a small amount of bone marrow is taken out and looked at under the microscope. The doctor can then determine the kind of disease and plan the best treatment.
