Fat dogs are more at risk in surgery, more prone to injury, and have more stress on their heart, lungs, liver, kidneys, and joints. Overweight dogs have increasing amounts of fat over the ribs and minimal or absent waist and tuck-up. Obese dogs have heavy fat over the ribs, along the spine, and around the tail. Morbidly fat dogs have protruding abdomens and fat deposits throughout their bodies. Owners can examine their own dogs for a fat layer on the ribs and the visibility of a waist and tuck-up. Breed characteristics should be taken into account of course, as some breeds have more prominent ribs and tuck-ups when in optimum condition. In general, dogs with protruding bones and the appearance of muscle loss are too thin.

It is estimated that 5-7 percent of White and Black children are obese, while 12 percent of Hispanic boys and 19 percent of Hispanic girls are obese (Office of Maternal and Child Health, 1989). Obesity is present when total body weight is more than 25 percent fat in boys and more than 32 percent fat in girls (Lohman, 1987). Although childhood obesity is often defined as a weight-for-height in excess of 120 percent of the ideal, skinfold measures are more accurate determinants of fatness (Dietz, 1983; Lohman, 1987). A trained technician may obtain skinfold measures relatively easily in either a school or clinical setting. The triceps alone, triceps and subscapular, triceps and calf, and calf alone have been used with children and adolescents. When the triceps and calf are used, a sum of skinfolds of 10-25mm is considered optimal for boys, and 16-30mm is optimal for girls (Lohman, 1987).

The NIH this week published information relating to the strict set of guidelines it set out in June for determining who is considered overweight. The guidelines, which were seen as controversial,are based on the Body Mass Index (BMI) , a height-to-weight formula that ignores whether the weight is from fat or muscle. It also ignores whether someone has a large or small frame. The weights are the same for men and women. The new NIH guidelines mark a turning point in the way doctors think about weight loss, Dr. Xavier Pi-Sunyer , chairman of the NIH obesity panel and director of endocrinology at St. Luke's-Roosevelt Hospital in New York, said in an interview with CNN.

Epidemiology The prevalence of obesity in the USA is high and rising higher. In the past decade, the overall prevalence rose from 25 to 33%, an increase of 1/3. Prevalence varies significantly by sex, age, socioeconomic status, and race (see also Obesity in Ch. 275). Prevalence is 35% among women and 31% among men, and it more than doubles between the ages of 20 and 55. Among women, obesity is strongly associated with socioeconomic status, being twice as common among those with lower socioeconomic status as it is among those with higher status. Although prevalence among black and white men does not differ significantly, obesity is far more common among black than among white women, affecting 60% of middle-aged black women compared with 33% of white women. Etiology In one sense, the cause of obesity is simpleexpending less energy than is consumed. But in another sense, it is elusive, involving the regulation of body weight, primarily body fat.
