Extractions: Causes, incidence, and risk factors: There are numerous causes of osteomalacia. In children, the condition is called rickets and is usually caused by a deficiency of vitamin D . Conditions that may lead to osteomalacia include inadequate dietary intake of vitamin D, inadequate exposure to sunlight (ultraviolet radiation), which produces vitamin D in the body and malabsorption of vitamin D by the intestines. Other conditions that can cause osteomalacia include hereditary or acquired disorders of vitamin D metabolism kidney failure and acidosis ; phosphate depletion associated with low dietary intake of phosphates; kidney disease or cancer (rare), and side effects of medications used to treat seizures Risk factors are related to the causes. In the elderly, there is an increased risk amongst those who tend to remain indoors and who avoid milk because of lactose intolerance Use of very strong sunscreen, limited exposure of the body to sunlight, short days of sunlight, and smog are factors that decrease formation of vitamin D within the body.

El esqueleto representa el principal reservorio de calcio del organismo, constituyendo un 99% del calcio corporal y su liberación sólo ocurre mediante absorción ósea. Cuando se presenta un defecto de formación de la fase inorgánica normal de fosfato de calcio en relación con la matriz ósea orgánica, se produce un aumento de las líneas osteoides generando huesos "blandos". En el tejido óseo seco se aprecia una consistencia acartonada, delgada y notablemente ligera debido a la desminera-lización; en los casos severos y prolon-gados se pueden producir deformaciones mecánicas, fracturas por compresión y disminución del espesor óseo (Rubin y Farber, 1990; Ortner y Putschar, 1985; Brothwell, 1987).

It is therefore common in women who observe 'purdah'. Osteomalacia also occurs during pregnancy in women who do not consume adequate amount of milk and dairy products. What are the signs and symptoms of osteomalacia? People suffering from osteomalacia complain of skeletal discomfort, backache and bone pains. There may be muscular weakness due to which a person may find it difficult to climb stairs or get up from a sitting position. In severe cases the muscles of the hand and the feet go into spasms (carpopedal spasms) and there may be twitching of the muscles of the face. Spontaneous fractures are commonly seen in people suffering from osteomalacia.
