The most noted parasite in turtles and toroises is worms. But worms are only part of the parasitic picture, as there are many non-worm parasites as well. Common parasites include ticks, mites, as well as worms, and other instestinal parasites: such as protozoa. There are generally two types of life cycles. In the direct life cycle, the immature form of the parasite can infect the same host in which it came from. For example, the adult parasite lives in the host's intestine, lays eggs, which are passed in the stool, and then the eggs can infect the same host all over again. Hookworms are an example of a parasite that has a direct life cycle. In the indirect life cycle, the immature form must pass through a different type of host before it can re-enter and reinfect the same host in which it came from. An example here would be roundworms. The adult worm lives in the animal. The immature form cannot re-infect the animal unless an intermediate host picks it up, and then it is reintroduced into another animal where it develops and the cycle starts all over again. Many parasites have life cycles that include a phase of migrating through the body, often form the digestive system to the lungs or other organs, such as roundworm. Others, including hookworm, migrate from their entrance through the skin to other organs.

Extractions: Investigation Ties Parasitic Infections to Fresh Strawberries The Texas Department of Health (TDH) and the Houston Department of Health and Human Services have tied an outbreak of diarrhea in Houston to fresh strawberries and advise Houston residents not to eat fresh strawberries until more information is available about their safety. The diarrhea is caused by cyclospora cayetanensis, a parasite health officials believe is on and possibly inside the strawberries. "We don't have enough information yet to take all fresh strawberries off the shelves, but we don't have enough information to guarantee their safety, either. We need to warn the public of the possible danger," said David R. Smith, M.D., Texas Commissioner of Health. He said TDH investigators are working with growers, wholesalers and retailers to sort out shipment and sales information. "At this point, we don't know how or where the strawberries are being contaminated or how widespread the problem is." Health officials say washing the strawberries thoroughly will not eliminate the parasite if it is inside the fruit.
