Extractions: P arasitic infections of the GI tract are a common cause of disease worldwide. These infections are prevalent in areas with poor sanitation and hygiene, low educational standards, and overcrowded living conditions. Although previously uncommon in the United States, these infections appear to be on the rise in this country. Two factors may explain the increased incidence of parasitic infections in the United States. First, the population, both civilian and military, has become more mobile as the number of people traveling internationally has steadily increased. Second, the number of immigrants from areas endemic for parasitic infections, such as southeast Asia and Central and South America, has increased. Extractions: Not only humans can become victim of parasitic infections. Animals, both livestock as well as companion animals, can be infected with a wide variety of parasites. Parasitic infections of livestock can have important economical consequences due to loss of production. It is impossible to cover the whole range of parasitic infections of veterinary importance. At present, we are focussing on the following diseases. Visceral leishmaniasis is not only a human health problem. The canine reservoir, mainly household and stray dogs, can also suffer from the disease. Canine leishmaniasis is becoming more and more important in countries around the Mediterranean Sea and in many countries in Latin America. However, the disease is also more and more frequently reported as an import disease in northern European countries and recently an outbreak of leishmaniasis was reported in kennels in eastern states of the USA. The diagnosis of canine leishmaniasis is just as difficult as human visceral leishmaniasis. The clinical signs are very variable and the histopathology is non-specific (the lesions are often similar to those observed in other infectious diseases). Because of the previously mentioned limitations of the direct diagnostic methods, a number of indirect immunological methods for the diagnosis of canine leishmaniasis, have been developed at KIT Biomedical Research, including an adapted protocol for the
