Extractions: Progeria is a rare genetic condition characterized by an appearance of accelerated aging in children. Its name is derived from the Greek and means "prematurely old." The classic type is the Hutchinson-Gilford Progeria Syndrome which was first described in England in 1886 by Dr. Jonathan Hutchinson and again in 1886 and 1904 by Dr. Hastings Gilford. HOW COMMON IS PROGERIA? The classic syndrome has a reported incidence of about 1 in 8 million newborns, and the total incidence is estimated to be about 1 in 4 million. It affects both sexes equally and all races. Since first described, more than 100 cases have been identified around the world. In this decade, children with progeria have been reported in Algeria, Australia, Austria, Canada, China, England, France, Germany, Mexico, Puerto Rico, South Africa, South America, Switzerland, Turkey, the United States, Venezuela, and Vietnam. Whether it's a visit with a celebrity hero, a family outing, a trip to Disney World® or a special gift Sunshine has never said "no" to a deserving child. The majority of wishes Sunshine fulfils are to visit Central Florida attractions. Therefore in February of 1990 Sunshine opened the doors of its' Dream Village and since then approximately 1000 special children and their families have enjoyed the facilities at this special place for special children. In a fairytale like setting with a gingerbread facade, the Sunshine Foundation Dream Village is a place where children and their families stay while they briefly forget the pain and suffering that is part of their everyday lives. In addition, each year Sunshine sponsors a worldwide reunion of children suffering from Progeria. Extractions: Progeria Reunions In 1981, the Sunshine Foundation had been in existence for six years and had handled approximately 500 special dreams of seriously ill, chronically ill, and physically challenged children. It was brought to Sunshine's attention via a newspaper article that a young boy in South Africa, named Fransie, had a dream to visit Pinocchio. The inspiration for this dream came from this boy seeing himself in a mirror. Because of his wooden appearance, he felt in some way related to Pinocchio. Having read the article, Sunshine embarked on making yet another dream come true, unaware that this particular endeavor would bring about the knowledge of a very rare illness to the world. Fransie had his dream come true in December 1981. The Sunshine Foundation flew Fransie and his family to Disneyland where he saw Pinocchio. During his visit to the United States, three other children, also suffering from Progeria, met with him. Sunshine began receiving correspondence from other families whose children had similar characteristics. That following June, 1982, Sunshine sponsored the first gathering of all known children suffering from Hutchinson-Gilford Progeria, a rare aging disease. At that first reunion, eight Progeria children and their families gathered at Greenway Lodge in the Pocono Mountains of PA. Since that time, Sunshine has sponsored 20 Annual Progeria Reunions, touching the lives of these special children forever. The reunions give these children a week to enjoy with other children like themselves. The time they spend together is not only fun, but it is something that gives them strength and a sense of anticipation in looking forward to the next year.

Derived from the Greek, it means "prematurely old" and is characterized by an appearance of accelerated aging. Progeria, first described in England in 1886, affects both males and females of all ethnic backgrounds. Only one in eight million babies is born with progeria, and only one in four million people contact the disease later in life. Progeria of the adult is called, Werner's Syndrome. Children with progeria have delayed tooth formation, aged-looking skin, baldness and characteristics of dwarfism. Because of this, they all tend to look alike. Along with their unusual appearance, they can suffer from stiff joints, hip dislocation problems, nosebleeds, head aches artheriosclerosis, and cardiovascular problems. Their bodies actually age eight to ten years for every year they are alive. Ironically, they are often of above-average intelligence. Kids about two years old start to exhibit signs of progeria by a tightness of the skin, a failure to gain weight, hair loss and other physical characteristics. At this point the physicians and parents recognize a problem and the diagnosis of progeria is made. Researchers are baffled as to what causes this disease and at this time, there is no cure and no treatments. The average life-expectancy for a child with progeria is 13 years.
