Cat - any domestic feline animal ( Felis domesticus) Dog - any domestic canine animal ( Canis familiaris Bite or Bitten - means that the skin has been penetrated by an animal's teeth. Isolation - confinement of an animal exposed or potentially exposed to rabies. Non-bite Exposure - means that saliva from an animal has come in contact with an open wound or a mucous membrane. Own - to keep, harbor, or have control, charge, or custody of an animal. Owner - any person who keeps, harbors, or has charge or control of, or permits any animal to habitually be or remain on, or be lodged or fed within his or her house, yard, or premises. This term shall not apply to veterinarians or kennel operators who have temporary custody, for a period of less than 60 days, of animals owned by others. Animal Shelter - a public facility that is maintained by a government entity, or a private facility providing contractual services to a government entity for the purpose of impounding or harboring animals.

Humans and other animals can become infected through a bite or scratch from an animal with rabies, or if the rabies virus comes in contact with an open cut or the moist tissues of the mouth, nose or eyes. Rabies is fatal if untreated. Most of Canada's rabies is carried by wildlife. This makes control difficult and eradication almost impossible. Foxes, skunks, bats and raccoons are the main carriers and pose a continuing threat because they often live close to people. If they infect your farm animals or pets, they may endanger you. Keep your pets under control. Don't let them run free, especially at night.

Extractions: April 2002 Rabies Rabies is an acute and deadly viral infection of the central nervous system. It is one of the most terrifying diseases known to man. Although rabies in humans is rare in the United States, as many as 18,000 Americans get rabies shots each year because they have been in contact with animals that may be rabid (rabies-infected). In 1998 according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), only one person died of rabies in this country. In other parts of the world, however, many people die of rabies each year. The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that around the world more than 40,000 people die every year from rabies. WHO also estimates that 10 million people worldwide are treated after being exposed to animals that may have rabies. Rabies is caused by a virus that is in the saliva of infected animals, and it is usually transmitted by bites from infected animals. All warm-blooded animals can get rabies, and some may serve as natural reservoirs of the virus. Rabies is found in all of the United States, except Hawaii, and in many other countries around the world, including Canada and Mexico. The disease may be absent from large areas for many years, and then reappear suddenly or gradually by invasion from bordering countries or by the introduction of an infected animal.

Advertise Rabies is a virus that can affect any warm-blooded animal; whenever someone is bitten by an animal, the chance of rabies exists. Although the incidence of rabies in humans is low, more than 30,000 people undergo treatment for possible exposure to rabies in the US. Rabies primarily attacks the nervous system and causes an encephalitis. The virus is transmitted in saliva from the bite of an infected animal. The incubation period prior to clinical signs is extremely variable, but is usually two-to-eight weeks. The virus will begin shedding in saliva a short time before clinical signs develop, usually less than 10 days. For both humans and domestic animals, the primary source of rabies is the bite of a rabid wild animal. The most common of these are skunk, raccoon, bat, and fox. Currently, the number of cats infected with rabies has surpassed that of dogs. The main reasons are that there are now more cats than dogs and cats tend to roam more often.

The virus slowly travels up the nerve to reach the CNS where it replicates and then travels down nerves to the salivary glands where there is further replication. The time it takes to do this depends upon the length of the nerve - a bite on the foot will have a very much longer incubation period than a bite on the face. It is located at the Wadsworth Center's Griffin Laboratory facility in the Albany suburb of Guilderland. The laboratory's primary service functions are the diagnosis of rabies in animals and the detection and quantification of rabies antibody in human serum. Veterinarians, public health officials, physicians and other professionals needing to access laboratory services can find information regarding submission of samples at this site. The diagnosis of rabies in animals is performed on specimens submitted for examination following a bite or other possible exposure to a human or domestic animal, when the confinement and observation of the offending animal is not appropriate or possible. The results of these examinations are generally used by physicians and local health authorities to decide if rabies postexposure treatment is necessary, and therefore require the highest standards of sensitivity and specificity. The results of these tests also serve to produce rabies surveillance data.

The 100% fatality rate of this infection when left untreated, and its near global distribution (estimated 60,000 human fatalities per year worldwide), makes rabies one of the most significant and dread diseases. While endemic dog rabies is of major concern worldwide, rabies control programs have reduced the number of dog rabies cases in the United States to less than 200/year. However, a large reservoir of rabies exists in wildlife animals (racoon, skunk, bat and fox). In the United States, 26 cases of human rabies have been reported since 1990. Infection is prevented in humans by injection of rabies immunoglobulin followed by a series of injections with rabies vaccine. However, to achieve this success, it is estimated that the cost associated with rabies control exceeds hundreds of millions of dollars annually. Currently, this species occurs only in localised areas of this range. African wild dogs are nomadic, highly social canids and form packs of up to 28 individuals with an average of around 8 - 12 members (Fig. 1). The main prey consists of antelope, which they mostly hunt down co-operatively. Packs are strictly hierarchical, each with a dominant (alpha) male and female. Usually only the alpha individuals breed, although the other members help to raise the young by bringing them food and by defending them. The average litter sizes is 7 - 10, although up to 19 may be born.
