Raynauds is described as Raynauds disease Raynauds phenomenon , or Raynauds syndrome Although some people carelessly use these terms interchangeably, these arent all the same thing. Whats going on? It helps to know a little history. Raynaud was a French medical student in the late 1800s who had to write a thesis as one of the requirements for graduation. He decided to write about the color changes he saw in the hands of women waiting for the streetcar on cold winter days. In true Raynauds a persons fingers will blanch white when they are very cold and there is little or no blood circulating to the fingers. As the hands warm up the blood flow returns and the fingers turn red. After this they go back to their normal condition which is usually bluish and cold with poor circulation. Unless the fingers turn all three colors it is not Raynauds. This same sequence of color changes can be provoked by emotion in some people (like flushing when you are embarrassed). It may also occur in the toes and infrequently in the ears and nose, etc. when they become cold.

A person with this disorder may also experience numbness and tingling. This constriction of the blood vessels is thought to be due to an exaggerated reaction to cold or stress. It has been estimated that some 10% of women suffer from Raynaud's. Some 95% of scleroderma patients suffer from Raynaud's, but it must be stressed that only a small number of people with Raynaud's go on to develop scleroderma. The key feature of Raynaud's is colour changes associated with exposure to cold or any change in temperature. These changes occur most commonly in the hands, but may also affect the feet and occasionally other extremities, such as the nose or the tips of the ears. Raynaud's hands turn white, then blue, then later red as the circulation improves. In severe Raynaud's there may be considerable pain, ulceration or gangrene. Raynaud's can occur in children, although it is rare. The symptoms are the same as those of the adult disease.

Current areas of research activity include a prospective evaluation evaluation of quality of life in patients with peripheral vascular disease and the effect of various interventions including balloon angioplasty and femorodistal bypass surgery, a pilot study looking into the effects of a supervised exercise programme on patients with claudication, a prospective randomised trial of autologous blood transfusion in patients undergoing elective abdominal aortic aneurysm surgery and the development of a virtual reality endovascular AAA training model. Other activity areas include a study looking into the pathogenesis of ischaemia-reperfusion in patients undergoing femoro-distal bypass surgery, prospective study looking into the efficacy of a minimally invasive bypass operation for patients with claudication. The development of a flow rig to investigate the properties of interposition vein collars techniques and an investigation into the anatomical geometry of the renal arteries and the implications for stent design. Many of these areas of activity have been awarded grants from a variety of funding sources, and are performed in conjunction with staff from a whole host of multi-disciplinary professions.
