   Extractions: Fax: (609) 723-6700 The Scleroderma Research Foundation's mission is provide communication and support for persons and family members whose lives have been affected by Scleroderma, promote awareness by educating the general public and the medical profession about Scleroderma symptoms and effects for early diagnosis and treatment, and fund research. They do not have support groups at this time, but do have information on how to start a support group and will provide assistance to individuals who wish to start a group in their locality. They also provide parent-to-parent matching. They have several brochures including, "Learning to Cope with Scleroderma," "Scleroderma: What is it?" "About Scleroderma," and "Understanding and Managing Scleroderma." SRF also has several facts sheets on various aspects of the condition and a new patient packet that contains many of the above mentioned brochure and fact sheets. The Foundation has a bibliography of articles from doctors that are available upon request. SRF collects information on physicians and researchers who treat/study the condition and disseminate this information to its members. They will provide information and referral to other resources. Additionally, they host a national conference every two or three years. Call for further information.

    Extractions: What is Scleroderma? Scleroderma is a disease which affects many body systems, but is primarily characterized by thickening and tightening of the skin. More women are affected than men, and the dominant age group is between 20 to 50. The lungs are affected in 70-90% of cases, and develop either fibrosis or changes in the blood vessels which lead to increased pressure in the pulmonary arteries. The fibrosis usually starts with with an increase in lung fiber density near the posterior (back) regions of the lungs. CT imagery frequently shows the initial effects as an amorphous increase in lung density with an appearance like "ground glass". Later stages of fibrosis are characterized by the emergence of a network of coarse lines. These coarse lines eventually develop into regions containing large numbers of small cysts. This end-stage effect is sometimes referred to as "honeycombing" and is non-reversable. The Goal of our Research The goal of our research is to use High Resolution CT (HRCT) imagery to automatically detect and quantify Scleroderma in its early stages. Scleroderma treatments are most effective when applied during these early stages. Automated detection methods can aid doctors in gauging the effectiveness of new treatments over time. We hope to not only quantify regions of Scleroderma lung tissue, but also qualify them as to their type ("ground glass" density, abnormal lines and "honeycombing").

Each application should have the quality of an NIH proposal. Projects of investigators new to the field of scleroderma are preferred, although studies in new directions by established researchers will be considered. B. Budgets Budgets for up to, but not exceeding, $75,000 for a one-year award or $150,000 for a two-year award are acceptable. Principal or co-investigator salaries may be funded for no more than $10,000 upon evidence of the supporting institution's matching this amount. Salaries for support personnel or current research post-doctoral fellows engaged in the project may be requested. The Scleroderma Foundation Research Funding Program allows eight percent of proposal budgets to be allocated towards overhead.
