Feed Back T he Golden Age of Piracy came about in the late 1600's, almost 200 years after Columbus had first sighted the Bahamas, and lasted until about 1722. Although a brief period (just over thirty years), it was filled with marauders, pirates, and scoundrels of every kind, all attempting to acquire immense wealth and vast riches. The Pirates ranged their travels from Madagascar to the eastern coast of North America, trading their stolen goods to whomever would deal. Most operated mainly from the Caribbean waylaying unguarded merchant ships for the precious cargos from the rich new land. When England made peace with Spain in 1689, many privateering veterans had already turned to the lucrative calling of piracy. Privateers were men armed with a letter of marque who looted and pillaged in the name of their country; therefore their actions were condoned. Perfect examples of these mercenaries were men like Frances Drake and Henry Morgan, both of whom were so successful they received knighthood from the crown. Later Morgan actually became the lieutenant governor of Jamaica.

Extractions: Vitamin C (ascorbic acid), a reducing agent, is necessary to maintain the enzyme prolyl hydroxylase in an active form, most likely by keeping its iron atom in a reduced state. The precursor molecule to the protein collagen, procollagen, contains an unusual amino acid sequence in that every third amino acid is a glycine and contains a high frequency of two amino acids not found in any other proteins - hydroxyproline and hydroxylysine. These latter two amino acids are converted from proline and lysine, respectively, after the procollagen molecule has been synthesized. The hydroxylation of proline and lysine in procollagen is carried out by the enzyme prolyl hydroxylase using vitamin C as a cofactor. A vitamin C deficiency results in an underhydroxylation of proline and lysine in collagen which results in a lower melting temperature of the resulting collagen fibers which causes a breakdown of the protein collagen needed for connective tissue, bones and dentin, the major portion of teeth. Collagen is a cementing material that binds cells together, and is an essential connective tissue protein in the body. Whenever the body is wounded, collagen glues the separated tissues together to form a scar. A lack of collagen causes the walls of the body's blood capillaries to break down and hemorrhaging occurs in cells throughout the body. When capillaries lose the "glue" that holds them together, symptoms of scurvy appear.

Scurvy was described as early as 1500 BC in the Ebers papyrus and other descriptions appeared in Greek and Roman writings. It struck the crew of Magellan's around the world journey in 1519-22 and a British report in 1600 indicated that in the previous 20 years some 10,000 mariners had been destroyed by the disease. O n May 20, 1747, Lind divided his 12 ill men into six groups of two each. All 12 shared a common diet for breakfast, lunch and dinner but each group received a different supplement as follows: quart of apple juice daily 25 drops of elixir vitriol (sulfuric acid and aromatics) two spoonfuls of vinegar three times a day concoction of herbs and spices half-pint of sea water daily two oranges and one lemon daily T he two men who ate the oranges and lemon recovered immediately. One was fit for duty in six days and the other was also well in six days and was appointed as nurse to all the others. The two men who drank apple cider improved but were not well enough to work. Extractions: NATURE CURE FOR CHILDREN'S DISEASES SCURVY Scurvy is perhaps the oldest known deficiency disease. However, its specific relationship to ascorbic acid was not recognised until the 20th century. It generally occurs between six and 18 months of age, but can start much earlier in pre-mature babies or those borne of mothers who lacked nutritious food during their later stages of pregnancies. Symptoms Scurvy is caused by lack of vitamin C or ascorbic acid. Inadequate intake of fresh fruits and vegetables can lead to this condition. The disease is likely to attack the rich as well as the poor, becuse it arises in the system not from an insufficient diet quantitatively, but from a diet lacking in organic mineral salts so essential to health and vitality. The child with scurvy should be given liberal quantities of vitamin C-rich foods. This vitamin is found in fresh fruits and vegetables, but is llargely destroyed in cooking especially if baking soda is used. The amount of this vitamin required is between 10 and 29 mg. daily. The normal diet, however, contains much less amount than this. It can, therefore, if necessary, be taken as a tablet of ascorbic acid. One of the best remedies for scurvy is the use of Indian gooseberry (amla), which is the richest known source of vitamin C. The powder of dry amla , mixed with equal quantity of sugar, should be given in half a teaspoon doses thrice daily, with milk. If fresh amla is available, it should be cooked like vegetable and eaten.
