But this line of defense depends on a functional immune system. When the immune system is suppressed, disorders of the skin may appear. Organ transplant and cancer patients who undergo immune suppressive therapies can develop skin disorders, such as Kaposi's sarcoma or herpes outbreaks. In HIV infection, skin disorders often occur early in disease and may recur or become chronic. In HIV-infected people, skin disorders caused by viruses are common. This article reviews viral skin diseases in AIDS and emphasizes that early detection and treatment are the best course of action. MOLLUSCUM CONTAGIOSUM Molluscum contagiosum is caused by a pox virus. Molluscum are benign, pimple-like lesions which occur in both children and adults; the primary sites of involvement for adults are the face, buttocks and genitals. In appearance, molluscum are smooth translucent bumps, sometimes flesh-colored, sometimes yellowish or pearly. The lesions have a sack-like core of viral material. They may cause mild discomfort and cosmetic frustration, but are neither acutely painful nor life-threatening. Molluscum is believed to be transmitted by both sexual and nonsexual routes, although epidemiological data are inconclusive. Since molluscum usually goes away on its own in healthy people, those with it often do not see a doctor. Furthermore, molluscum is not reported to public health authorities like other sexually transmitted diseases. Before AIDS, molluscum was primarily regarded as a childhood disease transmitted through ordinary child's play.

Skin problems are often caused by an immune system reaction, signifying an allergy. Allergic skin conditions can take several forms and are due to various causes. The most common allergic skin reactions and conditions are atopic dermatitis, urticaria and angioedema, and allergic contact dermatitis. Atopic Dermatitis Atopic dermatitis, also called eczema, is an allergic skin disorder often affecting the face, elbows and knees. Itching is the hallmark symptom and can sometimes be very intense. With time, the lesions tend to scale and flake. Oozing will occur if a bacterial or viral infection is introduced by scratching. Identifying the cause of the itch, when possible, is essential in relieving the dermatitis. Common triggers include allergens, overheating or sweating, emotional stress, eating certain foods and contact with irritants such as wool, pets, soaps or other agents. Urticaria and Angioedema Urticaria, also called hives, are red, very itchy, swollen areas of the skin that can range in size and appear anywhere on the body. Most common are acute cases of hives, where the cause is readily identifiableoften a viral infection, drug, food or latex. These hives usually go away spontaneously with or without medical intervention or removal of the trigger. Some people have chronic hives that occur almost daily for months to years. For these individuals, various circumstances or events such as scratching, pressure or "nerves" may aggravate hives. However, eliminating these triggers has little effect on the natural course of this bothersome condition.

The widespread use of VDTs has been accompanied, however, by expressions of concern from VDT operators, trade unions, and the media about possible adverse health effects associated with VDT use. Adverse pregnancy outcomes, eye problems and skin disorders have been blamed on the electromagnetic radiation emissions from VDTs. Radiation and the VDT Most VDTs currently in use are based on cathode-ray tube (CRT) technology and the information in this bulletin applies only to this type of VDT. The VDT is designed to emit visible radiation (light) with a brightness that is adjustable by the operator. In creating the display, however, other types of electromagnetic radiation are also generated, in particular, extremely low frequency, radiofrequency, infrared, ultraviolet and X- ray emissions. The CRT is an evacuated glass tube which has a source of electrons at one end and a screen, which is coated on the inside with a phosphor, at the other. When a sufficiently high voltage is applied to the CRT, a focussed beam of electrons is produced which is then scanned across the screen. The beam is switched on and off in order to generate the display. The interaction of these electrons with the phosphor causes the emission of visible radiation, plus a small amount of ultraviolet radiation, from the screen. This interaction also produces low energy X-rays which are absorbed by the thick glass envelope. Some infrared radiation is emitted as a result of heat generated within the electronic circuitry during VDT operation.
