Diagnostic criteria include: Both multiple motor and one or more vocal tics present at some time, although not necessarily simultaneously; The occurrence of tics many times a day (usually in bouts) nearly every day or intermittently throughout the span of more than one year; Periodic changes in the number, frequency, type and location of the tics, and in the waxing and waning of their severity. Symptoms can sometimes disappear for weeks or months at a time; Onset before the age of 18. Although the word "involuntary" is used to describe the nature of the tics, this is not entirely accurate. It would not be true to say that people with TS have absolutely no control over their tics, as though it was some type of spasm; rather, a more appropriate term would be "compelling." People with TS feel an irresistable urge to perform their tics, much like the need to scratch a mosquito bite. Some people with TS are able to hold back their tics for up to hours at a time, but this only leads to a stronger outburst of tics once they are finally allowed to be expressed. Although the DSM-IV has recently changed the upper age of onset from 21 down to 18, the Tourette Syndrome Association Medical Advisory Board is working to have it reverted back to 21, as is listed in the DSM-III-R.

They are more easily recognized than precisely defined. Disorders involving tics generally are divided into categories according to age of onset, duration of symptoms, and the presence of vocal or phonic tics in addition to motor tics. Transient tic disorders often begin during the early school years and can occur in up to 15% of all children. Common tics include eye blinking, nose puckering, grimacing, and squinting. Transient vocalizations are less common and include various throat sounds, humming, or other noises. Childhood tics may be bizarre, such as licking the palm or poking and pinching the genitals. Transient tics last only weeks or a few months and usually are not associated with specific behavioral or school problems. They are especially noticeable with heightened excitement or fatigue. As with all tic syndromes, boys are three to four times more often afflicted than girls. While transient tics by definition do not persist for more than a year, it is not uncommon for a child to have series of transient tics over the course of several years.

Tourette's syndrome (TS) is a neurological condition which results in involuntary movements and vocalizations called tics. The more common tics include things like sniffing, coughing, throat clearing, shoulder shrugging, eye blinking, and neck stretches. Many laypersons inaccurately believe that all persons with Tourette's have coprolalia - the involuntary utterances of inappropriate phrases - although the majority of persons with TS do not. Gilles de la Tourette's syndrome - sometimes called a disorder - was once believed to be very rare, but current research shows that it is not, and that the majority of cases go undiagnosed and undetected. The purpose of this website is to help families with a new diagnosis better understand and interpret literature about TS and realize that the prognosis for children diagnosed with tics is often optimistic. If you’ve just received a diagnosis, you may be in a panic, reading everything you can and thinking "Now What?"
