This is my first attempt at doing this, so I hope everyone is patient. Thanks in advance! I grew up in a very small town; Philippi West-by-gosh-Virginia Almost Heaven . I also use to spend a lot of time in Elkins , West Virgina, which is home of the Forest Festival. I am an avid Mickey Mouse fan and collector along with collecting angels, anything to do with the 'Iris' flower Coca-Cola. The main reason for wanting to do this page is the fact that I have a permanent ileostomy, but I wear NO appliance! I suffered from Ulcerative Colitis for a very long time and was not able to be diagnosed until I needed emergency surgery. In July of 1996, I had to have a complete (non-reversible) permant ileostomy. A friend found an article about being able to live a life being appliance free. This lead me to further research on this surgery BCIR . Within three months I started experencing difficulties with my ileostomy. In July of 1997, I went to St. Petersburg, FL and had this wonderful surgery performed. I now live an appliance free life and am so thankful for the friends and family that stood behind me in this difficult time that I experienced. I would like to also thank Dr. Pollack and his wonderful staff in giving me back a life I thouht was never possible.

It causes inflammation and destruction of the tissue lining the colon. What is going on in the body? Ulcerative colitis occurs when the lining of the colon is attacked by the body's immune system. It involves an autoimmune response, which means that the person's body produces antibodies against its own tissues. The disease usually starts at the rectum and involves entire sections of the colon. The attack may cause abscesses, or pus pockets, in the lining. What are the signs and symptoms of the disease? As the colon lining breaks down, the person experiences abdominal pain. The pain is usually on the left side of the abdomen. It may improve after the person has a bowel movement. Bloody diarrhea is another common symptom. The person may have 10 to 20 bowel movements a day. The person may also have pain and cramping around the rectum. Other common symptoms of ulcerative colitis include: fatigue fever loss of appetite loss of fluid and nutrients rectal bleeding unintentional weight loss Ulcerative colitis can also cause problems in other parts of the body. Supporting Research Ulcerative colitis (UC) is a chronic disease that causes inflammation and ulcers (open sores) in the innermost layers of the large intestine. A fine case-control study from Chicago put some figures on this, and the observation was followed by randomised trials where patients were treated with nicotine to allow us to establish causation and the magnitude of the effect. Compared with those who had never smoked, current smokers were much less likely to have ulcerative colitis (odds ratio 0.13, 95% CI 0.05 to 0.38) - that is they were about eight times less likely to have ulcerative colitis. Former smokers' risk was no different from non-smokers. Two randomised studies have tried to answer the obvious question - does nicotine help in treating ulcerative colitis?

Ulcerative colitis is an inflammation of the colon which can produce sores or ulcerations of the colon. The colon is also called the bowel or large intestine. Ulcerative colitis occurs most often in people 15 to 30 years old. Causes: It is not known exactly what triggers ulcerative colitis (which appears to be an autoimmune disorder). One cause may be a family history of the disease. Aside from genetics, some foods, medicines, an infection, or stress can also cause flare ups of colitis. Signs and Symptoms: You may have repeated BMs which may be blood-specked, loose, or runny. Other signs may be abdominal (belly) pain, fever, chills, nausea, weight loss, malnutrition, anemia, rashes, joint aches or feeling tired. These signs may come and go any time. Medical Care: Your blood and BMs may be sent to a lab for tests to help find the cause of the colitis. Typically the diagnosis is confirmed by a biopsy performed via sigmoidoscopy or colonoscopy (fiberoptic scopes used to look directly at the colon). You may need medicine, rest, or a special diet. The most commonly used medicines are immunosuppressants which blunt the abnormal immune response. These medicines may be given either orally or by enema. At this time there is no cure for ulcerative colitis. But you should feel better with medicine or other treatments. You may need to be put in the hospital for intravenous fluids and nutrition if you have a bad attack of colitis.
