Er variiert sowohl in der Form als auch in seiner Verbreitung. Die "Nesseln" bilden dabei verschieden große, manchmal einzeln stehende, münzgroße, manchmal zusammenhängende Bereiche. Diese Hauterscheinungen heißen Quaddeln. Mit dem Ausschlag tritt starker Juckreiz auf, der in der Regel innerhalb eines Tages vergeht. Nesselausschlag kann einmalig oder auch in Schüben auftreten. Wie bekommt man einen Nesselausschlag? Kommen Sie mit bestimmten Allergenen (Medikamente, Speisen und Getränke aller Art, eingeatmete Stoffe etc.) in Kontakt (selten können auch physikalische Reize wie Kälte, Wasser etc. oder psychische Reize wie Stress, Überlastung usw. einen Nesselausschlag verursachen), setzt Ihr Organismus bei einer bestehenden Unverträglichkeit gegen diesen Stoff Histamin und andere irritierende Substanzen frei. Diese erweitern die Blutgefäße der Haut. Daraufhin geben die Gefäße Flüssigkeit ab, die sich in der Haut ansammelt und zu dem Ausschlag führt. Welche Symptome treten auf?

He had consulted several medical experts, none of whom could identify the underlying cause. Finally, physicians at the Scripps Clinic referred him to the National Jewish Medical and Research Center. Admitted as an inpatient, the man was placed on a fast, subsisting on a non-allergenic protein drink for five days. Within 48 hours, the hives were gone. Further tests pointed to a probable precipitating factor, and subsequent modifications in the patient's diet confirmed what we had suspected: the urticaria had resulted from an allergy to wheat. Uriticaria is classified as chronic when it is recurrent and continues for at least six weeks. Many physicians view it as a relatively minor problem, but if hives persist, they can become physically and psychologically disabling. This condition is rarely a trivial concern for the patient who suffers from it.

This disorder is classically characterized by a spectrum of symptoms occurring during physical activity that ranges from mild cutaneous signs to severe systemic manifestations such as hypotension, syncope and even death. In susceptible persons, ingestion of certain foods or medications before physical activity may be a predisposing factor for exercise-induced anaphylaxis. Urticaria is a common skin disorder that is characterized by the spontaneous development of swollen pink or red itching areas called "hives", "whelps", or "wheels". These are produced by the leakage of a liquid portion of the blood through the walls of tiny blood vessels into the skin or mucous membranes of the body. Urticaria usually comes on abruptly, with large numbers of "hives" in repetitive crops. A "hive" can be a few inches to several inches in size and when individual "hives" join together they can even cover an entire body area. An individual "hive", from a particular crop, will usually disappear after a few minutes to several hours without leaving any permanent changes in the skin. Typically, most individuals, have a single attack of urticaria that lasts only briefly - for several days. This is referred to as ACUTE URTICARIA. Unfortunately, some cases of urticaria may also persist and "come and go" with attacks being intermittent or continual for years. When urticaria lasts more than three months, we refer to that type as CHRONIC URTICARIA.

Hives are a type of skin rash characterized by groups of flat pale red raised swellings on the skin. The rash is usually short-lived (each outbreak lasts about two hours), but as some areas are fading, new areas often flare up. The outbreaks can last from a few minutes to a few weeks. The rash is intensely itchy, and sometimes can burn or sting, causing extreme discomfort for the afflicted. The most common type is acute urticaria, caused by an allergic reaction to a physical allergen, such as food, bee sting, drugs, etc. Of those cases not directly attributed to a specific allergen, the most common type of hives (80-95% of cases) is idiopathic urticaria , meaning there is no known cause for the condition. There are many other types of hives , distinguished by their cause. One that is commonly associated with idiopathic is cholinergic urticaria . This type is caused by raised skin temperature, such as in exercise, hot baths or showers, and emotional reactions such as stress or anger. By definition this is urticaria that has persisted for over three months. There is unlikely to be an allergic cause and there is increasing evidence that chronic urticaria is auto-immune. Advise patients to avoid all Aspirin containing drugs, which may aggravate chronic urticaria. There is no need to refer patients with chronic urticaria for allergy testing. EG: Dermographism. Many other physical factors may induce urticaria, eg: Cold Vibration Dermographism can easily be demonstrated by firm stroking of the skin with the thumbnail and whealing resulting in five to ten minutes. Treat with non-sedating anti-histamines. Any case where a physical urticaria is suspected other than dermographism. Otherwise, try various non-sedating anti-histamines and remember it is sometimes worth combining an HI and H2 receptor antagonist (eg: adding Ranitidine 150 mg bd to Triludan, Zirtek, Clarityn or Telfast etc).
