Extractions: Friedrich Daniel von Recklinghausen von Recklinghausen wrote one of the early descriptions of haemochromatosis and introduced this term into the medical literature. In 1862, while still Virchows assistant, he published two important papers, one showing that connective tissue contained spaces which were drained by lymphatics and in which cells were present. He showed some of these cells had amoeboid movements and identified them as leukocytes. He established the method of using silver to stain the lines of junction of cells and his work led to Julius Friedrich Cohnheims (1839-1884) studies on leukocyte migration and inflammation. Cohnheim was a young assistant in the laboratory at the time. von Recklinghausen wrote both in German and Latin. Recklinghausen was widely known for his postgraduate teaching in the dissection room and the laboratory, attracting students from all over the world. Many of them later had great success and achieved high academic status. Still one of Recklinghausen's students in his memories said that his teacher had little contact with his candidates and rarely spoke to them. Recklinghausen was quite a colourful personality and pleasant colleague. He opposed Robert Kochs concept that the tubercle bacillus was the cause of tuberculosis. He would argue that to say that tuberculous lesions contained Kochs bacillus and therefore the bacillus was the cause of tuberculosis was like saying that the pyramid-like piles of horse manure (a frequent sight in Strassburg streets before the advent of the motor car) were du to sparrows which perched on top of them.

Extractions: De ziekte van Von Recklinghausen is een aangeboren erfelijke aandoening die veroorzaakt wordt door een verandering in het genetisch materiaal (mutatie). Hierdoor ontbreekt een bepaald eiwit (neurofibromine). Het ontstaan van gezwellen kan het gevolg zijn (tumoren). Niet elke patiënt heeft precies dezelfde kenmerken, zelfs niet binnen één familie. De meest voorkomende kenmerken zijn de lichtbruine vlekken (café-au-lait vlekken) op de huid, die vaak al bij de geboorte aanwezig zijn. Soms ontstaan deze na een paar maanden tot een jaar. Vanaf de puberteit kunnen gezwellen (tumoren) ontstaan in of onder de huid, die uitgaan van de huidzenuwen (neurofibromen) en Lisch knobbeltjes, kleine geheel ongevaarlijke bobbeltjes in het regenboogvlies (iris) van het oog. Daarnaast is er op de kinderleeftijd vaak al sprake van een groot hoofd, kleine lengte, motorische problemen, leer-, spraak- en gedragsproblemen. Vertraagde geestelijke ontwikkeling is mogelijk. Er kunnen ook andere ernstige complicaties optreden, zoals onder andere gezwellen in het centrale zenuwstelsel (bijvoorbeeld in de oogzenuw), misvormingen door de neurofibromen, stofwisselingsstoornissen en een licht verhoogde kans op een kwaadaardige tumor.

At age 30, suspicion of neurologic deficit affecting the third cranial nerve. At age 32, excision of a mandibular neuro-fibroma. At age 41, appearence of continuous right thoracic pain, causing insomnia. Histology: neurofibrosarcoma grade III. No adjuvant treatment. Survival of 27 months without signs of recurrence. In 1996, reappearance of right thoracic pain. Repeated thoracotomy and subtotal excision of a recurrent neurofibrosarcoma. Well for 5 months. In October 1996, left lower thoracic pain. A CT-scan and X-rays demonstrate a left paravertebral tho-racoabdominal mass. A course of radiotherapy was tried with no obvious results. In January 1997, appearance of multiple pleuropulmonary metastases, with worsening of pain, development of an important dyspnoea. Chemotherapy treatment with 18 sessions of epiadriamycin 60 mg i.v. associated with 50 mg amphotericin B i.v. Spectacular disappearance of the symptoms and a very satisfactory partial remission. The patient started working parttime. In May 1998, further deteroration with an increase in the size of the pulmonary masses. The patient died in June 1998.
