Book Description
This up-to-date electronic book on CD-ROM provides the best collection available anywhere of official Federal government information and documents on the subject of acoustic neuroma. This CD-ROM uses next-generation search technology that allows complete indexing and makes all files on the disc fully searchable. For patients, practical information is provided in clearly written patient education documents. For medical professionals, doctor reference tools and texts have detailed technical information and clinical background material.

A vestibular schwannoma (also known as acoustic neuroma, acoustic neurinoma, or acoustic neurilemoma) is a benign, usually slow-growing tumor that develops from the balance and hearing nerves supplying the inner ear. The tumor comes from an overproduction of Schwann cells that normally wrap around nerve fibers. As it grows, it presses against the hearing and balance nerves, causing unilateral (one-sided) or asymmetric hearing loss, tinnitus (ringing in the ear), and dizziness/loss of balance. As the tumor grows, it can interfere with the face sensation nerve (the trigeminal nerve), causing facial numbness. Vestibular schwannomas can also press on the facial nerve (for the muscles of the face) causing facial weakness or paralysis on the side of the tumor. If the tumor becomes large, it will eventually press against nearby brain structures, becoming life-threatening.

This thoroughly researched collection presents vital information from many authoritative sources: Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Centers for Disease Control (CDC), National Institutes of Health (NIH), and the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders (NIDCD). Contents include clinical and medical Information, with information on risk groups, signs, symptoms, testing, diagnosis, treatment, prevention, and clinical trials.

In addition to the comprehensive disease-specific coverage, as a bonus we have included an encyclopedic collection of general medical and health documents, with extensive material from the CDC, FDA, and NIH on hundreds of diseases. Since navigating the Internet to find additional non-governmental medical information can be confusing, we've also provided our exclusive "Guide to Leading Medical Websites" with updated links to 73 of the best sites for medical information! By using weblinks on the CD-ROM, you can quickly check for the latest clinical updates directly from the government.

This CD-ROM has over 30,000 pages reproduced using Adobe Acrobat PDF software and Reader software is included. Advanced search and indexing features are built into our reproduction, providing a complete full-text index. This enables the user to search all the files on the disk at one time for words or phrases using just one search command! The Acrobat cataloging technology adds enormous value and uncommon functionality to this impressive collection of government documents and material. There is no other reference that is as fast, convenient, comprehensive, and portable!

Our CD-ROMs are privately-compiled collections of official public domain U.S. government files and documents - they are not produced by the federal government. They are designed to provide a convenient user-friendly reference work, utilizing the benefits of the Acrobat format to uniformly present thousands of pages that can be rapidly reviewed or printed without untold hours of tedious searching and downloading. This book-on-a-disc makes a superb reference work and educational tool for patients and their families, physicians, and other medical professionals. (Information on this CD-ROM is not a substitute for professional medical advice; of course, readers are urged to consult with a professional health care provider for any suspected illness.) ... Book Description
With increasing numbers of reports on surgical and nonsurgical treatment of acoustic neuroma, standardization of reporting systems has become more and more important. For that purpose, the 11th Keio International Symposium for Life Sciences and Medicine, the Consensus Meeting on Systems for Reporting Results in Acoustic Neuroma, brought together researchers from Japan and other parts of the world. This volume is a compilation of papers from the symposium on standardization of evaluation and reporting systems for acoustic neuroma from such aspects as tumor size, facial nerve function, pre- and postoperative hearing, the effect of radiotherapy, and neurological symptoms. This unique book is a valuable reference for clinicians, researchers, and other professionals working in neurootology, neurosurgery, otolaryngology, audiology, and related fields. ... Read more

Book Description
Hardbound. This book is a detailed description of the approach to patients with acoustic neuromas, including diagnosis and the choice of conservative care, radiation or surgical treatment. While there is considerable emphasis on quality of life as well as the philosophy and results underlying all forms of intervention, the main thrust is the surgical anatomy and technique. The volume is based on the surgical techniques for total microsurgical removal of 600 acoustic neuromas. Multiple stereoscopic photographic pairs in color were taken through the microscope of each of the 600 cases, and 130 stereo pairs have been included to illustrate the various operative approaches and the anatomic variations, each with a rather detailed description. There are also 30 black and white non-stereo photographs of instruments, positioning and operating room arrangements, as well as 30 X-ray copies. The book is excellent documentation for the future, a highly value ... Read more
