Product Description
Living with AD/HD can be hectic, and parents of children with this disorder can be driven to distraction when even the simplest of tasks causes havoc. This book addresses the issues of organization and time management in relation to AD/HD, suggesting practical ways of organizing your child's day to day life that turn chaos into calm. Accommodating short attention spans and short fuses, the author shows how, by using the F.I.R.S.T method (Fun, Individualism, Rules, Simplicity and Time management), even the most hyperactive and easily distracted of children can be taught to make their bed, pack their school bag, and generally get organized! Cheryl Carter recognizes that children hate anything that is boring, and finds a fun way around even the most mundane of tasks. Her no-nonsense, step-by-step strategies, in combination with positive affirmations and realistic demands, will get AD/HD children organized, and from A to B without a hitch. This book is a must-have for any flagging parent struggling to structure their child's life (and indeed their own). It will also be of interest to family members, teachers, and anybody else close to a child with AD/HD. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars biased, stereotypical, and blaming
I found this book more preaching than beneficial. It blamed the parents, without consideration that ADD is a biological, chemical imbalance of the brain. It brings in co-dependency, like this is the cause of ADD, and then how to treat the co-dependency. It points fingers in a very stereotypical way, a lot of examples of the mother doing something wrong, and then one example of the father and he was underparenting. Way too much focus on changing the parental behavior/self and lacked changing the childs. It is a lot of fluff. The book does off a range of solutions, from nutrition to therapy.

5-0 out of 5 stars MORE than a cure:A new way to live.
Every parent of ADD/ADHD kids and every adult with it needs to read MOVING BEYOND ADD/ADHD.This book explains why drugs are not the answer, and offers a huge window of hope and enlightenment for conquering this problem, often with the help of therapy.Debroitner and Hart don't pull punches with vague or simplistic advice about deep breathing.Instead they provide a step-by-step guide that teaches both adults and children how to ground and center themselves -- which are just other words for paying attention and connecting with ourselves -- in all types of daily situations.

The book is an engaging and fun to read education in holistic healthcare:I learned just how much ADD/ADHD is a mind and body condition, and how being aware of auditory, visual, olfactory and more elements combine to attain achievement of sensory integration. It's all about "body ownership"-- without it we have difficulty (edgy, restless) experiencing the real world within and around us, and with it we have self-awareness and confidence. In the ADD/ADHD person, this leads to a calm and attentive center.

Powerful and intelligent, this material runs the gamut, from simple parental guidelines (how to handle temper tamtrums, let go of anger) and exercises (eye-focusing; direct communication examples, etc.), all the way up to the tougher challenge of reflecting on our own lives. For those up to the challenge, fear not:this has nothing whatsoever to do with blame and guilt, but everything to do with an opportunity to enrich our inner and outer lives. It's like the old airplane oxygen mask rule:we must make sure we're able to breathe so that we can help the kids breathe. The all-important bottom line here is that the road to overcoming ADD/ADHD is paved with hard work toward empowerment and self esteem, and, best of all, as many case examples in the book show, it's within our reach to do it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Essential for all Stakeholders!
I am personally appalled that the prevalent solution to A.D.D., A.D.H.D. in the U.S. is dependence on drugs for our children. That is why I am convinced that the suggestions offered in "Moving Beyond A.D.D., A.D.H.D." should be a first line of defense, not the last one.Debroiter and Hart offer practical, insightful techniques for grounding both children and adults who suffer from these deficits where wholeness is restored, and balance is self-regulated. For those who suffer from the disconnection that ensues from this disorder, holistic exercises and routines that help re-connect mind, body, and spirit must be accessed from within to be lasting. This is a "must read" for all stakeholders who love and work with children.

5-0 out of 5 stars Moving Beyond ADD/ADHD
Finally someone has the courage to say NO to drugs. This book shows you that there is life before taking drugs for this disorder. I commend the authors for doing an outstanding job of showing how anyone can overcome this setback in their life. On a scale of 1-5, I give this book a 10. Everyone should read this book to get a better insight to what this so called disorder can do to you or your family.

Moving Beyond ADD/ADHD is jam packed with practical holistic and healthy suggestions for dealing with the challenges of ADD/ADHD. It is easy to read with great step by step instructions on everything from understanding sensory issues to avoiding drugs to parenting techniques. It is written mindfully with compassion, caring and clarity. Excellent, sensical read. This author knows her stuff as she has experienced it in her own home.I read the book just to learn and wow did I learn.I have changed my own diet because of some of the quality information that's in here.I highly recommend this book to those who have to deal with these issues in there home.Be patient as you read this. She gives you a lot of good information and it can be overwhelming.Certainly a book for every household.

5-0 out of 5 stars It worked for my son
My son was on Ritalin for over three years. After about the 12th treatment by the NAET practitioner, he told us he didn't want to take the ritalin any more.He just graduated from High School with honors, sans ritalin.

This book was a great help in convincing his mother to allow him to be treated. For my story, see my review under Say Goodbye to Illness.

NAET works.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book For Your ADD Child!
This is a great book to help children with ADD, ADHD, dyslexia, learning disabilities, autism, etc. I have seen some dramatic changes happen in children with these disorders in Dr. Devi's office. These NAET treatments work well on these children.Because they all have the same common problem: ALLERGIES.

This book gives good description about the signs and symptoms of ADD and ADHD. According to Dr. Devi, the cause of ADD and ADHD disorder is "ALLERGIES."There are many self-help tips given in this book for the parents to help their children. Overall this is a very useful book for the parents. I highly recommend this book if you have a child with ADD or ADHD.

5-0 out of 5 stars Say Good-Bye To ADD And ADHD
The book hits the problem on the head, conventional thinking on this suject has been "dope'm and forget about it".
Dr. Devi as she is called should get a nobel prize for her work in this field and on allergies.

5-0 out of 5 stars My Child's Freedom From ADD Through NAET
I watched Katie Couric today, January 16, 2001, on NBC at 8:00 am newstalkng about ADD and ADHD. It broght a shadow of sadness in mewhen I saw some of those children under Ritalin going through unlimited struggle to lead a normal life and I decided to write this article. Most people do not know that their children suffer from ADD due to food and environmental allergies. If they stayed away from allergens, they may not have to be depending on Ritalin to live.
A friend gave me this book "SAy Goodbye To ADD and ADHD" by Dr. Devi S. Nambudripad. I stayed whole night and read the book. Tears began rolling down my cheeks as I was getting to the end of the book. After all, there is cure for my child's problem! Immediately I made an appointment for my child. Yes, he took almost two years' of NAET. But he is absolutely free of ADD today. Thank You Dr. Devi, for creating NAET. We owe our lives to you. This book will show the reader to make your or your child's journey easy if you suffer from ADD or ADHD. I like to informparents of other children with ADHD that it is worth reading this book if you have someone woith ADD. Whenever I see articles and negatives comments writtenonADD/ADHD saying that it is an incurable disorder and/ or one has to be on medication forever, etc,my heart hurts. When I see many ADD children suffer from the pangs of this illness, and when they end up being ADD adults and lead miserable lives as adults (I know many of them in my circle: school, college, friends, etc.), I feel the urge to shout out to them that "you don't have to live with ADD or ADHD. You have a way out within your reach. If there is a need, there is a way. It is true. Just read this book. Your life will change. You need to get NAET treatments and you won't be the same again."NAET has transformed my child into a normal human being. I am sure if these parents found NAET, many of their children could become normal too. Children are our future. If we could help our children get healthy, we would have a healthy future.

The number of children being diagnosed with ADD/ADHD has skyrocketed, along with prescriptions for Ritalin and other powerful amphetamine drugs to treat these problem children. This pharmaceutical answer to a behavioral disorder is one of the most controversial subjects in parenting today, and Dr. David Stein offers parents a safe, foolproof alternative.Challenging the disease theories of ADD/ADHD, Stein discusses the conditions in modern society and the American family that cause so many children to hate schoolwork and behave disrespectfully to all authority figures.Rejecting the pill solution, he presents a truly effective parent training program called the Caregivers' Skills Program that helps children learn appropriate behavioral and cognitive skills permanently, without drug therapy.Parents are trained to teach their children to love reading and learning, and to respect authority at home and at school.Stein presents case studies from his own highly successful practice that demonstrate the remarkably effective CSP that can help parents, educators, physicians, and therapists treat today's problem children. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Finally, a solution!
Finally, a solution!
As a practicing psychologist for 30 years, I have read this book and recognized that this book is an anser to my prayers.Especially during the last few years, where my practice is concentrated in treating children and teenagers, I was feeling that the increasing diagnosis of ADHD is not really understood.Sometimes therapy can help I found out, but many times the pressure of school and parents for a solution for this problem made me refer the patient to a psychiatrist for medication. Even then, the problem did not go away, it only was covered up.This means that some children will learn to control the symptoms themselves, some will not.
Recently it has become commonplace to request Social Security disability payments for children with this condition, which I could never understand.A child that is misbehaving, no matter for what reason, is declared "disabled" and his parents are supported with my tax money?
There was one solution for ADHD and similar problems provided by the Drake Institute in Irvine CA, they could help 80% of patient in short time using biofeedback to change the brain wave pattern. This solution is very expensive and no insurance pays for it, so most of my families could not afford it.Private and public insurances rather pay for many years of psychiatric medication, than for a successful treatment in a few months.
I have used behavioral intervention before with mixed success. Then I found this book and have since read it and am now teaching it in my practice.
This book, not only uses a behavioral approach, but has refined the approach to make it work most of the time. With proper guidance most parents can implement this program called Caretaker Skills Program (CSP) and can change an ADHD child in a few weeks into a well functioning child without any "Mental Illness" or "Disability." Consequently David B. Stein, Ph. D., is proposing to change the name of the diagnosis from ADHD (Attention Deficit and Hyperactive Disorder) to IA/HM (Inattentive and Highly Misbehaving). This places this disorder in the same category as the other childhood problems like "Oppositional Defiant Disorder", and other behavioral disorder. Nobody would attempt to call these disorders disabilities, deserving public support.

He points out that no etiology or physical difference has every been found for this and other behavioral disorders, even the previously assumed Minimal Brain Dysfunction could not be proven and has been abolished as a diagnostic label.

David B Stein lists 17 misbehaviors and groups them as (1) Active Manipulations, (2) Verbal Manipulations, (3) Inattentive Behaviors and other (4) Common Misbehaviors. When parents of ADHD patients are given this list, they are surprised, because this list describes their child behavior exactly and they check all or most of these behaviors.Stein gives simple, clear and detailed instruction how to implement the program and describes how to replace punishment with discipline, how to force the child to think and that manipulation and "I don't know" does not work in this program. It seems almost every child can learn that and behave properly.

I have just started to apply this approach in my practice and have no statistical valuable results, but this alternative to medication is certainly worthwhile to try for every professional and parent. If you have an ADHD child in your family or your practice, this book is a must.

1-0 out of 5 stars This book made me feel sick.
This book rejects the ADD/ADHD diagnosis in favor of a diagnosis of "highly misbehaving"and basically advocates behavior modification through punishment. This is essentially what my brother's childhood was like, and it didn't help one bit. As an adult, he's even more of a mess than he was as a child.

I'm willing to believe that there are effective non-drug treatments for children with ADD/ADHD. Lots of exercise and time in nature seems to help a lot. Isolation and spanking, which is what this book advocates, don't.

5-0 out of 5 stars Life altering
Every parent should read this book. The author points out how societal changes have impacted our kids, i.e. TV, working moms and dads.We all need to reflect on these issues and how they affect our kids.I took my daughter off her medication, turned off the TV on school nights, and used his discipline method. She's doing fine in school and is listening much better.

5-0 out of 5 stars life changing
This book changed our family. If you're willing to work hard, change as a parent, and truly see the changes you want in your family, this is the book for you. It's extremely practical and easy to use.

5-0 out of 5 stars Drug Free Behavior Modification Works!!!!!!
What an amazing book!!!!!!!!!!!!! My life and my child's behavior has changed so dramatically!! The book states that you will see results in 2 weeks, we saw results in one!!! It is hard work to stick with this program but if you do the results are amazing!!! There is so much less yelling and nagging and reminding in our home. There is actually peace. Once I did the research about the commonly used ADHD drugs and there potential side effects I was mortified and resolved to find a drug free way to help my four year old before she starts kindergarten this fall. Things are not perfect but there is such a dramatic change that even her preschool teachers are asking me what I did to bring about this change. DO THE RESEARCH ABOUT DRUGS!!!!!!!!! IN MY OPINION THEY SHOULD BE USED ONLY IN THE MOST EXTREME OF CIRCUMSTANCES! Try this first. If you can stick with it it works. Sometimes its hard. I even had to put up a "How to to discipline my daughter" reminder on the refridgertor to remind me not to go back to the old ways. But if I stick to it, it really works. To be honest I did not really enjoy my child very much before, She was so hyper and unfocused and didnt seem to listen to anything anyone said. We had tried everything. I read several other books, gave her time outs, took toys and privaledges away, sent her to bed early and about everything else I could think of and it never phased her. I almost gave up and figured and ADHD child really couldnt control herself and this was just the way things were going to be. I had nightmares of her entering kindergarten and the teachers calling every day to complain about what a disruptive and uncontrollable child she was. Now we speak. Her self confidence has increased and she is actually cute again. She is proud of herself and her behavior. Thank you to the author for literally changing my and her life. I STRONGLY URGE ALL PARENTS TO GIVE IT A TRY!!!! WHAT HAVE YOU GOT TO LOSE? IF YOU WERE LIKE ME YOU TRIED EVERYTING ELSE ALREADY. ... Read more

Product Description

Blake Taylor's memoir, written when he was 17, offers, for the first time, a young person's account of what it's like to live and grow up with this common condition. Join Blake as he foils bullies, confronts unfair teachers, struggles with distraction and disorganization on exams, and goes sailing out-of-bounds and ends up with a boatload of spiders. It will be an inspiration and companion to the millions of others like him who must find a way to thrive with a different perspective than many of us.

The book features an introduction by psychologist Lara Honos-Webb, author of The Gift of ADHD, and a leading advocate for kids with ADHD.

Blake's mother first suspected he had ADHD when he, at only three years of age, tried to push his infant sister in her carrier off the kitchen table. As time went by, Blake developed a reputation for being hyperactive and impulsive. He launched rockets (accidentally) into neighbor's swimming pools and set off alarms in museums. Blake was diagnosed formally with ADHD when he was five years old. In this book, he tells about the next twelve years as he learns to live with both the good and bad sides of life with ADHD.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must read for anyone dealing with ADHD
My son has ADHD and I have been searching for books to read so that I may do everything that I can to help him become a sucessful adult. I have not read a book so inspirational and moving in years! I smiled, laughed and even cried throughout this book as it is almost a mirror of my son. Blake could have not written a better book that made me able to see things from my son's perspective. Not only does the author give his personal stories, but ways of how he tried to make the different issues he faced and symptoms better. I now have some great suggestions to give my son for some the struggles. When he is a little older and needs some extra inspiration, I will be giving this book to him to read. To know that Blake went on to college and was cabable of writing such an wonderful book, makes me now realize more than ever that my son is going to be okay.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Must Read!
As a female with ADHD, I have focused my research on gender differences in the disorder. I liked Blake's practical suggestions. Actually reading about someone going through it, I realized that some of the little things I didn't like about myself were actually symptoms that you don't usually read about in general descriptions of ADHD. I didn't realize I had tics until he described his and I did some more research on it, and discovered that some of the embarrassing things I do aren't really my fault. Even though I wasn't even diagnosed until I was 24 (I'm now 26), I find so much more confidence in myself knowing that some of the problems I faced throughout high school and college weren't just because I was inferior or defective. I found his nuanced account of what life is like for him very helpful.

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect book for a child or adult living with adhd
I'm reviewing this for the individual actually living with add or adhd. I can't and won't speak to what a person who does not have this "disorder" might take from it.
This is a short and brilliant little book, in which a young man who has yet to be jaded by the adult world and has been incredibly well-supported by his family explains, honestly and with a good degree of insight, how his life experiences have been impacted by having adhd. This book was more or less what I was looking for and something I simply haven't been able to find in the clinical literature. If you look up a definition of adhd, you get a list of symptoms that you are somehow supposed to match your or another's behavior to. Over time I've realized that not only are those lists not terribly useful but they frequently are completely useless and leave a great deal of uncertainty about what is adhd and what is behavior that is separate from that and it's really sort of impossible to diagnose from these lists (or by visiting so-called "professionals" - but that is a different issue). In order to understand a disorder, you really have to hear stories from people who have lived with it. Those are the symptoms you have to look for.
The other problem with books by and assistance from people who are not intimately familiar with a disorder is that they generally contain absolutely useless advice. An example would be orderliness. It's good and well to say, you need to organize yourself. But when you present something in a vacuum like that, it induces stress and intimates a negative trait on the listener's part - as though being "organized" in a very traditional way is the only correct way to do things and anything other than that is incorrect. And a number of people (maybe most? I don't honestly know) actually believe this to be true. Those of us who operate with a lack of obvious organization (from the perspective of an external party) know that our systems generally work well, oftentimes much better than what appear to us to be pathologically "organized" systems. But the point is that you know what works best for you. When someone else has already dealt with your underlying issues, the advice they give based on their experience is actually useful. The author offers examples of how he adapted his world to certain types of organization, rejected others, all the time knowing that he would have to see for himself what worked. Throughout the book he does this. The end is particularly insightful, speaking to the positive and unique abilities of those with adhd in the form of a short list. And what's nice about that is that it underlines that while adhd may represent a different way of being or processing information or interacting with the world, it doesn't mean that it is an incorrect way or really represents a disorder. It just means that to do what you want to in this world, you may need to adapt your behavior to those who have less creativity and insight.
And yes, he does say medication helped him immensely. I don't know of anyone with adhd it has not helped and I see no reason for people not to do things that help them and do not hurt others and so I think it's a very responsible and appropriate statement for the author to repeat. he's explaining what works for him.

4-0 out of 5 stars Sometimes a teen can only learn the hard way.
Decades ago, ADHD was not understood, and kids with the disorder were treated as "bad kids". In recent years, kids with ADHD have received more "reasonable accommodations". When such a boy/girl does something wrong, there's a debate on whether or not to penalize the child. But whether you take away the TV, take away the Nintendo, or make the kid clean up the mess, one question remains; what happens to the kid when he/she is 20 years old? Your boss at work will not care if you have ADHD, nor will a Judge and Jury. There's no such thing as the ADHD defense.

Blake's story shows how kids with ADHD may have no choice but to learn the hard way. Take for instance the part where he's at a sailing club and breaks a safety rule. He ends up needing to be rescued, and gets banned from the premises. He can't use ADHD as an excuse now, because unlike a teacher in a classroom, the owner doesn't have to make any accommodations for ADHD.

Blake ends up learning the hard way, when he starts a fire on the kitchen table and his parents refuse to let him learn to drive.

5-0 out of 5 stars If you or your child have a.d.d., READ THIS!!!
Whether you have a child who is ADD/ADHD -- or YOU are ADD/ADHD -- please read this book.It is such a short-read, but makes such an impact on your heart & mind.Something that really stuck with me through this book, was how the author talks about how he is sudden-outbursts of ticks on a regular basis, and now it really effected his life...even effected his chances of getting into a very-strict private school.
It is SO true--so much is relatable for ANYONE with add/adhd--but ESPECIALLY kids.I was 17 when I read this book, and it made me feel sooo sooo soo very happy and content to realize this boy went through many similar things as i did throughout my public-school career, and it gave me much peace inside from reading his lovely tips/inspirational writing/and good recommended resources.
I still think of this book a LOT, from time to time.And..it's such a darn short read.Give it a chance. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Cute photos, but not entirely accurate on ADHD
The photos are cute and the overall message of this book is a good one. However, I did not feel that it was completely on target with its description of ADHD symptoms as I understand them.I bought this book because of the good reviews I read. I'm not sure now what I will do with it. I would not recommend this book to ADHD parents, nor can I see it being useful as a tool for sharing with an ADHD child (as I read in some reviews). But if you are a dog lover and like cute photographs, you may enjoy this book for those qualities.

I do give this book 5 stars simply because you should read it.Quite honestly it brought up life changing concepts.I never realized that my disorganized mind could be ADD.I wish I had this years ago.Applying the concepts saved my job and changed my life. That said, I think the book tends to go on and on with examples when the point has already been made. This is why my reviews says..just not awesome.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not Worth the Money!
ADD and Your Money: A Guide to Personal Finance for Adults With Attention Deficit Disorder

I was quite disappointed in this book. It promised new approaches and ideas on money management for ADD sufferers, but instead it gave a rehashing of basic money management (i.e. the benefits of creating a budget, etc.)One area that it seemed to address well was how to handle money in a relationship with someone who has ADD...but that's at best only a small portion of what this book is being offered as. I also felt that the general tone of this book was condescending. People with ADD are typically above the curve on intelligence, but this book came off as if it was talking to a population that needed everything spoon-fed to them.

5-0 out of 5 stars A top pick for any library where ADD patrons seek keys to everyday living
ADD and Your Money could also have been reviewed in our 'Health' section for its tips relating to ADD management, but is considered here because the self-help focus is on money management, not health. It takes ADD tendencies and links them to financial pitfalls directly related to ADD symptoms, offering a system for keeping track of bills, creating budgets, and other challenges the ADD personality finds particularly difficult. It's a top pick for any library where ADD patrons seek keys to everyday living.

5-0 out of 5 stars great book
this is a great book with many helpful tips on managing to manage your money, especially if you have difficulty focusing or keeping track of where it goes.

5-0 out of 5 stars Helpful insight to helping me to manage my money with ADD.
I have purchased this book ADD and Your Money after listening to a teleconference online with Dr. Stephanie Sarkis through an ADD support group that I participate with. The materials discussed during the conference was very informative and nailed all the problems I have with managing money.

I found the book to be useful and simplistic to the point that I didn't feel information overload when reading it.Each chapter discussed was straight forward and to the point of how to see things and what I need to do to get myself on track financially. The book doesn't take long to read which is a plus for me with my busy lifestyle.I also appreciate this book that its helped with my guilt that I can learn how to manage my money.

I would also suggest to anyone that has adult ADD/ADHD and has difficulty managing money to take the course Financial Peace with Dave Ramsey. In conjunction with this course and Dr. Sarkis book I feel I'm on the right track.Cut up all credit cards and use cash.Don't use debit cards unless its an emergency. If our previous generations could survive without them so we can we.

5-0 out of 5 stars A short, concise set of strategies for ADD adults.
This short, easy to read book should be very useful for those who have ADD.ADDers probably don't have a good attention span but can focus on something that interests them. The book is set out with this in mind there are many tips and strategies as well as some cognitive behaviour self therapy tips. The whole self diagnosis section takes only a few pages. Many main points are in bold type throughout the book and it is very clearly structured. One good diagnostic point mentioned was the overactive, racing mind which tends to produce nagging, negative thoughts. The combating insomnia strategies were also interesting.I don't think I have seen these in other ADD books and articles.
This seems to be the first book of its type written for those with ADD who need to help themselves, rather than for those interested in the theory and psychology of the disorder.
I changed the rating from 4 to 5 after reviewing the intended target for the book.

1-0 out of 5 stars Dissapointment
I dont have ADHD but my BF does. This is the second book I've read on ADHD and I found it extremely dissapointing. I understand the need to focus on the positive and highlight the strenghts, but to disregard the negative aspects of ADHD or to deem them less important than the postive ones, is doing a great injustice not just to the individual with ADHD but to everyone associated with them. I completely disagreed with the author in many levels. When providing examples about being tardy and how the person should focus on being creative instead of trying to get to work on time, or how being organized is not nearly as important - does not do any justice to the ADHD person or those around them. Yes, it is always important to focus on the strenght and build up on the good qualities, but you cannot undermine the negative aspects of ADHD. The author also focuses on the individual and makes it seem like their partner or friends needs to accept them for who they are (unorganized, tardy etc). That part completely infuriates me. There is nothing wrong with having ADHD but nothing good can come out of ignoring the difficulties it has on day to day living, not just for the person for those who are around him. Similarly, nothing great will come out of it by glorifying the positives and the "gift" and making the negative aspects seem really unimportant. The postive traits are ofcourse very great. Its the negative ones that effect people in a negative way and SHOULD be emphasized and SHOULD be dealt with. If you are looking for insight, esp if your partner has ADHD, best bet would be to read "Is it You, Me, or Adult ADD". Very insightful!

3-0 out of 5 stars A few great insights, lots of filler.
I was hesitant to buy this book, because it contained the word "Maverick" in the title (and my inner BS meter went off). I was persuaded by the positive reviews however, and one click purchasing all happens so fast...

First: This book is extremely short. It makes use of large font, wide margins, and wide spacing to fill more pages than it should. Additionally, it is padded with a lot of filler to stretch what would be an excellent booklet to a full book.

Second: If you have ADHD- you will probably find several passages in this book that make your heart race- she nails several common experiences and feelings on the head- and it is rewarding to see others have similar challenges.

Third: He whole premise is to be a "Maverick," and I get that she's trying to put positive light on ADHD and encourage people to use it to their advantage instead of seeing it as a handicap- but many of her examples of success are people who couldn't make it in the "real world" and instead became ADHD coaches or pursued some other non-traditional employment. The author herself couldn't hack it at her job and got fired, then became an ADHD coach. For the majority of us that isn't a real solution- we have to maintain real jobs. If the author couldn't find a way to succeed in the 9-5, what effective advice can she offer us?

Finally: Too much of this book is dedicated to fluffery. If you want a fast and light read, with a few good insights- perhaps this book is for you. If you are looking for specific concrete advice and strategies for success, or a deeper understanding of ADHD, keep looking. I would recommend the (extremely lengthy and overly thorough): More Attention, Less Deficit: Success Strategies for Adults with ADHD.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must-read
I'll be to the point: I am a changed person because I read that book.

If you have ADD, you must read this book. It's not your psychiatrist talkingor your doctor, it's someone who is ADD and tells straight to your face what is happening to you.

I have been telling myself little white lies for a long time and I was thrilled to learn that others did too.At some point, don't be surprised if you find yourself wondering if you are related to Ms Korestky because of the similarities between her life and yours.

It took me less than 48hrs to read and it moved my life forward for the next 48 years.Go ahead, buy it, read it, live it!

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the few AD/HD books I made it all the way through!
Though not particularly in-depth, this book was straight-forward, no BS, and cuts to the chase. I felt it had very helpful advice and didn't just repeat the same old same old I've read in so many AD/HD self-help books. I particularly enjoyed the author's writing style and felt much like she was talking to me as a friend rather than talking down to me. There wasn't anything particularly new or groundbreaking, but the suggestions were synthesized in such a way as to feel like a real call to action, not just a bunch of fluff I'll never use. One of my favorite AD/HD books. ... Read more

The chapters of the book are organized by strengths that can be developed in a child. There is a short discussion of the importance of each strength, and then the book offers simple activities that parents do with their child-often in just a few minutes-to help develop them. Throughout the book strikes a positive note, stressing things that parents can do themselves to encourage and support their child rather than things they should discourage or avoid. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Phenomenal Book by a Phenomenal Writer
I bought this book after seeing Dr. Honos-Webb speak on a different topic (parenting). She spoke with such wisdom and insight, and addressed some of the most important questions and fears regarding parenting today -- and she did it in such a simple way. I am a lifelong lover of learning and I can honestly say that I have never seen a speaker come at a topic so directly yet so intimately. It was a life-changing talk.

It made me want to hear more of Honos-Webb's take on the world - so much more that I went home and ordered all of her books (which is a lot to say for a single mother watching every dime!): The Gift of Adult ADD: How to Transform Your Challenges & Build on Your Strengths, The Gift Of ADHD: How To Transform Your Child's Problems Into Strengths, Listening to Depression: How Understanding Your Pain Can Heal Your Life as well as this one.

Her books are more than I had hoped for. Honos-Webb approaches depression, ADD and ADHD in a uniquely positive way. There are new insights and food for thought on every page. She is also a wonderful writer. I am a writer and an editor myself and I was continually impressed with not only the beauty of the ideas she expresses but the beauty of her words as well.

Honos-Webb sheds extraordinary light on these topics. Her books should be required reading for everyone who cares about the human mind.

PS And if you ever get a chance to see her speak, seize the opportunity. This woman should have her own TV show! (Could she be the next Oprah????? We can only hope.)

5-0 out of 5 stars Very helpful and insightful
This book was a surprise. I hadn't read the one that came before it "the gift of ADHD" but I will now. The author gently encourages compassion and understanding of these difficult to raise children. Many of the "games" are informal ways to link with your kid by working their strengths. The first part of the book suggests you make a list of what is right with your kid. When I did this I realized just how fascinating he really is. I am starting to turn around my focus from problem oriented to strength oriented. Quite a change.
The activities are not for just one age group. The author discusses one and suggests adaptations for different ages. Also suggests variations depending on your child's interests. The best part is the author's understanding the difficulties of raising an ADHD kid, the problems parents encounter and the potential for turning things around to benefit your kid. It is easy to read clear and insightful. It is organized in a way so you can pick one aspect and work on those activities. You don't have to read cover to cover to start using the techniques.
I recommend this book.

Product Description
The author describes the spectrum of ADHD, the co-occurring symptoms, and common difficulties that parents face. The rest of the book focuses on solutions, based around four rules. Rule number one is keeping it positive: punishments can change behavior, but only positive approaches can improve attitude. Rule number two is keeping it calm: it's difficult thinking clearly enough to solve problems logically if you are feeling overwhelmed. Rule number three is keeping it organized: this rule relates particularly to the child's school life. Rule number four is to keep doing rules one to three. Finally, Dr. Kutscher discusses the role of medication for treating ADHD. Realistic and optimistic, this book is the ideal source ... Read more

I even cry when a I find out so many things my son was doing and I could not help with my ignorance.Amazon is my favorite place to buy everything I need.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource
This book is an excellent resource for parents and teachers. As a special educator and parent of a young adult with ADD, I was thrilled to have so many feelings validated in this book and to get some helpful advice. The book is very easy to read. I ask all my inclusion and collaborative reg. ed. teachers to read at least the 1st chapter when we have mutual students. That usually peaks their interest to read the rest because they are able to better understand the challenges faced by those with ADHD/ADD. Thank you Dr. Kutcher.

5-0 out of 5 stars A very positive and empathic approach
I have a 8 years old son who is ADHD. Our life with him is sometimes very stressful and this book has provided me with an optimistic and positive insight about what ADHD is. I have read some other books but they are more "tough" on the topic. I just feel stonger on how to understand my kid and how to be empathic with his situation. The author does not put anything new about the subject but the way that his book is written is wonderful. It is optimistic and geared to succeed. Good luck on rising your ADHDers and let's try to keep it positive.

4-0 out of 5 stars A good summation
Although the information is basic common sense, it does help to have it spelled out in an organized matter with issues and solutions. Was able to highlight topical info to discuss with someone with a short attention span! Bite sizes.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great read for anyone with ADHD
I found this book chock full of great strategies and advice for ADHD and school. The author has put his heart into this.I'm the mother of two teens with ADHD; I've read a ton of books on the subject but find this the most useful. This will really speak to you and give you strategies before problems pop up!

5-0 out of 5 stars The BEST ADD Book on the market
I was diagnosed with ADD late in high school and have been having one of the most difficult years of my life in my senior year of college. I recently began seeing a "ADD Counselor" at the health center to try and make the best of the semester but my workload has really gotten the best of me. I am pursuing a degree in Biomedical Engineering and am almost at the end of my rope! I have another grueling 2 years left of undergrad and my ability to see the light at the end of the tunnel has seriously diminished in the past few months.

I miraculously found the time to flip through this book at the University Bookstore for a split second before classes and nearly cried when I read through some of the things Michael Sandler wrote. I have read many, many books about coping with ADD and college/life/relationships etc. but I have never been so profoundly impacted by a ADD "self help" book. Mr Sandler's personal approach is a breath of fresh air in comparison to other aids I have tried. With every turn of the page, I kept thinking everything he was saying was exactly how I felt.
This is a guide to help us "ADDers" find the most effective approach to handling, not only academic life, but also personal relationships, finances, and emotional well being.

If you are a Teacher (HS or University level), seriously consider reading this in order to better understand some of the difficulties that about 10% of your students learn to make the most of.

If you are looking into this book for someone else, and ESPECIALLY if you are a parent of a student with ADD/ADHD do not hesitate to read this book. I bought the copy I was looking through and sent another to my parents.

If you yourself have ADD, just read 3 pages from any section and see what you think.

Bottom Line: This is a self help book from someone who has actually "been there done that". These are invaluable words of wisdom and ENCOURAGEMENT, and solid advice from someone who has traveled this bumpy road before.

BEST OF LUCK!

4-0 out of 5 stars Great overall information, covers the student as a whole.
As a high school guidance counselor, I would definitely recommend this audio book to my ADD/ADHD students. The main reason I did not give it 5 stars was because of the repetitious music in between chapters.I found it extremely annoying to listen to over and over again! However, this audiobook offers a lot of good insight to students who struggle, and even adults who struggle in the workplace (although it is definitely geared towards high school kids who are off to a traditional 4-year college.I liked that it focused on the whole student, not just the academics. It covers areas such as exercise, diet, time management, and social aspects.
One thing I can recommend to those reading or listening to this book is as a high school sophomore or junior, ask your counselor about applying for extended time before you take SAT's or even PSAT's.This can help a great deal, since the test is timed, and most students end up running out of time.
I did not agree with the author's opinion that students who truly struggle with the daily challenges of ADD should sign up for AP courses in high school. Most (not all, but most) of my students with ADD would not be able to handle the challenges of taking on an AP course, especially since it requires a great deal of independent work and high organizational skills.I do believe that ALL students should sign up for the most challenging classes they can possibly handle in high school, and honors courses are great if appropriate. You can still get into some great colleges if you do not have "AP" written on your transcript. For some students, AP's are just not realistic. But that's ok.
Helpful information overall.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good, practical, positive advice

1-0 out of 5 stars Hidden bias
Although this book describes itself as an objective resource that provides "clear answers and accurate information", in my opinion, that is a complete misrepresentation. It is actually strongly biased against medication and even ADD/ADHD diagnoses. I don't mind the idea of reading books that are both pro- and anti-medication to get a broad perspective, but this book should not advertise itself as a "one-stop" guide when it only presents one point of view. First it spends one hundred pages trying to convince you that your child may perhaps have lead poisoning, food allergies, or may just be "creative" -- and while these are certainly good things to check out, the book description does not accurately describe how much time is spent on these alternative explanations. There are only a few pages on stimulant medications, most of which is spent heavily criticizing them as pushed by drug companies / horrible side effects / leading to drug abuse, etc. As a parent considering medication, I really needed more than just this brief, biased glimpse at the subject. The "Fact!" sections are a complete joke, in which the author refers to a mysterious "study" which supports her argument, but fails to cite the study or even provide the names of the researchers so you can read it for yourself. I don't understand how this could pass through even the most relaxed editing process to get published. The last hundred pages is devoted to describing how bad parenting is probably responsible for most of the rampant misdiagnosing of ADD/ADHD. Here's a quote from p.125 of the book that pretty much sums up the author's point of view: "Properly used, many over-the-counter treatments produce fewer debilitating side effects than prescription medications. But remember that you are still sending the same wrong-headed, very dangerous message to your child: pills cure problems. Every child (and every adult!) becomes restless and inattentive when bored. It is normal to be upset over problems and to rail at being confined and controlled. The best non-prescription treatments are parenting classes and family counseling. So sign up!" I highly doubt Dr. Sonnes has parented an ADD/ADHD child. To suggest that such children are perfectly normal and just need better parenting is outright insulting and insensitive. I highly recommend the books by Dr. Hallowell instead. He had ADD himself and has parented ADD children, and in addition is a medical doctor, but is not as biased toward medication as you might expect. He still recommends plenty of alternative approaches, but at least he properly backs up all his assertions with real information.

2-0 out of 5 stars Biased
I have read the majority of this particular book, and it is definitely biased against medication use in children. The author does provide some useful alternatives for managing symptoms; however, I am concerned about the multiple opinions in the book that are presented as 'facts.'I have gleaned some useful information from this book, but have decided that I need to purchase an additional, more objective resource.

1-0 out of 5 stars I'm frankly offended by much of this book
As a person with ADHD, and the mother of a child with ADHD, I agree with some other reviewers that this book was biased and, in some cases, completely misleading. My daughter suffered (and I mean really suffered) with ADHD symptoms for 3 years before we finally turned to medication. My daughter's wonderful doctors (including her pediatrician, her therapist, and a child psychiatrist) all wanted to try a variety of techniques and treatments and never even suggested medication until it became quite clear that her situation was deteriorating and she had reached the point where she could not function on any reasonable level at school. We used behavior modification techniques, which worked slightly, until they didn't work anymore at all.We tried dietary changes, which never made even the smallest difference. We tried vitamin, omega-3, and other types of supplements, which made no difference at all. My daughter has always had plenty of activity and exercise, and has always slept well, so lack of physical activity and/or sleep was not an issue.I even took her to a neurologist for participation in a sleep study to make sure she was achieving deep sleep, in case that was a contributing factor. Some of these things were recommended by the doctors, and some things were based upon my own research into possible treatments. In desperation (after my daughter's ability to control herself and complete ANY work at school completely collapsed), we finally tried medication, and it quite frankly changed my daughter's life. I completely believe that way too many children are misdiagnosed and medicated, or even properly diagnosed but prematurely medicated; however, that does not mean that there are not people who benefit from, and truly require, medication.I have never needed, and do not take, medication for my ADHD as I am able to cope without it.Hopefully, as my daughter ages, she will develop techniques to do the same. However, she is not currently in that place.Despite a summary on the back cover that indicates the author will "help you weigh the pros and cons of medication," the section containing the "pros" apparently escaped me.The author actually states at one point that the vast majority of ADHD cases are diet-related, and says has been proven through research; however, I have read pages upon pages of research results into this subject, and I didn't find this to be the case at all.As with all research topics, results vary, and not all studies use sound research techniques or "good science."That said, I found plenty of data indicating that while some children's symptoms are diet-related, this is far from the majority (perhaps those children were suffering from the affects of a food allergy, not "real" ADHD at all). Now, I admit I became so disgusted I did not finish this book, so perhaps the author's tune changes later on; however, judging by some other reviews I've seen, this does not seem to be the case.I really didn't find any helpful information in this book.If it helps other people, than I'm happy and grateful for them. But people need to beware of the serious bias against what I've seen with my own eyes has worked in my family.

5-0 out of 5 stars Not Just for Parents
The Everything Parent's Guide To Children With ADD/ADHD: A Reassuring Guide To Getting The Right Diagnosis, Understanding Treatments, And Helping Your Child Focus (Everything: Parenting and Family)
Although this book is primarily for parents of children diagnosed with ADD/ADHD, it is also helpful for spouses of adults with ADD/ADHD.I have found the information to be valuable all the way around and this book has a permanent place on my bookshelf.

1-0 out of 5 stars Biased against medication
I purchased this book because I found "The Everything Parent's Guide to Children with Dyslexia" very useful and unbiased. However, this book was written by a different author and clearly biased against medication.I agree that medicating children should be a last resort, however, when I read on page 141 that this author says that "Ritalin has been called 'a chemical lobotomy' because the results are similar" to surgical lobotomy,I lost faith in her objectivity. If you want a book to support your decision to not medicate, this book is for you.If you want an objective analysis of the alternatives, go somewhere else. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Positive Experience
I went through the BIT treatment in 2005 and was happy with the results. My reading comprehension is improved, I no longer have to read things 3 or 4 times to understand what I am reading, my memorization skills have improved which has been helpful for test taking. It has been subtle changes for me and if I wasnt in grad school I may not have noticed the improvements, but since I am applying myself academically it has been a great help.

1-0 out of 5 stars My experience with the technique
I experienced the method from the author. It was more like laying on of hands than acupressure. The research she did was on five subjects and there were no long-term outcome data. The study's results may be from inducing relaxation because they are immediately after a session. She also claimed to treat me for allergies, but I noticed no difference. Most of the sessions involved listening to her complaints about other's personalities. The theory of the method is that she is working with energy. She expressed misunderstandings about psychology. ... Read more
