5-0 out of 5 stars It worked for my son
My son was on Ritalin for over three years. After about the 12th treatment by the NAET practitioner, he told us he didn't want to take the ritalin any more.He just graduated from High School with honors, sans ritalin.

This book was a great help in convincing his mother to allow him to be treated. For my story, see my review under Say Goodbye to Illness.

NAET works.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book For Your ADD Child!
This is a great book to help children with ADD, ADHD, dyslexia, learning disabilities, autism, etc. I have seen some dramatic changes happen in children with these disorders in Dr. Devi's office. These NAET treatments work well on these children.Because they all have the same common problem: ALLERGIES.

This book gives good description about the signs and symptoms of ADD and ADHD. According to Dr. Devi, the cause of ADD and ADHD disorder is "ALLERGIES."There are many self-help tips given in this book for the parents to help their children. Overall this is a very useful book for the parents. I highly recommend this book if you have a child with ADD or ADHD.

5-0 out of 5 stars Say Good-Bye To ADD And ADHD
The book hits the problem on the head, conventional thinking on this suject has been "dope'm and forget about it".
Dr. Devi as she is called should get a nobel prize for her work in this field and on allergies.

5-0 out of 5 stars My Child's Freedom From ADD Through NAET
I watched Katie Couric today, January 16, 2001, on NBC at 8:00 am newstalkng about ADD and ADHD. It broght a shadow of sadness in mewhen I saw some of those children under Ritalin going through unlimited struggle to lead a normal life and I decided to write this article. Most people do not know that their children suffer from ADD due to food and environmental allergies. If they stayed away from allergens, they may not have to be depending on Ritalin to live.
A friend gave me this book "SAy Goodbye To ADD and ADHD" by Dr. Devi S. Nambudripad. I stayed whole night and read the book. Tears began rolling down my cheeks as I was getting to the end of the book. After all, there is cure for my child's problem! Immediately I made an appointment for my child. Yes, he took almost two years' of NAET. But he is absolutely free of ADD today. Thank You Dr. Devi, for creating NAET. We owe our lives to you. This book will show the reader to make your or your child's journey easy if you suffer from ADD or ADHD. I like to informparents of other children with ADHD that it is worth reading this book if you have someone woith ADD. Whenever I see articles and negatives comments writtenonADD/ADHD saying that it is an incurable disorder and/ or one has to be on medication forever, etc,my heart hurts. When I see many ADD children suffer from the pangs of this illness, and when they end up being ADD adults and lead miserable lives as adults (I know many of them in my circle: school, college, friends, etc.), I feel the urge to shout out to them that "you don't have to live with ADD or ADHD. You have a way out within your reach. If there is a need, there is a way. It is true. Just read this book. Your life will change. You need to get NAET treatments and you won't be the same again."NAET has transformed my child into a normal human being. I am sure if these parents found NAET, many of their children could become normal too. Children are our future. If we could help our children get healthy, we would have a healthy future.

Book Description

Every year, millions of withdrawn little girls and chronically overwhelmed women go undiagnosed with Attention Deficit Disorder because they don't fit the stereotypical profile: they’re not fast-talking, hyperactive, or inattentive, and they are not male. Sari Solden’s groundbreaking study reveals that ADD affects just as many women as men, and that the resulting depression, disorganization, anxiety, and underachievement are also symptoms of ADD. Newly revised and updated to reflect the latest clinical research, the book explores treatment and counseling options, and uses real-life case histories to examine the special challenges women with ADD and ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) face, such as the shame of not fulfilling societal expectations. Included is a brand new chapter on friendship for women with ADHD. Three empowering steps — restructuring one's life, renegotiating relationships, and redefining self-image — help women take control of their lives and enjoy success on their own terms.

3-0 out of 5 stars Very informative--but don't read it when you're depressed!
It's well-written and this is a subject that deserves attention, since the stereotype of ADD/ADHD is still that of a young, hyperactive boy acting out in the classroom. There's lots of good information in here, targeted mainly towards wives and mothers (I'm neither). There are lots of examples that mention housework, cooking, scheduling, money management, etc. It describes both women with AD/HD and also women with ADD who are quieter, easily distracted, and prone to daydreams (this type usually gets short shrift). If you have depressive tendencies you may want to skip it, check out a library coopy--or read it in very quick bursts. The cumulative effect it had on me was feeling hopeless and trapped, like many of the women in the book. I eventually gave my copy away, despite the plethora of "Aha!" moments. Caution: I'd read it BEFORE giving it to a partner or just copy selective passages; beware of overwhelming him or her with the negative aspects of women and AD/HD.

5-0 out of 5 stars Women with Attention Deficit Disorder
I am 42 years old and was just diagnosed with ADD.After starting medication I was able to read - something I hadn't done in years.I voarciously poured through books on ADD.
As a woman with ADD Sari Solden's book was by far the best.Every page gave me an opportunity to see myself in a different light - making it possible to reframe my guilt and shame...
I had always believed myself to be different - now I know I am and can nuture the strengths of my differences and accomodate my challenges.
Thank you Sari - your book reminds me that my challenges will not disappear upon diagnosis or treatment - but that I need not allow them to define me.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Helpful

Book Description
The number of children being diagnosed with ADD/ADHD has skyrocketed, along with prescriptions for Ritalin and other powerful amphetamine drugs to treat these problem children. This pharmaceutical answer to a behavioral disorder is one of the most controversial subjects in parenting today, and Dr. David Stein offers parents a safe, foolproof alternative.Challenging the disease theories of ADD/ADHD, Stein discusses the conditions in modern society and the American family that cause so many children to hate schoolwork and behave disrespectfully to all authority figures. Rejecting the pill solution, he presents a truly effective parent training program called the Caregivers' Skills Program that helps children learn appropriate behavioral and cognitive skills permanently, without drug therapy. Parents are trained to teach their children to love reading and learning, and to respect authority at home and at school. Stein presents case studies from his own highly successful practice that demonstrate the remarkably effective CSP that can help parents, educators, physicians and therapists treat today's problem children.

5-0 out of 5 stars Life altering
Every parent should read this book. The author points out how societal changes have impacted our kids, i.e. TV, working moms and dads.We all need to reflect on these issues and how they affect our kids.I took my daughter off her medication, turned off the TV on school nights, and used his discipline method. She's doing fine in school and is listening much better.

This book changed our family. If you're willing to work hard, change as a parent, and truly see the changes you want in your family, this is the book for you. It's extremely practical and easy to use.

5-0 out of 5 stars Drug Free Behavior Modification Works!!!!!!
What an amazing book!!!!!!!!!!!!! My life and my child's behavior has changed so dramatically!! The book states that you will see results in 2 weeks, we saw results in one!!! It is hard work to stick with this program but if you do the results are amazing!!! There is so much less yelling and nagging and reminding in our home. There is actually peace. Once I did the research about the commonly used ADHD drugs and there potential side effects I was mortified and resolved to find a drug free way to help my four year old before she starts kindergarten this fall. Things are not perfect but there is such a dramatic change that even her preschool teachers are asking me what I did to bring about this change. DO THE RESEARCH ABOUT DRUGS!!!!!!!!! IN MY OPINION THEY SHOULD BE USED ONLY IN THE MOST EXTREME OF CIRCUMSTANCES! Try this first. If you can stick with it it works. Sometimes its hard. I even had to put up a "How to to discipline my daughter" reminder on the refridgertor to remind me not to go back to the old ways. But if I stick to it, it really works. To be honest I did not really enjoy my child very much before, She was so hyper and unfocused and didnt seem to listen to anything anyone said. We had tried everything. I read several other books, gave her time outs, took toys and privaledges away, sent her to bed early and about everything else I could think of and it never phased her. I almost gave up and figured and ADHD child really couldnt control herself and this was just the way things were going to be. I had nightmares of her entering kindergarten and the teachers calling every day to complain about what a disruptive and uncontrollable child she was. Now we speak. Her self confidence has increased and she is actually cute again. She is proud of herself and her behavior. Thank you to the author for literally changing my and her life. I STRONGLY URGE ALL PARENTS TO GIVE IT A TRY!!!! WHAT HAVE YOU GOT TO LOSE? IF YOU WERE LIKE ME YOU TRIED EVERYTING ELSE ALREADY.

2-0 out of 5 stars Needed for some parents, but...
"If you're going to err then err on the side of toughness"(p166)
"Do not give warning"

Have you ever known a really hyper and misbehaving child who you thought just needed a little bit of discipline in his/her life? This is the book for them. I would not, however, recommend this book to 95% of parents whose children have been diagnosed with ADD/ADHD.

When I read this book, it scared me.The kind of "parenting" described done to a child with ADHD is abusive, and leads only to frustration, anger, rage and despair, and possibly eventually to life long trauma. How do I know?I have ADD, and so did my brother. No, I am not taking medication. Any medication. And my father believed in the kind of methods described in this book.My ADD has only led me to have trouble in school, and daydream constantly, but my brother who had childhood ADD was not so lucky.

Every day, for twelve long years, my father faithfully followed the methods described in this book, with my brother.Extremely smart and argumentative, my brother could be a terror, and was.He "recovered" at puberty like a third of children with ADHD, and luckily has no long term mental damage from the methods supported in this book. But I do.Almost every day I fled outside, to my room, to the neighbors, anywhere, because of the screams of my brother.Even at age 10, when he was given a "time-out", he really did not understand what he had done. The spankings, the immediate, no excuses, no bargaining, no reasoning attitude could of destroyed him.The house would be filled with screams, pleas, wails, that I was helpless to stop, not from physical but from mental abuse. To my brother, he would at any point be snatched away to be padlocked in a room for no apparent reason, even spanked. He had ADD, and it did not work. Period.

ADD is not a disease; it's just a different way that a human brain can work.
There are lots of methods of dealing with ADD without medication then the ones in this book.If you want to treat a child with ADHD without using medication, get another book about it.It might work, and at least it won't be abusive. If your child does not have ADHD, this book is for you.It really does work, just not for kids with ADD.This book is also not for those who do not believe in spanking kids nine times a day.

5-0 out of 5 stars Dr. Stein's Caregiver Skills Program Works
My wife and I read Dr. Stein's books outlining his CSP program because our 8 year old son had a number of behavioral issues, at home and at school, that made some of his teachers ask us if we knew about ADHD. Well, I did, as I took a PhD in psychology from Wisconsin in 1988, and what I knew was that it didn't exist except as a label for a complex of recalcitrant, noncompliant behaviors and a low tolerance for frustration. I also knew that use of psychoactive stimulants, such as Ritalin, amphetamine, and methamphetamine, is especially inappropriate for children as they are very likely to permanently change the structure of the brain, lead to depression and other real diseases, and eliminate any valid basis for the child to experience true self efficacy and pride, not to mention genuine higher order creative thought. So, we read Dr. Stein's books and began applying the techniques with our son. We were astonished at how quickly our child progressed! The dawdling in the morning, frequent emotional outbursts, refusals to comply with directives to do whatever - all these - declined dramatically. Were they completely eliminated? Well, did I say he was 8 years old? If you want to get a true scientific picture about the whole ADHD fiasco, and you also have a child who you desperately want to help and not inadvertently hurt, then I strongly recommend that you start with this and Dr. Stein's other related books, then read Peter Breggin's "Talking Back to Ritalin." Dr. Breggin, an MD and psychiatrist, provides compelling proof not only that ADHD doesn't exist, but that stimulant drugs like Ritalin cause serious physical and psychological harm, and that an extremely powerful industry works hard to perpetuate the mythology of ADHD. Some of the other reviewers here need to read these books, and actually try the CSP program, which is an effective method for addressing the difficult motivational (aka "attentional") problems that many pefectly normal children face. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Opened my eyes
There were things in this book that had never crossed our minds.A great book to have in your collection and easy to understand.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Helpful
As the wife of a husband with ADHD and mother of a son with ADHD, I have struggled for years like many other reviewers to do what is right for "my boys". Sandra Reif offers some very encouraging and helpful strategies in this books. I think the key point that all books on ADHD need to make is that each person with ADHD is an individual with unique talents and gifts, and we need to view these in a positive light. Anyone who has struggled with this needs to read a book called GIFTED by Kirk Martin. It's actually a novel about a young man with ADD who comes to understand that the "disorder" parents and teachers had considered negative all his life actually turns out to be a gift. I think you can read a summary at kirkmartinbooks.com, it presents an entirely new way to view the ones you love.

5-0 out of 5 stars Thorough strategies for teaching ADHD children
I bought this book after I heard Sandra speak at an ADHD convention... A very thorough book on how to teach ADHD children. If you are going to buy just one book that says it all this is it...

5-0 out of 5 stars GREAT Reference for School, or Real Life
This book made me wish that ALL reference books were written this clearly. Whether your looking to use this book to do a presentation in school, a teacher looking for help on teaching ADHD students, or have an ADHD child of your own, this is for you. It's a no non sense, straight forward guide to ADHD. It includes the causes, symptoms, treatment suggestions, and more. It even goes into specific strategies that teachers can use in the classroom.

The best part about it is that its broken down into detailed chapters and sections, making it easy for yout to find EXACTLY what your looking for. It's also written in VERY understandable terms. This is not a medical book, it's a for the average person. This book is an unbeleiveably well written guide to one of the most common learning disabilities of today. If your looking for a great reference, look no further, you've found the best.

4-0 out of 5 stars Quite Theoretically Sound
This 'manual' presents a technical and philosophical overview of the complex array of variables that factor into effective teaching of the ADHD child. The author has compassion as well as insight into the children, who often face rejection and failure. The co-occuring low self esteem can carry over a lifetime.A variety of methodologies specific to learning domains are very helpful for diagnostic purposes and lesson planning. As a principal and mental health administrator, I have this book well-placed on my shelf. I refer to it often and occasionally lend it to my staff who are searching for help with a specific child.

Glancing back at the chapters as I prepared this review, I was actually astounded at the sophisticated details embedded there. In particular I think the information that supports the "multi-sensory" approach is greatly needed. The amount of times we write "multi-sensory" activities just because it fits in an IEP is amazing. My own experience with teachers is that they basically have a very limited understanding of the neurological underpinings of sensory and perceptual limitations.

My only reservation about the book is that despite its layout, it actually is fairly theoretical. I think that when a teacher reaches for it, he or she may be looking for some more 'lesson planning' ideas and tend to gloss over the more comprehensive information. I definitely recommend the book for special education teachers who are genuinely interested in a more in-depth review, as well asfor purposes of diagnostic and prescriptive planning. I also recommend it for administrators who are involved in staff development or individual supervision.
The only other concern I have is that despite the amount of information about the medication questions, it does not include enough about the tomes of research that is available to support augmenting behavioral programs with psychopharmacology. A teacher should check with his or her supervisor to gain access to this data so that they can respond to questions on this highly charged subject with sophisticated and thus helpful answers. ... Dr. Tuckman's comprehensive manual on adult AD/HD is engaging and accessible to professionals and laypeople alike. His clinical case studies make the material instantly relatable, and his down-to-earth suggestions provoke much thought about the way treatment has been done with this population historically and the different lenses through which it must be viewed going forward.Thank you for this wonderful tool--a must-have for all clinicians, whether we believe we work with AD/HD adults or not.

The thoroughness and overall quality of "Integrative Treatment" is not suprising, as I've been familiar with Dr. Tuckman for several years now, and have always been impressed professionally by what he has to offer. No small accomplishment to produce an outstanding, immediately-useable clinical text regarding adult AD/HD - if you doubt that statement, try it yourself. All clinical psychologists have Dr. Tuckman to thank for this work, and by extension, those under their care. No coincidence that my copy arrived just before Thanksgiving...thanks and kudos, Ari! ... Book Description
Autism is an epidemic: It has spiked 1,500 percent in the last twenty years. ADHD, asthma and allergies have also skyrocketed over the same time period. One of these conditions now strikes one in every three children in America. But there is hope. Leading medical innovator Kenneth Bock, M.D., has helped change the lives of more than a thousand children, and in this important book, with a comprehensive program that targets all four of the 4-A disorders, he offers help to children everywhere. This is the book that finally puts hope within reach.

Doctors have generally overlooked the connections among the 4-A disorders, despite their concurrent rise and the presence of many medical clues. For years the medical establishment has considered autism medically untreatable and utterly incurable, and has limited ADHD treatment mainly to symptom suppression. Dr. Bock and his colleagues, however, have discovered a solution – one that goes to the root of the problem. They have found that deadly modern toxins, nutritional deficiencies, metabolic imbalances, genetic vulnerabilities and assaults on the immune and gastrointestinal systems trigger most of the symptoms of the 4-A disorders, resulting in frequent misdiagnosis and untold misery.

Dr. Bock’s remarkable Healing Program, drawing on medical research and based on years of clinical success, offers a safe, sensible solution that is individualized to each child to help remedy these root causes. The biomedical approach to autism, ADHD, and the other 4-A epidemics, as innovated by Dr. Bock and some of America’s finest integrative physicians, is one of the most promising and exciting medical movements of our time.

In this eminently readable account, written by Dr. Bock in collaboration with critically acclaimed author Cameron Stauth, you will meet children and parents whose dramatic stories will inspire you to change the life of your own child. This program may be the help that you have been praying for.

5-0 out of 5 stars Interesting and Informative Book
This book was recommended to me by my pediatrician. I have found it to be very informative and interesting. The individual case stories are a nice addition. I do not have a child with autism so the latter half of the book was not as interesting to me. I do have a young child with allergies and eczema though and my pediatrician recommended the delayed vaccination schedule based on this book since those illnesses are often seen in children with Autism. I would recommend this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Buy It
I am pregnant with my first child and concerned about the influence of vaccines on my baby.My husband's family has gluten intolerance, dairy intolerance, Autism, ADHD, and OCD in the genetics.I found this book to be empowering instead of paralyzing like so many others.I think that with Bock's vaccination schedule and advice, I will feel proactive in the prevention of these disorders in my child.

I've had severe, nearly debilitating allergies all my life.I have a son with Asperger's and another with allergies and respiratory problems, also exhibiting signs of ADD/ADHD.I come with whiplash from being tossed around the medical system.

This is absolutely the best, most helpful, sanest book I have ever read on Autism, Allergies, ADD/ADHD.I'm finally understanding the causes of the epidemic and the treatment options and why they work for certain kids. His information is well documented and comes from solid research.I recommend this book if you have a child with one of the four A's.I recommend this book if you plan to have children in the near future.

I'm currently petitioning Oprah to have Dr. Bock on her show.If you loved this book too, log onto her site and tell her how much you love it and how it's helped. We need to keep the answers to Autism front and center in the media.

5-0 out of 5 stars Humor
I have ADHD. This book made me laugh out loud, which is something hard to come by with this...altered brain of mine.
I've shared it with some of my patients who share this joy as well.

4-0 out of 5 stars A good read
I have mild ADHD, so I'm not as challenged as some of the women in the book seem to be. I learned most of these tips a long time ago. But I still enjoyed the book! I can now explain to people why I can't cook-I inherited ADD from my mom (who is also cooking-challenged)! The reviewer who didn't like the dinner suggestions must not really have ADD-those suggestions are the way I've been cooking since I moved out of my mom's house 30 years ago! My oldest son has sensory processing difficulties, so he will only eat about 6 foods. My youngest son will eat anything, period. My ex was always too spaced out from his unmedicated ADD to eat with us. As the book mentions is true for many women with ADD families, my motivation for learning to cook is pretty low. These "recipes" have protein, carbs and fruits/veggies, so they are well balanced, if maybe different from the way the Cleaver family eats.

There are many good references, especially of internet resources. I did find handy tips in it, also. But for me, the best part was the entertainment value of reading about other women who struggle with the same things I do. I think I can now view my ADHD with humor rather than frustration, knowing there are alot of us out there!

5-0 out of 5 stars Real Women, Real Solutions
The great thing about "Survival Tips for Women with AD/HD" is that it's a handy reference guide for and by real women with AD/HD. Having organization issues? Laundry getting you down? Just flip to the chapter and subheading (clearly identified in the Table of Contents) to quickly look up tips and strategies that work for other women.

Terry Matlen does a great job of keeping the book light-hearted and positive while still covering tons of challenges that women with AD/HD experience. Keep "Survival Tips" close by and make good use of it!

5-0 out of 5 stars We can model self-reliance and collaboration to help our kids learn these behaviors.
Dr. Wiener's brilliant and scholarly work presents the argument of the traditionalists' neurobiological delay model versus the alternative biopsychosocial model in the development and treatment of ADHD. He explains how the traditionalists' view of the cause of ADHD is strictly biological with the necessity for medicinal treatment(s). Whereas, the biopsychosocial model shows us how ADHD behaviors are socially reinforced. Through effort and relearning, Dr. Wiener shows us how we can reinforce non-ADHD behaviors by modeling compassion, listening skills, and mutual respect. We can encourage the development of self-reliance and collaboration through the Socratic method of learning. Dr. Wiener shows us the tremendous influence of biopsychosocial understanding on causes of and remedies for ADHD behaviors. Dr. Wiener shows us that by starting early with our children in teaching self-reliance, self-efficacy, collaboration and negotiating skills in positive, noncritical ways, our children will grow into satisfied, involved, high-achieving and independent adults. I believe his book teaches us all how to be civilized, one family at a time. ... Read more

Excellent resource.I've been working with my 10 year old son who has A.D.D. and I am seeing results in the first week.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must for every family with learning challenges!
Where do you turn when you find out your child has special learning requirements? It can be confusing, overwhelming and frustrating. Socially ADDept is the bestlearning tool a parent canuse to help their child. Itis clear, practical, easy to read and fun for kids and parents to usetogether. Dr. Giler has created the next best tool to having her in yourhome as a guide and expert.-Cherie Carter-Scott, Ph.D., author of"If Life is a Game, These are the Rules"

5-0 out of 5 stars Kidýs Guide to Making Friends
When a friend recommended "Socially ADDept," Dr. Janet Z. Giler's manual of social skills for children with ADHD, I accepted the suggestion with some reluctance. Like every other parent with an ADHD kid, I'm already drowning in pedagogical advice. If raising one of these children were assimple as "love and logic" or "parenting without punishment" these kidswouldn't be any harder to raise than all the others. Pedagogical sloganssell books, but they don't work with bundles of hyperactivity like myAlexander, who's incorrigible social skills have made it difficult to finda baby-sitter willing to spend an evening with him, let alone a teacherwilling to address his academics.

While many schools have programs toimprove reading, writing, and arithmetic, they lack any formal curriculumfor the fourth "R"- arguably the most important one- social refinement.Enter Giler, who's manual for parents of children with ADHD and/or learningdisabilities brings a refreshingly clear, simple, step-by-step, commonsense approach to teaching social skills. Those basic, self-evident skillsthat most of us learn by osmosis, but completely elude ADHD kids like myAlexander.

Giler develops eight, concise lesson plans that guide parentsin teaching kids how to develop congenial relations with peers, teachersand siblings. From proper greetings to managing anger, "Socially ADDept"deciphers the complex rules of none-verbal language into friendly,bite-sized morsels that kids can understand. Somewhat like a "How ThingsWork" of behavior, untangling tricky situations like joining an ongoinggame, in simple step-by-step fashion. Step 1) "Say `hi.' 2) Pay attentionto see if you get a friendly response. 3) Make a comment about the game. Then waituntil you get a friendly response before asking, 4) `Can Iplay?'"

I read through Giler's chapter on "active" listening with thedoubting bias of a parent who's been-there, done that. Just come to ourhouse for a visit, and you'll hear the mantra "Listen to me!" repeated withprickly frustration. Our son, Alexander, "hears" what we're saying, butdoesn't give a slightest hint of interest. We reprimand him, and he replieswith exasperation, "I am listening!" His ears work and his mind process allthe input. But he ignores the body language that closes the "feedbackloop," as Giler describes it, letting us know we're being heard.

With"Socially ADDept" in hand I walked into Alexander's room. He sat on thefloor with an origami book, folding a sheet of blue paper into a peacock. As usual, he didn't even look up at me when I told him about the"friendship" lessons I wanted us try. Following Giler's suggestion, I askedhim to list his best qualities; I knew this question would get him talking. While Alexander described himself with great earnestness, I mirrored hisinattentive stile of listing. Alexander's voice grew louder and his tonemore anxious. I just kept looking through my book, as if in another world. Then when I could hear his frustration peaking I turned toward him andasked, "Do you think I am listening?" Of course, the answer was "no." Butnow I had his attention. So I told him I had a book that, given a chance, could help him become more popular. He liked this idea. We worked throughthe seven page chapter on "Conversational Skills," learning how to keep eyecontact, lean forward slightly, nod, make guttural sounds indicatingagreement, and ask appropriate questions. To my surprise, Alexander enjoyedthe lesson and asked me to leave the book in his room. For him, the simplefacts of none verbal behavior were a mystery revealed.

The most commonsocial errors made by ADHD children are, misreading body language, using"tone" inappropriately, violating other's physical boundaries, perseverating on topics, and failing to show interest in others. Gilerhelps parents and kids come to terms these social errors by teaching tenbasic social skills: 1) listening and responding, 2) smiling and askingquestions, 3) greeting others, 4) giving complements, 5) understanding bodylanguage and vocal tones, 6) understanding personal space and appropriatetouching, 7) joining an ongoing group, 8) sharing and cooperating, 9)ignoring teasing, and 10) managing anger. My son particularly liked thesection on the "Social Behaviors of Popular Children."

People cancompensate for lacking performance skills, like poor spelling, but "thereis no way to compensate for poor social skills," Giler explains. Withoutbasic social graces kids fail. In "Socially ADDept," the elementary rulesof interaction, like turn-taking and understanding personal space, areintroduced and explored in simple, kid-friendly manner. While not achildren's book, this will be an addition to your library your kids willappreciate. You'll appreciate Giler's straightforward, practical style, providing clear examples, new skills, and no guilt trips. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Fresh approach to an everpresent problem
As a graduate student in a counseling program, I found this book to be a great read.Nylund does a great job of explaining his SMART approach to working with children labeled ADHD.While I do agree that ADHD is a real problem for some children, I do feel that too many children are diagnosed with this disorder, resulting in the overdiagnosis and labeling of children at very young ages. With this overdiagnosis comes over-medication of children as well.I think that Nylund's approach offers an alternative for those children and their families who may wish to to tackle ADHD from a different perspective by focusing on the strengths of the child and family instead of treating the ADHD from the deficit model.Great book!I plan to utilize this approach in my work as a counselor.

1-0 out of 5 stars A foolish take on an important topic
Why Nylund would choose to classify Huck Finn as ADD/ADHD is odd.Did he take other factors into account, such as Huck's physically and emotionally abusive alcoholic father, who is a criminal and often absent?Or the fact that he comes from a single-parent, broken home (having lost his mother at a very young age)?

Still, may be helpful to thopse dealing with ADD/ADHD (parents or therapists).

1-0 out of 5 stars ADD is REAL. I know. I have it.
ADD is a real condition. How do I know? Because I have it. And while I do not take Ritalin, (There are so many other medications out there to treat my condition it's sad he only mentions one of them) I know all to well what life is like when I miss a day of my medication. NOTHING gets done. My parents (I'm 17) grow frustrated when they find me spaced out and staring at the walls instead of folding the towels, which they had watched me start some three hours ago.
Anyway, what I wanted to say is that ADD is not just some made up "disease" created to alleviate guilt of parents for not being able to "control" their children. It is all to real.

5-0 out of 5 stars Pay Attention!
As a therapist and a father, I have found this book remarkably insightful. I have met many children (including my own!) who fit the ADHD description. People who pay attention to this book and listen to what David Nylund is saying will be more likely to find answers to the ADHD question.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Eye-Opening Journey
David Nylund's book "Treating Huckleyberry Finn" is written in a simple and straightforward style which helps the reader in understanding an extremely complex issue.

As a new therapist I found the book extremely helpful in providing tips for assisting clients labeled ADHD; with great insights for both parents and teachers of these clients.Mr. Nylund's SMART approach to treating this issue is extremely helpful. The case examples presented help demonstrate both the philosophy and various techniques of the SMART therapy approach.

I found the book easy to read and very thought provoking.ADHD is a multi-facated issue and Mr. Nylund does a great job of asking challenging questions regarding the issue.I highly recommend this book to anyone whose life is challenged and blessed by having high energy children and adolescents in their life. ... Book Description

Providing a new perspective on ADHD in adults, this compelling book analyzes findings from two major studies directed by leading authority Russell A. Barkley. Groundbreaking information is presented on the significant impairments produced by the disorder across major functional domains and life activities, including educational outcomes, work, relationships, health behaviors, and mental health. Thoughtfully considering the treatment implications of these findings, the book also demonstrates that existing diagnostic criteria do not accurately reflect the way ADHD is experienced by adults, and points the way toward developing better criteria that center on executive function deficits. Accessible tables, figures, and sidebars encapsulate the study results and offer detailed descriptions of the methods used.
