Book Description
At Last! A Healthy, Drug-Free Alternative to Ritalin

Nearly one-tenth of all school-aged children in the United States are being coerced into taking mood-altering drugs with side effects that include insomnia, tearfulness, rebound irritability, personality change, nervousness, anorexia, nausea, dizziness, headaches, heart palpitations, and cardiac arrhythmia. These are the children diagnosed with attention deficit disorder (ADD) or attention deficit with hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Ritalin Is Not the Answer confronts and challenges what has become common practice and teaches parents and educators a healthy, comprehensive behavioral program that really works as an alternative to the epidemic use of medication-without teaching children to use drugs in order to handle their behavioral and emotional problems.

5-0 out of 5 stars Somebody's got to say it
The sheer numbers of diagnoses and the sheer numbers of kids on ADD/ADHD meds scares the bejeezus out of me. It just doesn't make rational sense to me that these 'diseases' could appear out of nowhere in such numbers. Somebody has to stand up and question the road that ADD/ADHD adherents are leading our society down before we turn into a nation of pill-popping fools.
My 5 year old was labeled with ADHD. Nothing any of the professionals said could rationally explain to me how it was that my thoughtful, loving, intelligent but energetic kid could suddenly turn into this horror of a wild being the moment he stepped foot into their classroom that they claimed. It made no sense to me.
I am a good parent. Consistent and clear. Patient. Praising, but using consequences. All those things you should do. But Dr. Stein providedguidelines for another whole level of interaction that I could use with my son that brought results! And no, I did not feel invalidated or insulted as some reviewers did. Dr. Stein isn't saying 'you are a bad parent' -- he's saying, 'there's more you can do, and here's how'.

I highly recommend this book to any parent that is seeking an alternative to medications. Give the parenting guidelines an honest and sincere try and see if you don't get good results.

5-0 out of 5 stars OUTSTANDING !!!Effectively debunks the whole ADD/ADHD myth
I have read over 15 books on ADD/ADHD and Ritalin and this one stands out. ADD/ADHD is mostly an utterly criminal myth perpetuated by pharmaceutical industries who look at your child as nothing more than an annuity stream, social workers looking for a new revenue stream, the educational system who believes the ideal student is the stoned, silent, lethargic student, and parents who swallow this line hook, line and sinker because they are looking to rationalize why little Johnny is driving them nuts and looking for a simple solution ("just a pill a day and all your problems go away...") and the publishing business (An amazon search on "ADD" turned up 6,500+ hits; You tell me this isn't an industry).

Did you know Ritalin is an amphetamine? Does anyone see the irony in pushing amphetamines to 5 year olds while arresting 15 year olds that take them?

Are you aware there has not been a single, FDA approved study on Ritalin and young children?

Are you aware that there are more diagnoses of ADD/ADHD each year than there are cancer, heart attacks, lung cancer, breast cancer, etc. COMBINED !!!! There is medical consensus on what causes all those things yet there is no consensus on exactly what ADD/ADHD is, no consensus on its cause, no consensus on what area of the brain is impacted, in short, no consensus on anything about ADD/ADHD, which should be the biggest red flag. When there is no facts, but plenty of opinions, you need to ask yourself it its even real in the first place. This book's first few chapters explore the facts and myths around ADD/ADHD. You owe it to your children to educate yourself before you become just another pusher.

Probably less than 5% of children diagnosed as ADD/ADHD warrant medication. The other 95% are pawns in a multi-billion dollar game. This book recommends some simple yet efective - and amphetamine free - parenting strategies that address the behavior patterns that cause children to get labelled ADD/ADHD. You owe it to your children to try these before you become just another drug pusher.

4-0 out of 5 stars Successful use of techniques
I read many of the reviews of this book before I made my purchase. In reading this and many other ADHD books, I agree that for a successful life, one must learn to control one's behavior or be eaten alive by society in one way, shape or form.

The strict disciplinary tact outlined by this book has helped tremendously in curbing my 6 year old's impulsive behaviors. The understanding of the use of affirmative and positive reinforcement as well as "boredom" as a consequence has truly helped our son as well as our parental sanity. This book may not be for everybody - but it is a Godsend for our family.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the better Theories
I am what most people would call ADD.I call it being me. I've read at least 20 different books on this subject and other books too that seem to touch on the subject such as "The Difficult Child" and I think (not sure if exact) the "Out of Sync Child".My son threw me for a loop with his personality.I've come to realize that he has a lot of my personality traits and has the mixture of male tendencies on top of that.He has the focusing problems at school and is my more emotional child.I've noticed that as he has gotten older outbursts are less. But I learned a long time ago to be firm with him. I'm just not firm to the degree that I should be. I knew that before I got the book. I had read it before, but forgotten about it. After checking it out again from the library and reading it, I decided to buy it and try it.

I don't condemn anyone who decides to give their child medication. I am just very careful of what is put into the body either mentally or physically.

There are so many different factors involved in why a child acts out. There are food allergies/sensitivities that run in families. Sometimes environmental sensitivities are present. Then you have class size, and the possibility of teacher and student conflicting personalities. Sometimes a learning disability such as dyslexia is present. That's just a few reasons and there are so many more.

I LOVE science but sometimes logic isn't used by scientists.
If something is a THEORY, then it means it is an educated guess. After reading some of the Drug Information Inserts, I discovered that a lot of time (whether for prescription drugs or over the counter ones), the scientists aren't sure how the drug works. They simply state how they BELIEVE it works. Read the wording sometime. You may have to ask for the drug information insert because they don't include them with prescription drugs. Basically it is assumed if the drug creates the effect wanted, then it probably works in the way that their theory suggests. Everyone's body is different and they cannot predict how your specific body will react.

Your sleep, diet, exercise, food, and your thoughts affect your brain chemicals.I know that has been proven.

After observing the side effects of antidepressants and other researched drugs on loved ones, friends, and other people, I just don't have a clear conscience about giving my son a drug for ADD. The drug is one THEORY that I'm not willing to try until I've tried other THEORIES, including the one in this book.

No one is perfect including scientists and doctors. Ultimately, the parent is the one who is responsible for their child. It is a awesome responsibility that overwhelms you at times. You have to take time to get to the root of your child's problems. Then you have to take time to deal with the it. There is never overnight answers or solutions. Also, you have to train kids to be independent and mature, or you and they will live with more regrets than any of you want.

I know that with me, I make my own choices and I have to be responsible for the consequences good or bad. I don't expect my son to be perfect.I just want him to grow up to be the well-rounded responsible adult that he needs to be. I think that with the approach from this book, my children and I will learn better new habits and drop bad old ones.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Answer to a Prayer
My son was diagnosed with ADHD in kindergarden. He was on medication until after I read this book when he was in third grade. This book has been a godsend. We use the techiques in the book, and he has been on the A/B honor roll for the last 3 years. His self-esteem and self-control has improved greatly. He consistently thinks before he acts.I would recommend this book to anyone with a child with ADHD, and I have recommended it to many of my students' parents ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Practical, Common Sense Help
Dr. Gant's book is worth reading if you are intersted in the truth about ADD/ADHD.He describes the biochemistry in a manner that lay persons can understand so that they are not left in mystery about this disorder. He then gives answers and solutions, which is refreashing.

This knowledge will help parents to better understand and question the advice of others. This book would be a best seller if it weren't so profitable to treat the symptoms of this disorder and view it as a "chronic", long term expense.Dr. Gant is to be commended for his love of children, his visionary approach to healing and his courage to think "outside the box" and find solutions and cures.

This bookshould be mandatory reading for all persons who are directly or indirectly involved with this disorder.Readers will find that the truth makes much more sense and is refreshing and empowering!

4-0 out of 5 stars A must read for parents considering Ritalin et al.
If you are willing to take the time to read this book from cover to cover, you will learn how many factors contribute to the symptoms of ADHD,depression, anxiety etc. for all people not just children. The details ofthe biochemistry and neurotransmitter activity as well as treatmentprotocols answered many questions for me that other MD's and PhD's couldnot answer. Most importantly - yes, there are blood tests that indicatewhere the problem(s) lie, and yes, there are natural treatments to give thebody what it needs to repair itself. Our child read parts of the book withme and became very motivated to follow the protocol once he understood whatwas going on inside of him. He especially enjoyed following the diagrams ofthe chemical pathways and learning how a missing "ingredient"i.e. amino acid or fatty acid, causes the production to slow down whichcauses the body to show certain symptoms. We brought our child to beevaluated by Dr. Gant and were impressed with his intelligence, warmth andexperience.Children suspected or diagnosed with ADHD and other relateddisorders deserve to have their care-givers read this book. ... Medication? Maybe. Marry the right person and find the right job? A must if you are an adult suffering from ADD (Attention Deficit Disorder). So say psychiatrists Edward M. Hallowell and John J. Ratey, authors of the influential Driven to Distraction, published in 1994. In their new book, Delivered from Distraction, Hallowell and Ratey survey the current medical landscape concerning ADD, combining their own clinical observations with the latest research to paint a much more complex and, in many ways, positive picture of the condition than has generally been presented.

Hallowell and Ratey embrace the idea that success in life comes more from playing to your strengths than overcoming your weaknesses. In the case of a person with ADD (child or adult), these strengths often include unusually high levels of creativity, charisma, intelligence, and energy. The authors insist that, while medication and other treatments can sometimes work wonders in reducing limitations, surrounding yourself with people who promote these positive traits, be they in your personal or professional life, is the single most important element to living well with ADD. As both Hallowell and Ratey are not only experts in the field, but "ADDers" themselves, the tips and stories they share for how to do so are fresh, funny, and far more helpful than tired arguments over drugs verse no drugs or whether there's even such a thing as ADD at all.--Patrick JenningsBook Description
In 1994, Driven to Distraction sparked a revolution in our understanding of attention deficit disorder. Widely recognized as the classic in the field, the book has sold more than a million copies. Now a second revolution is under way in the approach to ADD, and the news is great. Drug therapies, our understanding of the role of diet and exercise, even the way we define the disorder–all are changing radically. And doctors are realizing that millions of adults suffer from this condition, though the vast majority of them remain undiagnosed and untreated. In this new book, Drs. Edward M. Hallowell and John J. Ratey build on the breakthroughs of Driven to Distraction to offer a comprehensive and entirely up-to-date guide to living a successful life with ADD.

As Hallowell and Ratey point out, “attention deficit disorder” is a highly misleading description of an intriguing kind of mind. Original, charismatic, energetic, often brilliant, people with ADD have extraordinary talents and gifts embedded in their highly charged but easily distracted minds. Tailored expressly to ADD learning styles and attention spans, Delivered from Distraction provides accessible, engaging discussions of every aspect of the condition, from diagnosis to finding the proper treatment regime. Inside you’ll discover

• whether ADD runs in families
• new diagnostic procedures, tests, and evaluations
• the links between ADD and other conditions
• how people with ADD can free up their inner talents and strengths
• the new drugs and how they work, and why they’re not for everyone
• exciting advances in nonpharmaceutical therapies, including changes in diet, exercise, and lifestyle
• how to adapt the classic twelve-step program to treat ADD
• sexual problems associated with ADD and how to resolve them
• strategies for dealing with procrastination, clutter, and chronic forgetfulness

ADD is a trait, a way of living in the world. It only becomes a disorder when it impairs your life. Featuring gripping profiles of patients with ADD who have triumphed, Delivered from Distraction is a wise, loving guide to releasing the positive energy that all people with ADD hold inside. If you have ADD or care about someone who does, this is the book you must read.

5-0 out of 5 stars I thought I was reading a book about myself
This is an excellent book for those who have ADD/ADHD, or a love one who has it.This book is easy to read, gets to the point (that were not crazy), and is very informative.

5-0 out of 5 stars Oh my gosh!
This is insane! For 28 years (my whole life) I couldn't understand what the hell was wrong with me. Why I had to read lines over and over. Why I got so bored with family or waiting for people to get to the point; Why my grades in school were bad... I knew I wasn't totally stupid, but I could never figure out why information never got absorbed....

FINALLY.... Finally someone is putting into words, what I could NEVER, EVER explain to my family and friends. I'm only into Chapter 5 so far, and I give the book a 5 star. It's as though you think you're the only person in the world that had to live like this and everyone around you is functioning just fine.

THANK YOU.THANK YOU.

4-0 out of 5 stars Driven But Then Delivered From Distraction
Finally a book on how to deal with ADD.Enjoyed the practical and easy explanations which is a good read for those of us who do have ADD.Talk about hitting the nail on the head with descriptions of those of us who have ADD!Yes, and I even started reading the end of the book before I started at the beginning which is a habit we ADDers have as written in the book. The book is written so you can skip around the chapters without missing information. There is even a special chapter if you can't finish the entire book.I recommend reading this book for those who have ADD and those who have ADDers in your lives.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is an amazing resource
I've got the audio version of this book, but I bought the paper version for my girlfriend. It has been immeasurably helpful in my pursuit of ADHD treatment.

5-0 out of 5 stars If only...
This is one of those books that is both a gift... and very upsetting.- - When I was coming up, the terms ADD and ADHD were just becoming popular... only they were becoming so popular a lot of people were having trouble taking them seriously.- - It seemed like a faddy diagnosis and an excuse to medicate any kid who the television set couldn't babysit for adequately... At that time, I should note that it was clear that I had some kind of learning disability - -yet was a supposed "gifted underachiever" - - meaning I had a supposed "borderline genius" IQ but was too "lazy", "disorganized", "unfocused" even "bored" with school work.
(Back then the only treatments were "punishment", "tolerance" or counseling to deal with the "problem behaviors")
Ironically enough, just after I finished HS the SIMPSON'S became popular, and the term GIFTED UNDERACHIEVER also became a popular term... When I went to school however, bad grades meant STUPID... and there is no doubt, I carry some of the trauma and ridicule today (*Teachers just LOVE calling on ADD kids when they're not paying attention and singling them out.... supposedly to shame them into paying attention, but in reality, as an ADD'er I think it was just one trauma built on another!)

O.K. Years passed... and because of my inability to achieve in conventional settings I can't begin to describe all the problems, conflicts and restlessness I had in life... (and here is where I begin to get back on topic....)
HAVING READ THIS BOOK I actually read chapters of my own life story to such a point that had a been able to go back 28 years and been told "this is your future" - - I would have actually been able to read it and have SEEN my future (as well as perhaps get help.)

Anyway, recently I learned that I had ADHD, and you can have ADHD without being "hyper" - - and in looking deeper I realized that my life was a text book on ADD and it explained everything - - so here's my point:
Dr. Hallowell makes a lot of suggestions and leaves it open to the reader to choose... medication, therapy, coaching, 12 step program - - even yoga, medidation and nutritional supplements. Some may very well be quack therapies, others may be under-explored answers - - throw all bias aside fact is this: Had somebody given me this book 20 years ago... (long pause) I probably would have lost it (<-- ADD joke.... sorry.) But seriously... had I read this book a long time ago the anecdotes alone would have given me a lot of insight and helped circumvent a lot of pain.

In conclusion:- - No, the book does not offer an all in all 100% proven solves all single cure... but it offers OPTIONS...as well as anecdotes that not only demonstrate what its like to have ADD, but are cathartic to read as well...so I see this book as a gift... Looking back, I now realize I suffered because this wasn't common knowlege when I was a kid... on the other hand ADD is nothing new... there have been unfocused, disorganized yet creative people since the begining of time...now however, a syndrome that describes a condition that many people like me have is being formally studied and treatment options are being explored.

In conclusion, this book not only makes an insightful read, but may very well be a gift waiting to be given.

Book Description

This far-reaching work from renowned scientist-practitioner Russell A. Barkley provides a radical shift of perspective on ADHD. The volume synthesizes neuropsychological research and theory on the executive functions, illuminating how normally functioning individuals are able to bring behavior under the control of time and orient their actions toward the future. Meticulously applying this model to an examination of the cognitive and social impairments manifested in ADHD, Barkley offers compelling new directions for thinking about and treating the disorder. The paperback edition features a new afterword in which the author reflects on current research directions and the continuing evolution of his approach.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Ever on This Topic
This contribution by Russell A. Barkley is a masterpiece in review and analysis of the confusing, confounding and frustrating topic of ADHD. Dr. Barkley's book is pitched at somewhat higher than the average layperson, maybe toward the BA in psychology or healthcare professional. However, the clear prose style will articulate to those with first hand daily experience in coping with ADHD in family members. The behavioral scenarios layed out by Dr. Barkley hit close to home for caregivers in this area. A must read for those serious about learning about ADHD.

1-0 out of 5 stars I am both appalled and scared at this piece of literature.
I know one can't really write a review for a book one has not yet read. But from what I have heard and read from other people who have seen this work--yes, I say "work" because that's exactly what this author is--I am saddened and appalled that this man is called an "expert" on ADHD.I have combined-type ADD myself, and even if I did not, I would certainly not read something that is so utterly defensive in nature and not at all directed toward the goal of helping us to understand ADHD, but making a mockery of those of us who have it, parents who have children with ADHD (and/or parents who have ADHD themselves), and TRUE experts who actually want to inform with no ulterior motives in mind.

How dare this man basically tell me I'm less than human. He should be "properly delt with" as well.

2-0 out of 5 stars Listen to his techniques, but question his theories
I am a clinical psychology doctoral student with ADHD who has sat and listened to Dr. Barkley's lectures, in person, on this subject at an ADHD seminar. From someone who knows this condition from the inside, this literature through my studies, and much theoretical literature outside of this field, here are my impressions:
1. Dr. Barkley's recommendations for treatment of ADHD are useful to both those of us who possess this difference and for parents as well. He has done much good work in this area.
2. Dr. Barkley is clearly threatened by newer perspectives on ADHD based in evolutionary psychology that may, in fact, help explain why this difference, which appears to have a strong genetic basis, continues to exist in such large numbers in the population. He is disparaging and rather arrogant in his treatment of others' ideas on the subject in person, making jokes at their expense which I was appalled that other psychologist appeared to find humorous.
3. In person, he also makes jokes at the expense of children with ADHD.He does not appear to have empathy for those with this difference; his empahty appears limited to those who must "deal" with this difference in others, be it parents, teachers, employers, etc.Again, I was appalled at his crass attempts at humor targeted at individuals with ADHD during the seminar I attended. It was akin to making "fat jokes" at a medical seminar on obesity, although Dr. Barkley seemed oblivious to the lack of propriety of such jokes, and furthermore, did not appear to believe that anyone in the educated audience he was addressing could suffer from ADHD.
4. He is so married to his own theoretical views, which have made him a "renowned expert" in the area of ADHD that many of his attacks on other theoretical viewpoints are clearly defensive in nature and aimed to protect his career and status in the field. His disdain for Thomas Hartman was quite apparent at the seminar, for example, although there is now some evidence that Hartmann's idea (it's not quite a theory yet) that individuals with ADHD were adaptive in past cultural environments is quite possible and supported by evidence concerning other conditions that were once protective in different physical environments (i.e., sickle cell anemia and its protection against malaria).

All in all, my recommendation is to listen to his treatment planning, but take his theories with several grains of salt.

5-0 out of 5 stars hope
This book offers hope in a way that many attitudes don't offer.
The criticisms of the book surprise me. Everyone talks about strategies. The author is doing that also and doing it in a hopeful way. I hate the term, attention deficit. Most people are too quick to feel that a student can't develop self-control. If a person thinks they can't control themselves, they can't. One of the psychiatrists in the mental health center where I work said that the largest handicap is often a patient's perception of the diagnosis.

There are several children's books that help children develop strategies for self-control and a hopeful attitude. One is a new book titled, Whoa Wiggle-worm. One of the characters is named Lickety-split. Cool and uncool nicknames is one of the things they deal with in the book. Self-control is shown on a level that children can relate to.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent study presenting a new theory of ADHD
My main reason for writing is to point out that the earlier reviewer who criticized Barkley for the passage about the 3 Little Pigs completely misunderstood the point Barkley was trying to make.Barkley was not saying that he thought that ADHD people deserved what they got; he was saying that some people who misunderstood what ADHD was all about might believe that ADHD people deserved what they got.The reviewer did not read Barkley carefully. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Jumpin' Johnny Get Back to Work!: A Child's Guide to ADHD/Hyperactivity
This is a good book which speaks to a child in helping them understand that they are not the only ones with these issues.A lot of times, books speak "louder" than parents.:)

4-0 out of 5 stars Well done
This book is actually funny. It hits on the aspects of ADHD perfectly, right down to the angelic little sister who can do no wrong. There are some words in the book I wish were not there, like stupid and crazy.I bought it to read to my 5 year old who is ADHD, but with no learning disablities...yet. So I figure we will skip the part on learning disablilities, and being given less homework from the rest of the class.Use it for a tool to help explain what we are doing as a family to address the ADHD, and help him control his behavior.Read it first, cut out what you don't think applies or needs to be heard by your child. The book is mostly informative, and really funny.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great, down-to-earth kid's view of ADHD!
I bought this book for my 6-year-old nephew and will read it to him when he comes to live with us soon.I can't wait, because it is so simplywritten and straightforward, I'm sure it will help him understand what wehave not been able to tell him about his ADHD condition. It isentertaining, and because it is told in a kid's point of view, it showsADHD with concerns that kids would have that adults might not have eventhought of.I recommend it if you're trying to find just the right way ofreaching your child or student! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A very useful and "user friendly" self-help guide
Triumph Over ADD, ADHD & Tourette Syndrome by Agi Lidle is a very useful and "user friendly" self-help guide for the non-specialist general reader to using good nutrition, open thinking, and a healthy lifestyle to combat the difficulties of ADD, ADHD & Tourette Syndrome -- instead of a sole reliance on prescription drugs. A disclaimer at the beginning warns that the advice, recipes, and techniques herein cannot substitute for professional medical diagnosis and treatment; and with that caveat in mind, Triumph Over ADD, ADHD & Tourette Syndrome has a great deal of practical value to offer the reader. Positive anecdotes, and a straightforward guide to transforming oneself round out Triumph Over ADD, ADHD & Tourette Syndrome, all of which offers a valuable approach that should be held in high consideration. I work at an elementary school, so I was hoping this was something I could share with the kids I see every day.Instead of helpful information, I found this book extremely negative. There is nothing hopeful, or inspiring, or encouraging. It promotes the mind-set that "I can't do that, I'm different, I'm not capable...".I shared the book with our RSP teacher and Psychologist, and they felt the same way.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best ADHD book around!

Book Description
This is a guide for people dealing with Attention Deficit Disorder, Hyperactivity, and Food Allergies. This book is for those who are looking for altenative methods for dealing with these problems,as well as those who are using medication. This book is a cookbook, a food shopping guide, as well as a guide to help read ingredient lables. It includes recipes for a healthy nutritional diet that include a variety of everyday foods kids eat.

The sections include ingredients to avoid, a weeks sample menu and shopping list, eating out-what to order, a list of acceptable food brands, and everyday recipes.

There are other books out there that tell parents to do elimination diets, most by very popular doctors. This however is a guide on how to do it, by a mom who has.

This book was written with the input of Dr. Richardson of Mesa Pediatrics who deals with ADD and ADHD within his practice. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars message from the author
Help Me Behave! is a guide especially designed for those who are attempting to track down problem foods. Corn products are the first to be eliminated in this guide. Most people are unaware that corn by-products are so abundant in all aspects of our food supply, especially in the United States. For example, if you brush your teeth, use paper plates, cook or eat in a restaurant, you are using corn products. It is the most difficult food item to eliminate. Studies are now showing that corn is one of the top allergens. After eliminating corn it is much easier to identify all other problem foods. The other products I suggest eliminating are artificial colors, sweeteners, and flavors, BHA, BHT, MSG, and Sulfur Dioxide. These additives have been suspect in a multitude of health problems, specifically ADD and ADHD for years. Fortunately these ingredients are completely nutritionally unnecessary. Every person's sensitivities are unique. An elimination diet is a tool used to identify which adaptations are necessary on a person by person basis. At times it can be very difficult to pinpoint an exact cause. In cases where medication is necessary, the best nutrition is essential. Taking out the products I have specified leaves only good nutritional options.

1-0 out of 5 stars Insufficient guide
I am terribly unsatisfied with this book.I was searching for recipes related to feeding child with ADD and this popped up. Unfortunately Ms. Goodyke eliminates mostly corn products which are only one of 5 areas for my son.Due to sensitivities to chocolate (which is in most of the sweets) and any sugar most of these were complete unusable.I have reverted to allery cookbooks (much much better) and candida diet/recipe books (which are awesome for eliminating most common allergens). There is not even reference to alternatives for wheat, eggs etc. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Interesting insight into child behavior
Dr. Wiener has created a very thoughtful and insightful interpretation of ADHD behavior. This popular diagnosis is often thought of as a medical disorder, when actually the diagnosis is purely descriptive of specific behaviors --- with no implications of what is causing the behavior, or, subsequently, how to extinguish it."Returning to psychology", Dr. Wiener questions some of the current medical data and invites us to consider the subtle reinforcers that can perpetuate these patterns. With this new understanding we are able to respond differently to our children and, therefore, elicit a different behavioral response from them. This is a powerful tool for clinicians working with families who are experiencing disruptive behavior from a child. ...
