Product Description

"New, scientifically-based approaches that recognize the biological basis of addiction have brought major advances in the treatment of addiction. Dr. Urschel is at the forefront of this treatment paradigm."
Dr. Larry Hanselka, Psychologist

The Proven Scientific Approach to Conquering Addiction and Defeating the Disease

Healing the Addicted Brain is a breakthrough work that focuses on treating drug and alcohol addiction as a biological disease—based on the Recovery Science program that has helped thousands of patients defeat their addictions over the past 10 years. It combines the best behavioral addiction treatments with the latest scientific research into brain functions, providing tools and strategies designed to overcome the biological factors that cause addictive behavior along with proven treatments and medications.

Using this scientific approach, you will learn to conquer the physical factors that keep people tied to drug and alcohol addiction. The proven fact is addiction is not a moral failing or an issue of not having enough willpower. It is a disease of the brain that can and must be treated like other chronic medical illnesses —such as diabetes, hypertension, or asthma—in order to defeat the disease.

This revolutionary program can triple the success rate of patients, from 20-30% to 90%

There Is Hope.

By understanding addiction and using 21st-century breakthroughs, for the first time drug and alcohol addiction can be, and will be, defeated. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Bald and biased claims mixed with way too much marketing and self-promotion
Urschel's book is quite simply intellectually dishonest. He obviously knows his stuff, but the book reads like a multi-level marketing scheme filled with a bunch of simply wrong-headed claims with no references to speak of to back them up.

"Talking therapy can help correct problems in the cortex, but it cannot influence the limbic system or other structures found deeper in the brain."

This is bogus, just bogus, and he provides no reference. Where is he coming up with this??? As a therapist who studies neuroscience, he's just flat wrong. There's not a neuroscience lab in the world that would agree with this statement.Look at the work of Richie Davidson at U of Wisconsin, Jim Coan at U of Virginia, Daniel Siegel at UCLA, Dacher Keltner at UCLA, Jon Kabat-Zinn at U of Mass., and the list goes on and on.

His constant use of "talking therapy" to refer to psychotherapy and counseling, and the contexts in which he used it felt a little bit denigrating after a while, again from a guy who obviously has a severe case of money-making agenda-itis.

Reading the book felt like he was just trying to discredit everything except his "wonder drug" and his highly expensive website services.

Apart from that, if you're an addict or looking for help for an addict, just go to his website and see what it costs to sign up -- if you want to pay that, then get the book. But there are a lot better books out there and some great research (despite what Urschel says) that are showing excellent results...I would pass on this guy's magic pill.

Very important subject; tools to assist in the recovery of substances are extremely valuable. New information is necessary to keep us all up to date.A Synchronous Memoir of Addiction and Recovery
Aaron Bryant: BSW, CSAC Author

1-0 out of 5 stars Not for reasonably intelligent people
Before you buy this book, click on the "Look inside!" link and choose First pages, and if you are aren't offended by the writing style then go ahead and buy the book. I am looking for concrete science-based explanations, not condescending blather addressing me as if I were a not-very-bright adolescent, with expressions like "talking cells" and "listening cells".Really? What ARE these cells? What precisely does he mean by "talking" and "listening"?I was so offended I didn't buy the book, especially after looking in index as well and finding that dopamine, a key player in addiction, is mentioned on only three pages in the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars A thoroughly modern take on substance abuse.
Years of dealing with individuals attempting to walk the straight and narrow path of sobriety have led to many insights into addiction and recovery.Yet, as I have introduced clients to the recovery process, I have not had a sound source of scientific evidence to explain the changes in their brains and the basis for their anxiety and cravings. In clear and understandable terms the author of Healing the Addicted Brain reveals the scientific underpinnings of addiction, withdrawal, and recovery. Now I know why high anxiety marks every waking hour of the addict in recovery and how cravings lead to relapse. Being able to explain the process in lay terms to a hard core addict is one of the most difficult parts of my job. This book is a fantastic resource to assist in the education of clients and to use as a guide through the difficult days of early recovery.

1-0 out of 5 stars Addicts and Loved One's as Cash-Generating Machines?
I expected more from a doctor that has made it his career to "help" alcoholics and addicts.

Throughout the book, the author repetitively tells the reader to access more information and resources at the EnterHealth's (the rehab facility the author is affiliated with) website... of course the author never once mentioned that to access that information and those resources would cost $95 and rapidly escalate up for telephone support (and given the track record, that access will probably point the reader to residential rehab at EnterHealth's facility). Most sales brochures are free, but this one puts the addict and family backabout $11.

Also, the climax of this book seems to be the author's fascination with Vivitrol (injectible naltrexone).Author (page 73): "Vivitrol is the breakthrough medicine that will revolutionize the treatment of alcoholism."Really? In its page-after-page of glowing review the author fails to mention any real downside.Such as throughout a randomized trial of Vivitrol craving persisted (leaving patients to struggle over obsessive thoughts and addictive craving that carry the risk of relapse and death) and there was no progressive decrease in heavy drinking days after the end of the trial. [Source: "Naltrexone treatment for alcohol dependency," Journal of the American Medical Association 294(8) (August 24/31, 2005): 899-900]And, those with liver issues should not take Vivitrol, ... a problem for a certain percentage of people that are alcoholic. That the author doesn't even mention some fascinating research into other medications, such as Baclofen -- a generic no less, shows either bias or ignorance of current trends in research and thought.

I was trying to look for some positive information from the book to make this review seem more balanced, but all such information can be retrieved elsewhere (other contemporary addiction recovery books or online).

Unnecessarily taking money from people struggling with alcoholism or addiction should be considered unethical.

5-0 out of 5 stars ANYTIME YOU NEED IT SUPPORT
This little pocket size book has been vital for those times when I need to get out of my own head for a second in a healthy way and gain nurishing food for thought. I've thought many times about the message I've received when I opened it up, it's right where I am emotionally even if I don't really want to see it at the time. I hasn't failed yet to deliver just what I need to hear when I need to hear it.
I've since purchased The Pocket Sponsor for all my sponcees and they love it. I've given them as gifts and used them as topics for discussion groups. There isn't one person that I've shared this little book with that doesn't agree that it has powerful messages.
It's a terrific book!!! I carry it on the motorcycle, in my purse, in my pocket, it even goes to the beach with me.
I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to have acceptance of others, gratitude and some peace of mind in their lives. That's how it works for me anyway, one day at a time and sometimes one minute at a time. Whatever works for you.

5-0 out of 5 stars So Helpful
This book fits right in my pocket and when I feel a little shaky about keeping clean and sober I just take it out and read the meditation for that day and hour.I'm always surprised about how many times it hits the nail on the head and I go on with my day clean and sober!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Wisdom for every hour of every day
From John Howard Prin, author of STOLEN HOURS: Breaking Free From Secret Addictions, Syren Books, 2004

This dandy tool belongs in every recovering addict's pocket. I consider it a tool because for anyone who was once captive to addictive urges its small size contains huge pay-offs -- it serves the person seeking sobriety as a combination daily devotional/day planner. Regardless of what time of day or night (or week or month), the POCKET SPONSOR provides pithy advice.

It is divided into 24 brief paragraphs-with-sayings for every hour of each day, Day 1 through Day 31. Like one's sponsor in an AA or other 12-Step group, it provides the guidance and encouragement in writing that the sponsor would usually provide in conversation. Designed as a basic 24/7 form of support, it allows the beginner, or those beginning again, to carry a little bit of the fellowship from their 12-step meetings with them wherever they go.

As a professional counselor and recovering individual myself, I agree with the author when she says, "Anytime during the day that you feel uneasy, find the day and hour and read your message...Again and again, you will discover new passages that are exactly what you need at that moment."

Product Description
"Treatment Planning for Person-Centered Care puts the entire concept of individualized service planning into understandable language for all readers. The authors have captured the essence of active involvement of the persons served in the identification of needs (as well as strengths) and the development of a plan that will address those needs. This book is definitely in concert with and supports the CARF Behavioral Health standards, and would be an excellent resource to better understand how to move towards a person-centered assessment and planning process."
-Nikki Migas, M.P.A., Managing Director, Behavioral Health Customer Service Unit, CARF. the Rehabilitation Accreditation Commission

"This book encourages the field to turn a very important corner. It clarifies the goals and the processes that Mental Health and Alcohol/Drug systems presently need to focus on: joining with clients to help them enter/re-enter their communities and successfully exit the treatment systems. This book will help practitioners develop the necessary conceptual overview as well as individual components of service plans that will significantly enhance our clients' chances for real world success."
-Ed Diksa, California Institute for Mental Health

"The authors take what for many clinicians is irritating paperwork requirement, treatment planning, that is a diversion from their "real" work of therapy and turn it into a valuable tool. By placing the person, the client at the center of planning, Adams and Grieder take the reader step by step through a transforming process. They lead us to re-think whose goals we are trying to achieve in treatment. This book could precipitate many fruitful seminar discussions during clinical training."
-Eric Goplerud, Ph.D., George Washington University Medical Center

Product Description

Addiction invades every region and demographic in the United States, affecting more than 23 million Americans and putting families though a heartbreaking cycle of recovery and relapse. Many people give up and never find the right treatment that will enable them to break free of their addiction forever.

Offering a radical new approach, clinical psychologist Dr. Morteza Khaleghi argues that the vast majority of drug and alcohol addiction is driven by an emotional trauma. A pioneer of the dual diagnosis recovery program, he treats the body for chemical dependency while simultaneously ministering to the emotional block that serves as a trigger for relapse. A regular advisor on the Dr. Phil show, Dr. Khaleghi has mapped out recovery plans for thousands of patients and their families.  Well-known facilities such as Hazelden, Sierra Tucson, and the Betty Ford Center refer their toughest cases to him, looking to his vast experience and high rate of success. In this groundbreaking book, he teaches you the methods that have made him the therapist that other therapists turn to for advice.

Families will learn how to

•           Recognize addictive behavior

•           Plan and stage effective interventions

•           Work on the family dynamics that enable addiction

Patients will learn to

•           Become self aware about addictive behavior

•           Identify the emotional trauma that is at the heart of nearly every addiction

Alcoholism is a lifelong condition from which there is no cure. Chris McCully does not offer warnings or exhortations, but gives witness to the banal, terrifying and commonplace nature of addiction, and to the slow process of recovery. 5-0 out of 5 stars Turning Point
I had this book sent to my brother in jail. He came out inspired to give himself a "Second Chance."

5-0 out of 5 stars A quick and nourishing read
Second Chances is not the Big Book, but it packs a powerful message. It arrived in my mail box last Saturday and I'm reading it for a second time. This little volume has so many great insights, that it's not possible to absorb them all in one reading. Whether you've been in recovery for many years, a newcomer, or you're a business professional looking for tips on how to achieve greater integrity and leadership in business this is the book for you.

Second Chances is going on my shelf right along side my Big Book, The Power of Now, and As a Man Thinketh.

5-0 out of 5 stars Brutally honest look at addiction
Second Chance is a collection of 16 stories of people who were trapped in addictive behavior but made successful recoveries. For the most part, these people were highly successful, some even household names. But fame and fortune does not protect a person from becoming an addict.

A large number of these became addicted quite early in life, starting on the path as early as grade school or high school. The stories are brutally honest. It can be painful to read about how so many of them had so much, thought it would not, could not happen to them.It seems that one trait they all had in common was the ability to deny there was a problem. Many lost fortunes, suffered broken marriages and often they resorted to crimes to support their habits.

There are some very valuable lessons to learn from this book:

It can happen to anyone - it does not matter how well educated, how successful in business - it is much easier to fall into the trap than to get out.

Almost all cases the person denies they have a problem until they are very deep in trouble. And the very first step to recovery is admitting - honestly facing up to the problem.

There is a huge difference between drying out and being sober.Being sober is more a state of mind - it is actually wanting to be free of the addiction.

The 12 step program will work if someone really puts their mind to it, finds a sponsor and attends the meetings. It seems that those who fail to attend the meetings are much more likely to fall back into the bad habits.

This book will probably not serve to deter anyone on the road to destruction since one of the characteristics seems to be denial. For someone wanting to break the chains of addiction, it should serve as an inspiration.Others have probably fallen further but have successfully fully recovered. So these people are showing an example of how they actually recovered.

If you know someone struggling, give them a copy. When they are truly ready, it will serve as a great example of what is possible.

While the book does not talk about the growing numbers of people falling in the trap, my sense is that we need to do more prevention than cure. The book could serve as a warning for young folks so they get a real honest picture of what has happened to others and what could happen to them.

5-0 out of 5 stars Tales of the Formerly High and Mighty
With prismatic insight and editing of interviews with prominent Americans in recovery, Stromberg and Merrill identify common influences in the backgrounds and expose the lessons learned by the valiant interviewees, in their own words.

The authors have enriched the genre that they created with their first two anthologies of famous people's demise and recovery from substance abuse and addiction. SECOND CHANCES is terser than its predecessors, but even more riveting. These 17 captivating stories easily evoke empathy especially among those interested in prevention and those working on recovery.

SECOND CHANCES should be in every school library, in the interset of preventing substance abuse, and everywhere people wanting recovery can absorb its message of encouragement and hope.

5-0 out of 5 stars Second Chances is inspiring and very readable
Second Chances is inspiring and extremely readable. It is a real page turner and while one can quickly read it, the stories give the reader pause. The rollercoaster journeys of the executives' lives, the shocking depths and over-achieving heights are thought provoking to say the least. Having barely digested those, the astounding recoveries are actually far more dramatic. To read story after story of individuals reaching spiritual serenity and mental comfort after such travails gives the reader hope that those goals are truly within reach for everyone willing to do the work needed. The obvious gratitude, humility, joy in being of service and living in the moment of these recovered business people is absolutely inspiring. In fact, their sense of gratitude seems to be contagious, I am delighted to have had the opportunity to have read the book and hopefully learn from their both good and bad examples. I strongly recommend this book. ... Read more

Product Description

From Korn's legendary bassist comes a no-holds-barred look at the extreme highs and drug-and-booze-fueled lows of the biggest heavy metal band of our era.

What have you got when you got the life?

From the time he was an infant, music was in Fieldy's bones. Leaving his small California town after high school with a guitar and little else, he joined Brian "Head" Welch, James "Munky" Shaffer, drummer David Silveria, and Jonathan Davis in L.A. and together they formed a band with a completely new sound. When Korn exploded, skyrocketing to the top and fronting the nu-metal phenomenon, Fieldy became a rock star and acted like one—as notorious for his hard-partying, womanizing, drug-abusing, bad-boy behavior as he was for his one-of-a-kind bass lines. He was unfaithful, abusive, mean, sometimes violent. Fieldy had the life. But it took the death of his father, a born-again Christian, from a mysterious illness to save the son from total destruction. Fieldy found God . . . and the best part of himself.

With never-before-seen photos, and never-before-heard stories, Got the Life is raw, candid, and inspiring—the ultimate story of rock and redemption.

3-0 out of 5 stars Three stars only cause I'm a Korn fan.....
First of all, why would Fieldy write this after former Korn pal'Head' wrote a much better believable book a few years ago? Maybe because he has a huge ego?!Not a very believable book, especially when I've seen a recent interview of him where he appears stoned and can't remember details of the book he wrote less than two years ago?
The reason I'm giving it three stars is I am a Korn fan, and the first half of the book was very interesting. What is even more interesting is his recollection of things versus 'Head's' Save me from Myself ' memoir which is much better written. My guess is that Fieldy is trying to prove something and has a huge ego....

5-0 out of 5 stars Saved my life
First off, I'd like to address all of the nay-sayers who criticize Trimpey of bashing A.A.

Trimpey's use of language in order to make his arguments against the 12-step movement basically preaches to the choir. This book, I believe, was intended for folks that already agree with his disdain against A.A-whether they've been active participants in the program or not.

That said, Trimpey outlines a very aggressive and common-sense approach to addiction recovery that is based in personal responsibility, power of will to want to quit (for whatever reasons they may be) and rationalization through a process that recognizes and thereby, defeats the "addictive voice" in its many guises. He then gives several tactics for defeating the "addictive voice" for good, leading one toward permanent sobriety- A.K.A "The Big Plan"

Unlike the 12-step recovery movement (we'll call this A.A for short!), RR and AVRT focuses on addressing and permanently resolving the most immediate problem, substance addiction, before questions of family issues, emotional trauma or other past problems come into play- issues that A.A argues must be addressed first before recovery can even be considered. RR argues that the ONLY reason a person drinks beyond their common sense is because of how good it feels. So simple, yet-so true.

Moreover, while the 12-step movement argues that one must face up to and deal with the issues that he/she believes lead up to his addiction in the first place, RR argues that securing permanent sobriety, independent of the recovery movement first will naturally lead the individual to want to address any underlying issues afterward. I can certainly agree and relate to this, as all I wanted to do was DRINK after attending a few A.A meetings and doing my 4th and 5th step work!

For those who have tried the 12-step recovery method and failed, this book is for you. I relapsed numerous times in A.A. However, I've been sober ever since the day I picked up this book. What a relief to know that I am in control of, and responsible for my drinking habits after all, and not a victim to a hypothetical "disease."

5-0 out of 5 stars Break free from the chains of the 12 Step Recovery Juggernaut
If you have an addiction and 12 step recovery is not working (or is not your cup of tea), try this! The disease concept of alcoholism is just that.....a concept; not medical fact.

5-0 out of 5 stars Rational Recovery deals with Irrational Behavior
This book takes a different approach to addictive and irrational behavior. Unlike AA, this book forces you to realize that you DO have control over your actions and how you think. You do not have to give up and pretend that you can't control yourself and therefore are a helpless victim in need of "other worldly" help. Basically, this book is better suited for Atheists or Agnostics, who do not believe that a "higher power" is going to stop them from their destructive behavior. The author convinces you that you can stop your destructive behavior when you change your thoughts and attitude. You are empowered to change when you begin to care more about your life, family, friends, and health, than about drugging yourself everyday to temporarily feel better. The author brings up issues that interfere with your recovery and how to overcome them. I have given copies of this book to friends and family who have had their lives changed for the better. We highly recommend this book!

Product Description
The face of addiction and alcoholism is a face that many have seen before -- it may be a celebrity, a colleague, or even a family member. And though the 12-step program by itself can often bring initial success, many addicts find themselves relapsing back into old ways and old patterns, or replacing one addiction with another. Author Darren Littlejohn has been there and back, and presents a complimentary guide for recovery to the traditional twelve-step program, out of his own struggles and successes through the study of Zen and Tibetan Buddhism.

Working with the traditional 12-Step philosophy, the author first shares his own life path, and how he came to find the spiritual solace that has greatly enhanced his life in recovery. Then, he details out how his work integrating Buddhism into the traditional twelve-step programs validates both aspects of the recovery process. While being careful not to present himself as a Tibetan lama or Zen master, the author shows how each step -- such as admitting there is a problem, seeking help, engaging in a thorough self-examination, making amends for harm done, and helping other drug addicts who want to recover -- fits into the Bodhisattva path. This integration makes Buddhism accessible for addicts, and the 12 Steps understandable for Buddhists who may otherwise be at a loss to help those in need.

The 12-Step Buddhist is designed to be a complimentary practice to the traditional 12-step journey, not a replacement. While traditional twelve-step programs help addicts become sober by removing the drug of choice and providing a spiritual path, they rarely delve deep into what causes people to suffer in the first place. The integration of Buddhism with the traditional process provides the wisdom and meditations that can help addicts truly find a deep, spiritual liberation from all causes and conditions of suffering -- for good. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars A good start
I will start out by saying that its after 2am so any grammer errors are just going to have to be ok... This book is a good place for someone interested in buddhism who is "in the program" my sensei, and a guy who I have been reading up on lately the dalai lama describe in buddhism an almost agnostic angle... As it was described to me Buddhism does not give dharma talks on a creator God because they dont know, and I love that.. k. tanaka says when asked what do you as buddhist believe happens when you die?? and his answer was "THATS A GOOD QUESTION DONT WORRY ABOUT IT"perfect one day at a time answer... mr. littlejohns book is to date my absolutely favorite buddhism meets 12steps book on the market and i'll tell you why... this book integrates already accepted 12step beliefs with tibetan and tantric buddhism.. i would have loved to see some shin buddhism in the book as I have found that shin buddhism is almost identical to a "meeting" but none the less he writes as though he is speaking directly to you is clear and to the point... the most beneficial qualities in my opinion are the meditations he describes in the book... I actually reccomend this book to people that I know so i definitly would recomend it to those that i'll never have to meet ;-)

5-0 out of 5 stars 12 Steps Plus = Sage Advice
I am in recovery and picked up The 12 Step Buddhist thinking it looked interesting and different from most of the recovery literature I come across.I find Darren's perspective and advice honest and helpful.Have been in AA three years and I so identify with his conclusion that he needed more than just a 12 Step Program and the 12 Step Buddhist lays out so clearly the additional things he does to promote his own recovery. I need more too.I need therapy, medication and above all more in the way of a spiritual practice. And the 12 Step Buddhist is so inspiring that I have searched and actually found a local Buddhist sangha to investigate as a possibility to find that spiritual something I am looking for.I heartily recommend the 12 Step Buddhist to anyone on the recovery path (or who needs/wants to be) and to everyone else too. There's alot of wisdom shared.

5-0 out of 5 stars Practical wisdom for the addict
The 12 Step-Buddhist is a thoughtful and practical reflection on applying meditation to the 12 Steps. In fact, this book passes my book "diving" test for wisdom ...when I'm in need of divine wisdom, I pick up a book,, open to a random page and read where my finger falls.Everytime I've picked up the 12-Step Buddhist, I hear what I need to hear in the moment. For whatever reason, Littlejohn's writing has both the density and the intention that help me in moments of question. It has become a fixture in my recovery library.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Guide for Integrated Recovery
I read this book as an AA twelve-stepper just entering a Tibetan Buddhist community. This book was just what I needed to continue my recovery in an integrated way. I agree with author Littlejohn that the 12-step program is absolutely necessary for recovery, but may not be sufficient for everyone. This was true for me, as it was my "spiritual awakening" in early step work and interest in meditation that directed me towards Buddhism.

The 12-Step Buddhist clearly outlines how addicts can integrate Buddhist principles and practices into their recovery program. As addicts, we are very familiar with both attachment and suffering. Littlejohn explains how various Buddhist exercises address both of these conditions, allowing us to accept our powerlessness (i.e. the natural samsaric state of suffering) and then take measures (willingness and step work) to liberate ourselves from attachment (addiction). At least this is how I used this book to integrate my Buddhist practice and 12-step program.

Before I read this guide to enhanced recovery, I did not know how I could weave the fairly existential pillars of Buddhism into my very proactive step work program. These pages, however, greatly changed my perspective on recovery by showing different ways to go about living with addiction. The 12-Step Buddhist elucidates how meditation, self-examination, and compassion are some of the main skills one can get from Buddhist practice, and Littlejohn shows how these themes directly lend themselves to improved recovery and step work (such as being aware of our powerlessness over alcohol/addiction, taking moral inventories, and having service commitments).

I was/still am an addict looking for enhanced recovery, and I found just that in The 12-Step Buddhist. Littlejohn provides practices that are just suggestions, like the 12-steps; and if you are an addict looking for a more integrated, effective and powerful approach to AA step work and recovery, I greatly recommend this book and its suggestions.

Product Description

At last, a book that defines a new language for treating substance abuse in an increasingly culturally diverse population. Until now, therapists, counselors, and teachers who treat addiction within the context of the whole family have had to make do with outdated one-size-fits-all theories and treatment programs.

Bridges to Recovery is the first book to bring together experts from three major fields within psychotherapy -- family therapy, addiction counseling and multicultural treatment -- to provide a practical and flexible framework for working with families within their individual cultural contexts. Drawing upon case studies, clinical anecdotes and proven treatment methods, Bridges to Recovery provides practitioners with a unique insight into the individual cultural nuances that make addiction recovery a very personal journey.

Jo-Ann Krestan, co-author of the classic book The Responsibility Trap: A Blueprint for Treating the Alcoholic Family, and her contributors integrate the latest ideas and research to offer a foundation for addiction treatment that brings to the forefront the cultural thinking that affects alcohol and drug use/abuse among Native Americans, Jewish Americans, African Americans, West Indians, Asian Americans, Mexican Americans, Puerto Ricans and groups of European origin. This book will be an invaluable asset to teachers and students in clinical social work, psychology and substance abuse counseling programs, setting the standard for education and treatment at the beginning of the 21st century. ... Product Description
Barb Rogers' book begins with the tragic death of her teenage son, Jon, and delves into the horror that was her life to that point. Due to a home life fraught with substance and emotional abuse, Barb found herself bottomed out more than once, and homeless along the way.

"When asked in early recovery if I knew any prayers, the one I could think of was the child's nighttime prayer, 'Now I lay me down to sleep.'As I thought of it, I recalled the long nights when I simply wanted to go to sleep and never wake up."

Barb learned most of her life lessons through pain, tragedy, and addiction. This is not a glamorous book, it is real and it is raw. It is not about survival of the fittest, but the weak, the hopeless, the helpless, the truly addicted, not only to substances, but to drama, anger, excuses, and justifications.

She describes how she got to her lowest point, just what it was, and how and why she finally reached out to a 12-step program for help. She shows the reader what it's really like to survive, to stay clean and sober, and find a way to the other side.Recovery was one of the most difficult things she ever did, but "worth every effort I put out."

Barb Rogers would be the first to tell you she's not special--she's led a hard life, and she tells her story well and with humor--readers--addicts or not, but especially addicts--are going to find the kind of gritty inspiration, that if Barb can do it so can they, that will inspire life changes. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars If I Die Before I Wake: A Memoir of Drinking and Recovery
Barb Rogers proves, that no matter what obstacles you face, you can get sober. Few people have been through the abuse, loss, and pain that she has been through. While I did feel my heart breaking many times as I read her story, she doesn't portray herself as a victim. She writes with such honesty, not only with her readers, but with herself. Barb successfully lays out her progress through AA, detailing the internal struggles that happen during recovery. This is an important book for anybody working toward sobriety. Barb shows us that life can turn around, that we can learn from the past and move forward, and that there is life after addiction! Way to go Barb!

3-0 out of 5 stars Harrowing.
No one should have to suffer this much. After the death of her teenage son (due indirectly to his own substance abuse), Barb Rogers hits her own bottom. Without much of a will to live, she somehow manages to pull herself back from the brink of total destruction.

This memoir traces her downward spiral, and her climb back to the land of the living, inch by inch. With the help of AA and a few people whom she counts on in good times and bad, Rogers learns that there can be happiness on the other side of despair.

4-0 out of 5 stars Searing tale of eventual recovery
I am an alcohol and drug counselor. I have been in this profession for years. I am always excited to read a new book about someone's recovery from alcohol and drugs. This is one of those great books that makes you stop and think about your own life.Barb R., the author; has been through a lot.Neglect, molestation, an unwanted pregnancy, numberous marriages, and deaths throughout her life. This is the story of her determination to become sober.Sober now for 20 + years, this story is inspirational to hear, and a must read for any woman considering recovery from alcohol and drugs.

As I was reading this book, I was consistently reminded of another memoir I have recently read; "Potato chips for breakfast.""Potato chips" deals more with severe family dysfunction that leads to abuse and dependence; while "If I die before I wake" deals more with the positives of recovery.Barb R. deals more with the positive support through AA she has received since deciding to take the first steps to recovery more so than the author of "Potato chips," who just discusses her recovery from alcohol or other drugs in the last chapter of the book (and spends more time discussing the horrors of her home life that led to her using in the first place).

My only fault with the book is that Barb jumps around in time a great deal.At the beginning of the book, she has suffered a signifigant loss that led to a very real relapse. Then the book jumps back in time to her childhood and teenage years, in which she was pregnant and abandoned by her new husband just after they were married. Then the book jumps back to the signifigant loss, and eventually meeting of someone who helps her get into AA and recover.I had a hard time with all the jumps back and forth in time, and I think the story would have been more effective if told in a more straightforward manner. If I could change something about this book, this is what I would change.

Barb owns up to her addiction, and the ways she manipulated others around her when she was addicted. As I mentioned before she has suffered signifigant losses (I don't want to ruin the story so I don't want to tell too much to the reader) and she admits that she enjoyed the attention initially the losses provoked in others. The author also owns up to the fact that she left a lot to be desired as a parent to her son Jon.Many people, in recovery for years that I know, still cannot see themselves as a bad parent when they were using drugs and alcohol like Barb can.For this I commend her.

5-0 out of 5 stars Insightful
I found Empowering Your Sober Self an insightful look into alcoholism. Having primarily been familiar with the 12 Step model for recovery, this book serves to educate those who do not wish to follow the 12 Step Program's more religious path. I found the information on genetics interesting. The book doesn't "AA bash", like other alternative programs seem to, but offers up honest criticisms that make sense for those not religiously inclined. I did think a few of the suggestions for getting sober initially, a bit trite and superficial, however, over all I would recommend this book to those with established sobriety, seeking a more broad-minded path to follow.

5-0 out of 5 stars Of Exceptional Importance
Empowering Your Sober Self is a book whose importance is almost impossible to overestimate. The author has two basic goals. The first is to point out the many weaknesses of the 12-step approach to alcohol/drug addiction recovery. He does this several ways. He discusses the religious background of the originator of AA. Because Bill W. was able to overcome his addiction to alcohol by an experience of religious conversion (for 80 years institutionalized in AA/NA twelve step programs), a one size fits all is the hallmark of the vast majority of alcohol/drug treatment inpatient and outpatient programs. The author points out statistics and anecdotal reports that no more than 5% of patients respond to the 12 step approach. Anyone who has been in a 12 step program well knows the rigidity of this approach.
Second, Nicolaus puts forward a new much more flexible approach to maintaining sobriety. Group support for sobriety is the hallmark of this new approach (Called LifeRing). Importantly there is a relapse prevention/sobriety maintainance manual developed by LifeRing called Recovery by Choice: Living and Enjoying Life Free of Alcohol and DrugsWorkbook.See lifering.or for more information on this extremely important new approach to the treatment of alcohol/drug addiction. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Older version
Purchased this book and one I thought was the text to go along with workbook.Turns out, this one is just the older version, there is no separate workbook. Wish I would have known. Am sending it back, or will look to sell to used book store.

4-0 out of 5 stars Help for sexual addiction
It is becoming increasingly important for counsellors and psychotherapists to educate themselves about the issue of Sexual Addiction, which can be defined as out-of-control and damaging sexual behaviour in relation to Internet sex, prostitution, telephone sex, multiple affairs etc. Modern society provides a huge range of options for artificially enhanced, relatively impersonal sexual stimulation, and in our counselling practices we are more frequently meeting clients who may be addicted in some of these areas.

I recommend this new 2nd edition of Carnes' book as an introduction to the subject. Carnes has been the field leader in Sexual Addiction counselling since publishing "Out of the Shadows" in 1983, and the present book accessibly summarises his thinking about the problem, along with approaches for helping those who may be struggling with it. The main addition since the 1st edition is a more detailed exploration of the growing phenomenon of Cybersex (Internet sex) addiction.

Having been involved in the development of addiction treatment/recovery in the USA for many years, Carnes' thinking is a blend of influences taken from 12-Step programmes such as Alcoholics Anonymous and Sex & Love Addicts Anonymous, from Cognitive-Behavioural techniques such as written inventories and challenging core beliefs, and from relevant neurobiological findings. He has a deep understanding of the nature of Addictive Behaviours over and above the familiar example of Chemical Dependency, and his key contribution to the field may be his description of the Sexual Addiction Cycle, where Preoccupation leads to Ritualisation, which leads to addictive Acting Out behaviours; the Pain arising from this acting out can then be numbed by further Preoccupation, which closes the self-perpetuating cycle.

Carnes is also known for his Tasks approach to recovery. In this book he focuses on what he sees as the first 7 recovery tasks:

1. Breaking through denial
2. Understanding addiction
3. Surrendering to the process
4. Limiting damage
5. Establishing sobriety
6. Ensuring physical integrity
7. Participating in a culture of support

In earlier books he included Reducing Shame, which he now leaves until the second phase of recovery. My own experience, and those of many other therapists working with the Centre for Sexual Addictions, is that it is important to address the issue of shame and self-hatred at an early stage. Clients may see themselves and their sexuality in a very negative light, perhaps partly due to the negativity towards sexuality which has been a part of Irish culture, and may be in danger of trying to force themselves into the opposite extreme of complete avoidance and denial of sexuality (Carnes is alert to this danger, calling it Sexual Anorexia, and he has written an important book on the subject, entitled "Sexual Anorexia: Overcoming Sexual Self-Hatred").

Perhaps the main strength of this book is that it can be useful to both therapist and client alike, and while I have never worked through the whole book with any client, we can together make productive use of some of the handouts/exercises/inventories (for instance, the Consequences Inventory).

Eoin Stephens is Director of Education & Training at PCI College, and at the Centre for Sexual Addictions (www.csa-addictions.ie), a division of the Institute for Behavioural & Mental Health (www.ibmh.info).

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing
This author (Patrick Carnes) is the most knowledgable person on the topic of Sexual Addiction. This book is good for people who like to have a workbook. There are a lot of quizzes and journaling places, so you can really get to the bottom of your problems. If you are not going to want to journal or take quizzes in the book, I would reccommend some of his other books.I hear great things about his original "facing the shadow" book.I kind of wish I had bought that one actually. ...
