Book Description
This is a clinically-oriented investigation into the sources of stress, the forms of stress response and the current array of treatment possibilities. An outgrowth of the American Psychological Association's Task Force on Psychiatric Therapies, it brings together contributions from many of the country's leading psychiatrists who possess expertise in the various syndromes associated with human stress. Book Description
Pathological reactions to adverse life events are frequent. However, ithas become increasingly clear that current clinical descriptions anddiagnostic classifications, which subsume all such reactions under termssuch as PTSD or reactive and adjustment disorder, are inadequate. Onewidely seen type of pathological reaction can be classified asPosttraumatic Embitterment Disorder (PTED). Like PTSD, this disorder ischaracterized not by a particular type of stressful events, but by adistinct psychological process (experiences of injustice and violation ofbasic beliefs) and by a highly specific psychopathological profile(embitterment and intrusions). While the incidence of PTSD rises in timesof danger, such as war, PTED is seen more frequently in times of societalchanges which force people to cope with reorganizations of their lives and prospects. The symptoms of PTED can be very severe, chronic,life-threatening (because of suicidal and/or homicidal fantasies), andhard to treat, and often result in disability in almost all areas of life. This book provides the first comprehensive description of PTED. Theauthors first summarize the theoretical background for PTED and reactiveand adjustment disorders. They then describe the psychological processesinvolved in coping with insults, humiliation, and injustice. Data on theepidemiology of PTED in the general population and patient groups arereported. Diagnostic criteria, diagnostic interviews, and self-ratingscales are presented. Finally, promising and innovative avenues fortreating these patients are described, based on new concepts from wisdompsychology. A highly practical Appendix includes diagnostic checklists and tools for treatment planning with PTED patients, suitable for use by bothresearchers and clinicians. This ground-breaking book is of interest toresearchers and clinicians working in the fi eld of posttraumatic andadjustment disorders, as well as to forensic psy ... Read more

Book Description
"Carvounis reviews the debt-servicing problems of developing countries, focusing on the experience of nine cases, mostly in Latin America. He stresses the adverse impact on the development prospects of these countries resulting from the adjustment policies that they have been required to pursue. Carvounis criticizes the current austerity-oriented approach to restoring orderly debt-servicing, maintaining that his emphasis is leading to severe economic, political, and social problems within these countries. He argues that the economic capacity and political will of borrowing countries to continue this route is dissipating." Choice ... Read more

Book Description
This volume provides a forum for interdisciplinary perspectives in the emerging discipline of developmental psychopathology. The goal is to elucidate the four central principles of this discipline: the application of classical developmental theory in work with atypical populations; the delineation of insights from atypical populations that inform developmental theory; the integration of methods and theories from various social science disciplines; and the description of implications for interventions and social policy. So far, there have been few efforts to present each of these principles of developmental psychopathology within a single, unifying framework. Illustrating these central principles across a range of state-of-the-art research programs, this unique collection of papers will be invaluable for students, current researchers, and clinicians seeking a sound understanding of this rapidly emerging social science discipline.Download Description
