Book Description

Attention Deficit Disorder: Practical Coping Methods eliminates the confusion common among professionals attempting to treat this disorder and family members affected by it by answering questions about ADDin a logical and systematic manner. The aim is to approach treatment from a whole perspective, using medication as well as coping mechanisms to address the specific problems and understand the emotional issues that may prevent the child, adolescent, or adult from working to his or her full potential.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must-Have
There are three books about ADD you ought to own (four, if you're a woman.)This is most definetely one of them. Many, if not most books about ADD are helpful but the information is all the same.If you've read one "all about ADD" book, you're probably read them all. This one is very different and is equally helpful for ADD adults and parents/teachers of ADD kids and teens. It's worth every penny and then some.
(The other books I found to be extremely helpful and way above-average in useful content are:
"Driven To Distraction" & "Delivered From Distraction" by Dr. John Ratey and "ADD & Women" by Sari Solden.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book on a very confusing condition
Personally speaking, I can't understand why this book is not utilized by more clinicians. Being diagnosed with ADD myself, I've read a lot of the ADD literature. The only other book that compares to this one is the book by Dr. Daniel Amen which uses SPECT brain scans in order to demonstrate that their are real physical abnormalities associated with ADD and ADHD. This book by Fisher and Beckley does the same thing except from a clinical / neuropsychological perspective.

In addition, I feel that this book makes a valuable contribution that is ignored by other leading researchers such as Dr. Russell Barkley. This contribution is the distinction between the hyperactive and non-hyperactive forms of ADD. This is a widely ignored fact which is crucial in deciding what is the best course of treatment, and I can't understand why most researchers in the field ignore it. After reading this book, I only wish that more clinicians had an understanding of the different subtypes described here, and that the psychiatrists who compose the DSM-IV would pay more attention to it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Most Comprehensive Source of Information on ADD
This book has taught me more about ADD than all the other books I have read combined. For anyone diagnosed with ADD, thinks they have ADD, or is close to someone with ADD, this book will deepen your understanding for what is really going on in the brain of an ADD individual. This book armed me with the information to understand myself better and to better inform my doctor so that he can understand me better. The authors explain the scientific reasons for ADD in its complex detail in a way that can be easily comprehended by any reader. The authors also address a subdivision of ADD that most books ignore and continue to address the vast differences that individuals within different groupings may experience. This is a great book to keep handy as a resource on ADD.

3-0 out of 5 stars Useful information for those who know they need the info!
Useful information for ADD folks and those who love them. The challenge, of course, is getting the ADD folks to focus on the timely info before they get involved with life: jobs, marriages, interpersonalrelationships......Book is a good baseline from which the non-ADD personcan coach loved ones. ... Description:
The study explores relationships between preschoolers' separation anxiety and adjustment to kindergarten and their mothers' separation anxiety and levels of differentiation. It also examines the universality of several theoretical and clinical notions in Bowen's [Bowen, M. (1978). Family therapy in clinical practice. Aronson: New York] Family Systems Theory, by testing them in the Eastern-collectivist Israeli-Druze society. The main findings were positive correlations between mothers' and children's separation anxiety, as well as negative correlations between children's separation anxiety and maternal differentiation (for total DSI score and for emotional cutoff), so that lower differentiation and higher cutoff were associated with higher levels of anxiety. Another interesting finding was that teachers perceived the children of Druze working mothers as having more problematic behaviors than non-working mothers, pointing to poorer adjustment to kindergarten. Results suggest that a crucial balance of separation and closeness provides an optimal context for meeting the needs and promoting the healthy development of both mother and child. The present study is the first to indicate relations between mothers' differentiation and preschoolers' separation anxiety among Druze participants, partially supporting the universality of Bowen's theory ''in all families and in all cultures'' [Kerr, M., & Bowen, M. (1988). Family evaluation. New York: Norton, p. 202]. ... Read more
