Book Description

In Repressed Spaces Paul Carter tours the cultural history of agoraphobia, the fear of open space. Its symptoms were first described in The Anatomy of Melancholy (1621) by Robert Burton, the British scholar and writer, although it wasn’t until 1871 that Carl Otto Westphal coined the term to describe several of his patients who experienced severe anxiety when walking through streets or squares. There have been many attempts to explain and treat the condition: critics of modernization have linked it to bad city planning; psychoanalysts, calling it "street panic", have blamed it on the Oedipus complex; psychiatrists have tied it to existential insecurity and describe it as the fear of places or situations that have triggered panic attacks. Freud believed that agoraphobia, like all phobias, was part of an "anxiety neurosis" and had a sexual origin.Taking as his starting-point the fact that Freud himself was agoraphobic, and analyzing the way people have negotiated open spaces from Greek and Roman times to the present day, Paul Carter finds that "space fear" ultimately results from the inhibition of movement. Along the way, the author asks why Freud repressed his agoraphobia, and examines literature, the work of architects and theorists – including Le Corbusier, Walter Benjamin and R. D. Laing – artists such as Munch, Lapique and Giacometti, and the German "street films" of the 1920s. He concludes by proposing a new way of regarding open space, a new "poetics of agoraphobia", one that is sensitive to the agoraphobe’s point of view and provides lessons for architects and urban planners today.

Description:
Twenty-six to forty percent of individuals suffering from panic disorder with agoraphobia (PDA) do not benefit significantly from cognitive-behavior therapy. Marital problems are among risk factors that may explain this limited impact. Some studies suggest that PDA treatment outcome is related to the couple's ability to communicate and solve problems during and after treatment. It may be also useful to further clarify the interplay of marital interpersonal variables with PDA severity before any intervention. This study aims at specifying the links between PDA symptom severity on the one hand and, on the other hand, marital adjustment, attachment style and personal problem-solving skills in both spouses. Results obtained from a group of 67 PDA patients (44 women and 23 men) and their partners showed that some PDA symptoms or comorbid depressive symptoms were more severe when both spouses independently scored low on problem-solving skills or marital adjustment, and when attachment style of PDA patients was insecure. Marital adjustment and difficulties in problem-solving, more specifically, avoidance of problem-solving activities in PDA patients, were the best predictors of PDA symptom severity. In light of these findings, a more complete program of problem-solving and acceptance strategies could be developed as part of a cognitive-behavior treatment of PDA. Other theoretical and clinical implications are discussed. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Meditation really helps
I've read quite a few books on panic attacks and anxiety. I found this book to be really helpful. It tells us that sometimes doctors, psychiatrists, and drugs are not enough to help us combat this disorder. Sometimes we just need to meditate and something happens inside of us that stills our minds and bodies, something that all the logic in the world cannot do. I am still meditating to this day and it works.

5-0 out of 5 stars Self-Help and a Terrific Story
Pauline's book is extremely helpful.
She tells her story in a warm and
compassionate manner. You realize
there are other people going through
the same things.I have MANY
books on anxiety--hers is a favourite.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is such a Wonderful Book!
The author Pauline McKinnon overcame agoraphobia and panic disorder using a unique form of meditation which she calls stillness meditation. She was housebound with agoraphobia and became completely cured usingmeditation. In the book she describes her whole journey. From her first panic attack to becoming completely well. She also describes, in great detail, how to do stillness meditation and how long it will take to get well. Pauline McKinnon is also a psychotherapist. Another interesting note (not in the book): I have read that the actress Olivia Hussey (Romeo and Juliet) used and uses meditation to keep her agoraphobia in check. ... Read more
