5-0 out of 5 stars Handy guide by highly experienced authors
This is a great guide to the basics of first aid in the mountains, whether it is a climbing or backing situation. For a fairly short book (170 pages or so) it covers a lot. Combine this with the chapter on first aid and alpine rescue in "Mountaineering the freedom of the Hills" (same publisher) and you have about everything you need."Medicine of the Outdoors" by Paul S. Auerbach, M.D.is more complete on many medical aspects, if you are looking for yet more information.

4-0 out of 5 stars Safety above all else
Although this book may not cover EVERY detail about back country survival, it definitely gives some good pointers whether a person is in a large group or a small one.

Mountaineering is a dangerous sport, and the tactics andprocedures in this book can be applied to every day situations aswell.

This is a definite must-read for anyone who is responsible foranother life -- from trail guides to backpackers to parents to babysitters-- it is a must-have for every household! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Step 1 Review Book, ALL YOU NEED!
This is a great book and is ALL YOU NEED, in addition to a QUESTION BANK.If you put in the time to learn this material and learn from your mistakes on missed questions on your question bank, you will do well on the actual exam. What I did was after reviewing each section, taking practice sets of questions and writing the things I missed into the margins in the appropriate sections of the book. Reviewing the material several times is key. I have very short attention span and probably did not study quite as hard as many of my classmates but with this book and a question bank I scored ~230. Good Luck!

5-0 out of 5 stars #1 resource for USMLE Step 1
This is THE book for preparing for the USMLE Step 1.Its new systems-based organization make it an amazing product for reviewing for the test.Write in it and refer to it as you go through your first and second years in medical school, and you will be glad to have done it.

This is a great comprehensive review that gives you information in the most concise and easy to remember format.Be sure to check the associated web page for the errata though.

So far, this was the book highly recommended by all my friends who have taken the USMLE step 1. Its a good reviewer only if you've read the basic books while you were studying in class, but if you dont understand the basics, this might not be the book you should start with. The outline form is awesome especially for your last days of review before the exam.

3-0 out of 5 stars Okay, not a lot of material
The book has a great outline of information that you need to know for the step I, however, it doesn't have a large amount of actual review material. The book does tell you good resources taht you can use to find it though.

5-0 out of 5 stars A rare focus on the social and economic context
This is the only book-length exploration of the social and economic context of the the HIV/AIDS epidemics. What comes through is that the authors are not journalists who dashed off a book on AIDS, but longtime researchers, with world-ranging experience.

WHile well documented, it is readable. The next college level course I teach on contemporary issues will surely include this as required reading. My students will thank me for it.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best comprehensive treatment of HIV/AIDS
Tony Barnett and Alan Whieside have done a fantastic job of placing the issue of HIV/AIDS within a comprehensive context. It is easy to read, well researched, thoughtful in it's analysis, and comprehensive - that is, it places the pandemic amidst the global forces that are affecting it and which must be understood if we're to successfully turn the tide.I am recommending it to many of my colleagues! It is the best book I have read to-date on the most challenging crisis facing the human family. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Pretty good
This book helped me study for the NBDE.It presents a very concise outline of the material on the exam with some helpful mnemonics and diagrams. Most every page has one or two notes in the margins with facts needed to answer released NBDE questions.

The content covered by the book seemed to coincide pretty well with about 75% of the exam. However, this book is probably best used as an outline to remind you of the important topics. If there are topics that you don't remember well you may need to look them up in a more comprehensive book. This is especially true if you want to ace the test.

This first edition was a little rough with a lot of typographical error, but on the plus side the factual content seemed accurate. The dental anatomy section provided a lot of help, especially a simple way to remember eruption times, but I would say that it was very incomplete. You will need additional dental anatomy study materials.

All in all this book was worth the price in terms of the amount of help it provided me.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent resource
First Aid for the NBDE part 1 is at the top of my list when it comes to study aides for the national boards. The guide covers all aspects of the exam, as well as includes figures and diagrams referenced from other commonly used textbooks that are vital for success on the exam. The organization is its best feature, whereas the outlined format is easy to follow. As for the text, it is very concise, yet explains well enough the intricate detail of each topic that one may be hard-pressed to spend time reading through other reference materials. A MUST HAVE for any dental student seeking success on the NBDE part 1.... ... Read more

Book Description
From one of our most widely read, award-winning journalists – comes the powerful, unputdownable story of the very human cost of a global pandemic of staggering scope and scale. It is essential reading for our times.

In 28, Stephanie Nolen, the Globe and Mail’s Africa Bureau Chief, puts a human face to the crisis created by HIV-AIDS in Africa. She has achieved, in this amazing book, something extraordinary: she writes with a power, understanding and simplicity that makes us listen, makes us understand and care. Through riveting anecdotal stories – one for each of the million people living with HIV-AIDS in Africa – Nolen explores the effects of an epidemic that well exceeds the Black Plague in magnitude. It is a calamity that is unfolding just a 747-flight away, and one that will take the lives of these 28 million without the help of massive, immediate intervention on an unprecedented scale. 28 is a timely, transformative, thoroughly accessible book that shows us definitively why we continue to ignore the growth of HIV-AIDS in Africa only at our peril and at an intolerable moral cost.

28’s stories are much more than a record of the suffering and loss in 28 emblematic lives. Here we meet women and men fighting vigorously on the frontlines of disease: Tigist Haile Michael, a smart, shy 14-year-old Ethiopian orphan fending for herself and her baby brother on the slum streets of Addis Ababa; Alice Kadzanja, an HIV-positive nurse in Malawi, where one in six adults has the virus, and where the average adult’s life expectancy is 36; and Zackie Achmat, the hero of South Africa’s politically fragmented battle against HIV-AIDS.

28 also tells us how the virus works, spreads and, ultimately, kills. It explains the connection of HIV-AIDS to conflict, famine and the collapse of states; shows us how easily treatment works for those lucky enough to get it and details the struggles of those who fight to stay alive with little support. It makes vivid the strong, desperate people doing all they can, and maintaining courage, dignity and hope against insurmountable odds. It is – in its humanity, beauty and sorrow – a call to action for all who read it.

5-0 out of 5 stars One in a million
The introductory maps seize your attention."Adult prevalence of HIV /AIDS" on one page and the people represented in the "stories" on the opposite. There's a swath of dark shading across southwest Africa - that's "Over 20%".To the east, the shade is lighter - "15 - 20%", with two darker smudges labelled "Swaziland" and "Lesotho" - islands of tragedy. At the top, "5 - 15%" predominates, lower numbers hiding the intensity of conditions.Stephanie Nolen's subjects' names run across the other map - the individuals whose stories are related here.

The numbers often lead to "AIDS fatigue" - too many big numbers; surpassing our ability to grasp them. The millions of people infected with HIV/AIDS seem beyond comprehension. After consulting the various estimates, Nolen surmises about 28 million for Africa, approaching the entire population of Canada. Each day, something like 5500 will die of the effects of the infection - two-thirds the population of my community.Every day.All year long. The adage runs: "One death is a tragedy, one million deaths is a statistic."Yet, that "million" represents that many "ones", and each one has a story.Nolen gives us those stories, making one person represent a million others. It's a formidable burden for the afflicted and the writer alike, but Nolen's skill effectively allows the reader to take it all in measured doses.

The opening story is, appropriately, a woman. In Swaziland, women don't turn to activism. They were traditionally forbidden to wear pants until 2003 and the right to own property was only granted in 2006.The little nation has the last monarch in Africa - who has thirteen wives and a fleet of autos.Siphiwe Hlophe had borne children with a man who delayed marriage for years. The discovery that she carried the virus was devastating - it suggested she was immoral, when it was her husband who had been philandering. That situation is one of the AIDS' story social disasters. The infection carries the stigma of immorality, a view widespread throughout Africa - and the West.Traditional leaders, missionaries and even family members vilified the victims as "immoral". It was also deemed an affliction of the poor, a mistake leading to many stressful family situations.Siphiwe, transcended many of these issues by announcing her infection and launching an AIDS awareness programme.Nolen gives accounts of other activitists, including a "Miss HIV Stigma-Free".

The other group most affected by the virus is children - either by being orphaned or by infection at birth.Among the former is 14-year-old Tigist Haile Michael of Addis Ababa who is the sole support for a younger brother half her age.Regine Mamba isn't an orphan. At her age, the term is meaningless. But Regine knows about orphans. When Nolen first interviewed her, Regine had 13 of them - all their parents were AIDS victims - by the book's Epilogue, the number had risen to 18.These parentless children lack education, opportunity and exist on a bare subsistence level lacking any skills to provide for themselves or siblings.Across Africa the number of such children is estimated to have reached 14 million today. What is their future? One path, of course, is always open - at least to the girls.

Is it entirely disaster and is amelioration impossible? There are signs of hope for researchers, but one of those will likely raise a few eyebrows.Agnes Munyiva has three children who live across town from where she works.Seeing up to a dozen clients per day, her job makes her a high risk for HIV infection, but that's not the part she keeps from her children. She's a sex worker in a Nairobi suburb, and she's very special.Agnes is HIV immune, a physiological trait that has many, especially AIDS researchers, scratching their heads, but see her condition as a means leading to prevention. The number of immune sex workers is small, and conditions providing immunity vary. Can enough be studied carefully to derive some answers?Does Alice truly fit the "one in a million" status? In what may seem a departure from the theme, Nolen relates the sad story of Western pharmaceutical firms keeping the price of Anti-Retroviral Drugs [ARVs] out of reach of those needing them.Compounding this tragedy of corporate greed is the role of Western financial institutions such as the World Bank and International Monetary Fund to cripple the social services.Through Strategic Adjustment Plans [SAPs - one of the few truly indicative acronyms], Western investors demanded "downsizing" of government employees - read "teachers" and "nurses" - to pay off international debts, thousands were deprived of jobs.Lacking land and the skills to work it, those unemployed quickly became destitute.Add those to the young orphan girls and Alice readily becomes "one in a million".One of those will assuredly displace her from her hard mattress and mud-walled hut.

If the foundation of Alice's immunity, shared with a small number of Africa's prostitutes, can be unravelled, the chance of a vaccine increases. That's the quest of Uganda's Pontiano Kaleebu, who's been seeking that preventive step for years.Nolen's chapter on Pontiano is one of the most compelling of the collection. In it, Nolen explains how HIV/AIDS operates in the body, and why both prevention and cure are so difficult to achieve. While the vaccine remains elusive, the "cure" has made hesitant progress. But the drugs work only for a time, then a new form and schedule is required. That means testing, analysis, prescription, scheduling and instruction by health-care workers - many of whom were laid off.The drugs have to be available where and when needed at a price that people can afford. Not easily achieved in Sub-Saharan Africa.

As a Canadian in Africa, reporter for the Toronto Globe & Mail, Nolen is aware of how that nation prides itself on helping those in need.Accordingly, she offers a list of organizations providing that support for the suffering. Those 28 million are still living - minus today's 5500 - and their lives can be extended by ARV compounds.Nolen explains how you can help and what your help can achieve.[stephen a. haines - Ottawa, Canada

5-0 out of 5 stars A True Glimpse of Today's Africa
I read this great book last summer during my third visit to Africa. As the orphan coordinator of a sponsorship program for four secondary schools in southwest Uganda, I have first hand experience with the results of the AIDS epidemic.I found the stories to be not all death and dying as you might expect, but interesting and inspiring. The author is right on target in describing the current situation in Africa, from the descriptions of governments, religions, health care, and also the roadblocks to progress that long-held attitudes and lifestyles present.I gave this book to five family members at Christmas!

5-0 out of 5 stars "I don't think I comprehend..."
Graça Machel, wife of former South African President Nelson Mandela and, with him, long time activist in the fight against HIV/AIDS, said:"... we can't fill all the spaces that are left."Five and a half thousand people die in Africa every day of AIDS and related diseases, with an estimated 28 million people infected by the HIV virus. These figures are too overwhelming to comprehend and Stephanie Nolen's book opens an evocative window for us into the struggle, the suffering and the hope of ordinary Africans through 28 portraits. From her diverse and multi-year experience and research into the pandemic in a number of sub-Saharan Africa countries, she focuses on the individuals, their families and their circumstances, resulting in an intimate, sometimes heart wrenching, sometimes uplifting, yet always deeply moving and inspiring account of what HIV/AIDS has done and continues to do to Africans: to individuals, relations, communities and countries.

Each chapter starts with a photograph of the primary individual as she or he reveals the tragedy of their lives. Some of them Nolen met only a couple of times, others have become close friends. Her ability to convey their stories vividly and with great empathy brings us as reader not only close to the unique aspects of each "case", but assists our better appreciation of cultural and political traditions and realities in African societies. The critical components of the HIV/AIDS crisis unique to African countries are addressed within the narrative without losing the personal and emotional primacy of the subject matter.

For close to ten years, Nolen, a Canadian journalist for the Globe & Mail, based in South Africa, has been following the HIV/AIDS crisis all over the continent. She has visited families, health clinics, scientists, care centres for AIDS orphans, and activists' organizations. She has walked with health care providers among remote rural communities lacking any medicines, yet trying their best to comfort and help the sick. Stigmas still attached to the infection have meant that misconceptions flourish: those identified with it have been shunned, thrown out of their family's house and left to die. For a long time, testing positive for the virus was perceived by people as an automatic death sentence, resulting too often in changing behaviour patterns. Without any concrete knowledge of this "disease of many names" it robbed families of one young woman or man after another and villages in despair with the ever increasing number of orphans left behind.

Contrary to the long-held prevalent view in Africa as elsewhere - that HIV/AIDS is a disease of minorities and of the poor - Nolen demonstrates the fallacy of this perception that has cost many their lives needlessly.Poverty remains an important factor where nutrition is inadequate, education non-existent, and money for treatment and care is not available. Nolen discusses how traditional societal norms of behaviour still contribute to the persistence of high infection rates, in particular among women. Abstinence, promoted by international, in particular US, aid agencies as a primary method to reduce infections, is only rarely an acceptable option, Nolen contends. Anita in Mozambique stands for many: "None of it" she said, "was up to me". On the other side, there are young professionals, like Lydia in Uganda or Ibrahim in Nigeria, fully aware of their condition, that are still caring for others, lobbying and fighting for access to life prolonging ARVs (antiretroviral medication). What shines through all the stories, is determination and hope despite the odds, the courage, resolve and perseverance that the individuals show in the face of unimaginable obstacles.

A substantial number of books are available on HIV/AIDS and its devastating impact on African societies and demonstrating the need for cheap medicines and vaccines. The human costs in countries where the HIV infection rate may be as high as 30 or more percent is unimaginable in its devastation for generations to come. As Machel put it: "I don't think I comprehend the dimensions of the havoc, disruption, discontinuity". Nolen's book stands out for her insightful descriptions of the human costs as well as the its fluid integration into the stories of aspects of socio-economic conditions and up-to-date science research surrounding the pandemic. Yet, she never loses the focus on the human beings who she got to know and who candidly shared with her their life's story. If you think you can only cope with one book on this subject, read this one. [Friederike Knabe]

5-0 out of 5 stars All you need to know about AIDS in Africa
Stephen Lewis, the former UN Special Envoy for AIDS in Africa, called Stephanie Nole's 28 Stories of AIDS in Africa, "the best book ever written about AIDS".I must admit that I was skeptical- how could a relatively short book of stories encapsulate this massive epidemic?By the time I'd finished the third of 28 stories, I'd changed my mind.

Nolen successfully uses 28 human experiences of HIV/AIDS, gathered over years of reporting on the issue, to tackle each aspect of the pandemic: orphans, access to treatment, medical research, AIDS in conflict zones and within the military, at-risk groups such as truck drivers and sex workers, African political and international humanitarian approaches to HIV, experiences of children, women, elites, couples, families, activists, and the poorest of the poor. Her approach left me more knowledgable, and intermittently heartbroken and ready for action. The book critically examines the role of each actor in the pandemic, from international to local in the present and since the first recorded infection. It emphasizes the complexity of the crisis, most importantly its intrinsic links to poverty, as well as including a vital section on how you can help.

Effectively, Nolen has written a book that provides an overview of the political, historical, cultural, and economic realities of HIV/AIDS in Africa while constantly drawing the reader back to one fundemental point: HIV/AIDS is first and foremost a human issue. She quotes Nelson Mandela (he is the main character in the 27th story), "Overcoming poverty is not a gesture of charity; it is an act of justice" (353).

As someone recently embedded in the fight against HIV/AIDS (I am currently writing my undergraduate thesis on prevention programs, and have just returned from 10 months working with two grassroots HIV/AIDS organizations in Ethiopia), I would recommend this to laypeople and experts alike!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Book That Will Move You -- To Action
It sounds weird to say it, but I couldn't put this book down. All the stories are so compelling and so well-written. Nolen doesn't tell one story over and over, but tells many stories using very diverse people. Her courage is obvious: she hung out with a long-haul trucker, a sex worker, and people with AIDS who had only days left to live. I was especially intrigued by the stories of the infected ones who became powerful advocates. What this book left me with wasn't the sense that "these people are pathetic victims we richer folk need to help," but that these are resilient, strong, interesting human beings suffering a horrid situation with little or no resources, and we should help them help themselves. As a journalist, I'm in awe of Stephanie Nolen in every respect. As a reader, I'm compelled to respond. I highly recommend the related website, [...], where you can read about each of the 28 briefly, and see a video interview of several. The website and book both give many ideas for how you can help. Start by reading a book that could change your life. ... Read more

Product Description
"This writing is extraordinary and unique. First, because it was written by a man whose wife had an affair. Most first-person writing about affairs has been from women. It contains some of the rawest honesty about the pain of an affair that I have ever read. It provides a great deal of hard-earned wisdom about the whole issue of affairs, particularly in healing from the devastation. I highly recommend this book to anyone who truly wants to know what it's like to deal with a spouse's affair - and to learn practical ways to recover and heal."

Peggy Vaughan, author of The Monogamy Myth

Written over a period of two years and based on his personal experience and those of over 100 others who have suffered the betrayal of a partner's adultery, the author has captured the essence of the pain, anguish and inestimable psychological effects of a partner's affair.

From his own struggle to survive and recover, the author shares with those who are trying to recover, suggestions for survival, recovery and ways to deal with the many adverse personal effects of betrayal. Self esteem, trust, anger, depression, obsessing and more are all looked at and the reader is provided with practical suggestions for overcoming these issues.

Readers and other authors have praised the work for its straightforward and simple approach. The author has taken the subject out of the theoretical and gets down to earth with reality, personal understanding and insights gained through experience that only those who have "been there" could ever know.

"I have just finished reading your book. I'm really impressed and emotionally stirred. It is a great book and I believe it will help many people I thought the book was brilliant, and probably one ofthe most helpful resources that can fall into the hands of a betrayed spouse."

4-0 out of 5 stars Great to read when first discovering an affair
Well written, great for the first few days. Not recommended well into reconciliation process.More like an immediate band-aid.

5-0 out of 5 stars Completely honest
I ordered a few books after my husband had an emotional affair. This one is really REAL and totally RAW!The author is so honest, it makes you feel like you are talking to a friend, that understands everything you are going through.I really recommend this book or anyone affected by an affair.Reading does help focus your mind. It is written by a male, but it is good for either party.

5-0 out of 5 stars Knows exactly how I feel!
This is a great book for one who is cheated on.It made me feel not so alone. It helped a great deal in sorting out my feelings and made me realize that this was not my fault!

5-0 out of 5 stars comforting
If your reason for reading this book is to find the answers you won't but there are plenty of suggestions to help you on your way to recovery.I found that you could open to any page in the book and find something that you could relate to.It is comforting to know that although you may feel you are in this situation alone that many, many others have been there and come through it okay. The book provides a link to others who have had the same rough roads as you and still survived.

4-0 out of 5 stars First Aid
I appreciated the rawness that the author uses relaying the experiences that he has gone through. It's very "real".I differ in opinion on the topic of forgiveness - Biblically we are commanded to - not for the benefit of the offender but so we can be and live freely.I believe unforgiveness binds us to the person we have not forgiven.I also liked the links to helpful websites and recommended resources. Some very good concepts that I could easily identify with - the obsessive thought cycle being one......may contain language that some may find offensive - but he didn't censor in an effort to keep it real. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars AAmerican Red Cross First Aid: Responding to Emergencies
This is an Excellent manual for teachers of First Aid

4-0 out of 5 stars A Real Look at Emergencies
This book is full of very realistic photos depicting first aid emergencies.I used it in a college CPR and First Aid course.I recommend it highly as a supplement to any first aid class or training. It really helped me.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent, excellent book
I'm currently enrolled in an 18-week First Aid: Responding to Emergencies course at my college and this is the textbook we're using. This thing is packed full of information! Everything from how to care for victims of various injuries and illnesses to life threatening conditions. Lots of articles in it-- I'm learning stuff I never gave second thoughts to before. It's very readable and it presents the information in a well-organized way. Lots of photos to show how different procedures are done (although nothing replaces firsthand practice). The end-of-chapter study guides are also extremely helpful. If you take a Red Cross First Aid/CPR course, keep this book after you finish the class-- it's great to refer back to.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Single Source for Citizen-Responder First Aid!
This ISBN is for the latest THIRD EDITION of the American Red Cross manual, First Aid: Responding to Emergencies. This is the Third Edition, with a 2001 copywright, is Emergency Cardiac Care (ECC) 2000-compliant for CPR and Airway Management techniques.BE CAREFUL!OLDER EDITIONS ARE NO LONGER USED IN RED CROSS COURSES AND THEY DON'T MEET THE NEWER STANDARDS.

This is the standard First Aid text used in many college, high school, and para-professional/workplace courses taught by the American Red Cross. It is designed in modular format and combines and expands upon several courses you may also take seperately:
- Citizen-Responder First Aid
- Adult/Child/Infant CPR
- Preventing Disease Transmission/Bloodborne Pathogens Training
- First Aid, When Help is Delayed (the rules change when help is more than 30 minutes away from the scene)
- First Aid to People With Special Needs
- Emergency Childbirth (Lay Responder)

Not only is this a great textbook, but compared to many other current Red Cross manuals, this one makes a great desk (or in-vehicle) reference, and has many articles and facts that are not taught in the classes.

If you haven't taken a First Aid course lately, the CPR techniques have changed and the skill sheets in this book present these new methods at a glance.

Good Samaritan Laws vary by state, but they all require a prudent Citizen-Responder to act within the level of his or her training and the immunity from civil lawsuit that the knowledge in this book can convey to you is worth its price many times over (not to mention your ability to make a positive difference at the scene of an accident or a disaster).

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent introduction for citizen responders
There is a more-recent edition (2001) that is used in the Red Cross course, which is not listed on Amazon as of January 2004. Get it at the Red Cross directly.

Responding to emergencies is something most people do rarely if ever, but when faced with a life-threatening injury to someone else, how would you respond?

I recommend that everyone get the basic Red Cross certifications; this book is the text for the most-advanced of the three courses:

1. CPR and AED (AED: automatic external defibrillator)
2. First Aid and CPR/AED
3. Responding to Emergencies

Doing this will take all of three days out of your life, but it will prepare you for the rest of your life by teaching you what to do when seconds can mean the difference between life and death.

This book is great by itself; it is superb as the text supplement to a Red Cross certification. ... Read more

Book Description
Foreign aid is now a $100bn business and is expanding more rapidly today than it has for a generation. But does it work? Indeed, is it needed at all?Other attempts to answer this important question have been dominated by a focus on the impact of official aid provided by governments. But today possibly as much as 30 percent of aid is provided by Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs), and over 10 percent is provided as emergency assistance. In this first-ever attempt to provide an overall assessment of aid, Roger Riddell presents a rigorous but highly readable account of aid, warts and all. iDoes Foreign Aid Really Work?/i sets out the evidence and exposes the instances where aid has failed and explains why. The book also examines the way that short-term political interests distort aid, and disentangles the moral and ethical assumptions that lie behind the belief that aid does good. The book concludes by detailing the practical ways that aid needs to change if it is to be the effective force for good that its providers claim it is. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An indispensable reference book for dog and cat owners
The second worst thing that can happen to your pet is for him to get sick or hurt; the truly worst thing is for you as the pet owner to be totally unprepared when accident or misfortune strikes. This book covers all the basics of first aid care for dogs and cats, from cuts and bee stings to convulsions, choking, and traumatic, life-threatening injuries.Steps to take in any given situation are laid out one at a time, and a number of very helpful illustrations make all of the information as direct and understandable as it can be.The book is arranged alphabetically by first aid topic, so you can always find the information you need quickly and easily. You really don't even have to read the book.Just having it close at hand when something happens to your pet can make a real difference; it can even help save your loyal companion's life.I would recommend reading the book, though, or at least glancing through it.You can learn important warning signs to watch for in your pet's behavior and help catch a problem in its early stages. In cases of real emergency, knowing what not to do can be just as important as knowing what you should do.You would do well to follow the precautionary suggestions the book describes--putting together a pet first aid kit, for example.By no means can or should this book take the place of professional veterinary care, a point which the text emphasizes, but it can help keep your pet healthy and happy.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must have for any pet lover.
This book is a great help to me when my pets have any bumps or scratches. It is a wonderful source of first aid information that any pet lover should have.

5-0 out of 5 stars Pet book is paws up
This book is so helpful. I think every dog and cat owner should have one. It is so easy to use and can save yourself a lot of money in Vet visits if you're like me and worry about every little thing that might be wrong with your 'baby." I like the glossary and illustrations. I'm getting one as a Christmas gift for all the dog owners in my family. You can't beat it for $8.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic reference volume by public health veterinarian
I couldn't agree more with the previous comment. I would only add that Dr. Bobbie Mammato, the author, conveys her wealth of experience in emergency veterinary care and public health, and makes thisan extremely readable and useful text. In fact, why isn't Dr. Mammato credited as the author on your Web site

5-0 out of 5 stars A must for every family with a cat or dog!
Would you know what to do if your cat or dog had an emergency? I worked on the book so I'm biased, but... "Pet First Aid" may help save your pet's life! From the American Red Cross, the nation's largest humanitarian organization, and The Humane Society of the United States, the nation's largest animal protection organization. All proceeds support the efforts of both non-profit organizations. Makes a great gift for everyone you know that owns a cat or dog. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Don't like
This book is so basic it doesn't even tell you what to do if your dog has a vaccine reaction. It only says what your dog should be vaccinated against. I thought it was going to have more info. I would not recommend this book to anyone who does not live close to a vet.

5-0 out of 5 stars Every dog owner should have this book
"First Aid for Dogs" was one of three similar books I bought and is clearly the best, by a head and shoulders margin. It has almost 200 pages of information about a variety of conditions that can occur at home, in the neighborhood, or in the field. It makes very clear what to look for (symptoms) and then gives a helpful "decision tree" (if this is present, then do or look for ---; if that is not present, then look for or do ---).It is also very clear about what options you have in contacting a vet: Now! Same day. Within 24 hrs.Soon.Phone for advice.

It very clearly tells how to check symptoms. It covers almost every imaginable condition a dog owner would usually encounter. In the money it will save in trips to the vet that weren't needed, using this book will save its cost many times over.

The book is very well organized into sections, Part 1, What to do first, how to make splints, etc,; Part 2, What to do next, checking symptoms, what to observe; Part 3, First aid for various emergencies; Part 4, improving health, how to give/apply meds. The line drawing illustrations are simple, clear, and helpful. The index is comprehensive and useful.

By comparison, one of the other books I bought (published by a university press and written by vet school faculty), is higher priced, has about one fourth the pages, and contains much less than a twentieth the information. "Always have injuries examined by a veterinarian" is neither sufficient or particularly helpful advice. For poisoning, it recommends "veterinary advice should be sought."

The third first aid book I bought was for outdoor dogs (I have a Lab). It has a little less than half the pages that Fogle's book contains. The topics it covers are adequately treated but I've found nothing covered that is not also in Fogle's book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Literally, a life saver.
When my wife, Amy, and I bought Sparky, our pet pekinese, we picked up this book, though we hoped to never need it.It was so clearly written and easy to use that the entire family read it.When our oldest son, Ryan, used it to save Sparky from choking on peanut butter, we realized just how valuable the advice in this book is.Thank you, Bruce and Amanda, for saving our dog's life.

2-0 out of 5 stars Too old but some ok basic concepts
This book was published in 2001.As such there is no information regarding open fit OTE hearing aids.I also could not find any information regarding cochlear dead regions and the use of hearing aid fitting for patients who may have that problem.

If you can find a cheap used copy maybe think about it but overall it is a dated reference.Do an internet search at Hearing Journal, Hearing Review, American Academy of Audiology, or any number of other sites and get better more up to date information then this.

    Book Description

In 1993, Helen Epstein, a scientist working with a biotechnology company searching for an AIDS vaccine, moved to Uganda, where she witnessed firsthand the suffering caused by the epidemic. Now, in her unsparing and illuminating account of this global disease, she describes how international health experts, governments, and ordinary Africans have struggled to understand the rapid and devastating spread of the disease in Africa, and traces the changes wrought by new medical developments and emerging political realities. It is an account of scientific discovery and intrigue with implications far beyond the fight against one tragic disease.
The AIDS epidemic is partly a consequence of the rapid transition of African societies from an agrarian past to an impoverished present. Millions of African people have yet to find a place in an increasingly globalized world, and their poverty and social dislocation have generated an earthquake in gender relations that deeply affects the spread of HIV. But Epstein argues that there are solutions to this crisis, and some of the most effective ones may be simpler than many people assume.
Written with conviction, knowledge, and insight, Why Don’t They Listen? will change how we think about the worst health crisis of the past century, and our strategies for improving global public health.

4-0 out of 5 stars hiv prevention: now and how
"As a woman living with HIV," says Beatrice Were of Uganda, "I am often asked whether there will ever be a cure for HIV/AIDS, and my answer is that there is already a cure. It lies in the strength of women, families and communities who support and empower each other to break the silence around AIDS and take control of their sexual lives." With a vaccine against HIV far off in the distant future (if at all), and with treatment of AIDS in the two-thirds world difficult, expensive, and limited in effect, the name of the game in HIV-AIDS is prevention. But in places like Africa, which is the focus of Helen Epstein's book, prevention is not as simple as it sounds. As she notes in her appendix, measles, syphilis, tuberculosis, and other entirely preventable diseases still kill millions of people even though they can be treated for pennies.

Why has HIV-AIDS ravaged eastern and southern Africa like no place on earth? "In 2005," she writes, "roughly 40 percent of all those infected with HIV lived in just eleven countries in this region-- home to less than 3 percent of the world's population." In some of these countries the infection rates have hit 30 percent, decimating the general population, while in the west, for example, rates hover at about 1% and are generally limited to specific demographics like gay men, intravenous drug users, and commercial sex workers." Theories abound about this discrepancy, but Epstein argues a narrow point, that Africa's problem is not profound promiscuity, or even the normal culprits of high risk groups like prostitutes or truck drivers, but instead a social phenomenon of "concurrent partners." That is, Africans do not have more sexual partners than in other places in the world, and nowhere near as many as gay men among whom infection rates are exponentially lower; but they do have a small number of sexual partners concurrently, at the same time, rather than one at a time or sequentially. This has set the virus loose among the general population like a runaway train.

And why has prevention been so elusive? Epstein appeals to what she calls the comprehensive "social ecology" of denial, silence, shame, adverse gender roles, and stigma about HIV-AIDS. Western-initiated and donor-funded programs will always be less successful than listening to Africans themselves and their own suggestions about how to address the problem. Uganda, of course, has been the amazing success story in this regard, and the subject of bitter debates about why. In 1989 Uganda had one of the highest infection rates in the world, but from about 1992-2002 the infection rate dropped by two-thirds. The key to the success, argues Epstein, was not in the billions of dollars from the west, but from the "collective efficacy" of a "shared calamity," by people helping each other and talking openly about the scourge. In particular, "partner reduction," she says, and not the much vaunted condom use, helped Ugandans to address the cultural phenomenon of concurrent partners. Partner reduction, as one worker described it, is thus the "neglected middle child of the ABC approach" of abstinence, fidelity ("be faithful"), and condoms. Zero Grazing, as Uganda's president Yoweri Museveni called for, is thus the silent cure already available, however valuable other prescriptions.

Epstein, a molecular biologist who has written widely on public health issues, combines rigorous science and the anecdotal evidence of substantial field research. She's clearly as comfortable with and interested in meeting with a dozen African widows under a mango tree as she is in the latest results of a demographic study. Her book has received strong reviews in the New York Times and the New York Review of Books (where her mother was a co-editor before she died), and also a rebuttal of sorts on the home page of UNAIDS that was provoked by her somewhat conspiratorial stance toward research that she argues they ignored because it didn't fit their partisan ideology.

5-0 out of 5 stars Clear Thinking About Slowing the AIDS Epidemic in Africa
We have been overwhelmed by bad information about what causes AIDS to be so much more prevalent in the eastern and southern parts of Africa than elsewhere in the world.Even though more money than ever is being directed to stopping this epidemic, that money is hardly ever being spent for a helpful purpose.Helen Epstein carefully describes what she learned on site in Africa about what the primary problems really are and how best to deal with those problems . . . rather than the problems that politicians and NGOs want to address.Millions of lives are at stake:Please read what Ms. Epstein has to say and share what you learn with others.

So what's different about people in eastern and southern Africa that makes AIDS so much larger a risk there?

1.Men are much less likely to be circumcised.Circumcion cuts infection risk dramatically.

2.Although the people in that part of the world have no more (and often fewer) sexual partners over a life time, these people are more likely to be active with more than one sexual partner at a time. That habit causes those who become infected to spread the disease much faster and further.

    What can be done?

Uganda (once the area most affected by AIDS) provides the answer:Make sure everyone knows that AIDS risk is there for everyone who is a drug user and shares needles, or has sex with anyone who has more than one partner without using a condom. The public in general, and politicians as well, like to paint AIDS as being a problem limited to homosexuals, sex workers, and promiscuous people. But in places like eastern and southern Africa, those who monogamous can be almost equally at risk.In fact, Uganda doesn't use these good policies any more ("No Grazing") because fighting AIDS has gone from being a local activity to being a national policy.

Ms. Epstein reports in detail how local initiatives to get the correct information out can make a big difference (saving an estimated one million lives in Uganda).National and international initiatives seem to waste almost all of the money (as she points out in several examples).

By not paying attention to what works and what doesn't, country leaders and international NGO leaders run the risk of making everyone feel like everything is being done . . . when the wrong things are being done.As a result, millions will die.

It's a sad story of how everyone wants to help, but they see the problem as being like the nail in the eye of a carpenter. You hit the nail to solve the problem.Drug companies want to develop vaccines.Condom makers want to sell condoms.Churches want to preach sexual abstinence.Politicians want to ignore the frequency of rape, casual sex, and cheating among married people.Individuals want to believe they are safe because they know the people they have sex with. But most of these nails don't make much difference.

Let's start hitting the right nail!

5-0 out of 5 stars An important contribution to addressing this ongoing tragedy
I'm an American doctor working in rural KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. I can attest to the substance of much of the material presented in this book and the importance of its message, specifically that norms of sexual behavior in this culture need to be discussed and changed for prevention efforts to begin to be effective. As the author aptly discusses, numerous aid organizations, flush with good intentions and funds, seem to operate on the periphery of this central issue. One of the most disturbing lessons of my time in the midst of this horrible tragedy is the realization that the stigma attached to this disease in many parts of sub-Saharan Africa remains so severe that many people prefer to die than to find out that they have AIDS, a point the author seems to get across through with many informative anecdotes. The fundamental thesis is that we need to begin to engage the leaders within these societies at a fundamental cultural level regarding relationships and sexual behavior. No small task. I would highly recommend this book as the first read for someone trying to understand why AIDS is so unbelievably prevalent in Sub-Saharan Africa. As of today, for every person we enroll in antiretroviral treatment in rural KwaZulu-Natal, five will be newly infected. It's very depressing to see so many people dying from a preventable disease--1,000 people die of it every day in South Africa alone.

5-0 out of 5 stars A vital and important book
How rare it is to come upon an author like Helen Epstein. She not only knows her subject, with its numberless scientific and political implications; she also writes about it in a way that makes a common reader want to know more and more. She educates, she invigorates, shebreaks our hearts. This is a vital and important book. -- Ben Sonnenberg, New York City

5-0 out of 5 stars A CLASSIC WORK
The most important book published on AIDS in a long time, and one of the most important books of the year.If you liked Rachel Carson's Silent Spring or And The Band Played On, you will love this book. It is readable, impassioned and brilliant, and despite its savage denunciation of the failures of the West to deal with the AIDS crisis, it is an essentially optimistic work. Publishers Weekly in a starred review said it will save lives, and that is not hyperbole.I urge anyone who is interested in the greatest medical crisis of our time; anyone who is interested in Africa; anyone who is outraged by the failure of the UN, the WHO and the Bush administration to deal with this tragedy, to buy this book and give it to your friends. It is the kind of book that will change peoples' minds and will move continents. It will be read for years to come... ...
