5-0 out of 5 stars living with albinism
I really enjoyed reading this book. I found it to be very informative.I have a son that is albino and I now see that there are many other albinos and what they experience.I also enjoyed reading about some of the geneticsof albinism.I was also pleased to see my uncle in the book. Albinism runsheavily in my family. The research that was done to make this book wasphenomenal.I especially liked that this book is designed for children tohelp them get a better understanding of albinos and may teach them moresensitivity.

5-0 out of 5 stars my son` understanding of his own albinism
I bought this book to help my son Cameron and myself learn and deal with his albinism. The book has alot of wonderful pictures of people that look just like him. The layout was very simple so I could understand it and thenrelay it back to my son. The parts we both liked best were the differentstories about albino`s.They were treasured by many different cultures. Theamerican indians especially worshiped someone withvery light color. Tothem it was a sign of good luck from their god. All different races alsocan have albinism ofvaring severeness. I would recommend this book toanyone who wanted to understand what people like my son go througheveryday.I am so glad that I have had the oppertunity to relay my story tosomeone who cares. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars really informative book
Our 8 month old was diagnosed with albinism at 10 weeks and I wish I had bought this book right at the beginning. It is fantastic. It's written in a really reader-friendly style, and answers all the questions you wanted to ask the doctor but forgot because your mind went blank when you were in the room!

We initially read so much literature on the subject which told us in medical terms about albinism, but where was the practical advice when we needed it? In this book!! It deals with some really sensitive issues such as how you, the parent may feel about the diagnosis; albinism in children of colour; dealing with starting school and the social aspects of the condition. These aspects of the book are what sets it apart from any other text I have read on the subject. There is also a very useful section about the education system and a very detailed, but relatively easy to understand explanation about genetics of the different types of albinism.

Would definitely recommend to any family affected by the condition :0) ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars One Man's Courage
As I read this book, I found myself being drawn totally into the world of this courageous man.Without pulling any punches Lee G. Edwards brings to the reader in the most raw and detailed illustration his experience growing up as a black male with albinism in an unjust society. He brings you face to face to what it is like to not only experience racial prejudice but also what it is like to be ostracized by your own race.Once you have read this book you will witness how Lee G. Edwards overcame the most extreme social and personal adversities and at the same time reached back to others with albinism, so they will not have to experience the same suffering.

4-0 out of 5 stars A very educational account...A "must read!"
This book meant a lot to me as an African with albinism because its an uncensored outpour of real emotions and real feelings unglilded by common dillusions that most persons living with albinism have learned to live without. I highly recommend this book for anyone interested in the sociological study of race and race relations as well as a better understanding of the lives of Africans with albinism. It leaves the reader to challenge the racial "norms" of society because its neither an account of pessimism nor optimism but a tale of what was, and is on-going in society.

5-0 out of 5 stars An incredible expression of life
This book expresses the true emotion, true challenges, and compelling life experiences of Lee G. Edwards. It gives a very real and powerful illustration of what it's like to go through life constantly faced with social and personal challenges. This book raises the awareness of albinism and has something everyone can identify with.Lee makes himself very transparent and beause of this raw vulnerability, anyone reading this book will be touched and take a peice of Lee's experiences with them.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Real Eye Opener
A compelling read!!! With our national debate on race dominated by "black and white" issues, this book is a real eye opener. It provides an entirely new take on prejudice and discrimination in America today.
Imagine being forced to exist in a never-never world where you have no race to call your own, a world in which you are not only subjected to white discrimination, but those in your own community--including your own father--cannot accept you because you are not black enough. I have never read a stronger indictment of the insanity of racism. Mr. Edwards writes passionately, with raw honesty, generously offering his own trauma and recovery to give others hope A must read for anyone who says they care about social justice.

5-0 out of 5 stars TRULY INSPIRATIONAL
READING THIS BOOK WAS AN ISPIRATIONAL AND EDUCATIONAL EXPERIENCE! I WOULD SUGGEST THAT EVERYONE READ THIS BOOK. IT SHOWS HOW WE AS A NATION ARE SO JUDEMENTAL WHEN SOMETHING DOES NOT LOOK RIGHT TO US. IT ALSO SHOWS HOW A PERSON CAN BE SO GRAVELY EFFECTED BY THE IGNORANCE OF OTHERS. I THINK WE SHOULD ALL REMEMBER THIS COULD HAVE EASILY BEEN OUR CHILD. AND HOW WOULD YOU FEEL IF YOUR CHILD WAS TREATED ON DAY TO DAY BASIS AS THIS YOUNG MAN HAS BEEN AND STILL IS TREATED? IT IS TRULY FOOD FOR THOUGHT. AND STILL WITH ALL THAT HAS HAPPENED TO HIM, HE STILL HAS A POSITIVE AND OUTGOING ATTITUDE AND WISHES TO EDUCATE OTHERS SO CHILDREN DO NOT HAVE TO SUFFER LIKE HE HAS BEEN MADE TO. THAT IS WHY I AM GIVING THIS AUTHOR FIVE STARS HE TRULY DESERVES IT AND HIS WRITING SKILLS ARE OUTSTANDING! ... Read more

Product Description
Webster's bibliographic and event-based timelines are comprehensive in scope, covering virtually all topics, geographic locations and people. They do so from a linguistic point of view, and in the case of this book, the focus is on "Albinism," including when used in literature (e.g. all authors that might have Albinism in their name). As such, this book represents the largest compilation of timeline events associated with Albinism when it is used in proper noun form. Webster's timelines cover bibliographic citations, patented inventions, as well as non-conventional and alternative meanings which capture ambiguities in usage. These furthermore cover all parts of speech (possessive, institutional usage, geographic usage) and contexts, including pop culture, the arts, social sciences (linguistics, history, geography, economics, sociology, political science), business, computer science, literature, law, medicine, psychology, mathematics, chemistry, physics, biology and other physical sciences. This "data dump" results in a comprehensive set of entries for a bibliographic and/or event-based timeline on the proper name Albinism, since editorial decisions to include or exclude events is purely a linguistic process. The resulting entries are used under license or with permission, used under "fair use" conditions, used in agreement with the original authors, or are in the public domain. ... Read more

Excerpt: Albinism (from Latin albus, "white"; see extended etymology, also called achromia, achromasia, or achromatosis) is a congenital disorder characterized by the complete or partial absence of pigment in the skin, hair and eyes due to absence or defect of an enzyme involved in the production of melanin. Albinism results from inheritance of recessive gene alleles and is known to affect all vertebrates, including humans. The most common term used for an organism affected by albinism is "albino". Additional clinical adjectives sometimes used to refer to animals are "albinoid" and "albinic". Albinism is associated with a number of vision defects, such as photophobia, nystagmus and astigmatism. Lack of skin pigmentation makes the organism more susceptible to sunburn and skin cancers. Albinism affects people from all races and its frequency across the human population is estimated to be approximately 1 in 20,000. There are two main categories of albinism in humans: Other conditions include albinism as part of their presentation. These include Hermansky-Pudlak syndrome, Chediak-Higashi syndrome, Griscelli syndrome, Waardenburg syndrome, and Tietz syndrome. These conditions are sometimes classified with albinism. Several have sub-types. Some are easily distinguished by appearance, but in most cases genetic testing is the only way to be certain. Albinism was formerly categorized as tyrosinase-positive or -negative. In cases of tyrosinase-positive albinism, the enzyme tyrosinase is present. The melanocytes (pigment cells) are unable to produce melanin for any one of a variety of reasons that do not directly involve the tyrosinase enzyme...http://booksllc.net/?id=2909 ... Read more

I wrote a substantial portion of these articles myself. The book is probably legitimately published under Wikipedia's very permissive license, but there is zero point to purchasing this, since a) the material is available for free at [...], b) the online versions are revised on an ongoing basis, and c) even if you wanted a printed version, you could print it on your own printer for less cost in paper and ink/toner.As for content, the articles are presently fairly well-sourced and informative on a basic level, but are not particularly in-depth treatments of albinism (and were never intended to be - they are encyclopedia articles, not books). ... Chapters: Albinism in Popular Culture. Source: Wikipedia. Pages: 191. Not illustrated. Free updates online. Excerpt: The depiction of albinism in popular culture, especially the portrayal of people with albinism in film and fiction, has been asserted by albinism organizations and others to be largely negative and has raised concerns that it reinforces, or even engenders, societal prejudice and discrimination against such people. This trend is sometimes referred to as the "evil albino" plot device or albino bias. The "evil albino" stereotype is a villain in fiction who is depicted as being albinistic (or displaying physical traits usually associated with albinism, even if the term is not used), with the specific and obvious purpose of distinguishing the villain in question from the heroes by means of appearance. Traits of albinism commonly associated with the evil albino stereotype include pale skin, platinum blonde hair, and blue or pink-to-red eyes. Notably absent from most depictions is impaired vision, which is experienced by most real people with albinism. The stereotype has become sufficiently well-recognised to attract satire and to be considered a cliché. In response to the "albino gunmen" characters in The Da Vinci Code and The Matrix Reloaded, albinistic actor Dennis Hurley wrote, produced and starred in a short film parody, The Albino Code, playing up the stereotypes, illustrating a typical example of real-world prejudice, and pointing out that the vision problems associated with albinism would make a successful career as a hit(wo)man highly improbable. In The Big Over Easy, author Jasper Fforde includes an "albino community" protest against albino bias among his fictional news clippings, most of which satirize stock characters and hackneyed plot devices.
