5-0 out of 5 stars This book's program should be in all alochol abuse programs.
If you have a problem with alcohol and has been unsuccessful with conventional programs or know someone who has. DON'T GIVE UP BEFORE YOUR READ THIS BOOK. IT COULD SAVE YOUR LIFE OR THE LIFE OF A LOVE ONE.Thisprogram can help millions who suffer from alcoholism. It explains why somany alcoholics are unsuccessful at abstaining from alcohol. Itcontradicts the general perception of alcohol abuse and that alcoholicscan't be helped until they want to. It proves (if you will) that alcoholismis indeed a disease and not only mental but mostly physical. I foundanswers and reasons for why alcoholics behave the way they do and how it isgenetic and hereditary. This book is based on scientific and medicalresearch and the findings are absolutely amazing. It also shows that likeany other physical disease or illness, if after diagnosing the problem, there is not a physical treatment to prepare the damage, recovery is almostimpossible. The program described is extraordinary to say the least.Frankly it disturbed me that our government has had this evidence for over40 years that this program can triple the success rate of recoveringalcoholics as well as make it easier and less painful for persons trying toget help.Reading this book could probably greatly increase the amount ofpeople who seek help.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Book and a Life to Inspire
"Matt Talbot" is a short biography-inspirational life of an obscure Dublin workman who has become an inspiration for those who seek to rid themselves from addiction to alcohol. The fact that there is a story of Matt Talbot is a story in itself. Matt lived such an obscure life from 1856-1925 that no picture of him exists. It was only after his death that people began to collect memories of him and his sanctity began to be recognized. Talbot's problems began at the age of twelve when he tried to help his family by getting a job with a wine merchant. The sampling of the wine led to a sixteen year slavery to alcohol. In 1884, aware of what dirnk was doing to himself and his mother, Matt took the pledge to refrain from drink. He kept his pledge for the rest of his life. As he freed himself from alcoholism, Matt found, in Jesus and His Mother, someone in whose service he could gladly enslave himself. Most of the book contains memories related by those who knew Matt which display the degree of his dedication to religious devotion. In this book, Sister Susan Helen Wallace, FSP, has pemitted adults to enjoy her gift for religious biography which she had previously reserved for children

5-0 out of 5 stars Finally, My Review
Mid-life, Shmid-life....it was clearly this guy's destiny to do this trip at some point - it had been brewing inside him forever.

And he brings you along very closely. Not only with the amazing landscape and culture, the monumental challenges, the simple joys, the one-of-a-kind adventures, and the fun cast of characters along the way; but he brings you into his head. For better or for worse, it's an often touching study as to what makes this guy tick.

It's a great read, and allowing for a bit of literary license in a character or two (and I should know - I'm "Cassie"); this is a brilliant book, a brilliant journey, and the author - one of the brighter crayons in the box.

Enjoy it.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Idiot and the Odyssey
The Idiot and the Odyssey is a joyful, life-affirming book that I recommend to everyone, especially those who are going through major changes in their lives.Joel Stratte-McClure is a superb writer who not only takes us on a highly entertaining escape to the lands bordering the Mediterranean. He guides us through a spiritual journey of self-discovery, with ample references to the wisdom of the ancient Greeks and eastern philosophers. By the time you finish this book, you'll be ready to set off on an adventure of your own.

5-0 out of 5 stars Gerald Rodgers, Advanced Placement English, Santa Maria High School
It's not at all the travel memoir it purports to be. Joel Stratte-McClure's
book The Idiot and the Odyssey is a rich commentary on life, quests, and
purpose, and the brazen tale of this eccentric smacks of attitude both
audacious and foolhardy.Yet quite unlike that Ithacan who had himself tied
to his mast so he could safely hear the siren's songs, the ponderous hero of
this story maintains unbelievable equanimity in his enviable brushes with
Mediterranean Circes and sylphs, and he emerges, through his hilarity and
touching humanness, the wiser and more virtuous for having listened to their
words.A marvelous narration, one breathing ancient literature into a
modern and real theater, it connects myth with geography, history back with
legend, and life-affirming purpose with the old bugaboo, the concept of
impossible Quest. The A.P. Program of the College Board, which has recently
adapted similar modern memoirs as grist for their essays (Alain de Botton's
works come to mind), may be well-advised to consider a similar plundering of
Joel Stratte-McClure's recount of his trek to challenge Scylla, the Cyclops,
and Charybdis.² Gerald Rodgers, Advanced Placement English Teacher, Santa

Product Description
In 1994 as a result of their alcoholism, Lilian and Murdoch MacDonald were down and out, sleeping rough in the streets and parks of Cambridge, the English university town where, a quarter of a century before, Murdoch had studied for an honours degree. Refusing to accept what they consider to be the outmoded myths and dogma of Alcoholics Anonymous, Lilian and Murdoch set about searching for the underlying causes of their self-harming behaviour problem, which they discovered lay in childhood. Although Lilian and Murdoch's upbringing caused their problems, they themselves take full responsibility for their drinking, most importantly because taking responsibility for one's own actions is the starting point on the road to recovery. As a result of their endeavours, the couple are today back home in Ayrshire, Scotland, leading normal lives again, with their problems of alcoholism and Lilian's associated eating disorder well and truly behind them. Controversially, they are also now able to drink alcohol responsibly again, if and when they so wish. This book is the inspiring story of their journey. ... Read more

Product Description
Most Americans believe that the only way to control the devastating addiction of alcohol is total abstinence. But now those views are being challenged and the means of treatment re-examined. Alternatives to Abstinence offers an unconventional perspective on the 50 million Americans who struggle with alcohol. It raises intriguing questions: Is alcoholism a disease or a behavior? Is it possible that for some, alcoholism can be treated with moderation rather than abstinence? Are Alcoholics Anonymous and other 12-step programs the only way to sobriety? According to a growing number of researchers and others who have struggled with alcohol, the long-held views of AA and other 12-step programs are only helpful to a small segment of the population. Abstinence, these experts and recovering alcoholics say, may be the only remedy for some people, but not necessarily for others. Alternatives to Abstinence addresses the controversy surrounding controlled drinking while weighing the positive benefits of behavioral modification techniques with problem drinkers. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars For god's sake, don't commit.
Bit of a tedious read. Mostly obvious. Very cautious and circumspect at times. It could be a feel good book for those afraid to enter the bleak world of abstinence but its not.Heather's new book might be titled: "Smoke one cigarette a day in relative safety".

5-0 out of 5 stars Well-researched, dispassionate
This relatively recent compilation of treatment methods for alcoholism is a well-researched summary of alternatives to the popular AA-style abstinence method. The book has an agenda, as will any work on this subject--Ogilvie asks why, in a world where medical treatments are increasingly being tailored to fit the individual, treatment methods for alcoholism other than complete abstinence are so controversial. A very useful resource.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great look at options other than AA
I liked this book because it describes different options than the only one I knew about before I read the book -- Alcoholics Anonymous. As a person who is not particularly religious, the idea of giving up drinking completely AND beginning a new religion at the same time was never going to happen. Now I have some ideas to help me try to cut back, and see if that will work for me. If not, maybe I'll try one of the other groups mentioned in the book. Easy to read, too! Also liked all the web addresses for help and research.

5-0 out of 5 stars At Last!
Sometimes it seems like 12-step programs have taken over the world! Their adherents zealously insist that the 12 steps/AA is the ONLY way to cope with alcoholism. This book presents a welcome escape from the tyranny of 12 steppers. In a thoughtful, balanced way, the author reports that there really are other answers for alcoholics, answers that might suit some of them much better than abstainence programs do. She carefully examines all sides of the abstainence argument and details a variety of alternative programs. In addition to the very readable narrative, the book contains an extremely valuable appendix that describes more than a dozen different programs/organizations and gives contact information for each as well as a list of therapists who offer moderation training. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A Truly Astounding Book!
Complex inthe synthesis of many thoughts and in its comprehensiveness, this brilliant book isboth clearandsimple in its exposition, without being condescending. An indispensable companion to AA's literature, it is always focused on the essentials of a lifetime of spirituality and sobriety.

Hank N. New Lebanon, NY

5-0 out of 5 stars An inspirational read for anyone seeking a spiritual awakening
I was moved to read "The Spirituality of Sobriety" after meeting the author at a yoga teachers' conference. His sense of compassion and devotion to his spiritual path were inspirational.

I have no personal experience with addiction or 12-Step programs, yet I found the book to be an enlightening and encouraging discourse on the pursuit of spirituality and a higher power in everyday life. The theme is applicable to anyone who is seeking spiritual growth and wishes to make a deeper connection to his or her own life. There is much to be learned from AA's Twelve Steps whether one is in recovery or not!

Gregg D. shares with the reader his own personal path through, and clear knowledge of, various traditions on his way to spiritual awakening. He also draws from well-established psychotherapeutic tools and academic writings to illustrate how self-examination and self-acceptance are crucial steps along that road. And at various points throughout the book, quoting beautiful poetry and prayers, he gives gifts of gentle guidance from his own awakened heart.

5-0 out of 5 stars A SuperbGuide to a Spiritually-Based Walk in Recovery
I have spent some significant time studying The Spirituality of Recovery, by Gregg D.I consider it to be a worthy and wonderful companion to the Alcoholics Anonymous Big Book and the AA 12 Steps and 12 Traditions book. The author has been able to capture, with down-to-earth clarity and heart, an imaginative, inspirational and relevant sharing of his own struggles and triumphs. He blends the 2 AA books and other religious sources as the core for the deeper life recovery experience. I found in his book both comfort as well as personal and practical applications of the great truths in my own life.I highly recommend this book to anyone seriously wanting to learn to grow deeper in his or her walk with God in order to live out a more spiritually based and practical lifestyle in any area of recovery.

5-0 out of 5 stars Superb commentary and supplement to AA's 12 Steps
This book is a superb analysis of AA's 12 Steps. Gregg D. takes the whole
12 Step Program apart, expertly examines the principles from several spiritual disciplines----and then puts it all back together again so that
the Program still remains essentially simple.. Only now the reader understands WHY the spiritual principles are and must remain simple.

As an attorney, I liken Gregg D.'s writing to the opinions of Judge Benjamin Cardozo. They are so carefully thought out that ideas seem flow
naturally----no big long sentences, no big words, no jargon----just an
absolute elegant simplicity that makes everything ring true.

Every concept in this book is backed with citations to Conference Approved
AA literature, and is intended to be read in addition to----not instead of----the "Big Book" and the "12 & 12". It's designed to bring about a Spiritual Awakening, which is the true goal of all 12 Step Programs.. THAT
relationship with a Higher Power is the purpose of the 12 Steps----the
release from the obsession of drinking, drugging, over-eating, gambling,
etc., is an incidental side benefit of a connection with a Power greater
than ourselves..

"The Spirituality of Sobriety" by Gregg D. gives many concrete examples of
different ways to establish and maintain that vital Spiritual Awakening..
I've read this book several times, recommend it very highly, and have given
copies to others. ... Read more

The book offers a socio-critical analysis of the alcoholic perception in the poetry and fiction of modern American alcoholic writers. Matts Djos focuses on primary indicators of alcohol addiction (fear, manipulation, anger, loneliness, and antic-social behavior) and their expression in modern American literature. After providing a general foundation for analysis of the psychological effects of the disease, this volume scrutinizes the work of Ernest Hemingway, John Berryman, E.A. Robinson, Hart Crane, Theodore Roetheke, Robert Lowell, John Steinbeck, and William Faulkner. The detail provides critical and in-depth perspective on the workings of the alcoholic mind.

Product Description
White Knuckles and Wishful ThinkingLearning Fromthe Moment of Relapse in Alcoholism and Other AddictionsThis book builds on one relentless fact about addictive relapse: Atthe moment of picking up the first drink/drug we all say one of twothings.Either "One won't hurt" (or a handful of "wishful"variations) or "F--- it" (or a smaller, less frequent list of "whiteknuckle" variations.")

What does this mean? Why is it that so many different people, --different addictions, different stages of the illness, differenteducational and cultural back- grounds -- all say the same thing atthis critical moment? After all, this is the very moment thattreatment and recovery strive to prevent. And if we could understandit, might we not help more people not have to repeat it?

For over twenty years now, the author has looked inside this fatefulmoment. With a relentlessness surpassed only by addiction itself, hehas sought to enter and comprehend the psychic world of the personliving it.He also steps back and looks at this moment from theperspective of the would-be helper.Whether we read to help ourselvesor to help others, we, too, must be able to see from within andwithout.Like the author, we must sift through psychological andbiological theory. The theories mean nothing if they do not connectwith human experience.
