Hardly a day goes by without news headlines concerning infectious disease threats. Currently the spectre of a pandemic of influenza A|H₁N₁ is raising its head, and heated debates are taking place about the pro’s and con’s of vaccinating young girls against human papilloma virus. For an evidence-based and responsible communication of infectious disease topics to avoid misunderstandings and overreaction of the public, we need solid scientific knowledge and an understanding of all aspects of infectious diseases and their control.

The aim of our book is to present the reader with the general picture and the main ideas of the subject. The book introduces the reader to methodological aspects of epidemiology that are specific for infectious diseases and provides insight into the epidemiology of some classes of infectious diseases characterized by their main modes of transmission. This choice of topics bridges the gap between scientific research on the clinical, biological, mathematical, social and economic aspects of infectious diseases and their applications in public health.

The book will help the reader to understand the impact of infectious diseases on modern society and the instruments that policy makers have at their disposal to deal with these challenges. It is written for students of the health sciences, both of curative medicine and public health, and for experts that are active in these and related domains, and it may be of interest for the educated layman since the technical level is kept relatively low.

A good starting point
The words 'Mathematical Models' in the title called my attention, but this is definitely not a math book. On the other hand, it is very comprehensive and gives a very good and up to date overview of social epidemiology, including modern diseases and some of the questions which touch modern life. It is, in this sense, better aimed at those who are in public health. Anyway, as I'm new to the subject, I consider the book a good starting point, but if you want to work the mathematics and statistics of epidemiology, you should go for Bailey's 'The Elements of Stochastic Processes with Applications to the Natural Sciences', and 'The Mathematical Theory of Epidemics'. Another more basic but also important book is 'Statistics for Epidemiology', by Nicholas Jewell. ... Read more

Good info, boring presentation
I am a veterinarian interested in expanding my chicken knowledge.This book has good information but has very few pictures, and the way that it is arranged makes it difficult to look up rule outs for a disease based on symptoms observed.It is written for mostly high production systems, and doesn't have much info at all on individual problems.It seems to be written for British poultry vets, but it does also include US info.I would not recommend this book. ... I had (nice to say 'had') arthritis caused either by a virus or infection. My doctor treated with Azithromycin, but I read this book and took and am taking fat emulsified cod liver oil. The dietary principles seem to be sound. If nothing has worked save for increased doses of NSAIDS, this book can help. Cod liver oil has some very helpful uses. ... Read more

Following the H5N1 epidemic they appear to be endemic at least in Asia, Eastern Europe, The Middle East and Africa. Particularly in case of AI outbreaks it is essential that infection is diagnosed promptly and that isolates are made available to the international scientific community.

Currently, several organisations including OIE, FAO and the EC have organised training courses in affected areas. However, often these courses do not cover all aspects of AI/ND diagnosis but only certain aspects. This results in fragmented areas of knowledge and in the application of different diagnostic protocols in different parts of the world.
