5-0 out of 5 stars Life saving recipes
I purchased this cookbook because I had to go on a no-dairy, no-soy, no-egg diet due to the food intolerances of my baby who I am breastfeeding. I initially started trying to cook foods from scratch that I had in the past and removing the dairy/soy/egg with my own substitutions. Although this worked for a while my variety was extremely limited as I did not know how to substitute ingredients in baked goods and/or more complicated recipes. This cookbook has provided a great source of help and inspiration. The recipes are quite good and you no longer feel deprived because there are recipes for everything from appetizers and snacks to desserts. I particularly like the baked goods, although I did have to experiment a bit altering cooking times and at times adding a bit more baking powder in order to get things just right (which I believe has something to do with my oven not the recipes). The book has been extremely helpful for my family as we can continue to eat together and have good healthy food. I was even able to have a great chocolate cake for my birthday--something I thought I would not have until after my baby stopped breastfeeding. One thing to keep in mind is that if you are not a cook (which I am not) it will take time to feel more comfortable creating the recipes as the recipes are not always simple. However, the end product is well worth it. Also note that some of the necessary ingredients will likely not be readily available in a standard grocery store and you will need to head to the health food store or a store like Whole Foods to get several of the ingredients. I would recommend this book and have to my daughter's pediatrician in the event there are other parents in my position.

5-0 out of 5 stars A God Sent Cookbook!
My son was recently diagnosed with multiple food allergies and I was at a loss of how to cook for my family.Does he get special meals while we eat as a family? Do we all eat plain chicken and potatos every night? Will he never enjoy sweet treats?
The Whole Foods Allergy cookbook has allowed me to cook delicous (and normal!) meals for my whole family that are safe for my son.My husband is very picky and a cheese lover, but he has also loved the recipes.I can't stop raving about this cookbook and keep trying to find people with food allergies so I can tell them about the book.
So far we have really enjoyed the turkey meatloaf, Lady from Naples Sauce, turkey meatballs and the favorite dressing.I have also made the oatmeal cookies and corn chowder which were pretty good.I look forward to trying more recipes.
Get this book if you have anyone in your house with food allergies and want to try to live a normal life!

5-0 out of 5 stars Yummy
I had a hard time finding a cook book that had recipes that my kids would actually eat. They eat these, and they are so yummy. I even love them and I have a hard time eating healthy. It's a winner for us.I recommend this book to all of my friends.

5-0 out of 5 stars Must-Have in any allergic family's library
The recipes in this book are so good that even my non-allergic husband loves them!I do wish there were more entrees that were more simplistic for those nights when you don't have time to cook a gourmet meal though.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not useful if you're looking for gluten-free baking or easy dishes for kids
*Be sure to check out sample recipe before you purchase this book.* I'm most disappointed with the baking recipes. My son has multiple food allergies and the most challenge I have is baking with no gluten, eggs or dairy. This book avoids wheat, but uses barley flour, spelt flour instead, both of those contain gluten. Also, if you're looking for recipe to cook for your toddlers/young children with multiple food allergies, this may not be the book for you. The recipes use many ingredients and most of them are not so easy. With an active toddler and food allergies, I don't have time to cook these complicated food. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Food Allergy Book I've Come Across
This book was easy to understand, practical and informative. I've read several books about food allergies at this point, and food allergies for dummies is the one I found to be most helpful. If you or a family member have just been diagnosed and you've looking for information. I'd definitely recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars What's missing!
As a grandmother of an almost 3 year old grandson, with a severe peanut/tree nut allergy, I found this book great...but sadly, not complete. What is missing? Information about products, other than food, that can cause an alergic reaction.Products, for instance, like bean bag chairs stuffed with peanut shells; certain craft items, like paint or Moon Sand, made with peanut/tree nut oils. All are dangerous and can cause a reaction by contact. To keep him as safe as possible, I DON'T BUY ANYTHING UNLESS IT HAS A CUSTOMER CARE PHONE NUMBER LISTED ON THE LABEL. Everything he eats or comes in contact with must be checked and double checked!! Hope this helps others with the same difficulty.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent information
Just started reading but love this book already.Must read for those with food allergies or parents of kids with food allergies.Well worth the money.

5-0 out of 5 stars Informative and well-written
From the start of this book, I felt like I was sitting down for a one-on-one conversation with Dr. Wood.Having a severe peanut allergy himself, he offers a unique and very personal perspective not found in publications by other doctors. This book came along at the perfect time for us - with our oldest food-allergic child on the brink of entering public school, I am especially grateful for the practical information and advice in that arena.

This book is down-to-earth enough to serve as a starting point for food allergy "newbies", and well-organized enough to serve as a reference for us "veterans".I would recommend it to anyone affected by food allergies.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Addition to My Food Allergy Library
I am also a co-leader of a food allergy support group. I have read a lot of books on food allergies as well as have had a lot of great speakers come to our meetings addressing food allergies. I find this book to be one of the best available. It is very resourceful and easy to use and easy to understand. It covers a wide range of topics. There is information on testing, avoidance, sending your child to school with food allergies, alternative treatments, etc. I am glad to finally find a book that covers it all. You won't be disappointed with this one.

4-0 out of 5 stars good information on variety of flours
I liked this book because my son is allergic to wheat, barley, rye, strawberries, coconut, red meats (yes, really), peanuts, tree nuts, and shellfish. While we did not rotate (HAD to do total avoidance!), I really liked the intro to so many new foods, such as amaranth, quinoa, and buckwheat, and her succinct flour chart at the front (which nicely describes their qualities for breading, baking, etc., as well as whether they contain gluten).I use it frequently for this alone!
However, as another reviewer pointed out, there are many uses of foods my son is allergic to, and I have to substitute, but with the number of allergies he has, I have to do that anyway (try baking with no wheat, eggs, or milk!).That said, my son (and all his friends) love the grain-free pancake recipe she has in here, and just for the record I use regular buckwheat rather than all that grinding.Thank you!

3-0 out of 5 stars Don't believe the book's title!
First the bad news:This book's title is an outright lie and should be changed (or the book's content changed to fulfill the title's promises). It claims to contain 350 recipes that are free of common allergens including gluten, soy, milk, etc. This is completely untrue.A large percentage of these recipes contain at least one of these allergens, usually with no options provided for substitutions. Particularly of note is the extensive use of items with hidden gluten and soy.People newly diagnosed with allergies may not realize that many of the ingredients contain these allergens and the recipes are not labeled to let you know.In spite of the claim to be milk-free, there is a whole section dedicated to milk-based recipes (using goat milk, perhaps, but still a problem for most of us).Ironically, she mentions that beef recipes were left out of the book because some people might be sensitive (although it's not one of the allergens the book claims to be free of).Obviously gluten is a much more common allergen and harder to substitute for than beef so it seems that which ingredients are included is more arbitrary than based on the needs of the allergy-prone.Since most gluten-free cookbooks contain large amounts of other allergens (like dairy, corn, or soy) I was really hoping for a cookbook that wouldn't require me to make massive substitutions.

For people with nut allergies (which I don't have), this is probably the wrong book for you, skip it.

In spite of all this (and the warnings posted here, thanks, everyone, for that!), I decided to take a look at the book since there are so few options for people like me with multiple allergies.Although the fact that the title is grossly misleading made me angry enough that I didn't want to buy the book, I finally decided that there was enough good information to make it worthwhile. The first thing I did was go through the book and cross out all the recipes that contained gluten, wheat, soy, dairy, and corn (my biggest allergies and the hardest to substitute for). There were MANY!

Finally, the good:There is a lot of good information in this book (tempered with some bad - if you are newly gluten-free, wheat-free, etc. consult another book for information on foods to avoid). The book includes the usual writeup on alternative flours and other substitutions.Strangely there is no mention of rice milk as an option for those allergic to soy and dairy - and no mention that many (or most) nut milks contain soy.She also doesn't give substitutes for margarine in recipes for those allergic to soy and dairy.

Unlike other books, she includes nutritional information related to avoiding certain foods. For example, she lists each of the B vitamins and explains the best dietary sources. If you are allergic to a number of these foods, you could be at risk for not ingesting enough through your diet. For those of us forced to avoid many foods (or for people with other medical issues) this information could be critical.

Of course we're all mostly interested in the recipes.Even after excluding the large number withgluten, dairy, soy, etc. there were still a lot of interesting items left. For me, the salad dressings/veggie dips were the most useful.Since I can't have soy, dairy, or citrus, these recipes offered new hope for me (but most contain nuts, be warned).Other recipes seemed good but not particularly simple to make. This book is better at offering variety than quick options for a weekday. On the other hand, if, like me, you're looking for some "real food" options for entertaining, this book offers some good ideas that aren't overly complicated.

Good luck and happy eating!

2-0 out of 5 stars Sub-titles are extremely mis-leading - soy, nut and sugar-FULL!
I'm not the first person to leave this review, but while the publishers claim "..free of all common food allergens..." this is completely untrue.I purchased it knowing that there might be a few recipes with a few of my more unusual allergens in it (say, carrots), but I think there are perhaps 10 recipes in the entire book that I can use (after further substitution) - because the rest have nuts, soy or SUGAR as a primary ingredient.

Let's talk about the sugar for a moment.I also need to watch my sugar intake carefully. The book claims to be "sugar-free", but many of the recipes contain large quantities of agave or concentrated fruit juice.Cane sugar-free it might be, but NOT SUGAR-free.I might have purchased "The Yeast Connection Cookbook", except that I don't trust the sugar content of the recipes after getting a good look at this book.

Every time I try to use this book, I end up feeling like there's no food in the universe that I can eat.

There is a good chunk of information at the front of the book about flour /ingredient substitutes. It isn't 100% complete, but it's not bad, either. If you've got a new gluten, wheat, milk, or egg problem, or are avoiding CANE sugar (vegans, for example) this book might have something for you.Otherwise, get a copy of The Joy of Cooking and research the substitutions on line. It'll save you a great deal of frustration.

5-0 out of 5 stars Tasty!
This remarkable book has not only freed me - and my wife - from embarrassing sneezing and oozing rashes, it's blessed my kitchen with the best recipes for sand I've ever tasted!

2-0 out of 5 stars Wasn't for me
I like simpler recipes. I thought a lot of the recpies called for too many ingredients and seemed like a lot of work. OK for someone into cooking but not if you're on the go.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book is awsome!!!!
I highly recommend this book to anyone that has to cook for a loved one with dairy, egg, and nut allergies. You really take for granted the foods you eat every day untill they become unsafe for a familiy member. I was thrilled to be able to make pancakes, cookies, and cake for my daughter with these allergies. She is my youngest of three- so we all eat foods prepared with recipes from this book- and they are good. The recipes are easy to follow and use common ingredience. It has been really difficult to find resources for these specific food allergies. This book is great!!!

3-0 out of 5 stars Not enough for trouble spots
The author warns this book is not a place to find "replacement" foods, but rather a book of recipes that "just happen to be" allergen-free. Her chapters include:
-Soups & Salads
-Beef
-Poultry
-Fish
-Pasta
-Potatoes
-Rice
-Vegetables
-Miscellaneous
-Quick Breads & Breakfast Foods
-Cakes
-Cookies
-Other Desserts

While I assert that we sometimes WANT replacement foods, my biggest complaint is that it doesn't have enough where these allergies cause trouble. Egg, nut and dairy allergies cause difficulties with breakfast, dessert and baked foods. Those are the areas where this cookbook treads lightly. It offers some wonderful cookie recipes! The cake recipes, however, taste too "healthy" for my family. :) Other than that, we've not tried anything because we haven't needed to. I know how to cook vegetables and main dishes without dairy, eggs or nuts. I don't need a special cookbook for those.

Also, the recipes don't allow for "growing out" of allergies. We've just discovered that my son, while he still has his dairy allergy, may no longer be allergic to eggs. It's much easier to just pop in some eggs than to make the oil/water/baking soda mixture necessary to use these recipes. It would be nice if the author allowed for substitutions if not all the allergies exist.

Overall, I'd say it's a good book, but I prefer The Egg, Dairy and Nut Free Cookbook.

5-0 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT - A MUST HAVE - Allergies or Not!!!
I purchased this book based on the title and the previous reviews but was still hesitant about what the outcome would be. My 10 month old daughter is allergic to dairy, eggs and nuts (and my husband is allergic to ALL nut products) and this book has been a lifesaver! EVERY recipe I have made has been a HUGE hit with the ENTIRE family. I have even made the cinnamon applesauce cake for the extended family and they all asked for the recipe! We love these recipes and I plan to make them part of our regular weeknight meals regardless if my baby outgrows any of her allergies. I would recommend this cookbook even if you do not have any allergies in your family. They are easy to follow recipes with amazing outcomes! What's to Eat?The Milk-Free, Egg-Free, Nut-Free Food Allergy Cookbook

5-0 out of 5 stars A very helpful resource
I bought this book when my son was first diagnosed with multiple food allergies, and I have used it many times in the last three years. The recipes, overall, are good and simple to follow. It is a particularly good resource for baking. This Christmas, I tried several of the cookie recipes, and all turned out delicious. (My family all especially enjoy the Chocolate Sophisticates!) We have also used the book for birthday cakes and cupcakes. People are always surprised to find that they were made without mik and eggs!

We really haven't used many of the meal recipes, except for the New Potato Salad (which is great), because not many would appeal to my very picky son. The baked goods, however are very good, and the recipes are a good place to start for people learning to bake without milk and eggs. I get many good reviews of the recipes from family and friends, and have not been disappointed so far.

If you are dealing with food allergies, and need a good starting point, this is a great book to try.

3-0 out of 5 stars pretty good
at least this one has some main meal recipes in it.
many of the allergy books seem to focus on baked goods.

this has some baked goods, but also a few appetizers and some main meals.
not a bad book - but i think that some more main meal recipes would make it better. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars How to CURE "mental illness"
I have been researching the drug industry and psychiatry over the past year and have attended a Harvard Medical School seminar to see what is being taught concerning psychopharmacology. What I have learned is that for generations, orthomolecular physicians like Dr. Philpott have been curing mental illness by recognizing that brain malfunctions are caused by medical problems such as thyroid, kidney, and sleep disorder problems, an immune disorder cerebral allergy, metal toxicity, Candida infestation and enzyme and nutritional imbalances such as essential fatty acids deficiency (malnourishment). Biochemical testing can assist in determining underlying causes. Even Harvard's Dr. Stoll, who receives compensation from about ten different drug companies, recommends fish oil to provide essential Omega 3 fatty acids and vitamins as an effective treatment for depression.
According to Prescription for Nutritional Healing P. 448, A thyroid condition can cause fatigue, mood swings and depression, P. 153: An allergy is an inappropriate response by the body's immune system to a substance that is not normally harmful. P. 157: Cerebral allergies cause swelling of the lining of the brain. P. 154: Persons between the ages of fifteen and twenty-five are the most allergy-prone.
Entire food families can cause allergic reactions in susceptible people. Repeated headaches, or schizophrenic, violent, or aggressive reactions, can be an indicator. Foods such as corn, wheat, rice, dairy products, and chocolate, and certain food additives, are the most common offenders but chemicals such as petrochemicals or other substances, like mold can also cause serious problems. Other manifestations of food allergies are; acne, arthritis, asthma, chest and shoulder pains, colitis, depression, fatigue, food cravings, headaches, hemorrhoids, insomnia, intestinal problems, muscle disorders, obesity, sinus problems, ulcers, and unexplained dramatic weight changes. The list goes on and on. Allergies can also affect children diagnosed as Autistic or exhibiting ADHD.
To cure, orthomolecular physicians have patients stop eating what they are allergic to. These physicians remove toxic metals from the body, rid the body of Candida, and provide supplements as needed. The best book I have seen so far on this topic is this book, Brain Allergies. A proper diet is also wise to fuel the brain with essential nutrients and exercise provides oxygen to cells and assists in removing toxins via sweat glands.
Unfortunately, the drug industry has such an influence on psychiatrists that it is still common for them to recommend superficial physical testing (if any at all), ignore the results, and rather than determine the cause and fix the problem, they try to cover up symptoms with mega doses of drugs that cause damage and sometimes disability. One of many adverse effects from psychiatric medicine is the neurotransmitter brain damage imbalance known as Parkinsonism where a person can no longer walk or talk normally due to extreme slowness. According to Merck's web site, the disorder's pathophysiology is inhibition of dopaminergic system due to blockage of dopaminergic receptors by antipsychotic drugs. An excellent, very alarming book is Rethinking Psychiatric Drugs, which was written by a psychiatrist who stopped practicing psychiatry after seeing drug damage. According to this publication, drug trials are not unbiased, these drugs are no more effective than placebos, and they cause brain damage. A similar publication adds information concerning how to stop taking drugs, Your Drug May Be Your Problem.
If psychiatric drugs could cure, you would be able to take them and stop. Instead, drugs mask and/or change symptoms, they can be addictive, and they have serious side effects. Drugs are toximolecular. They are substances foreign to the body, in sub-lethal (and sometimes lethal) amounts. They should be used only as a last resort, emergency measure. Other treatments also cause permanent harm, such as electric shock that is well known in the industry for causing permanent memory loss. Harvard Medical School is now offering continuing education regarding using magnetic therapy. However the strength they are using is much higher than what Dr. Philpott used with success - so that will probably harm as well.
As a health consumer, you have to be your own best advocate.
The reason I am so concerned about this topic is that I know someone who was nearly disabled by antipsychotic drugs until Dr. Shaw with Great Plains Lab in Kansas (www.greatplainslaboratory.com) called with results from biochemical testing done. The lab tests showed this person is allergic to dairy and eggs, was toxic in aluminum, had a Candida problem and other imbalances. After the treatment plan outlined above, this person was able to get a job - cured!
I believe that all "mental" problems are caused by physical, medical problems. The fact the problems have not been discovered does not mean they do not exist. Treatments should not separate the mind from the body.
Just one person mentally distressed, disabled by drugs, and not able to work, will cost at least two million dollars over a lifetime, so this is an issue that impacts all of us financially as well as ethically.

5-0 out of 5 stars Really helped a lot!
This book was very helpful in explaining what was going on with my daughter's dairy allergy. Now I finally have some confirmation of what I have been observing and know what to do to help her.

The bit about any food, not just carbohydrates causing diabetic reactions was very interesting and I'd recommend reading it to anyone suffering diabetes.

Also, I've worked with the homeless mentally ill and wish the psychiatrists in the programs they are in would read this. These poor people are not responding to conventional medicine, and what these men wrote could be of invaluable help to them.

The book also talks about a cure for tardive diskinesia in two days using nutrients.More people should know about that.

It was the first to really explain vitamin C therapy and how it works.I was glad to see Linus Pauling redeemed. After reading it I looked it up online and found a wealth of information, including a charity trying to give free vitamin C to people with HIV in South Africa.I guess a lot of other people believe in vitamin C, also!

I almost put it down when I got to the part about using magnets to calm agitated people with mental illness, but was really glad I persevered, the rest of the book was well written and incredibly informative.

5-0 out of 5 stars Revolutionary
As a Chinese herbal practitioner, I have recommended this book to several clients who have autistic children. In almost every case, there has been a marked improvement in the child's situation. The book details not only thescience and theory behind Dr. Philpott's approach, but more importantlyspends a lot of time discussing practical implementation.Conventionalwestern medicine still tends to ignore the dramatic impact our diets canhave on the mental/emotional aspect of our lives; BRAIN ALLERGIES makes avery significantcontribution to the growing literature around the old andvery true proverb: "we are what we eat."If you're dealing witha child with emotional and/or cognitive difficulties, PLEASE read thisbook! ... The layout and title of this book gives the strong impression of a guidebook, yet quite a cast of recipes lies within. In fact, the latter half of the book is all cookbook, with over 100 recipes.I was elated to find that each recipe was free of dairy, eggs, fish, gluten, peanuts, shellfish, soy, tree nuts, wheat, and yeast. How refreshing to find a book that actually lives up to its title / subtitle. It was so nice to not have to sort through which recipes were "safe" and which weren't, the whole book was a go!

As for the first half of the cookbook, it seems to be a culmination of food allergy knowledge from among the three well known authors, Vesanto Melina (MS, RD), Dina Aronson (MS, RD), and Jo Stepaniak (MSEd).I have read and perused more than a few food allergy books, and this is certainly one of the best. The authors touch on the required material, such as explaining food allergies / sensitivities and food allergy testing, but they then move on to cover new ground that is seldom discussed in the surface world of food allergies.

Though the book reads fairly well, some sections do get bogged down in biology and other details. Some sub-chapter listings would be helpful to make this a true reference book. Each chapter is truly dense with information, and per standard, the index is a bit too muddled with keywords to serve as a quick and easy guide.

I have already trialed several of the recipes, including the Chickpea Pizza, a Mediterranean style flat bread, the Beannaise, a soy-free, dairy-free mayonnaise alternative, and the Hot Fudge Sauce (pretty self explanatory). All worked out but the sauce, which I will retry.I have been very pleased with the ease of the recipes, spending less than 30 minutes on each, even when preparing them for the first time! Not to mention, aside from an inexpensive bag of chickpea flour (easier to find than I thought), I haven't had to purchase any out of the ordinary ingredients. It should be noted that all of the recipes are also vegetarian / vegan.

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome
I recently found out I had a gluten allergy and had been desperately looking for recipes for old favorites (breads, muffins, cookies, scones etc...) when I stumbled on this book. I hurriedly got it at Politics and Prose in Washington D.C. and went directly to the grocery store to procure all the new ingredients I will need to eat gluten-free. I made the Sunny Seed Bread as soon as I got home (with the book's recipe for all purpose allergen-free flour). It is AMAZING! Not only the best bread I've ever made (gluten breads included, and i've tried MANY) but one of the best breads I've ever tasted. ANYONE would love this bread, and there is no giving leniencies because it's "gluten-free" - no one could ever tell. Not to mention gluten-free, but the book really does cater to all allergies - corn, yeast, egg, nuts, dairy ETC ETC ETC. How can these recipes be so delicious when they are free of so much? It's a true phenomenon and PHENOMENAL book. I knew that if Jo Stepaniak was working on the recipes, they would be outstanding. She definetly delivers, as she always does. Another author I knew to trust was Vesanto Melina, from the wonderful "Becoming Vegan" book. I am thoroughly impressed and CAN'T WAIT to try all the other recipes - ultra fudgy brownies, berbere (ethiopian) spice mix, graham masala, muffins (with so many varieties possible), scones, etc. Although I mention a lot of sweets (i have a sweet tooth) the book has MUCH MORE than sweets; all kinds of vegetable and bean recipes, savory crepes, spreads, dressings, savory baked goods, etc. etc. etc. I am SURE that all of these recipes will be delicious, tried and true by the dependable Jo.
As well as delicious recipes, the book contains a ton of information on all the common (and even some less common) food allergies. This information is incredibly interesting and useful; the authors are a lot more thorough than one might expect from a book with so many delicious recipes. A feature I particularly appreciated: For each allergy there is a table with all the foods that definetly contain the allergen and a table with all the foods that possibly contain the allergen. I especially enjoyed a section where new foods are introduced. These foods, like buckwheat, amaranth, miso, quinoa to name a few are not new to the world, and the brief histories and tidbits explain this and much more.
Overall, it's a wonderful book. It's clear the authors put a lot of time and TLC into creating this marvelous book. I can't praise it highly enough. I'm so glad I bought it.For the size and length of the book, especially for it's quality, helpfulness and enjoyability, you're definetly your money's worth and much, much more. Thank you SO much Jo, Vesanto and Dina.

4-0 out of 5 stars comprehensive and easy to follow
Very thorough and readable guide to alternative foods if you suffer from common food allergies. The author didn't just give the usual alternatives but made suggestions for a varied, interesting and tasty diet! Good if you like trying new things and have the time to make the recipes (some can take a while).

5-0 out of 5 stars Food Allergy help
This book is wonderful!I bought one for myself and one for a friend. She has some food allergies even worse than mine.We are both using it! It doesn't just cover the question,"what if I eat the wrong foods?", but it also covers the "how to not eat the wrong food and still feel like you've eaten something".I'm very glad I got it.

Book Description
A revised and updated version of the definitive peanut allergy book.

Since the publication of The Peanut Allergy Answer Book in May 2001, there has been much additional research published in the field of peanut allergy and anaphylaxis in medical literature. This research includes new diagnostic tests, new vaccines and therapies, and new information on the history of peanut allergy. In addition, there has also been a great increase in public awareness of the societal impact of peanut allergy, such as in schools and other child-care facilities, in restaurants, and in the food and restaurant industry. This attention has led to the publication of guidelines for schools in the management of food allergies and anaphylaxis, to legislation such as the Food Allergen Labeling Consumer Protection Act of 2006, and proposed legislation for restaurant guidelines for food-allergic consumers. The incidence of peanut allergy has doubled in the past five years and continues to increase so the impact of this medical problem, particularly in young children, is enormous.

The Peanut Allergy Answer Book, 2nd Edition,. contains 50% of new and revised material, including a new foreword and introduction, as well as new chapters such as, "Why has peanut allergy increased so much in the past 5-10 years?"; "What is the difference between being peanut-sensitive and peanut-allergic?"; "What is the Hygiene Hypothesis?"; and "Can skin contact cause an anaphylactic reaction?" ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great first read for the newly allergic.
I read all the reviews on this book before buying it.Plus, it came recommended by my son's allergist.Amazon has a great price on it too.It was a quick read.I will hold on to it for reference.I just wish it had more resource listings for helping you locate peanut free foods.

5-0 out of 5 stars Anxious Parent
I purchased this book when I found out my 6 month old was allergic to peanuts.I learned so much from it and parent that has a child with this allergy should buy it.I am fortunate that it was Dr. Young's partner that is my daughter's doctor I do intend to transfer to him as a doctor after reading this book if he is accepting new patients.I had no idea when I purchased this book the author was from Boston.I'm so glad he is!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Very informative
I thought this book was very helpful as I have 2 children with peanut allergies. It answered many questions that I have in very easy to read language. It is a must read for anyone with concerns about peanut allergies.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Peanut Allergy Answer Book
Very helpful and consise. Gives a thorough overview of peanut allergy and is easy to understand. Helpful for both myself (I have a peanut allergic son) and for my family to better understand the issues involved.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very informative
There is a lot of helpful information in this book, especially about foods that contain peanut products when you would not expect it and about the treatment of allergic reactions.I am about 40, and have been severely allergic to peanuts my whole life.I had to learn much of this information through some very unpleasant allergic reactions. If you have a child with a peanut allergy or have the allergy yourself, I would highly recommend this book as a way of avoiding some of those unpleasant (and sometimes life-threatening) experiences, and as a way of understanding how the allergy works. ... I bought this for my daughter who is gluten, wheat, soy and corn free.absolute waste of $$.do not buy this if you have multiple allergies!!!

2-0 out of 5 stars Food Allergy Cook Book
The title of this book lead me to beleive I would be able to create meals that would be allergen free.It had lots of desserts, which I do not eat sweets, and very little in the way of meals that are wheat gluten and lactose free. The book does address rotation of foods, which I found helpful, but not worth purchasing for my needs.

4-0 out of 5 stars Allergy Elimination
Having had severe food allergies all my life, the book offered some useful tips. For example, how to make your own yogurt, to have intestine tests done, a description of the rotation diet, etc. I found the recipes not very inspiring. I was also disappointed that no reference was made to the non traditional allergy elimination technique of NAET. Although NAET is not an absolute cure either, it can eliminate some of the allergies. A good book for someone that has not studied and explored all about allergies yet.

5-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive Survival Guide
Wow. I just got into this book (and Easy Breadmaking by the same author) and am amazed! These are not just cookbooks. The author takes the time to explain the facts, diagnosis, and treatment options for food allergies. She also includes a comprehensive nutrition section, all written in an easy to understand and very uplifting way. I am thankful that someone has taken their time and talents to write down what we need when challenged with multiple food allergies.

5-0 out of 5 stars A true survival guide
All of Nickie Dumke's books are excellent. She is extremely dedicated to helping others through allergy trials and brings years of experience to the task. Although worth buying just for the helpful recipes, they are also just what the title says: survival guides. And that's how I have used them to help me during periods of very severe food allergies and chemical sensitivities. I thank God for providing such a fountain of help during such a trying time. ... i very important book to help you figure out what ity is why your dog is chewing her/his opaws food and other things how to fixes

3-0 out of 5 stars Good book, but I still have questions
I was looking for a book that would help SOLVE my problems with dogs and allergies - this book just gives examples of what to look for (is it or is it not allergies) and suggests seeing the vet.Been there, done that - was looking for more creative ideas than seeing the vet and putting them on steroids (the standard prescription).I will keep looking for something to resolve my dogs' allergies and skin issues

4-0 out of 5 stars I Refer to This Often
I have a dog that has severe allergies and, unfortunately, is one of the 1/3 or less who have not seen significant success with allergy injections (after 2 years...sigh). But, Dr. Messonnier offers many types of therapies/treatments for dog's with skin problems/allergies. His writing is honest and direct--this book made me realize that nothing will completely "cure" the allergies--but can make my dog's life more comfortable. In addition, the author does state that most treatments may not be the "sole" form of treatment--that they have to be used in conjunction with several other treatments.Right now, my pup is trying some homeopathic remedies along with conventional ones. And, I am still trying. This little book is pretty comprehensive. It gives the WHYs along with the HOWs to treat. I disagree with the other reviewet that the author does not talk about treatment. Over half the book is on treatment. Recommended with those who struggle with the irritating and frustrating problem of canine skin allergies.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not what I expected
While this book is great if you simply want to learn about what allerges are, it does not give advise on how to treat the problem yourself. It will help you to have an informed discussion about the topic with your vet, but if you are wanting to learn how to treat your animal or what suppliments to use, this is not the book for you.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Allergy Solution for Dogs
I write MacAnswers, a question/answer column for Great Scots Magazine, a publication for Scottish Terrier owners. The question I wanted to tackle for the September/October issue was about allergies. However, I was tempted to put that subject on the back burner since entire books can be written on allergies in dogs and how to control them.Fortunately, I found Dr. Messonnier's book The Allergy Solution for Dogs. This new book does indeed provide the solution for dog owners who are willing to invest more time and interest in solving their dog's discomfort than a monthly trip to the vet for a steroid injection. Dr. Messonnier's holistic approach to allergies makes sense, and I highly recommend this book to any dog owner who is dealing with the frustrations of a dog that itches and itches.Breeds the book lists which have an especially high incidence of atopic dermatitis, a genetic disease which predisposes dogs to skin allergies are: West Highland White Terriers, Cairn Terriers, Shar-peis, Scottish Terriers, Lhasa Apsos, Shih Tzus, Wirehaired Fox Terriers, Dalmatians, Pugs, Irish Setters, Boston Terriers, Golden Retrievers, Boxers, English Setters, Labrador Retrievers, Miniature Schnauzers and Belgian Tervurens. ... Book Description

For children with food allergies, eating -- one of the basic functions of life -- can be a nightmare. Children who suffer or become dangerously ill after eating peanuts, seafood, milk, eggs, wheat, or a host of other foods require constant vigilance from caring, concerned parents, teachers, and friends.

In this empathetic and comprehensive guide, Dr. Scott H. Sicherer, a specialist in pediatric food allergies, gives parents the information they need to manage their children's health and quality of life. He describes why children develop food allergy, the symptoms of food allergy (affecting the skin, the gastrointestinal tract, and the respiratory system), and the role of food allergy in behavioral problems and developmental disabilities. Parents will learn how to recognize emergency situations, how to get the most out of a visit with an allergist, what allergy test results mean, and how to protect their children -- at home, at school, at summer camp, and in restaurants.

Informative, compassionate, and practical, this guide will be indispensable for parents, physicians, school nurses, teachers, and everyone else who cares for children with food allergies.

Ditto everyone else's 5 star reviews.A fantastic book for parents and extended family members of the food allergic child.Sicherer write in a clear and concise manner, explaining all one needs to know. My child has food allergies, including Food Protein-Induced Enterocolitis Syndrome (FPIES), and I've done a lot of research and am active in an online FA support group. This book explains it all, even stuff I didn't already know. His FPIES section is excellent. I keep this book on out for quick access, as I often use it as a reference.

Book Description

A leading international authority on food allergy and intolerance provides invaluable advice for achieving dramatic and long-lasting improvements in your health.

Explains how sensitivity to foods is responsible for many chronic and misdiagnosed ailments such as migraines, sinus problems, and persistent fatigue.

Includes a step-by-step process for identifying food allergies and intolerances and reshaping your diet for better health.

Many people suffer from chronic, unexplained health problems--migraine headaches, poor digestion, recurring sinus symptoms, aching muscles and joints, persistent fatigue--whose causes remain elusive, even to doctors. When conventional tests fail to provide a clear-cut diagnosis, doctors often suggest that these symptoms are due to stress or anxiety, but now Jonathan Brostoff and Linda Gamlin demonstrate that quite often food allergies and food intolerance are the true culprits in these situations.

The authors provide clear explanations of the causes of, as well as the differences between, food allergies and food intolerance and offer numerous case studies on problems all too familiar to many readers. More important, they provide much-needed solutions and treatments for these problems. Along with a wealth of illustrations and charts, Food Allergies and Food Intolerance includes an invaluable step-by-step process for diagnosing food intolerance with a three-stage elimination diet and a system of gradual food reintroduction. A must for anyone who suspects a chronic condition may be linked to dietary sensitivity, Food Allergies and Food Intolerance supplies information that often results in dramatic and long-lasting improvement in people's health and in their lives.

5-0 out of 5 stars Valuable, surprisingly readable, and nearly exhaustive
It is no surprise that this outstanding book is in its third edition. It contains a wealth of information for anybody with food allergies or food intolerance or anybody who thinks he or she might have food allergies or intolerance, and even for people (and doctors!) who would never think their health problems or their patients' problems could be due to eating foods that don't agree with them.

The authors make a distinction between food allergies, which typically involve mast cells going haywire, and food intolerance which results in symptoms not directly attributable to mast cell reactions. This is a very important distinction beyond the terminology since some doctors are skeptical about food causing sickness unless the mast cells are involved. The authors show, citing numerous clinical studies, a lot of research work, and specific individual examples, how food allergy and intolerance works, and they present a program to guide the reader to identify possible causes. They also give a step by step guidance on how to conduct various diets, including the elimination diet that may allow the reader (with his or her physician) to identify foods that are causing health problems. It's not just asthma and hives and other obvious symptoms that could be caused by food allergies or intolerances. The authors argue very convincingly that a host of other discomforts (and worse) could have as their cause and/or their trigger, certain foods. The most likely suspects in the American diet are wheat, milk, eggs, peanuts, tree nuts, coffee, tea and alcohol. The authors also point to the possibility of sensitivity to a host of man-made chemical substances that can cause debilitating symptoms

What makes this one of the best books of its kind that I have ever read (and I've read many books on food and health) is the wealth of information presented, the crystal clear writing, and the frank expression of the controversy surrounding how foods might cause disease.Additionally, the authors shed a lot of light on the complexities involved in digestive and immune system response to foods and how befuddling these complexities can be for lay persons and professionals alike.

Also covered are how microorganisms, especially what the authors call "gut flora," affect food absorption and digestion, and how they can cause disease.I learned a lot about how our bodies, along with the trillions of microbes we harbor, can either work together or at cross purposes. The material on how antibiotics or exposure to certain chemicals can alter our gut flora and trigger allergies or intolerances is just fascinating.

Brostoff and Gamlin also cover how food allergies and intolerances affect infants, children and nursing mothers. They are specific about what foods can be at fault and how to avoid them and even which foods can be substituted for suspected culprits.

And the symptoms themselves--asthma, running nose, headaches, migraines, arthritis, muscle and joint pain, rashes, hives, diarrhea, bloating, gas, irritable bowel syndrome, all kinds of inflammation, strange discharges, hyperventilation, and many more--are described and given their possible cause from foods.

There are ten appendices covering such things as "Synthetic Chemicals in Food and Water," a nice discussion of bottled water and water filters and how they work, "Medicinal Drugs," "Nutritional Supplements," "Synonyms for Food Ingredients," (useful when reading labels), etc.

The fact that this book is a little out of date (third edition, copyright 2000) should not deter you from reading it.Yes, there is some controversy about some of the conclusions the authors come to; but they tell you where there is disagreement and why.

Do yourself a favor. If you have any sort of unexplained symptom or have friends or relatives with unexplained symptoms, read this book. There is nothing else quite like it in print that I know of.Certainly nothing on the same level of value to the general reader. In fact, I would go so far as to say that were this book more generally read, an incalculable amount of pain and suffering might be avoided.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great overall information on food allergies vs intolerance
This is a concise and well written book for someone who is experiencing distress due to a possible food allergy or intolerance. The author writes in a clear and informative manner delineating the difference between an allergy and intolerance....something my doctor never touched upon. I would recommend it as a must read for anyone who is experiences any sort of food related reaction.

2-0 out of 5 stars too wordy and outdated
This book does have some good information on food allergies and food intolerances, but the 470page book could be about 150 pages. The authors go on and on about all sorts of stuff that isn't directly related-- way to wordy. No many references and it seems like a lot of the information is opinion. Also, I've found more updated information on the internet.

5-0 out of 5 stars Extremely informative book
This book has a tremendous amount of useful information about the relationship between food and well-being.I spent 15 years and a lot of money trying to get help for my various symptoms only to be told I was a nervous person, and my mental state was probably causing my physical problems.I recently suspected I had food allergies and took dairy out of my diet with amazing results.I suspect I'm also allergic or sensitive to other foods and am getting ready to embark on an elimination diet. This book is informative but doesn't preach that food allergies are the cause of all symptoms. It gives other possible causes for specific symptoms. It's a great tool if you've exhausted other means and hope for feeling well.I now have hope that I could feel fantastic in the not-too-distant future.I also found a wonderful doctor who actually listens to me and doesn't brush me off. It's not wise to totally self-diagnose, you need a doctor who will listen and work with you.

5-0 out of 5 stars A comprehensive and responsible discussion
For anyone who suspects they might have food intolerance, this book can help them on the path to wellness. Symptoms, testing and potential avenues of treatment are all discussed. Be forewarned, it can be a complex and daunting task, though worth it.

I was surprised and impressed that the author addressed the concept that some manifestations of food intolerance may be psychosomatic in nature or partially so. Sometimes it's not all in your head, but sometimes it is. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Dissapointed b/c of printing mistake
The book itself is very informative for me because my son suffers from allergies.I was however dissapointed because the page numbers went from 1-31, 82-101, 1-31.This must have been a printing mistake! This is the kind of book you would want to look up something in the index and then find the page number but you can't do it!!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Hope for allergy sufferers
Allergies:Disease in Disguise has changed my life. The author has written first a clear definition of what allergy is, and then given a plan of action to over come it. In the last few years, I have suffered from a widening array of allergies and was miserable much of the time while taking allergy medication. After following the authors directions for recovery for 4 weeks, I am recovering! I would recommend this book to anyone who is willing to make some perhaps significant changes in diet.

5-0 out of 5 stars I would give it 10 stars
I read this book the same time my son (who is suffering from atopic eczema) started a therapy with a naturopath. To my amazement did she the exact same things recommended by the author. And even better I knew what she was doing, because I had read the book myself. After 6 years of frustration, seeing my son suffering from eczema, countless, sleepless nights comforting my son, we finally seeing improvement. It took 4 months of drastic diet changes and 4 visits with the naturopath and my son is almost symptom free. we never got that far.Who ever is affected by allergy - indirectly (as parent or caregiver) or directly - should read this book. It is easy to read (even for me - english is not my native language) and to understand. It changes the way of thinking, of why we are getting sick and that we are responsible ourselfs for the things we put in our mouth we often call food! Good luck.

5-0 out of 5 stars I'm glad to read such a logically well presented book.
So many people are closed minded to the possible side effects of eating cooked and processed foods.I found the book entertaining and informative, with logical, easy to understand explanations. I just wish I could dosomething to help people to learn how to improve their health. I think aperson's health is the most important part of life. What can you do whenyou're ill all of the time? This book and a few others I've read latelyinspired me to change my diet signifigantly, and whenever my instructorasks me to write a paper, I usually write about a health concern that I'minterested in. It also makes me feel good that the truth is being revealed, you just have to go in pursuit of it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best book I ever read!
This has to be the most informative, yet easy-reading health book in existence. The author has excellent credentials and is obviously very well educated.Being sick for 23 years, this book has filled in many missingpieces to the great puzzle of my condition -- something 20-odd doctors havebeen absolutely no help with.If you have ANY chronic health problem orjust don't feel as good as you'd like to, READ THIS BOOK!It gives youvaluable information on a broad spectrum of interrelated topics and thenconcludes with a distinct plan of action. It kindled hope for me that Ican regain my health and have a life for the first time since age 17. ... Book Description
Millions of children across the country have food sensitivities or allergies, and the number is on the rise. And most of these children don’t get to eat cookies, for fear of the reaction they might have from the wheat, or the peanuts.Imagine the feeling a young child must have as they stand there watching their friends munch on cookies just out of Mom’s oven, while they have to make do with yet another carrot stick….

Leslie Hammond knows that left-out feeling all too well.As a child she suffered from severe food allergies and would watch year after year as, when the birthday song had ended and she’d blown out the candles, her fancy party cake was whisked away and served to her friends, while she ate a dry rice cake. Now the mother of allergic children herself, Leslie vowed to spare her own children that trauma. She had developed over 100 recipes that will appeal to a kid’s tastes.Unlike other food-allergy cookbooks already on the market, her recipes hardly ever call for the kinds of ingredients that would gross out any kid -- like tofu.

The book’s recipes take into account all of the most common food sensitivities like wheat and gluten, peanuts, or dairy. Each recipe can be modified to fit the dietary needs to the child.

It’s divided into three sections -- snacks, main dishes, and treats.Leslie and co-author Lynne Rominger also provide information about how to find what you need in a regular grocery store, instead of requiring a separate trip to the natural foods store. She writes from the perspective of an ordinary working mom, and doesn’t design eating regimes that would take all day in the kitchen to satisfy.

With the recipes in this book, even the most sensitive child will get a cookie too. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent cookbook for multiple food allergies
My 14 month old baby is allergic to dairy, eggs, wheat, peanuts, treenuts, peas, chicken and many more.I need cookbook to cook for him and myself. (on elimination diet)This is the book I use most of the time to cook for the whole family.I have seen many bad reviews on this book in which, I quite disagree. The recipe may list eggs or nuts as ingredients, but there is suggestion for substitution at the bottom. For example, egg replacer is very common substitution for eggs, not only for this cookbook. Some recipes in this book suggest omiting egg, and it works fine.I've tried many recipes in the book, with substitution at the bottom of recipes, and they all work. What I really like about this book is, the recipes are quite simple. There are not as many ingredients as other wheat-free food allergies cookbook. Less ingredients have advantage in that there is less chance I'll run into my baby's allergens. They are also much simpler to prepare in less time. With food allergic baby there isn't much time to do complicated cooking. The baking recipes also don't use xanthan gum, which my baby is sensitive to. Overall, I love this cookbook!! I would highly recommend it to any friends with multiple food allergies.

2-0 out of 5 stars Wish I had bought a different book
Really disappointed with this cookbook, and I don't even know if I will use it.Really wish I had bought a different one, there are just so many to choose from. The thing about this one is, these recipes are not dairy free and egg free, etc., like it claims, but almost all of them have this stuff in them but with suggested substitutions to the side on some of them. And then on some the author says you can't substitute eggs in this one...well then why is it even in there??It is deceptive and I wouldn't buy it.

1-0 out of 5 stars Misleading title; not GF/CF
This book claims to have more than 150 recipes that are wheat-free, gluten-free, dairy-free, nut-free, egg-free, low in sugar.NOT!The recipes are not free of all of these allergens. Some are free of gluten, some are free of nuts, etc. Most of the recipes have egg & many have dairy. This is NOT a book for kids on a gluten-free/casein-free (GF/CF) diet.Good thing we just borrowed a copy from the library to preview it & didn't actually buy a copy.

1-0 out of 5 stars Awful!
This cook book was awful! It didn't help me one bit when I started dealing with my child's food allergies.I thought the recipes would come without having to make all of these modifications on my own.I would never suggest this book to a friend! (OR a stranger for that matter!)

1-0 out of 5 stars Not good for dairy or eggs.
I am thankful that I borrowed this book from the library first.Almost EVERY recipe calls for butter, sour cream, milk, or egg.It is so bad it is almost funny.Example Buttermilk Pancakes - egg free variation:omit eggs.Dairy free variation - Replace milk with rice milk, and replace butter with margarine. All this book has is a collection of recipes that are not good for dairy allergic people with substitutions at the bottom of almost every recipe.I can do this with any recipe I don't need a special cookbook to tell me to replace milk with rice milk. When I read the cover of the book - More than 150 recipes that are:Wheat Free, Gluten Free, Dairy Free, Nut Free, Egg Free, and Low in sugar - I have to laugh.O and if you are allergic to nuts this book gives you some truly profound advice:Omit Nuts. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Keep your allergic child safe
These great flashcards make it easy to learn about caring for a child with a peanut allergy. The fun illustrations and format are perfect for teaching children at home or at school.I can go through a couple flashcards with my kids while they are eating snacks.

The flashcards are also great for caregivers, grandparents, and neighbors. They highlight places you might not think to find peanuts.Using these can absolutely help keep our allergic children safer.

5-0 out of 5 stars Now I have a better understanding of the peanut allergy
My co-worker has a child with a life-threatening peanut allergy. We would have conversations about her struggles when it came to leaving her child at school, with babysitters or even with family members. She shared these flashcards with me and it was a real eye opener. After flipping through the cards for ten minutes everything she had been talking to me about for the past year started making more sense. For instance, I would never have considered buying bulk food a danger but now I know that it is for those with peanut allergies.I now have a much greater understanding of why vigilance is necessary to keep her child safe.I would recommend these cards to anyone who around a child with these allergies. ...
