5-0 out of 5 stars Allergy Solution for Dogs
This is a great book!Very helpful!Received very quickly in great condition.I highly recommend this company for future purchases.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good book but vague
The book had a lot of information about getting your dog tested for allergies. We have, so half of the book was useless to us.There are some good points. It does tell you how to make your own food (and which vitamins you need to add) which I am trying to do to save money on the prescription food.Overall if you are questioning if you dog has allergies it would be more informative than if you know it already has them.

5-0 out of 5 stars good book
I think that Dr. Shawn has a good grip on taking care of your pet naturally and with the vet info available when needed.I prefer the natural path and he is very into that.I appreciate his care and research for naturally curing my pet.

5-0 out of 5 stars allery solutions for dogs
i very important book to help you figure out what ity is why your dog is chewing her/his opaws food and other things how to fixes

3-0 out of 5 stars Good book, but I still have questions
I was looking for a book that would help SOLVE my problems with dogs and allergies - this book just gives examples of what to look for (is it or is it not allergies) and suggests seeing the vet.Been there, done that - was looking for more creative ideas than seeing the vet and putting them on steroids (the standard prescription).I will keep looking for something to resolve my dogs' allergies and skin issues ... This extensively researched, comprehensive, plant-by-plant reference alerts gardeners and helps them make landscaping choices that can drastically reduce their exposure to harmful allergens. 5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent resource for the gardener, property owner.
Allergy-Free Gardening is an excellent companion to permaculture books. For anyone carefully planning their property for best use, it makes sense to have plants that don't make a person suffer with allergies.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must-have book for the allergy-suffering yard owner

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Allergy Book Ever!
This book should be read by every parent with a child who has food allergies. It tells you how to cope, survive and enjoy life with a child with food allergies. It is simply the best book written about children with food allergies.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good basic book, where's the prevention?
Typical allergy book. Well written.

Isn't it amazing that as advanced as our science has become that doctors have NO CLUE as to what causes allergies?

Think about this (and this quote is from the "Idiot's Guide" who also claimed that the cause of food allergies is unknown):

"In 1839, the French physiologist Francois Magendie (1783-1855), while investigating the effects of substances on living organisms, created allergylike symptoms in animals, and found that animals sensitized to egg white by injection died after a subsequent injection."

Did you vaccinate your child before s/he developed food allergies? Is there a link? Yes. If you vaccinate your child with peanut protein, she will develop a peanut allergy!

If you search on "trade secret", you will find that pharmaceutical companies do not list all the ingredients on the package insert. That food oils can be part of the adjuvant but don't appear on the list of ingredients. To find out what foods could have traces of food protein in the vaccine you will need to read patents. Search on "patent vaccine adjuvant" or "patent culture medium".

So what is happening is vaccines have trace amounts of foods such as beef, egg, chicken, rabbit, etc from the culture medium. They also have trace amounts of foods such as soy, corn, peanut, sesame, fish, shellfish, canola, wheat germ (about every oil known is used) that are in the mixed oils used in the adjuvant. So every vaccine will not have all the trace amounts of food protein. Some will have some of this. Others will have some of that. Some may even be totally free of trace amounts of food protein.

Bottom line. As a parent you have to make a choice, possibility of measles and mumps etc OR possibility of fatal food allergy. Pretty lousy choice.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Have For All Food Allergic Families

4-0 out of 5 stars one of my top 3 choices for allergy cookbook
The only reason I didn't rate it with 5 stars is because I do like the "Sophie Safe Cooking" a little bit better. However, this and it's prequel ("What's to Eat?) are both very good for moms who are new to allergen-free cooking.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Cooking Resource
I'm having to adjust my diet to accomodate for dairy/egg allergies.I love to cook but most of my recipes used at least one of these. Have found some great additions for entrees to replace stuff I can't eat anymore.I haven't had good results with her baking recipes (I've tried a couple) but the book was worth it for providing good menu additions for entrees and sides.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is a MUST HAVE Cookbook!
Whether you have a food allergy or not, you MUST get this cookbook.I'm a busy working mom who is challenged to quickly put together healthy and tasty homecooked meals for my food-allergic family.Linda's cookbooks have given me the solution. The recipes are easy with clear directions, and they come out great every time.I like that most recipes use everyday ingredients that we usually have on hand, and they are delicious!I also love that these recipes don't taste like "special allergy-safe dishes" that compromise on taste. Not at all! They are just good recipes for yummy dishes, and they happen to be safe for those with these allergies.I have a ton of cookbooks and love to cook... but seriously, I almost always use Linda's recipes, whether I'm cooking for my family, or a potluck, or a dinner party. And people always ask for the recipes.Try the Apricot Glazed Salmon, the Spinach and Apple Salad, the Iced Honey Cookies, the Fudge Filled Banana Muffins...the list goes on and on.Take the stress out of figuring out what to cook...buy this book (and Linda's first one). You will wonder how you ever lived without it.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must-have for families with these food allergies
This book, as well as her earlier cookbook, is fantastic!!My son has the dairy-egg-peanut allergy & my husband has a dairy allergy.I've never owned a cookbook that I could make every recipe in it & feed it to my family, and I was running out of new meal ideas when I found these books. There are wonderful cake & frosting recipes and recipes for all courses and occaisions. So many new and simple ideas of ways to prepare chicken, potatoes, rice, desserts and more!!If you have these food allergies in your house the only question is why don't you have this cookbook??!!I ordered this one along with her earlier one "What's to Eat" and I tell you, not one recipe is repeated.Order them both - you won't be disappointed!!

5-0 out of 5 stars our family loves this book
We have two children with food allergies and we all love Linda's cookbooks. The recipes are easy to make, tasty, and the kid's love them too. ... Read more

Product Description
Asthma and allergies are at epidemic proportions. It doesn't have to be that way.Two experienced pediatric allergists tell everything a conscientious parent needs to know about these conditions, the best in approved treatments, behavioral changes that can help control them, what families can do to reduce the toll that even severe asthma and allergies take on their lives, the myths and realities of alternative treatments and food allergies, skin allergies, advice for support groups, lists, checklists, and much, much more.

Fun and entertaining, almost every page is enlivened by anecdotes from the authors' decades of practice showing the special rapport that have made them so successful in getting results and keeping patients out of emergency rooms.

They make common cause with overworked pediatricians, general practitioners, and other primary care physicians who, because of the way our health care system is organized, are doing more asthma and allergy treatment than ever before.

But wait! There's still more! Asthma Allergies Children, the book, is half of a new approach to providing specialty asthma and allergy care.It is being published simultaneously with the launch of AsthmaAllergiesChildren.com, the new town square where parents and primary care physicians can pick the brains of specialists about their own children or patients. The website has mailbags for parents and doctors, pollen counts, news coverage, review of the latest developments in allergy science, "Tip of the Week" for controlling disease and discomfort, and guest editorials by the most important thinkers in the field.

The authors say that they and their colleagues recognize must do more to leverage their knowledge. The ranks of Allergy specialists are dwindling even as the numbers of asthmatic and allergic patients are rising. The cost is immense.Asthma is the single largest cause of school and work absence.Allergic and asthmatic children lose out on all the things that childhood is supposed to be about.

The book is the mother ship of the Asthma Allergies Children enterprise.Read about the connection between your child's nose and lungs, and how stopping allergy symptoms in the nose can reduce the danger of life-threatening asthma attacks; The hazards from chronic inflammation even when there are no visible symptoms; The damage to a child's body from over-reliance on "rescue" medication, and inadequate "control"; How modern technology can tell you if your child has been "naughty or nice"; The use and misuse of allergy testing, and how false positives can result in malnutrition in small children; The strengths and weaknesses of immunotherapy; The stages of an allergic life; and the most sympathetic and wisest advice ever to worried parents about managing a home where a child has severe allergies.

And because every child is special, go to the website to ask that special question.

Asthma Allergies Children: A Parent's Guide and AsthmaAllergiesChildren.com-a winning combination for helping your child lead a happier, healthier life.

A veritable bible for parents of allergic kids.I enjoyed Asthma Allergies Children tremendously. It is full of the kind of great stories that teach both patients and doctors more than mere facts. The science is explained in language you don't need an MD to follow. This book should be kept right next to the antihistamines and epinephrine, and used even more frequently.

5-0 out of 5 stars Important and thoughtful
Anyperson suffering with asthma (um, that would be me) or dealing with someone with asthma in the family, really needs this book.Asthma is at epidemic proportions and this book concisely and thoroughly tells you everything you need to know, and more--including cutting edge treatments and therapies.Even better, it's hooked up with a website. I've had asthma since I was five, and though I might think I am a smarty pants who knows all the answers, this book taught me many new things.I personally feel that illness has its own narrative, and the stories in this book can teach you in ways that drier information simply can't. This is an essential purchase.

5-0 out of 5 stars Essential Reading for Parents
Recently, we found that our daughter suffers from a severe nut-allergy. Looking at the available literature, we turned to `Asthma Allergies Children' because it seemed to strike a nice balance between three things we felt we needed. First, it provides enough of the scientific and medical background to be genuinely informative without swamping you with needless detail (we had a working knowledge of allergies before, but actually learned a lot from the book). Second, it is quite readable and provides striking real-life anecdotes to underscore theoretical points (nothing puts you in the requisite frame of mind so much as hearing what an anaphylactic shock feels like from the perspective of a child experiencing it). Third, the book is full of useful practical advice for parents of a child with asthma or allergies (get yourself a really nice vacuum cleaner and use it--daily if you can!). What we couldn't have known in advance is the wit and, more importantly, the utter humanity that shines through on every page of the book. It is written not only by professionals in the field but by parents and grandparents with a true understanding of the human cost of asthma and allergies. The book has become a constant reference point for our own evolving understanding of our daughter's affliction. We couldn't recommend it more. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Resource
I love this book.I am a retired family doctor, andhave been gifting it widely. Even when I am not sure the underlying cause of someone's GI distress, a trial of these recipes and a look at the author's material cannot go amiss....especially since they are TASTY, not drab and discouraging!

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Allergy Cookbook for Universities and Colleges
We were looking to expand our gluten-free menus for our students at Penn State Campus Dining. Lisa Lundy's cookbook has been an incredible resource for us. We sampled 14 recipes from the cookbook (cupcakes, cookies, mini-muffins, rolls, brownies, trail mix, and granola)with our staff and students. Resounding success! Here are some of their comments on the carrot cake and chocolate cupcakes; very moist, awesome, rich, moist, great flavor, super moist, great flavor, couldn't tell the difference. The chocolate chip cookies and brownie bites were also a big hit. Reviews for both items included; delicious! chewy & moist, super moist, can't tell they're GF. Our students and staff decided to add the cupcakes and mini muffins to our gluten-free program this spring. The granola bars, granola and trail mix were also big hits. I'd recommend this cookbook to anyone looking for delicious and easy GF recipes.

5-0 out of 5 stars MUST HAVE BOOK Part One of Book is Worth Every Penny
This book is an incredible source for information. The first 129 pgs. are worth every penny spent in obtaining this book. The rotation diet is layed out so easily that even my husband could follow it. I love the section that tells you what foods are in which family. The recipes are wonderful, but the author herself is even more wonderful. She has spent a great deal of time helping me, as my children have many different food allergies, especially to spices. I would recommend this book over any other, it truely is a MUST HAVE in your kitchen!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book!
This is a great book if your are new to the GF, CF diet. The history in the book is fabulous and so are the recipes!

2-0 out of 5 stars Would not recommend for those with Corn Allergies

5-0 out of 5 stars Worth it for the first few chapters!
I bought this several years ago while breastfeeding our eldest who had severe food allergies. The recipes are good - but the beginning sections, where the author talks about recipe substitutions and how various alternatives will work in modifying recipes, is the very best part of this cookbook! When I was overwhelmed parenting a newborn and dealing with her allergies as well, this book saved me time adjusting my diet to make it safe for my daughter without starving myself.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Good, Especially for beginners
This book was wonderful for me. I bought it based on the reviews of this book and many other Allergy cookbooks on Amazon and I couldn't be happier. The book is full of information on allergy, intolerance, grains and other foods which I found very helpful. The explanation of the rotary diet and sample menus is also helpful and works great for me. I'm glad someone else already did the leg work.So far every recipe I've tried has exceeded my expectations. All of my other attempts from other allergy recipes were just so-so. Of course no allergy cookbook can completely cover all of your personal allergies, I think this one does a good job of diversity and the author gives substitutions on some of the recipes. Highly recommend.

5-0 out of 5 stars Alternative flour education!
This book is an excellent one for baking if your child has an allergy to wheat. My child cannot tolerate kamut and spelt, which the author uses often, but the author almost always gives a list of 4 or 5 different flours that will also work with each recipe. And, she will make note, for example, if more or less liquid is called for if you use a different flour. If an egg is called for, she'll also give you a substitute.Very thorough.I've read a bazillion food allergy cookbooks, and this one by far is the most flexible.

4-0 out of 5 stars Try the crackers!
Part 1 is particularly useful, with well researched chapters on understanding and managing food allergies.People with multiple food allergies will still have to make some substitutions to many of these recipes, but Ms. Gioannini uses healthy ingredients, and has many inspired recipe ideas. My personal favorites are the recipes for Oat Crackers, Buckwheat Thins, and Flour Tortillas, all of which are safe for the majority of food allergy sufferers, and are often hard to find premade in stores. So try the crackers!

4-0 out of 5 stars Some good recipes, some "out there" recipes
I like this book, it's a little much in some cases, but generally worth the price. The one problem that I do have with it is that she has recipes that contain spelt and kamut flour. My daughter is allergic to wheat so spelt and kamut are not an option for us.The other issue I have with the book is that I never seem to have all the ingredients in my cupboards that she uses.I'm in a constant battle to keep things at hand with this one. However I do feel that the author has cooked these dishes, and eaten them herself and for the most part they do work.Which is not always the case in the allergy recipe world. ... Product Description
A food allergy is an immune system response to a food that the body mistakenly believes is harmful. Chemicals released by the immune system to protect the body trigger allergic reactions — varying widely from mild rashes to life-threatening anaphylactic shock. Often difficult to diagnose, food allergies can be lifetime afflictions — with no treatment other than avoiding the offending food. 5-0 out of 5 stars Dealing with Food Allergies
The rendition would be very helpful for any person attempting to deal
with internal inflammation deriving from foods and food allergies.
For instance, there may be a chronic immune response to lactose
i.e. lactose intolerance. Symptoms may include digestive diarrhea,
constipation, bloat and indigestion. Permeability of the
epithelium (gut) may lead to inflammation, combined allergies,
reactions after exercise - all due to eating the forbidden foods.
Anaphylactic reactions may occur in response to eating peanuts,
cow milk, egg, wheat with burning, itch, red skin and vomiting
symptomatology. MSG additives may tighten the face, jaw and chest.
The book is helpful in matching the unwelcome symptoms to the
foods which cause the symptoms to occur. Only when this has been
done, is it possible to eliminate certain types of chronic pain
related to foods that the body rejects.

5-0 out of 5 stars Better than my allergist
This book provide more information than my allergist bothered to tell me.I highly recommend to read it before you go to your doctor, even if you are just being tested for pollen, etc.I wish I would have found it before all the time and money spent at this particular doctor.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent for understanding food allergies
If you or your loved ones have food allergies..Buy this book. You won't be dissapointed. I was not. I use it as a reference in food trials and ingredient reading. It won't stay on the shelf. This is a book you can use over and over again. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Exceptionally thorough, very informative, absolutely helpful!
This is a valuable cookbook for me, as I have had to alter my diet completely to eliminate milk products as a result of my nursing son's milk allergies. However, I was delighted to discover that it is much more than a cookbook!

The first several chapters address dairy and dairy-free from a health perspective, explaining things like the make-up of cow's milk and other commercially available mammal milks; what lactose-free, A2, and acidophilus milks and kefir are; what is pasteurization and homogenization; milk's effects on various health issues such as lactose intolerance, ADHD, autism, and weight loss; good sources of calcium; and infant and childhood milk allergies.Everything is well-researched well-explained.

There are chapters on how to be dairy-free when eating away from home, on the road, back to school, and eating with friends and family, as well as how to go grocery shopping and what to stock up on, including helpful sample grocery lists and what ingredients on food labels are milk-derived.There are very specific lists of all kinds of "okay" foods, along with information on how to contact the companies that make them.

There is invaluable information on good dairy substitutes (some that you can purchase pre-made from a store, others that you can make following a recipe) and lots of just good recipes and meal ideas.

At the end, there are a couple chapters on other good resources for being dairy-free!

I love this book! The only thing that would make it better would be pictures. There are no pictures in this book, which I think would be helpful for the recipes. However, there are libraries of information contained in this book, and all the suggested recipes and foods have been tested by personal experience by the author and everything is very good!I haven't found a recipe yet that I didn't like!

5-0 out of 5 stars Dairy Replacements!
This book, Go Dairy Free, is all about making your own dairy replacements. For instance you can make sweetened condensed milk by using coconut milk. There is really a lot to be said about this book as it is like a teaching book for people with milk alergies and lactose intolerance. It teaches you how to shop, stock, and cook lactose free. It teaches you all about why your body rejects dairy and the symptoms of lactose intolerance. This book is a great help in learning to live without dairy and includes many helpful recipes.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Delivery and Book
Item was shipped and arrived quicker than expected. The book was extremely useful full of facts and information about having a milk allergy and great cooking ideas and suggestions.

5-0 out of 5 stars Helpful and Very Encouraging
I found Go Dairy Free to not only be extremely helpful in describing what dairy-free living is all about; but it was very encouraging as well. It's tough to change your life and eating habits when you discover that you are allergic to milk; and the author sympathsizes with you. However, she doesn't just join in a food pity-party. In an upbeat and positive way, the author explains the dos and don'ts of dairy-free living and brings the concept to reality. I love, love, love the helpful lists and advice she gives about milk substitues and how she has developed recipes for things like cream of mushroom soup and condensed milk to replace those ingredients in our favorite family recipes. There are tons of other delicious recipes too! Overall, I rated this book 5 stars because it is the only one I've found for dairy-free living that is easy to read/understand and gives me hope that it is possible to live dairy-free and enjoy life to the fullest. Dairy-free living isn't scary when you have this book as a reference guide!

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Dairy-Free Resouce Out There!
This is the most comprehensive resource available for anyone wanting or needing to eat dairy-free or for anyone just wanting to cook for someone they love that can't eat dairy.

Author Alisa Flemming takes a very conservative, level headed approach and shares research based information that you can trust. She also provides a wealth of the very best dairy free on-line resources that you can uses *for free* on a daily basis.

The subtitle indicates that this is a guidebook & cookbook - both of which are correct. The guidebook portion acts as a 'tour guide' if you will, walking the reader through the different issues people experience with dairy and provides reasonable, affordable solutions. The cookbook includes everything from appetizers to desserts with a wealth of recipes that are perfect for every day.

I refer to this book on a regular basis for information, alternatives, and recipes.I know that anyone who purchases it will feel the same.

5-0 out of 5 stars Thank YOU!!
I got the books and have started reading them. They are great!I know these are going to be really helpful for me.Eating out can be really tricky as you know, but these books really simplify things to a level I haven't seen in any other resource.Just wanted to say thanks again!

3-0 out of 5 stars Great for Allergic Newbies
We have been dealing with my son's food allergies since he was a baby (7 years) and so much of what was in the book is already "old hat" to us (whether we're at home or in a restaurant). For someone who is dealing with allergies for the first time, it is nice to have the steps so easily laid out, but for those who already know the game, it's already very familiar.I'm not sure the book offered great benefits to our family at this stage; however, it would have been useful several years ago.

5-0 out of 5 stars Versatile guide
"Let's Eat Out!" is a wonderful guide that offers information to a wide range of individuals, not just those with special diets. This book and its supplemental "passports" teach about a variety of ethnic cuisines that would make even the pickiest eaters venture out and expand their dietary choices.

4-0 out of 5 stars Dining advice for gluten-averse people and their friends
I bought this as a gift for my daughter, who is allergic to gluten and a vegetarian (now, THERE'S a tough combo).

She loves the book.

1-0 out of 5 stars Useless to me!
I bought this book thinking it would be of great help to me.I found it to be absolutely useless. There are so many other valuable tools to use and informative books out there that I can only say - use your common sense - you know what you can and can't have & all you have to do is ask the server to check in the kitchen to make sure that thee either isn't, or won't be, any gluten ingredients used.I live very near NYC and I can name so many gluten free restaurants that weren't included that it's ridiculous. Don't waste your money. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Good starting point
I think this book is a GREAT starting point.I personally DO NOT agree with the previous reviewer on the elimination diet being the gold standard. We have 2 children with multiple food allergies and the elimination diet HAS NOT worked for us due to the number of foods we are dealing with. I think this book is good because it talks about several types of reactions and several types of testing.MOST doctors only recognize IGE blood testing BUT you need more than that and this book explains it fairly well.

3-0 out of 5 stars Decent starting point
This book is a decent starting point for one who wants to know the basics about delayed food allergies. It's a very quick read with good lists of common allergens and some scientific background on the condition. What I don't like is that the author continuously pushes some controversial blood tests instead of the elimination diet, which is the gold standard (and an inexpensive one at that) for uncovering food allergies. Also, the book isn't very professional looking. It appears to be something that the authors self-published. If you really want to know about food allergies, "Food Allergies and Food Intolerance" is a better option. It covers the subject much more extensively and describes how to do an elimination diet.

I went on an elimination diet after reading this and have so far found that I am allergic to milk, corn, and soy. By avoiding those allergens, I have easily lost 20 lbs (and 2 inches off my waist), I have much more energy, my mood is significantly better, my knees don't continually ache anymore, my food cravings and constant hunger are gone, and my bladder irritation has resolved. In short, I feel better than I have ever felt. Although not everyone will see results like this, I think anyone with nagging chronic health problems should give the elimination diet a try, as it can't hurt, and the only real cost is having to cook just about every meal for a few weeks, which I consider a trivial cost compared to the gains I have seen. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars My Dog-earred Standby
I bought this book many years ago when it was called Five Years Without Food.My children suffer from multiple food sensitivities and environmental illness. Tthis book has been invaluable for maintaining an interesting rotation diet.It is not meant for folks who have just a few food allergies or are only gluten/casein free--you will probably disappointed. If you need to keep your foods separate without introducing too many ingredients into a recipe, this is a wonderfully helpful book.I have almost exclusively used this book for our grain baking and dessert needs. This book has also helped me understand how to come up with my own recipes by substituting foods that we can eat, for some that we can't.These recipes are flexible and can be customized as needed. And yes, we have Kangaroo on our diet out of necessity, also Camel.

5-0 out of 5 stars I use this book all the time for breads/grains/pancakes
I have looked all over for allergy cookbooks without much success except for Nicolette Dumke's books.I use this book all the time for baking/breads/desserts.

My seven year old daughter has multiple food allergies but gets shots that allow her to eat a core set of foods. However, there are still many foods that she can't eat.She actually can't eat many of the alternative foods used in the book, but can eat enough grains that I can use this book to give her some baked goods without yeast, baking powder, or eggs. The recipes are easy to modify slightly to fit other needs even for those of us who don't consider ourselves "good" cooks.I make the pancake and muffin recipes often and use the pancakes for "sandwich" bread since they are so much less crumbly than other non-yeast breads. We even tried a modified version of the almost-normal German Chocolate Cake, which she liked quite a lot. I put chopped peaches in the barley muffins (made with butter because we can't use oils) and they taste a lot like peach cobbler.Yum.Even her classmates like these muffins. If you are hungry for something made with grains, this book has recipes that work!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Resources for Complex Food Allergies
This book includes great information about the diagnosis and treatment of complex food allergies, as well as a wide variety of recipes for special diets. One of the features that I like best is that the recipes include a wide variety of substitution options so that you may individualize the recipe to your unique food restrictions. This book met the need I had to adapt my daughter's allergic food restrictions to her decision to become a vegetarian. After reviewing this most recent of Nickie's books, combined with her older ones, I was able to develop enough new recipe ideas to help my daughter comply with her increased diet restrictions. The new recipes added much desired variety and they tasted great. Two of the most fun surprises in this book included cranberry sauce on page 126 (which I chose to sweeten with date sugar) and kiwi sorbet on 201 (which I chose to sweeten with stevia).

5-0 out of 5 stars beats all other allergy cookbooks, hands down
For people with many severe allergies to foods, this is the most comprehensive, best-organized cookbook I have found. It is clearly written, well-researched and informative without resorting to hype, and the recipes clearly have been kitchen-tested.The drawbacks of some recipes are noted (e.g., some alternative grain recipes are more crumbly or dense than recipes using wheat flour).Sources for unusual foods are listed; and the internet provides a great marketpalce for finding the rest.I found it easy to adapt the basic rotation diet to fit the foods I can tolerate best and purchase locally and online.

The author has done us a great favor by turning her many trials with allergies into a treasure-trove for the rest of us in the same boat. She not only groups foods by phylogenetic families to alert to possible cross-reactivity, but also mentions the newer, emerging findings on pollen-food interactions due to non-genetic similarity of protein forms.Best of all, instead of leaving the reader feeling hopeless in the face of so many potential cross-reactions, she outlines a workable way to cope.

4-0 out of 5 stars Lots of resources and info
My young daughter has food allergies, so I ordered this book specifically for help with the rotation diet. This is the only book I could even find WITH a rotation diet and it has lots of good ideas for people who suffer from food allergies. I do recommend it. ... Read more

Amazon.com Review
Few things are scarier than witnessing a child having an allergic reaction, whether it manifests itself as wheezing or life-threatening anaphylaxis.Parents will do anything to avoid having their child suffer such a reactionagain, but treading the line between being prepared and being paranoid can be tricky. The Parent's Guide to Food Allergies was written by a team of people who shared theirexpertise from the medical lab and the kitchen; two M.D.s and one Ph.D.collaborated with author Marianne Barber, the mother of afood-allergic son, who writes with a personal slant so often absent frommedical guides. Barber understands the daily coping skills that are needed when living with an allergic child, from banning particular foods entirely to reading ingredient labels.

Especially common allergens like peanuts, wheat, and eggs merit separatechapters, while other foods are treated more generally. Each of thefood-specific chapters includes a list of ways that the ingredients can"hide" in processed foods. Once you learn that milk also goes byhydrolysate, and that one of wheat's many aliases is seitan, you'll realizethe importance of careful reading. The chapter titled "Hidden Allergens" expands on thistheme, and while Barber does an excellent job of detailing the possible hidingplaces, she says, "careful labeling is well and good, but it doesn'teliminate the need for a judgment call on your part." There's also a chapter on anaphylaxis, in which the realities of living with Epi-pens and liquidantihistamines are faced in a kind, straightforward manner. A specialrecipe section includes enjoyable treats for the whole family that are baked with wheat-free flour, milk-free margarine, and applesauceinstead of eggs. (The spice cake with fresh fruit is a delicious treat.)

At once gentle and authoritative, Barber's book is an excellent guidethrough the maze of childhood allergies. --Jill Lightner ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Better resources are available.
I wasn't very happy with this book.I found a few helpful pointers, but overall the views were sort of extreme, and some of the advice was very contrary to what physicians have told us.If anybody I knew was reading this, I'd suggest they take it with a grain of salt and get several other viewpoints as well.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book really helped!
When I found out my 9 month old son had severe food allergies, I was overwhelmed. The doctor said he couldn't eat wheat, egg, peanuts, milk, and several other foods, but never gave me practical advice on how to cope with this new lifestyle. This book really helped us figure out how to start introducing new foods, and how to shop for acceptable foods in the grocery store. The best feature is that there is a separate chapter on all the common food allergies. Each chapter starts with a list of all items you could see on a food label that would be dangerous if you have that allergy. For example, the chapter on milk lists things like casein, ghee, hydrolysates as well as about two dozen other things milk-allergic people should avoid.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Book, My allergy bible
This was the first book I bought after learning my son had severe food allergies. This book was and still is a godsend! It is very well written with just enough detail but easy to read/understand.It is a wealth of information, with practical tips, valuable facts, and written with a good sense of humor ... from one Mom to another.Thank you so much for helping me (and our whole family) get a handle on this huge learning curve. It helped me to mentally and emotionally educate and prepare myself, re-organize my pantry and shopping, and learn to live w/ this major adjustment and philosophy in cooking, shopping, reading, and eating.I just wish she would write a follow-up book ... and with more recipes.I need help with the cooking part ... It's so hard to bake without eggs.Thank you!!

3-0 out of 5 stars A good place to start...
This is the first book I read when my son was diagnosed with multiple food allergies. It's a good starting point, but not the best book on the market. The author's child has a severe peanut allergy so the tips given are mainly for a severe peanut allergy. For those of us who have severe allergies and are avoiding the top 8 allergens plus additional foods - the help this book offers is limited.

This cookbook is outstanding..easy to follow, yummy meals and so helpful!!! I wish they had another one out!!!

2-0 out of 5 stars Looks nice.
I had good hopes for this book, it was the first allergy cook book that I've bought. None of the recipes I've tried have worked too well. And of course there are very expensive ingredients. It does have a handy section of substitutions and flour blends, lots of good information too. But overall I haven't used this book much.

4-0 out of 5 stars Pretty Good.
I bought this book as a gift for my sister who's child has MAJOR allergies and she seems to just love it- I was a little disappointed with what it said for substitutions though- it was all stuff she already knew! But she still likes it!

3-0 out of 5 stars Book has good layout
The book was easier to read than some of the others on the same topic because there was more white space on the pages and larger print. The chapter on preventing food allergies is of little value. She refers to the "hygiene theory" (that says be are basically too clean) and feeding the baby solids too soon being the cause. She seems ignorant of the possibility that the trace amounts of food protein in vaccines (mixed vegetable and animal oils used in the vaccine adjuvant) could be the primary cause of food allergies. The book has chapters on different food allergies and suggestions on coping.

4-0 out of 5 stars Extremely Helpful
Dr.Joneja made a very difficult situation easier. As a first time mom my newborn son was having terrible stomach issues from foods I was eating and the proteins in my breast milk. With guidance from the book we were able to identify the problem and work towards solving it.I am very grateful to have found this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great
My son, who just turned 1, is actually milk protein intolerant.I am very lucky it isn't a true allergy, but it is still very difficult to deal with. This book made me feel as if I had more of a handle on the situation. It helped me to understand the actual scientific/physiological reasons for allergies/intolerances.While reading this book, it became clear my son has other intolerances/allergies that I have not yet identified (which was my hunch). The information on how allergies manifest and their symptoms and signs was helpful in that it made me know that all these things that I have been noticing are not me being a paranoid mother. It is difficult for doctors to see the whole picture when you take them in on different days for say, irritability, tickly ears, stomach upset, etc. This book helped me to put it all together.I highly recommend it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Fresh food NOT good for you ?
Indeed in many cases a particular healthy fresh food may be detrimental to your little one.As a nurturing parent you clean, cuddle, and feedyour child. But you sence that there is something wrong.A differential diagnosis to be considered is food allergy.Food allergy and intolerance is more prevalent than you might guess ( 8%).Unfortunately not recognizing it causes the affected child distress.A 15 minute visit with the doctor may prove beneficial. But there is no single reliable lab test that can prove that a child is intolerant to a spreific food or additive.Specialty consultations are in order. And thats where this well written functional book fits in.Comprehensive chapters range through symptoms - detection - diagnosis - prevention - treatment.Celiac disease, autism, eczema, atypical behavior are just a few conditions which are highlighted.Dozens of diets and specific food allergies are detailed in this informative book.Step by step processes are explained by a very well qualified author. She presents methods for analyzing and treating problems, never losing sight of the child's nutritional needs.

3-0 out of 5 stars Okay
This book is ok, though I have found many bits of information that are either outdated or just plain misleading.Like recommending clarified butter for use if you should not have dairy. That may work for a small number of people with minor allergies who happen to get some that is 100% casein free, but it is very unlikely. There was also a doom and gloom attitude about the dangers of a restricted diet while breastfeeding and not a lot of support about sticking with it as being the best thing for your child.Plus outdated information on recommended breastfeeding guidelines and a lack of practical advice for living with food allergies and the emotional aspect of sticking to it made this book not worth owning, IMO.There are much better out there. So use common sense and research more in this book before you follow the recommendations. ... Product Description
Millions of children across the country have food sensitivities or allergies, and the number is on the rise. And most of these children don?t get to eat cookies, for fear of the reaction they might have from the wheat, or the peanuts.

This book?s recipe?s take into account all of the most common food sensitivities like wheat and gluten, peanuts, or dairy. Each recipe can be modified to fit the dietary needs of the child.

Divided into three sections-- snacks, main dishes, and treats--this book also provides information about how to find what you need in a regular grocery store, instead of requiring a separate trip to the natural foods store.

With the recipes in this book, even the most sensitive child will get a cookie too. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for people just learning how to cook round allergies!
I like this book for when I have friends over with food allergies. I am GF and am always looking for quick recipes. I like that they have options for replacements in case I have friends with kids over that have allergies. This was not made to be a 5 star cookbook, just a basic no picture grouping of quick easy recipes. Yes a couple suck, but won't all cookbooks have a couple of them?

1-0 out of 5 stars it only got one star because you must click at least one star
Don't buy this book. Here...let me save you the time and money and energy. Take any "kid friendly" recipe you want and make the substitutions as follows:
for egg...use an egg substitute
for milk...use a milk substitute
for wheat...use a wheat substitute
for butter...use margarine
for a nut allergy...don't use nuts
to make it low in sugar...use less sugar
to make it gluten free...don't use gluten
There. I just saved you $15. These are by far the most absurd recipes and substitution I have ever seen in my life. Oh and the taste...YUK...even without the substitutions.
There is nothing that teaches one how to make these substitutions...for example
for egg...use banana, applesauce, pumpkin, baking soda & vinegar, ground flaxseeds & water to name a few.
for milk...there are nut milks, oat milk, hemp milk, rice milk, and soy milk use as a one to one (rice and almond milks tend to be a little more liquidy so you may want to cut back)
for wheat...well...there are quite a few recipes online ranging from quinoa, rice, soy, oat flours...it is trial and error depending on what you need and what you like and what you are using it for...a blend is better then just one.
for butter...most of the time you can use margarine but I prefer flax seed oil some prefer coconut oil
low in sugar...I use fruit purees...some people like using alternative sugars (honey, barley malt) some use apple juice concentrate.
Look at that...less then one page and already more informative then that whole book.
seriously...don't buy this book.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not dairy free
Probably a good cookbook if you need to be wheat or gluten free, but otherwise, forget it.The cover is very misleading as almost all recipes include dairy or eggs or both, and the suggested substitute for any cheese is a soy imitation.I think if they just removed the list of the supposedly allergy-free items from the cover, then one wouldn't be so surprised and disappointed, as many allergy cookbooks are not for all allergies.

1-0 out of 5 stars misleading - not allergen-free
I checked this book out from the library before purchasing and was very glad that I did not waste my money. For a similar value, just pick up any standard cookbook and omit your allergens when cooking. (Allergic to gluten? Simply use GF flour. Allergic to eggs? Leave them out. Allergic to dairy? Use soy. Allergic to soy? Well, you're on your own with that one. Hmmm... maybe just... leave that out too?)

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't waste your money. . .these recipes are poor quality!
I bought this book when my son was first diagnosed with an egg and nut allergy.First of all, if your child has these allergies and no others, don't even bother because the substitutions are just like "omit nuts" or "use ener-g egg replacer".Really? That's not too creative, folks.I don't need a special cookbook for that. And am I really going to make a quiche with egg replacer? These recipes are more geared toward eliminating gluten, and the other allergies are more of an afterthought.

The other thing I have noticed about these recipes is that the instructions are poorly written.Unless you are an experienced cook/ baker and can figure out things like you need to mix the dry ingredients separately or that granola bars without salt are going to taste disgusting, you are going to end up with some flops.I can say that every recipe of the 5 or 6 I have made from this book has left me disappointed, and many of the recipes I can just look at and tell they are not going to be good.Where was the editor and the test kitchen on these- seriously! How can one write a cookbook without testing the recipes extensively- Betty Crocker would be ashamed. You will be much better off with some recipes from the blogosphere, such as food allergy mama and the gluten free goddess. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Pet Allergies
Very informative, but the material is quite dated and certainly should be time to update this book. If it was updated it would rate 5 stars.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great vet, great info
I used Dr. Plechner as a vet several years ago when my Aussie mix was throwing up every morning. He gave me the book, which explained a lot, and after a while on the duck and sweet potato dog food (I joked about her gourmet meals costing more than mine), she improved.Great vet, and I learned a tremendous amount about not only what to feed -- or avoid feeding - any of my dogs, but also about the irresponsible breeding practices which cause the problem... and how to test for the genetic health of an animal before I adopt.Excellent resource.

5-0 out of 5 stars Pet Allergies
This book has saved two of my standard poodles from epiletic seizures just by following the basic suggestions on diet. I am so lucky to have found it and have ordered many copies for friends

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Reference Book on Pet Allergies!
This book is an excellent reference book if you have a pet with allergies. The information is not only current and forward-thinking, but easy to understand as well.It actually explains why the problem exists and what to do about it.It also supplies a guide to Veterinarians regarding the proper testing and treatment of the animal.I am purchasing 4 more copies to give to several vets in my area.I highly recommend it!

1-0 out of 5 stars Out of date
The information contained within this book was extremely out of date with a strong emphasis on steroids. It is a shame there are not more current and useful books for pet owner out there on this widespread problem.

Product Description

It's a world we barely see, but it is teeming with life. In the dust of a typical house, carpet beetles, mites, silverfish, and other creatures live and die, producing new generations every few months. Mold, bacteria, and yeast lurk undetected in heating and cooling systems. Debris dispersed into the air from these organisms can cause runny noses, itchy eyes, coughing, headaches, and breathing difficulties. Some people, especially those made highly sensitive by allergies, suffer from devastating health problems and the worry that, as one such sufferer lamented, "My house is killing me!"

Scrutinizing house dust and air samples with a microscope, indoor air quality expert Jeffrey C. May has spent his career helping people identify what's causing their chronic health problems. In My House Is Killing Me! he draws on the dramatic personal stories of his clients' suffering and relief to help readers understand the links between environmental factors and problems like allergies and asthma. Explaining how air conditioning, finished basements, and other home features affect air quality, he offers a step-by-step approach to identifying, controlling, and often eliminating the sources of indoor pollutants and allergens. If we could see this contamination, May observes, the air would look as murky as stagnant water, and we would know not to breathe it.

Reading My House Is Killing Me! lets you see your house the way an expert would. Just as he looks at spaces and systems during an indoor air quality investigation, May focuses first on the areas of daily life (bedrooms, bathrooms, kitchen), then looks into attics and basements (including heating and air conditioning), and finally moves outside to the garage and the exterior of a home. Along with offering a wealth of practical advice and proven solutions for various problems, he includes a glossary of terms and a list of valuable resources.

5-0 out of 5 stars Useful advice and usable reference
The funny thing about the book is that the title sounds very alarmist. And while it does tell a few horror stories, most of the book is about providing information. It is far less sensationalistic than the title implies. I read it first as an education about air quality. Then we used it to recommend solutions in an air quality crisis. Now I use it mainly as a reference guide when I have a question and can't remember something.

I originally purchased this book a few years ago when I was having problems with allergies and found problems with the HVAC system in our home. Thanks to implementing key parts of his advice, our air quality significantly improved as evidenced by our health issues subsiding. We were spending time at doctors offices weekly or every other week. After we fixed some of the problems in our house (using the book's advice), we found ourselves rarely at the doctor (a few times per year). No more ear tubes for the kids either (we had gone through 4 sets already).

I have lent this book and recommended this book to friends. We recently moved and find ourselves needing to make minor changes to improve the air quality in our new (yet older) home. This book is a great reference----I break it out and remind myself what things to consider and where problems can occur (as well as ways to solve the problems).

As an added bonus, it helps to be better educated about air quality when dealing with HVAC, insulation, and other service professionals----you can select the companies more effectively, and make decisions more easily. How often can one book help out in all those ways?Great book.Worthwhile purchase.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Ideas for Reducing Household Allergens and Chemicals
May's book offers helpful tips to reduce exposure to allergens and chemicals throughout your home. He reminds you to check places that are often overlooked, such as the drain pan under the refrigerator, the drain pan for your A/C unit, and duct work. Something as simple as your old couch might be the trigger for many symptoms. This book is a good start for someone who wants to try anything they can to reduce their chemical and allergen load.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book - a must have to buy an older house!
I bought this book a couple of years ago when I started my house hunting. It has helped me tremendously - especially it opened my eyes to most of the typical problems that older houses have in the area I am living in. As a result, I avoided many problematic houses/deals. I strongly recommend this book to anyone who wants to buy a house in New England area!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Refrence
This book has been used as a refrence guide once we found we had mold in the house. When we called up several companies to get quotes we knew what to ask, which equipment they should use, how they should go about cleaning etc.

It helped us make a better choice, make sure we weren't wasting our money and get informed about the subject.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must read if you have allergies
This book has certainly opened our eyes as to what allergens can exist that one would never dream were in their home. It is so totally awesome and explicit with explainations. It's a must read for anybody who has known allergies or even suspects possible allergies. It will surprise you what can be causing your health issues. The culprit may be allergens in your home, in your yard, in your vehicle. ... Read more
