5-0 out of 5 stars Dealing with Food Allergies
The rendition would be very helpful for any person attempting to deal
with internal inflammation deriving from foods and food allergies.
For instance, there may be a chronic immune response to lactose
i.e. lactose intolerance. Symptoms may include digestive diarrhea,
constipation, bloat and indigestion. Permeability of the
epithelium (gut) may lead to inflammation, combined allergies,
reactions after exercise - all due to eating the forbidden foods.
Anaphylactic reactions may occur in response to eating peanuts,
cow milk, egg, wheat with burning, itch, red skin and vomiting
symptomatology. MSG additives may tighten the face, jaw and chest.
The book is helpful in matching the unwelcome symptoms to the
foods which cause the symptoms to occur. Only when this has been
done, is it possible to eliminate certain types of chronic pain
related to foods that the body rejects.

5-0 out of 5 stars Better than my allergist
This book provide more information than my allergist bothered to tell me.I highly recommend to read it before you go to your doctor, even if you are just being tested for pollen, etc.I wish I would have found it before all the time and money spent at this particular doctor.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent for understanding food allergies
If you or your loved ones have food allergies..Buy this book. You won't be dissapointed. I was not. I use it as a reference in food trials and ingredient reading. It won't stay on the shelf. This is a book you can use over and over again. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The best book for those with allergies!!!
My child has severe dairy allergies and this book helped me with so much.I now carry his medicine/epi pen in a special bag with all the vital information. Also, this book helped me to know that we are not alone and it gave me so much great information when going places with my child, even to friends/family.I recommend this book to anyone who has just discovered their child has allergies.A must have!!!

3-0 out of 5 stars Disappointed..
I wasn't too impressed with this book. While it had a lot of info in it, I learned more through my research online. I expected a lot more from this book based on the preview and other reviews.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent - even for moms experienced with food allergies
I've been living with a severely food allergic child (milk, eggs, nuts, soy) for eight years, and have subscribed to the FAN newsletter all that time, so I am hardly a newbie when it comes to food allergies. And I just LOVE this book. I was pleasantly surprised by the wealth of completely practical information it contained. She has excellent ideas for traveling with a food allergic child. Her recommendations about making your home a safe zone and letting your child play at other homes are spot on.Her comments about school and outings are great. She doesn't miss a thing. And I gained lots of ideas, like having a separate section of the freezer for "Becca-safe" foods, that are making my life easier.

I love her tone, too.She is clear and easy to understand. She is so realistic, and so calm, "Don't expect too much from other people" is so true, because even well-intentioned people just make mistakes.Unfortunately, you always have to be on guard.

One option she did NOT mention regarding school lunches is for your child to sit at a tray table placed at the end of the cafeteria table. This is what my child is doing, plus they do not let children drinking milk or eating yougurt or "spillable" dairy products sit near her.So far, this has worked well for our daughter.

My daughter is now eight, and she is starting to seem depressed about her food allergies, and I would have loved more information about how to help her deal with the emotional aspects of food allergies. And perhaps more information about what to expect when she reaches puberty, the age when some kids start to be rebellious and to take risks.Although, the author was writing from personal experience and her son outgrew his dairy allergy at age 11.5 (so there is hope yet, dear Becca), so perhaps that is why the book ends where it does.

Anyway, this is the number one book I will recommend to parents of children who are newly diagnosed with food allergies - and even those who have been dealing with it for a while but want some new ideas or advice about specific problems.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Advice for Mothers of Food Allergic children
Of all the allergy books I have read, yours is the only one that advised us as a Mom! So many tips and information that are so very important, but not so obvious. I am delighted to tell you we have had a safe, accidental exposure-free experience thus far with my son's life threatening allergies, and I feel this book is the main reason. My allergist is great, but he doesn't give all the day to day hints and information you have provided. Thank you for your book!

4-0 out of 5 stars Scary but informative
The book does provide some good information and some other things to consider as you deal with your child's allergies. However, I do find that it tends to a bit extremist in some cases. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Good, good
I previously purchased this book, used it successfully, and then lent it(much marked up) to someone (don't remember who)and now I need it again. I didn't follow the program 100%, but it did work. I was on allergy shots, and had asthma symptoms at certain times of the year depending on what was blooming. This book worked for me, and I have tried a lot of them.

2-0 out of 5 stars Missing the point
Another book that I felt had very little to offer that was not already out there. For the past fifteen years, I coughed every morning and night with disrupted sleeping and resulting fatigue. It was a breathing method called Buteyko that changed this.

That is whre this book falls - it does not explore overbreathing which is a significant part of asthma. If you have allergies or asthma- look at Buteyko. Many books exist that offer self help. These are the only ones I feel will help asthma.

My point is unless a book addresses breathing volume, it will never solve asthma.

Do your own research.

4-0 out of 5 stars Intriging
I read this book with very great interest. It's the most promising and sensible approach I've seen to addressing the allergy and digestive problems I've been having for many years, which my own doctors have by trying ineffectively to treat by drugging the symptoms into submission.I intend to try the program.

However, I expect to have some trouble talking my doctors into supporting this.Pescatore appears to have developed his "cure" based on a lot of clinical trial and error and some guesswork based on a rough theory that the problems are all rooted in leaky gut and candida yeast overgrowth. That kind of clinical approach is very valuable, but it takes more than that to really convince the medical community.Pescatore appears to have choosen to market his method directly to consumers via popular books and TV talk shows, rather than market it to the medical community via formal clinical studies or experimental research.Much of his suggested treatment is going to be questioned by the mainstream medical community. For instance, does it really make sense to eliminate all sugar from your diet when your body makes its own sugar from the foods you eat, so there will always still be lots of sugar in the bloodstream?Still, I have seen some medical research from other sources that hints that there really is something to his approach. For now, his approach may be the best available, though many of it's details are unproven.

I also find it slightly off-puttingthat when I go to the store to get the macadamia nut oil that he heartly recommends, I find the oil is sold by him.(Though it really is good and healthy and was probably hard to get before he started marketing it.)When I go to the web site of the blood test company he recommends, there's his ringing endorsement.Pescatore Inc is there wherever I go.

He's certainly not nearly as bad as other "show doctors" who build financial empires on dubious weightloss theories. His book clearly distinguishes between established medical fact and his own approaches. He's clearly aware of mainstream medical research and has been integrating it into his approach as far as possible. There's no crystal waving here. It's not quite science, but it's close, and it's may be the best we are going to get for a while. And his suggested treatment is, at the very least, less likely to do harm than all the medications my doctors have been suggesting.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good approach, but be sure to add magnesium
There is significant evidence that, although factors discussed in this book are important, the root cause of most cases of asthma (and many allergies as well) is deficiency of magnesium. This fact is discussed in detail by Dr. Carolyn Dean in her excellent book The Miracle of Magnesium. Dr. Dean recommends 600 mg of supplemental magnesium daily. People with asthma who follow Dr. Dean's advice about daily magnesium supplementation often improve dramatically even if they have continued to struggle with asthma under other treatments which omit magnesium supplementation. If you are suffering from asthma please read Dr. Dean's excellent book and follow her advice regarding daily magnesium supplementation. It may well be the most important thing you will ever due to relieve this terrible ailment. By the way, although a variety of magnesium supplements are available, and beneficial, chelated magnesium -- which is readily available in most health food stores -- is the most effective.

5-0 out of 5 stars It really works
I had been getting more and more allergic every year.Last year I developed asthma, and kept up with an intense schedule by using inhalers, a lot!Even though I gave up dairy and wheat, they continued to get worse, finally to the point where I had hives and welts from touching my books (a little microscopic mold, I suppose). That was the last straw and I bought this book and followed it for 3.5 months now.I went from using inhalers 3 times a day to 0.I can hug my cats again, where I would cough when they walked into the room with me before.I had some patches of eczema on the elbows that is gone, and I finally have some get up and go again.

If you feel despair of having your body literally self destruct with allergic reactions, follow this program with ALL of the pertinent supplements (3 handfuls a day for me), and get your health back! ... Read more

Few things are scarier than witnessing a child having an allergic reaction, whether it manifests itself as wheezing or life-threatening anaphylaxis. Parents will do anything to avoid having their child suffer such a reaction again, but treading the line between being prepared and being paranoid can be tricky. The Parent's Guide to Food Allergies was written by a team of people who shared their expertise from the medical lab and the kitchen; two M.D.s and one Ph.D. collaborated with author Marianne Barber, the mother of a food-allergic son, who writes with a personal slant so often absent from medical guides. Barber understands the daily coping skills that are needed when living with an allergic child, from banning particular foods entirely to reading ingredient labels.

Especially common allergens like peanuts, wheat, and eggs merit separate chapters, while other foods are treated more generally. Each of the food-specific chapters includes a list of ways that the ingredients can "hide" in processed foods. Once you learn that milk also goes by hydrolysate, and that one of wheat's many aliases is seitan, you'll realize the importance of careful reading. The chapter titled "Hidden Allergens" expands on this theme, and while Barber does an excellent job of detailing the possible hiding places, she says, "careful labeling is well and good, but it doesn't eliminate the need for a judgment call on your part." There's also a chapter on anaphylaxis, in which the realities of living with Epi-pens and liquid antihistamines are faced in a kind, straightforward manner. A special recipe section includes enjoyable treats for the whole family thatare baked with wheat-free flour, milk-free margarine, and applesauce instead of eggs. (The spice cake with fresh fruit is a delicious treat.)

At once gentle and authoritative, Barber's book is an excellent guide through the maze of childhood allergies. --Jill LightnerBook Description
Foreword by Hugh Sampson, M.D. The most comprehensive book on dealing with childhood food allergies, a problem that affects more than four million children in the United States.

As families struggle with a serious condition that can at any moment become life-threatening, the stress is often overwhelming. To write this book, Marianne Barber, whose son has serious food allergies, teamed up with a pediatric allergy specialist and a psychologist who treats many people with severe allergies. The Parent's Guide to Food Allergies addresses in detail the practical, physical, and emotional issues kids and their families face, including vital information on:

--handling emergencies
--stocking a kitchen with safe, appealing foods
--helping a child adjust easily in school

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Book, My allergy bible
This was the first book I bought after learning my son had severe food allergies. This book was and still is a godsend! It is very well written with just enough detail but easy to read/understand.It is a wealth of information, with practical tips, valuable facts, and written with a good sense of humor ... from one Mom to another.Thank you so much for helping me (and our whole family) get a handle on this huge learning curve. It helped me to mentally and emotionally educate and prepare myself, re-organize my pantry and shopping, and learn to live w/ this major adjustment and philosophy in cooking, shopping, reading, and eating.I just wish she would write a follow-up book ... and with more recipes.I need help with the cooking part ... It's so hard to bake without eggs.Thank you!!

3-0 out of 5 stars A good place to start...
This is the first book I read when my son was diagnosed with multiple food allergies. It's a good starting point, but not the best book on the market. The author's child has a severe peanut allergy so the tips given are mainly for a severe peanut allergy. For those of us who have severe allergies and are avoiding the top 8 allergens plus additional foods - the help this book offers is limited.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great information!
This book has been so helpful! It gives lots of great information about food, but also eatting out, the pharmacy, and other places that you might not think about food allergies being a problem!I have refered to this book many times for help!

5-0 out of 5 stars Helpful guide to those with multiple food allergies
I found out my two-year-old son had a severe allergy to peanuts, but also lesser food allergies to milk, soy, eggs and wheat. After pulling my hair out wondering what to feed my son, I started looking for books and cookbooks on the topic. This is both, and it's great. Out of all the books I've bought, I like this one best. It has the most real-life recipes, using practical substitutes. If you or your child have multiple food allergies, get this book. You won't regret it!

3-0 out of 5 stars so so
Good on an emotional level - author helps you understand what it really means to have an allergic child, and gives you the psychological and practical tools to deal with it. Recipes however not that interesting (very few) and author does insist on telling you how it would taste better with 'real butter'! which I found frustrating. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolute Necessity for those with Food allergies
ON THE NATURE OF FOOD ALLERGY BY DR. PAUL J. HANNAWAYis a complete guide to food allergies. This is a book that is an absolute MUST for allergic persons, their loved ones, health professionals, and restauranteers. In this book Dr. Hannaway gives encyclopedic details of food allergies, what causes them, and how to avoid or handle reactions to foods.Until reading this book I was not aware of just how serious food allergies can be, how difficult it is to completely avoid the foods one is known to be allergic to, and how quickly one can die from an allergic reaction. In addition to explaining the vital necessity of an allergic person having not one but two epi pens on his or her person at all times, but also the importance of knowing how to use one correctly, as even the majority of health care professionals do not know that it must be administered in the muscle, not sub-cutaneously.One of the most useful, yet frightening, aspects of this book is the doctor's detailing of hidden uses of culprit foods as additives to various other prepared foods. Did you know someone allergic to peanuts can die from being kissed by someone who ate peanuts or from handling playing cards which a peanut eater previously used?Or that shrimp shells are a component of glucosamine?Vital information for someone allergic to shellfish!By all means get this book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely fascinating, but other books offer more advice...
If you are the parent of a child newly diagnosed with a food allergy, get thee to "How to Manage Your Child's Life-Threatening Food Allergies" by Linda Marienhoff Coss.THAT book will give you all the information you need, in plain, direct language, about how to live with food allergies and how to keep your child safe.

This book is more academic in tone, and reads more like a fascinating encyclopedia. It explains exactly what happens to your body when you have a food allergy, discusses possible causes for an increase in food allergy, and then goes into great detail about the 10 main food allergen categories:Cows Milk and Hens Egg, Wheat, Peanut and Legume, Tree Nut, Seed and Spice, Seafood, and Fruit and Vegetable.

These allergen chapters are particularly interesting, they are descriptive and discuss how the food was introduced into human diets, where the foods grow, how they are served, and the specific problems they might cause. Each chapter also contains useful tables with names and hidden sources of the allergens.

There is also a chapter about less common allergic foods, and one about allergies to food additives.

Chapters 16, 17, and 18 contain the tips that will be of most help to parents, about the challenges of eating in restaurants, tips for managing food allergy, and how to manage allergies at schools and camps. However, these chapters are not nearly as comprehensive as the book I mentioned earlier.

In summary, this book is fascinating and unique and worth reading, but it is not the best book for helping someone live with a food allergy.

Book Description

Allergy is the sixth leading cause of chronic illness in the United States. More than fifty million Americans suffer from allergies, and they spend an estimated $18 billion coping with them. Yet despite advances in biomedicine and enormous investment in research over the past fifty years, the burden of allergic disease continues to grow. Why have we failed to reverse this trend?
Breathing Space offers an intimate portrait of how allergic disease has shaped American culture, landscape, and life. Drawing on environmental, medical, and cultural history and the life stories of people, plants, and insects, Mitman traces how America’s changing environment from the late 1800s to the present day has led to the epidemic growth of allergic disease. We have seen a never-ending stream of solutions to combat allergies, from hay fever resorts, herbicides, and air-conditioned homes to numerous potions and pills. But, as Mitman shows, despite the quest for a magic bullet, none of the attempted solutions has succeeded. Until we address how our changing environment—physical, biological, social, and economic—has helped to create America’s allergic landscape, that hoped-for success will continue to elude us.

5-0 out of 5 stars God Bless You, America: A Gesundheit to Change the Land
"A low-grade headache, right at the line of my eyes. And a scratchy throat." I whine to my mother on the other end of the line. Throughout Gregg Mitman's Breathing Space: How allergies shape our lives and landscapes, I scoffed the physical weakness of hay fever suffering elitists turned scientists or entrepreneurs or druggists. That is, until today when I was reminded of my own allergy to the mitigated air quality of my town, which is not unlike any other town in the United States: it borders a more "wild" area, is gridded with Bermuda and Kentucky grasses, and finds financial support in a sundry of industries. This town has housing projects and climate-controlled offices and immigrants, both herb and hominid, all ordinary places and spaces and people which Mitman unveils as somehow marginalized by a drive to eradicate that which ails us: allergens.

Though he blows plot secrets in the introduction, Mitman's surprises are in his prose and humor, despite the high stakes: that the "increased technological optimism [made] Americans confident in their ability to rid the landscape of allergy" also enabled the population to believe and to consume as if they could create a pristine, non-combative interior landscape, both in their homes and within the bounds of the body (7). These major themes are best played out in the chapters "On the Home Front," a history of the innovations to cleanse our personal and private spaces, "Choking Cities," a stab at the hypocrisy of American indifference to their own inner-city citizens' suffering while sending children from all over the world to high-cost, remote "scratch test centers," both bastions of relief and experiment. Though the theme of environmental justice runs like a nose throughout the book, beginning with a hilarious anecdote on a chain-wielding Mr. T, he takes a stronger critical look at the governmental institutions that enabled the architecture and bureaucracy of interior allergy than other texts in the field.

Mitman's ability to synthesize not only the complex political, economic, and social climates but the history of medicine and technology make this text useful for pre-med and post-medicated people alike. An undergraduate course might find specific chapters useful for grounding what is now the post-modern perspective: there is no outside. As an ecology student, I longed for more extensive histories on plants, production, and a kind of Pollanesque perspective, as well as denser chemical discussion in lieu of drawn out stories of obscure poets sniffling. Also, the rhetorical links of ragweed, also called "river-rat" and "slum dweller," to less-desirable human populations, as Peter Coates has made opaque, seemed under utilized (55). Still, Mitman's collection of images, affection for irony and overwhelming knowledge of medicine legitimate this book as a supporter of what is most important: "the evolving relationship of body and place" (250).

So change your AC filters, pop a non-drowsy Claritin (though you won't need the pseudoephedrine) and settle into your microbial, pollen, lice, mite, cockroach, dander, mystery-free world for a read that will have you wondering if it is even possible.

My 5 year old son LOVED this book.It brought tears to my eyes to see him sit down with this book after I read it to him and for him to flip through each page very slowly asking me questions and telling me what was going on on the pages. He has never reacted this way towards a book before so I know he was connecting with "Chad".I feel this book has given him a better understanding of his food allergy and I am very happy about this purchase. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Good- But....
This book is very informative, but a lot of the book deals with how the sinuses work, and how they are subject to irritation. While this is not bad information, it is dealt with too often. I basically wanted this book for relief of my problems, and in that respect, it is quite thorough. However, just skim through the first few chapters to get ideas about correcting your sinus problems.

5-0 out of 5 stars Followup Q&A with Josephson
This book is approachable by a layperson and which covers most of what a sinus sufferer should know before seeking treatment. It provides a good overview of the anatomy, a brief description of surgical evaluation and intervention, and detailed descriptions of medications and recommended lifestyle adjustments

I'm a patient of Dr. Josephson and he strongly encourages patients to read this book so I read it.Before reading my review, I recommend you first read the best review I could find, written by Walt Ballenberger who is founder of PostNasalDrip, "a resource web site for sinusitis sufferers like himself".You can find the review at the following links: [..]Ballenberger's review identified a number of questions which were unanswered in his book.By talking with Josephson in person, I was able to get answers for some of them.

LASER
The book doesn't explain the tradeoffs of laser vs. traditional cutting instruments. Before Josephson, I saw an ENT who recommended laser to lightly cauterize the turbinates in order to reduce their tendency to swell when inflamed (the scarification reduces the membrane's elasticity).DrJosephson is not a proponent of laser except in certain cases.Although a laser is self-cauterizing and therefore reduces bleeding, it causes heat damage to surrounding tissue (more than the damage caused by a cutting instrument) and instrument setup adds time/cost to the procedure.Only where the decrease in bleeding outweighs these costs is use of a laser justified (e.g. when the patient has many small polyps).I didn't ask him but I'd imagine that the thermal heat injury would likely cause more damage to mucus-producing goblet cells and mucus-transporting cilia cells than cutting tools.

SINUPLASTY
This book doesn't explain the tradeoffs of sinuplasty® vs. traditional cutting instruments.Sinuplasty® is a proprietary tool made by Acclarent which uses a thin balloon similar to an angioplasty balloon to open the sinus passages. As in heart vessels, the balloon is placed into position and inflated, then deflated and removed. According to Acclarent's description, this results in permanent widening of the critical areas leading into the sinuses while leaving the nose lining unharmed rather than destructing this lining as occurs in typical sinus surgery.I would have to imagine that if the pressure applied expands bone than it certainly will crush the membranes and must do some damage to them and the cilia which are so necessary to remove the infection and mucus (mucociliary clearance) which is the whole basis by which the sinuses protect you. When I askedDr. Josephson about what the pressure does to the membranes he said that he knew of no studies that showed what the effect of the balloons on the membranes and cilia were.It turns out that Dr. Josephson is trained in sinuplasty but relies almost exclusively on FESS (endoscopic cutting instruments, as described in his book). He pointed out that unlike angioplasty, which operates on only soft tissue and requires a stent to hold open the expanded tissue, sinuplasty expands a passageway or sinus by dilating bony openings and pathways--widening one passageway by crushing an adjacent sinus cavity. He speculates that such pressure fractured cells could result in a problem later such as mucocele formation--the procedure was too recently developed and long term studies were not available. In addition, while sinuplasty can open up a closed frontal, maxillary, or sphenoid sinus, it cannot open up the labyrinth of the ethmoid sinus. If the ethmoids are closed, functional FESS may be required in conjunction.

FUNCTIONAL ENDOSCOPIC SINUS SURGERY (FESS)
Josephson doesn't much describe his surgical techniques in this book, which makes it difficult to compare FESS with alternative approaches.Dr Josephson says Functional Endoscopic Sinus Surgery (FESS) uses microcutting instruments to remove bony partitions and to widen openings into the frontal, maxillary and sphenoid sinus when necessary. I asked how he expands the passages to closed sinus cavities. He explained that, in my case, he would remove the wall between the passage to a frontal sinus and an adjacent ethmoid sinus cell (rather than crushing the ethmoid cell as in sinuplasty). This would be more controlled than expanding a balloon (as in sinuplasty) and avoid creating a new closed cell which could become a cyst. While FESS changes the connectivity of the cavities, it avoids potentially closing off the adjacent cells. He claims that research shows that mucus transport from the now-opened frontal sinus to the ostiomeatal complex is preserved with this method. This book should include and expand on these descriptions.I also asked in what cases the membranes grow back which seems important when polyps are removed from sinus cells, leaving bare bone walls. He replied that they quickly grow back. This book should include pointers to research validating this claim.

SINUS ANATOMY
This book describes the sinuses as cavities which clean and humidify inhaled air. However, the diagrams show the sinuses as dead-end spaces off the primary airway connected only by tiny passages. Why does air travel through them except a small amt via turbulence?Although I suspect they do indeed clean and humidify inhaled air, it would be helpful to me if the book resolved this seeming contradiction.

CAT SCANS
The book includes a series of diagrams showing an idealized representation of the sinuses and other organs.I found it very difficult to relate my CT scans to these idealized diagrams even though I'm quite good at 3D visualization. It would be helpful if this book included a link to an online series of example CAT scans with annotation explaining what's what, how the structures relate to disease symptoms, and (assuming some patents get post-operative CT scans) what the structures look like after surgery.Josephson told me that he had a CT review in a draft of the book and Penguin Publishers needed to make the book shorter and insisted that he cut it out. Eventually he plans to put it on line.

Overall, an excellent book and highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars finnally a book that works
Sinus Relief mow is the most comprehensive book i have read on the subject. It is the first book that links Sinus Problems,Allergies,ASTHMA,SLeep Apnea, and Gerd (gastroesophageal reflux) i suffer from most of these problems and have been treated for years by many different physicians. And no one has made these connections which Dr Jordan S Josephson makes. He is brilliant and i am living what he describes. I am using his book asc a feference and have been following his five step program. I am already seeing a difference. I like the fact that DR Josephson combines the best from traditional and alternative medicine to bring relief for these problems If you suffer from any of these problems this book would be the best investment that you can make. It has many tips that woll help you with your problems. I am going to actually make an appointment to see DR Josephson. I like the wat he thinks. It makes sense.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful advice
In the interests of full disclosure, I should reveal that I am a patient of Dr. Josephson's. In fact, he recently performed a FESS procedure on my sinuses.
It needs to be noted that Dr. Josephson practices what he preaches. Before we arrived at the decision to perform the surgery, I followed each of his recommendations, including a long use of antibiotics, smoking cessation, the use of an air purifier and a humidifier, etc., etc. Only after these actions failed to result in a "cure" for my sinus problems did he recommend surgery. True to his word in the book, post-surgery did not require packing and I hope that the procedure will result in long-term improvement. In the meantime, I constantly refer to Dr. Josephson's clear and coherent book to guide my treatment.

5-0 out of 5 stars Finally a formula that works
This book is a God-send for sinus suffers. The regime it recommends works as advertised. I can attest to this--I have suffered from sinus problems all my life. The 5 step solution recommended by Dr. Josephson REALLY works. Sinus irrigation for example has made a huge difference in the quality of my life. The power of this book is that is does not over-simplify. Sinus problems originate from a range of complex problems and these need to be understood. What this book does well is break down the solution into pieces the average person can understand and implement.

3-0 out of 5 stars Cute book
This is a cute book, and I think it gets the point across to a small child, but I did have higher hopes for it, so I was a little disappointed.I will keep looking for a book that better explains the allergy to my child, and how he can be proactive in dealing with it.I think this book is maybe better for a very young child who is first learning about his allergy. My child is 2 but I feel like he needs more than this book offers.Still, I think he'll like it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book to start the allergy conversation w/your toddler
We have used this book to start talking about peanut allergies w/our 2 and a 1/2 year old. She enjoys the story and we enjoy that it brings up many different aspects of allergies (how the person w/the allergy feels, how others may feel, what foods may have peanuts "hidden" in them, etc.). Great book!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Unbelievable!It works
As a mother to a child with severe allergies, I tried NAET out of sheer desperation.A friend had experienced incredible success in treating (indeed CURING!) her autistic son with NAET.Slightly skeptical, I tried NAET for "clearing" my daughter's allergies. She started to improve almost overnight. It was incredible. She is now enjoying a totally unrestricted diet and is healthy and thriving. This treatment has been a blessing to our entire family. And it all started with this book.
I've already given my copy away and I'm buying another one for a friend.

1-0 out of 5 stars It didn't work
We spent a lot of time and money on Naet and it simply didn't work.
An accurate blood test showed that none of the allergies that were supposedly cleared are still there. My son still reacts.
Don't waste your money

5-0 out of 5 stars This Book is a Life saver!
My children suffered from many food allergies. Our lives were on a standstill before we found out about NAET. Now after treating all known food and environmental allergies, we have our lives back. we go out to restaurants regularly. I don't have to read the fine labels on the products anymore when I shop in the super market. We can go camping, to the mountains, to the ocean without any trace of our past problems.Thank you Dr. Devi for writing and publishing this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Helped in eliminating my son's food allergies
Although the book won't teach you how to get rid of food allergies it's a great resource for anyone who is or is thinking about getting rid of their child's allergies through NAET.The book is full of case studies that helped me see the not so obvious ways that my son's allergies where manifesting themselves. My son was allergic to soy, garlic, tomatoes, celery, bananas plus a whole lot of other things. The thought of eating in a restaurant was just a dream for our family. After being treated using Dr. Devi's technique we are cured and go out to restaurants all the time without any allergic reactions.Buy this book... ... 5-0 out of 5 stars I've been referring to this book for 10 years
I bought this book about 10 years ago when the hospital wouldn't take my blood donation for my grandfather. They said I was too low in iron.I had been EXTREMELY tired drinking mounds of coffee to stay alert at work. This book solved my problem. My wife also has severe exercised induced anaphylactic shock - 4 doctors and allergists couldn't help and she was told to never exercise again. This book solved that problem and she still runs marathons.Between the index and the vitamin and mineral charts, I refer to this book every time I have a health question. My book is now torn in two with underlined and worn pages.I'll never give it up.A MUST HAVE for anyone interested in health and nutrition, and virtually any health problem.

5-0 out of 5 stars Correct the vague symptoms that your doctor hasn't helped
With the huge number of additives, preservatives, herbicides, pesticides and other cides present in our foods, it's no wonder we are getting fatter and sicker and not losing weight on yo yo diets. Dr. B's book helped me lose weight and quit asthma medicines and my doctor couldn't/did't help. Ifyou have vague symptoms that don't get better, you might consider foodintolerances & read this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must-have home reference for any family or individual!
I found Dr. Braly's Food Allergy & Nutrition Revolution to be both insightful and a benefit to our household. As parents of four (#5 is due in 3 weeks), my wife and I regularly refer to Dr. Braly's book for itsin-depth information, research, treatment and protocols for a multitude ofhealth conditions.A few years after reading Dr. Braly's book, I finallymet him at a health conference and was fascinated by the wealth ofinformation and experience he has.Recently Dr. Braly informed me he hastwo new health guides coming out through Keats Publishing and I willdefinitely be purchasing both of them. Please feel free to contact meregarding my opinion on Dr. Braly, his book or even on how to contact him.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is life changing information for the chronically ill.
As a medical student, I must read many books on disease states and the therapies for them. The initial event that creates an environment for many disease states is commonly a breakdown of the body's natural ability tomaintain health (i.e. immune system deficiencies).Dr. Braly's book offersexcellent information that explains how your body should work, why itdoesn't, and what you can do to make it work properly just by modifyingyour diet.I have worked with a physician who has been in practice forthirty years that became interested in Dr. Braly's book after his wife'smedical problems had failed to resolve by traditional and expensivemedicals treatments. After diet modification, there was drasticimprovement in her health and soonafter, her quality of life.Thisprompted the physician to treat his own patients with Dr. Braly's dietmodification plan.Today, the vast majority of his patients are thosebeing successfully treated for food allergies and have spent thousands ontraditional medical therapies with previous doctors that have had less thanbeneficial results.I must highly recommend this book to anyone sufferingfrom fibromyalgia, JRA, chronic headaches, intestinal problems, or otherillnesses that have not responded to traditional medicine.

5-0 out of 5 stars If you can only buy one book on the subject, this is the one

I purchased this book for my 3 year old son who was recently diagnosed with a milk allergy. He absolutley loves this book and in fact sleeps with it most nights. This book is basic and informative and helps a child understand what a milk allergy is.I hear comments from my son, "does this have cow's milk in it"and when I say yes he goes OK- Cody can not have cow's milk either. This book has been a great help in teaching my children about milk allergies.I would highly recommend this book to anyone who needs to explain a milk allergy to a child.

1-0 out of 5 stars As the author indicates, this book is written based on fear. This book did more harm than good.
As a mother of a son newly diagnosed with a peanut allergy, this book did more harm than good.It is written, as the writer admits, out of fear.Yes, this is a dangerous allergy and great caution needs to be taken, but fear is not the answer.Parents and children need faith, support, and strength when confronting this challenge. There is no information in this book that is not found on the Web or in related books authored by medical professionals.

2-0 out of 5 stars Too general
I have an infant that was just diagnosed with peanut allergies. This book was highly recommended - but I have to wonder if it was only by people with no common sense. There is nothing in this book that common sense doesn't tell you. And where the author has the opportunity to supply details or action information that can be used, she fails to go that extra step. The author repeatedly says to supply a list of "alternatives" to peanut snacks to other parents, but doesn't share what those alternatives are! She says peanuts are hidden in all sorts of items like common body creams and shampoo but doesn't list any brands! Thanks, Sheila for your taunting tone of, "I did the research and want to wave it under your nose, but you can't have it!" This book was a waste of money and a waste of the 20 minutes it took me to read it. Not worth the time and effort I put into tracking it down. I need real information I can use to save my child's life, this book didn't help.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great resource
Great handbook for parents, anyone that cares for your child. I gave copies to people that my son spends time with, or is in their home. My friends were amazed how much they learned and it started lots of conversations about topic

5-0 out of 5 stars Easy to read and share!
I have a nut allergic toddler and have read all of the information I could find. This book is the easiest to read.It skips alot of the whys and background info.It is great for a babysitter and for relatives who will be providing food for your child.I bought four copies and had all of our relatives read it and any prospective babysitters (and any future teachers). It helps them to keep your child safe and in the case of an emergency, tells how to recognize reactions and what to do.A must have!

2-0 out of 5 stars No new information
If you have a child with a peanut allergy and you have already done your research, then this book does not contain any new information. If you are just starting to research information on peanut allergy then this book may be useful in some areas. It is not a big book and is not very long. The book does, however, give you the option to personalize it to your child (you write your child's name in the blanks)and gives detailed instructions to leave caregivers on how to use the Epipen and a place to put emergency contact information...but it is not worth the money. If you can get it used or for half the price...then it is worth it...Otherwise, type "peanut allergy" into Google and get the same info for free. ... After being plagued with skin problems, headaches, tiredness, hay fever, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), depression, etc., etc., etc. for much of my late teens and all of my adult life, and going to over fifteen regular allergists and M.D.s for much of my forty-five years, I read Randolph's book: An Alternative Approach To Allergies.

Realizing that Dr. Randolph had discovered a major piece to the health-puzzle, I finally went to a M.D. in New York who changed the entire basis of his practice from being a "classically trained" allergist to a transformed Clinical Ecologists M.D. After being diagnosed with MCS (multiple chemical sensitivity) and delayed food allergies--for which I was tested--I removed all the offending chemicals from my home and work environment; I also eliminated the foods causing delayed allergic reactions: The improvement in my health was rapid and live-changing.

Thinking such may be psychosomatic, I went back to eating my delayed allergic foods and returned to using normal household chemical products, e.g., Tide, bleach, Comet, fabric softener, Cling, perfumed soaps, etc., and, within a few days, all my chronic health symptoms returned with a vengeance. I once again eliminated such foods and chemicals from my diet/environment, and with five days I was much better.

Today, five months after visiting the NY Clinical Ecologist, I have all the energy of a 20 year old; am sleeping far less and feel more rested; exercise five days a week (I had little to no energy to do this in the past); my headaches are gone; my IBS has improved to a point where I do not even notice it; I am not experiencing hay fever any longer (I can now own a cat which before I could not even enter a room where a cat resided because within minutes I was itching and becoming tired); and my depression is a thing of the past. And since my life-changing experience, I have introduced many others to this new way of treating food and chemical allergies: All have had similar improvements in health as I experience--without exception.

I thank the late Dr. Randolph for writing this wonderful book and for establishing the branch of Medicine Clinical Ecology and educating doctors regarding MCS and delayed food allergies...and thank you Dr. W. of NY for your diagnosis, treatment and compassion.

I can say from experience--and vastly improved health--the information in Dr. Randolph's book clearly takes the medical field in the area of food and chemical allergies from the Dark Ages into the 21st Century. I only hope more classically trained allergy doctors will read Dr. Randolph's book and make a transition from Dark Age medicine to 21st Century medicine.

5-0 out of 5 stars Theron Randolph rocks...!
This book saved my life....

I have MCS from hell and I would never have beaten it without discovering Randolph's sane and elegant approach.

The case studies enabled me to understand what was happening with my hyper-reactions to chemicals and foods....

...AND to see how my mental and physical dysfunctions were related to my environmental exposures....

...I am 'almost' well now thanks to Dr Randolph

4-0 out of 5 stars Essential information for everyone
Dr. Theron Randolph was the foremost pioneer in his day of allergy theory, diagnosis, and treatment.Over the years, much has changed in the world of allergy treatment.Dr. Randolph's theories are still pretty solid, and give the layperson or medical professional a sound foundation for understanding allergy and chemical sensitivity.Everyone should be aware of the facts presented in this book, because everyone in the world is affected by the pollution in our world.

That said, the diagnosis methods Dr. Randolph used, though a vast improvement over what else was available at the time, are nowadays unnecessary. There are very gentle and quick methods for diagnosing allergies, but they are outside the scope of mainstream medicine.

The treatment methods are challenging, to say the least.Avoiding what you are allergic to seems like a no-brainer these days. However, it is far easier said than done, in fact, it borders on the impossible.Strict diets like the rotation diet mentioned in this book are very difficult to maintain, as well as socially isolating and psychologically exhausting.

There are ways for completely transforming allergies without injections or dilutions administered as drops under the tongue.Mainstream medicine, however, will never help you find these methods!Whether or not you are interested in subjecting yourself or your loved ones to the diagnosis and treatment delineated in this book, the understanding of allergies you can find here is invaluable.Highly recommended reading, though the treatment and diagnosis methods are not neccesarily recommended.
