2-0 out of 5 stars An OK book
The book is ok but what you really want to know is how to PREVENT the allergies in the first place! The author doesn't have a clue.

Food allergies have become a major problem especially among children. Unless you work with children, you may not be aware of the extent of the problem. In the last 5 years there has been an "epidemic" of food allergies among children. It started at the same time the recommended number of vaccinations was substantially increased. It could be a coincidence or not. Vaccines are not regulated the same as food. Manufacturers can have "secret ingredients" not revealed on the package insert. This is protected by trade law. If you enjoy reading patents, you can find out many of the various ingredients used in the culture media and adjuvants. Many, many foods are listed. Peanut oil, sesame oil, wheat germ oil, soy oil, corn oil, walnut oil, almond oil are among the ingredients listed. A small amount of protein from these foods cannot be eliminated from the vaccine. It could be causing the food allergy epidemic. At the very least, physicians cannot advise their allergic patients very wisely if they don't know what is in the vaccine.

1-0 out of 5 stars Confusing science mixed with some practical advice
This really is no book for idiots. Some key sections are not well organized and the science is badly presented throughout. For example, to explain how food allergies work the author leaps straight into an unnecessary and confusing timeline of allergy related discoveries and researchers and then moves on to an overly detailed discussion of the body's immune system. Within three paragraphs the reader is presented with irrelevant information such as where B and T lymphocytes are created in the body. Terms are introduced before being defined, background information is taken for granted, and no where is there a basic description what substances are likely to be allergens and why. The similar section in "Food Allergies and Food Intolerance" by Brostoff and Gamlin is much clearer and more complete.

The lax editing leads to some real whoppers. My favorite is "zinc is an essential trace element that must be obtained from the diet, since the body can't make enough." This is true since the body cannot produce any metals at all. Or take the sidebar on page 79, which states that "anything that goes on or into your body through any orifice can cause an allergic reaction" which would imply that a person can develop allergies to oxygen, carbon, and a host of substances your immune cells cannot possibly bind to. Brostoff and Gamlin's book provides a much more accurate and complete description of allergens and how the body responds to them.

The alternative therapies section weakens the credibility of the book as a whole. After repeatedly citing well designed research studies to discredit quack therapies in chapter 15 the author turns around and cites "anecdotal evidence" to recommend alternative therapies in chapters 16 through 18. He goes so far as to repeat the claim that homeopathic solutions "continue to hold a trace memory or essence of the original substance" after being highly diluted without even hinting that this effect can't be explained by any known laws of chemistry or physics. This section of the book is useless for determining which alternative therapies may be helpful and which are wastes of time and money.

The central section of the book contains practical advice for dealing with food allergies and all of this information is useful. But I'm sure any good book on food allergy would include similar information along with a clearer background section and more rigor in discussing alternative therapies. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Needs some revisions!
I was recently diagnosed with several food allergies/sensitivities.I was excited to get this book.Unfortunately, A for effort, but F for product results. The recipes lack flavor and in some cases taste vile. The author never attempted sweeteners for the baking items such as agave nectar or even honey. Not so tasty!

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect for my daughter's allergies
My daughter is allergic to many foods including dairy, soy, wheat, gluten, tomatoes, all nuts, seafood, sugar, and many others. This book is perfect for her needs!I have only tried two recipes but I made a quinoa pizza dough with a pesto sauce and goat cheese and she loved it!I do have to be careful and make some substitutions here and there but I appreciate all the choices the book has to offer. For example, I had to leave the garlic out of the pesto and substitute sunflower seeds for pine nuts.I still appreciate the base recipes that this book offers and am excited to get my own copy.I am borrowing the one I have now but after one complete dinner I am sold! This is the best allergy book I have found so far.Thank you to the author!

5-0 out of 5 stars THE BEST ALLERGY COOKBOOK EVER!!!
I have 19 food allergies and can make food that TASTES GOOD.Yes, you do need to get some "special" items from the store but the pumpkin pie recipe is heavenly. We have several food allergy sufferers in our family and this makes life simpler and tastier for all.

2-0 out of 5 stars not what I expected
My son is allergic to soy and milk so I thought I'd give this a try for a birthday cake for him. The recipes are so strange that I will never use it. Almost everything in it has strange ingredients. I just wanted normal everyday recipes...

3-0 out of 5 stars informative, but quickly outdated
As a general practice pediatrician, it pretty much tells you a lot of what I have often shared with my patients already. The book is informative, reviewing a lot of detail you would not otherwise get from your physician in even a few appointments.
While a catchy title, the book sounds like it will offer some sort of countercultural message. The book does not do this, for those who are looking for that sort of information.
Most importantly, the information we have learned over the last 7 years or so has changed and some of the information in the book has quickly become outdated (e.g., a more nuanced view of maternal allergen avoidance, or highly allergenic food introduction in infants). Let's hope a newer edition of the book is in the works, perhaps with a more straightforward title.

4-0 out of 5 stars One of the better books on this subject
This is one of the better books on this topic. They prefer that you see an allergy specialist rather than a GP."The incidence of food allergy is much higher for children than for adjutls - 8 percent of those under three, and rising." The author claims that adults have outgrown food allergies which lowers it to 2% for the general population. The best part of the book was where he told parents if other people don't consider you "neurotic" then you are not being vigilant enough protecting your allergic child. The only "fault" the book may have is there is nothing offered as a reasonable cause for the epidemic of food allergies. Science can now look at live blood, we have so much research that has been done, but no one really knows what causes food allergies? Why is it that undeveloped countries have almost no food allergies?

2-0 out of 5 stars Water Downed Doctor version
I agree with the other reviewers this is things I already know and have heard over and over.I was looking for something with more of a natural approach and this is not that.So if that's what you have in mind(natural approach) do not buy this book.

2-0 out of 5 stars This is EXACTLY what your doctor tells you
I found this book to be a regurgitation of what I had already been told by two pediatricians regarding my 4 year olds recently diagnosed asthma. Nothing new here at all. I was surprised that the doctors do not seem to acknowledge the large role diet plays in a condition such as asthma. I am not a doctor, however, even I can see the significant link between diet and health. Since my son's asthma diagnosis a month ago, I have dramatically restructured his diet and began supplementing him with magnesium. Guess what?! My son has shown significant improvement over the past 3 weeks! Even his allergies seem to have improved. I am proud to report my son hasn't taken a single asthma or allergy medication in two weeks. If you are resigned to a life of medication and supporting the multi-million dollar pharmaceutical company's, then this is the book for you.

4-0 out of 5 stars Hoping for more information I could use at home to help...
This book is a good book to help define and aid in the understanding in causes of Asthma and different allergies, but I was hoping for more information that I could use at home to help reduce chances for asthma attacks and my son's allergy induced asthma.

5-0 out of 5 stars Extremely useful
My son has complicated, chronic health issues which greatly restrict what he can and can not eat. This cookbook, which we bought after maxing out our renewals of our local library's copy, has given us several recipes that we have adapted to his diet. And the whole family enjoys the result!

This was a huge help to us.We'd love to make some contributions if another edition were to ever come out!

5-0 out of 5 stars Helpful
Got this because my husband and daughter both have milk allergy and wheat allergy. This is great to search by food you want to eliminate and easy to follow.

4-0 out of 5 stars By far the best
I have read many allergy cookbooks in the past. This is the easiest and best one I have found. It uses ingredients I have actually heard of.I gave my copy to a friend and found I couldn't live without it, so I bought another one!

4-0 out of 5 stars handy reference
This was one of the first allergy cookbooks that we bought when we found we were faced with mutliple severe food allergies.

Long on baked goods - short on meals, but still a handy reference, and uses easily accessible ingredients. No pink elephants on the ingredient list. All sorts of cookies, cakes, muffins, bars, desserts, pancakes etc.

Easy to read and easy to make recipes.

We have tried many recipes from this one. My daughter's favorite dessert is the swirl cake that we make based on the recipe of this book. That is enough of a positive review for me.

1-0 out of 5 stars Lacks variety
I was looking for a real cookbook with a VARIETY of ideas including NEW meal ideas. The back of the book states "A full range of menu ideas . . ."Not true.Of the 300 recipes in the book, about 250 are for cookies, cakes, pies, sweet breads, muffins and other dessert type items. There are only 50 recipes in the "Main Meals" chapter and it looks like they were stretching to fill the chapter.About 10 of the recipes in "Main Meals" are made of potatoes such as "Potato Fans": slice a potato, sprinkle with salt and bake. Wow. I can barely contain myself.Four of the recipes were for more breads like corn bread and then the all-to-creative Chicken & Rice and Pizza --which is what I'm trying to get away from. I wanted was some NEW creative ideas for meals or side dishes. I will keep looking for a better book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This is the one!
If you have a child with several food allergies (like me) and are looking for a good cookbook, this is it!
There are a lot of photos with step-by-step instructions and everything is explained very well in the first of the book. All the recipes are so easy and taste so good.I'm very happy with it.Everything I have made has been really good.I highly recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars User friendly andversatile (good recipes, food allergies or not)
One of the biggest challenges to cooking allergen-free is learning the substitutions for everyday foods that the average cook takes for granted and how to use them properly. This book is a wonderful educational tool and a must have for those just beginning this journey. However, this book isn't just a bunch of obscure ingredients thrown together. Many of the recipes are common ingredients in well thought out, home style dishes for the family. The recipes are easy to follow and there are tons of pictures.I bought this book because my nephew has severe food allergies, and I wanted to be knowledgeable and able to cook for him.Even so, I find myself cooking many of the recipes at home for me and my husband because they are just plain good. This is an A+ book for me.

5-0 out of 5 stars Love this cook book!
This has got to be the best allergy free cook books I have found. The recipes are full of flavor, quick and easy. My Child can now have cake, cookies, and more thanks to this book. The whole family loves all of the recipes and I am thankful that my child can now enjoy safe yummy food. Thank you Sharissa!! ... Read more

Product Description

Allergic diseases affect nearly one-fourth of the population and cause or contribute to significant chronic illness. Allergic diseases are common and are seen by a wide variety of health care providers. In Clinical Allergy: Diagnosis and Management, the author provides a practical clinical overview for the common disorders encountered in the specialty of Allergy. Designed to be easily readable and to provide clinically applicable information for both the nonallergist and allergist, the intent is to unravel the mystery of allergy. The introductory chapters focus on the human immune response, environmental allergens, and the different types of allergy testing. The subsequent chapters focus on the common allergic conditions seen in the office or clinic, including rhinitis and rhinosinusitis, allergic eye disease, asthma, urticaria and angioedema, atopic and contact dermatitis, drug allergy, food allergy, anaphylaxis, and stinging insect allergy. "Cross-talk" between chapters helps show the interrelationships among the various allergic disorders. The chapters begin with a review of pathophysiologic mechanisms and then consider a clinically structured approach to diagnosis and management of the disorders. In addition to pharmacologic treatment, the importance of nonpharmacologic management and patient education is emphasized. At the end of each chapter, clinical vignettes highlight the daily management of the allergic patient. Clinical Allergy: Diagnosis and Management, provides a logical framework for the evaluation and management of allergic disorders in patients.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Things Come In Small Packages
This 160-page, 5 x 7 little book may be small in size by today's standards for self-help/healing books on allergies, fatigue, hypogylcemia, depression, hypothyroid, heart disease, alcoholism, and diabetes, but GOODBYE ALLERGIES is the best that I've read in years. Author Tom R. Blaine - a judge, not a doctor - speaks from experience without weighing down the manuscript with too much technical jargon. His message is clear, to the point, and as timely as the first year of publication.I found myself wondering why it has taken so many years for these concepts to finally hit the mainstream.

5-0 out of 5 stars Welcome Relief
Judge Tom Blaine explains in an easy-to-understand manner why his recommended diet is effective at combatting allergic reactions. The book has been criticized on the basis that he is not a doctor. However, he has done his research and is mindful of both accuracy and clarity. Most importantly, the proof is in the results. My mother was at wit's end after visiting a plethora of doctors concerning a rash over most of her body. She saw this book on a discount pile and figured that it wouldn't hurt to try.In just two weeks, her rash was gone for the first time in years. My allergies are more respiratory. The program worked for me as well.Whenever I start having problems, I go on the program and my allergies clear up.I've recommended this book to many people and I encourage you to give it a try if you suffer from allergies at all. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars super interesting book!
Great book for anyone who has allergies, digestive problems, asthma or other potential food-sensitivity reactions.

2-0 out of 5 stars slightly lacking
This book was an ok basic overview of food intolerance. It had extensive lists of foods to avoid, symptom lists etc. What it did not have was any scientific evidence to back up various claims. In the intro the author claims a connection between food intolerance and mental illness and claims that it is well known that many people with "celiac disease also suffer from bipolar disorder (schizophrenia)."I have no idea if this is true because there is no citation or reference as to where this info came from. Also, anyone who took psych 101 in college knows that bipolar and schizophrenia are too very different disorders, and while a healthful diet is always best, these illness are not caused by food intolerance but by abnormal brain function that cannot be fixed by a special diet.

While much of the info in this book makes sense (i.e.- don't eat food that makes you feel bad) it does not back up its claims with any sort of research. It also doesn't go into a whole lot of detail about elimination diets, which I thought was odd.Instead it recommends certain tests from specific labs throughout the country, claiming that not all labs could do these tests properly, which doesn't make sense and is a little suspect.I started to wonder if the authors had financial ties to any of the services/ products they recommended.

4-0 out of 5 stars Awesome book!
I wish I had this book when I was diagnosed with food intolerances in 2007. It's the most complete information I've found so far! If you have food intolerances and have been struggling to figure out what steps to take in your recovery get this book. Just one negative - the recipes aren't very inspiring.

5-0 out of 5 stars Food Intolerance Bible
The Food Intolerance Bible is an invaluable resource. Like many people, I was a little confused about the difference between food allergies and food intolerances. Many of the books I've read on these subjects use the words interchangeably. I know for a fact that I have some food allergies. As a child, I was thoroughly tested. Sure enough, if I ate enough a small quantity of those foods, my tongue immediately started to swell up and I started to gasp for breath. These early incidents were scary so I learned very quickly to stay well away from these foods.

Food intolerances are slightly different. The effects aren't always immediate or dramatic. Though careful watching of my body's reaction to certain foods, I was pretty sure that there were some foods in my regular diet (namely white flour, refined sugar, and chocolate) that were causing or exasperating problems such as abdominal pain, cramping, and depression. Unfortunately, these symptoms aren't always immediately noticeable so I tend to associate these foods with a feeling of comfort and increased energy.

The Food Intolerance Bible helped me gain an understanding of my body's reactions to certain foods. It also gave me an idea about what other conditions, illnesses, or body reactions could also be causing or adding to my problems. Now, I have a place to start.

5-0 out of 5 stars Highly recommended for both community library cookbook and health collections.
Nearly everyone has some form of food intolerance, claims "The Food Intolerance Bible: A Nutritionist's Plan to Beat Food Cravings, Fatigue, Mood Swings, Celiac Disease, Headaches, IBS, and Deal with Food Allergies". Food Intolerance occurs when ones body rejects what you put in - and the rejection comes in a huge amount of miserable ailments to make people feel terrible for that day. With seven steps to minimize the occurrence of food intolerance, and over 70 recipes such as Plum Crumble and Black Peppercorns with Sweet Potato fries, Salmon Lasagna, and so much more on top of that, "The Food Intolerance Bible: A Nutritionist's Plan to Beat Food Cravings, Fatigue, Mood Swings, Celiac Disease, Headaches, IBS, and Deal with Food Allergies" is highly recommended for both community library cookbook and health collections.

5-0 out of 5 stars God didn't make you allergic to anything
Colbert again shows us how to live a healthier lifestyle and take care of our temple. He goes further into emotional reasons why our immune systems get hammered in ""Deadly Emotions".See also "A More Excellent Way" by Henry Wright, a ministry where many people with allergies learn how to get healed.Much better than NAET!

5-0 out of 5 stars outstanding
This helpful book is full of God's wisdom!God has used Dr. Colbert as a vessel to convey truth to me and my family regarding walking in Divine health! This book does not delve into "new age" teachings, as others have accused.Obviously, they have no spiritual discernment. This is VERY sound, VERY Biblical advice!

3-0 out of 5 stars helpful book!
I liked this book by Dr. Colbert and just ordered one from amazon.com for my father who is suffering from allergies to dust mites and chemicals in food.I think the first review that had one star had a most hateful attitude.Dr. Colbert really loves the Lord and it shows in his books. He desires for people to be healthy and whole and so does the Lord.He is our Father and wants his children to be well. What father doesn't?Conventional allergy treatments such as desensitization shots are helpful but sometimes people need more.My daughter had 5 years of allergy shots and still suffers from allergies. We shy away from drugs because drugs cause side effects and they cause you to lose nutrients as they are detoxified by the body. currently our daughter is on a homeopathic treatment prescribed by her naturopathic doctor and it is helping.Dr. Colbert is not I repeat not into New Age type of thinking and remedies. This person the first review insulted Dr. Colbert's integrity and my opinion of this person is that they are mean spirited and judgemental!

1-0 out of 5 stars Pseudoscientific claptrap
The Bible Cure for Allergies is nothing but pseudoscientific claptrap designed to convince the gullible that ancient peoples were somehow healthier than we are. (Most ancients lived short, pain-filled lives, but you won't read that here.) Far from being Biblical, this book would insult many conservative Christians with its constant references to New Age healing powers and the like.

Reputable allergy treatments do not contravene the teachings of the Bible. There is therefore no reason for anyone, no matter how devout or religious, to resort to the unproven, ineffective, expensive remedies this book recommends. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Book!
My four year old son loves this book. He thinks the main character, "A.J." is "cool". What I like about the book is that his allergy is never specified so the book can be relevant to your child no matter what the food allergy. The story is fun yet serious without being scary. Perfect for kids with any food allergy or food intolerance as well as to educate friends and family. A cute story with a great message!

5-0 out of 5 stars A must have teaching tool

What a great book! Finally, a children's book about food allergies that is positive, entertaining, and educational...all rolled into one!I have looked and looked for a book about food allergies that would help my nephew learn self-management skills and this is definitely it.So many of the kids allergy books focus on what they can't do, can't eat, etc. - I love the way this one focuses on how to handle a situation in an allergy friendly, kid friendly way.And my nephew loves the rhyme that AJ uses throughout the book - it's a fun way to learn a really important skill. Can't recommend this one highly enough - you won't be disappointed! ... 3-0 out of 5 stars What Is Your Poison?
After many years of research, the authors try to prove that our environment is cleaner now than it was twenty years ago. That's welcome new to Al Gore and to all of us who have sentitive noses (and throats -- what pesticides attack first in my body) and allergies. This town I call home is one of the most pollutted places you could find. A few times, when Spring gets here and my allergies have reached their peak (and I'm sure I'm at death's door), I declare that I am alleergic to this town I use to love.

Pesticides are my major enemy, not the lawn chemicals, but the strong indoor kinds which were forced on me despite doctors' letters backing up my allergic reactions. I have ended up in the hospital emergency rooms due to being severely poisoned. So has Star, my cat of many years, had to have treatment at the vet. clinic.

Toxic mold is another thing which slaps me in the face as soon as I enter a contaminated area. I was the first to detect it in the Tennessee Theatre before it was renovated, and at Oak Ridge High School auditorium. Both have gone through intensive mold-removing process. You'll be glad to know that foam insulation in attics is now dry enough to make it safe for the installer and inhabitantsof the house. This used to be a major health scare, and I was concerned when John L. did his own insulation this year. I was shocked to know he stayed home long enough for repair work in a stone house, notoriously damp with killer wet basements, hard on books.

To kill germs in polluted rivers which supply our water, the utility companies expose us to dangerous chemicals which kill germs. But, if you consume this "treated" water, it can harm your bodies on the inside. Even
cooking or boiling does not extract the danger from too many chemicals. My biggest challenge right now is toting "spring water" from the stores to my new abode for coffee, cooking, drinking, etc. Even the instructions which came with my new coffeemaker demanded bottled water to be used in the appliance.

When I moved, I left the cleaning to people who get paid to use toxic chemicals. I gave up my deposit as I had purposely been poisoned enough by the management. Cleaning products is a large hidded risk and should never be combined; they are strong enough alone to kill an ox.Rug cleaners and dry-cleaning products cause cancer in mice. They kept Star sick, so now they have my money to replace the carpet. Lead in paint is fatal to infants and can cause birth defects in newborns.

Asbestos is a killer! One of our major business on Gay Street is so full of this toxin, the developer leaves it setting empty. I've tried to interest the mayor into letting us use it as a bus center to get in out of the elements. It's not like we'd be living there. There is some kind of work taking place outside that building now that the Mayor has admitted he was wrong in selecting the bus site on property owned by someone who wants to keep it intact.I stayed sick for months and developed stomach ulcers when I tried to eat the Meals on Wheels because of the food additives which made the oft inedible and stinky. The meals contain preservatives as they are processed in advance and stored. By the time they reach their destination, the bread in mine even was moldy, Several years ago, my residence was a cold, cinder-block "house" under a huge electric transforer (we have those in abundance in the Tennessee Valley as TVA is based here). I was dying, I thought, and six months in a small rural town brought me back to life and ready to take on the big hometown again.Any question about poisons from chloroform, arsenic, the silent killer (radon and natural gas), environmental (real or overblown) and household items are explained in this useful reference book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Talks about things not talked about in other books
I read the book a few years ago and one of the things that amazed me was the tendancy for people to develop allergies w/o a family history of it.For example:

High Fructose Corn syrup is a derivative of corn.... used to sweeten reconstituted fruit which thru manufacturing processes lost it's sweetness. Many people develop an allergy to corn because upon consumption releases endorphines and causes emotional feelings that need to be constantly fed... in other words an addiction, hence the obesity factor.

Person eats food w/ corn syrup. Person experiences a high associated w/ endorphines. Person comes down off high and experiences anxiety. Person, ON A SUBLIMINAL BASIS, continues to consume food w/ corn syrup thus the obesity factor and thus the impossibility for many to lose weight.

There are also examples of people who are alcoholic because of the same reason.Incredible.
It's in there w/ complete studies. Doctors don't acknowledge it because they make too much money on treatments of overweightpeople and so does the pill industry. It's there just read it.

Don't believe me? Read this book.

2-0 out of 5 stars Promises Much But Delivers Little
This book attempts to be thoroughly comprehensive but ultimately fails because often some vital information is missing.I believe that health books which really empower are ones which give real, useable answers, not vague outlines. For instance, Mr Null does not tell me where to get the vital allergy tests done, what they cost, what they involve or which laboratorys/methods he recommends. He refers to these tests numerous times as providing part of the answer, but I am left feeling that I have a vague idea of the problem, but a wholly inadequate idea of the solution.Mr Null is NOT an allergy expert and it shows. The book is not completely useless, but my advice is to look elsewhere for help. ...
